Diner Reviews
  • "Four of us had different breakfasts & all were very good; mine was one of my favorites, chicken fried steak with cream gravy. This was one of the best I've had with a delicious crispy crust and excellent gravy. Good sized portions, friendly & courteous staff and reasonably priced for the quality and quantity of food. We'll be back for dinner soon."

  • "Thanks for a lovely meal and fine service. The food was inventive and delicious. We tried the bone marrow and found it truly interesting and delightful. I had the halibut in coconut sauce--the fish was cooked to perfection and the sauce was very subtle and really complimented the fish. My partner had the pork chop and found it quite wonderful. We had to skip dessert, but will definitely save room for it next time. Great place; thanks again."

  • "I feel like The Lilac is a little hidden treasure in downtown Billings. great rotating menu and the food was delicious. It did get a little noisy and hard to hear but that would be my only recommendation. It wa fun to meet the owner although i am not sure if he would have come ober if we werent sitting mext to a news announcer. Definitely a place i will go again!!!"

  • "Chef Jeremy continually amazes us with new dishes that you wouldn't think of, but taste amazing! Gluten friendly, fresh ingredients, great wines, friendly staff, and of course the wonderful food keep us coming back weekly for dinner and/or Sunday brunch! It's great to have a private restaurant you'd find in Portland or Seattle here in downtown Billings!"

  • "Dined here prior to an event at Alberta Bair. Our group of four all tried something different and everyone was happy with their choices. (Sea Bass, & Braised Rib wtih Gnochi were teriific!) Also, the appetizers and desserts were fresh and all made on site. (Dessert right out of the oven) Service was prompt and friendly. Will definitiely return."

  • "Seriously great little place with amazing food, very chic ambiance, and amazing service by everyone you come in contact with. I've been in the hospitality/F&B industry for 15 years and this tiny downtown gem nailed it."

  • "We brought out of town family here and we were NOT disappointed! They loved it!"

  • "My daughter and I dined at Lilac because we were in Billings overnight and wanted to have a special dinner. We both loved the ambiance of Lilac, my daughter stating that it was a "hipster" place. Our table was waiting for us when we arrived, we were seated immediately and the service was fast and friendly. We each ordered a small plate, i.e. an appetizer, she order the smoked trout salad and I, the sweet potato dumplings which came to us quickly and was delicious. For dinner we ordered the Hanger Steak and the Duck Confit Ravioli which were served in small portions but cooked perfectly. For dessert we shared the toffee pudding which which was amazing! My only complaint is everything was far too expensive for what we received."

  • "Lilac is a local foods creative cuisine restaurant in downtown Billings, MT. Happily in this case, locally doesn't mean just beef. The diverse menu is replete with a wide variety of small plates and entrees that will satisfy the discerning diner. The extensive wine list includes a few by the glass wines. Desserts are a bit pricey and modestly sized, while the small plates are modestly priced but big enough to share."

  • "We had another great brunch. Best mimosas in town! Huevos rancheros were great. Eggs cooked perfectly. Husband had the fabulous Dailey's bacon again."

  • "The restaurant is in the historic area of town and that added to the nice atmosphere. The menu had a wide variety of items and the food was excellent. The portion sizes were reasonable, but if you are expecting large portions, you may be a bit disappointed. I only felt a twinge of disappointment when my meal was gone because the food was that good! Can't wait to eat there again."

  • "My husband and I had a nice experience at Lilac. Our server was great, my husband dropped his knife on the floor and she came by with a new one before we could even ask for one! She was also very personable, my husband and I both asked her opinions on certain food options and she was honest and helpful. I agree that there is probably not a bad dish on the menu! When we go back I will include appetizers, this is not one of those restuarants were the main courses are large and come with large side dishes."

  • "We had a group of 10 which I wasn't sure they would be able to accommodate but they did. In fact, I had to change the reservation and the person on the phone was very helpful and friendly. The food was very good. They have a good variety of food items including some that you don't always see in Billings. I would definitely recommend the sticky toffee pudding. Awesome!"

  • "Our second time at Lilac and both were excellent. Great flavors, healthy dishes, good beer. What more could you ask?"

  • "I have eaten at Lilac three times now. Once at the spur of the moment for dinner. My friend and I were able to find seats available at the bar and I had the most scrumptious salmon I have ever tasted. The second time was a birthday dinner and both meals were exquisite. When I declined the birthday dessert they offered they brought us two glasses of champagne instead. I didn't think I liked champagne, but I loved what they served us and regret that I didn't ask what it was. The third time I ate there was for Sunday brunch. I ordered the Croque Madame and it too was delicious. When I eat out, I like to order food that I would not typically make at home and Lilac definitely fits that bill. Always different, delicious and deserving."

  • "We dined at Lilac for Valentine's day. Jeremy had two menus, the regular (if you can call it that since it changes regularly!) and the Prix Fixe menu. We opted for what Jeremy's ideas for a special menu. The flavors were complex and wonderful. We went with an empty stomach and and open mind and we were not disappointed! A three course meal with a lemon intermezzo was reasonably priced. The hub's brined, grilled veal chop was one of the most amazing things I have ever tasted. So much flavor. Kudos to Jeremy and the entire crew for thrilling us yet one more time!!!"

  • "The food was delightful - we had the price fixe Valentine's menu and it delivered with aces... the greens were super fresh and tasty, the steak done perfectly with a nice balance of vin rouge and salsify - a charming root vegetable that I want more of... think of the best baby carrot you ever ate then pan roast.. yum. The service was excellent - the help pairing a nice organic Cab was a great fit and the level of attention just right - always there when you needed - and then there was the home made lemon sorbet intermissio... we could have had a bunch more of that - the portion was correct - it was just soo good... crisp, refreshing... a perfect set up for the wonderful creative dessert... can't wait to return."

  • "Some of the best food I've had in recent memory! The atmosphere was phenomenal, and the service was impeccable (not obtrusive, pushy, or bothersome at all.... and very helpful, energetic, and personable)! Exciting and fresh menu! Recommend to anyone who has high expectations and lofty tastes!"

  • "My wife and I had dinner before going to a show. We were seated quickly and had our drink orders taken right after we sat down. They provide a little bread while you are looking over the menu. I ordered the ribs and my wife had the snapper. Both dishes were excellent. The server did well, with a couple of others stopping by the table to check on us. We were early, but by the time we left, a good crowd had arrived, but it wasn't too noisy and we were able to visit. We finished off our meal with a yummy desert. We will be back."

  • "There are a very few restaurants in SW Montana that have really great food for mildly adventurous eaters, Lilac is certainly one. There were choices for more adventurous eaters, but for those of us who just want really good food that is different from everywhere else, this is the place. Wait staff was attentive, knew the menu and wine list well, were able to make great suggestions without hovering. We had a great time and will be going back. The menu changes every two weeks depending on what is available, so it is very doubtful that we will get bored. I highly recommend Lilac, our new favorite restaurant ."

  • "We tried Lilac tonight and had a wonderful meal! The menu and food feel like the chef has chosen his favorite comfort foods and thrown them into a big pot. The meals are diverse and somewhat unexpected. Rabbit or lamb as an appitizer, possibly french fries? Steak, pasta, sole or a bacon cheeseburger as an entree? And lots of surprises--like the bacon cheeseburger has NO bacon, but rather bacon JELLY. Another positive--very few restaurants have a dessert as special as the food. This one does. Chocolate mouse, peanut ice cream and a coconut macroon on one plate! So--one appetizer, two entrees, one bottle of wine and a shared dessert=$69! Great deal!"

  • "Lilac's locally sourced menu is innovative and carefully presented. Though not large; in combination with specials, it offers enough interesting options to make the final choice challenging. The Roasted Cauliflower starter has an unexpected combination of zesty flavors. The Braised Short Rib with gnocchi & caramelized onion is wonderfully intense and melt-in-the-mouth tender. The vegetarian goat cheese Pirogui with fig, greens and curried potato broth is flavorful and substantial. The wine menu is carefully selected with an excellent range of price points and wine styles from Spain, Italy, Germany, France, Australia, California. None of the "standard" filler wines here. Deserts are fantastic, decadent….definately save room!"

  • "Lilac is innovative. The focus is on delivering great good with excellent service. Menu changes monthly (brunch menu offered only on Sundays differs from dinner menu). Menu is a la carte. Wine list is good. we love Lilac and do not hesitate to recommend it. It is not cheap but you get very good value. Check their specials for the day."
