Diner Reviews
  • "We thought everything was very good. Pleasantly surprised. Sat outside on a Sunday night so it was very quiet and relaxing. Inside was kinda empty but nice decor. Waiter was attentive but not overbearing. Food came out very quickly."

  • "Food was great. Better than lower Manhattan restaurants. Service is excellent. Will recommend."

  • "The food is salty, and whatever you have salt dominates. The shrimp were frozen and thawed and tasted old. The waiter did not know the wines, but he did call the manager who was very helpful. One person ordered trout but got the salmon. Apart from that, ambience is fine, people are friendly and decor is nice."

  • "Have been going for many years. The quality of the food has slipped. Also $11 for a draft beer? Many other places in JC that will take it's place on our list."

  • "Great food. Service was fine but they didn't know the menu very well. Also they were out of burgers, which is supposed to be one of their signature meals. But overall solid and I'd 100% go back."

  • "On July 3rd....Tattoo Bartender was unattentive and unsocial and did not ask me for a refill once for the hour I was sitting there, also took a very long time to take my order after I asked for an appy since my guest was running late. Once seated our waiter took forever to take our drink and lunch orders."

  • "My favorite spot in Paulus Hook section of Jersey City. Always a friendly place with consistently delicious fare."

  • "Great location and exceptional attention paid in the service. However, the food quality does not match the rest. Had Lobster Bucatini but lobster was sunk in a sauce that was not cooked (showing very little knowledge on how to make a basic Italian sauce). Trout was cooked well but the corn chowder below came with mussles that were not properly cleaned (can still taste the sand now). Desserts were fine, the creme brulee trio was satisfying even if nothing special. Definitely not worth the price."

  • "The Light Horse had been my #1 choice in Paulus Hook but has slipped significantly over the last few visits. The food and menu choices are no longer fantastic merely very good. The latest trip on a Friday night was disappointing due to infrequent attention from our server (about every 15 minutes) and incredibly slow kitchen ( nearly 1 hour for meals to appear). The interior tables were not full, but the outdoor tables seem to have proliferated from previous years so I wonder if they have insufficient staff to serve the tables and prepare the food. When I complained to the server I got a smart assed response ( she thought she was being a comedian) and then said "trouble in the kitchen"."

  • "This place was perfect for a Father's Day brunch. The staff was friendly and accommodating, the food was great, and the ambience was very open and airy."

  • "Service was impeccable as always. Had the Prime Ribeye from the regular menu. My dining companion had the 28 Day Aged Prime Rib and the taste difference was incredible. Cocktails and wine were great. Tried the Coconut Cake wrapped in chocolate with a scoop of blood orange gelato and was amazed. Fantastic experience from start to finish."

  • "Loved our experience here...skirt steak, beet salad, rib eye steak, French Onion...fantastic and nicely prepared. Service with Alexadra was the very best-can't say enough about her skill and professionism."

  • "We came on a really stormy night and the place was still packed, which shows how good it is. We tried the new rare tuna app, which was fresh and light. The duck was a huge portion, and absolutely delicious! We also had the app special that night which was a flatbread with house made hummus, grapes, and smoked mozzarella, which we loved. My friend couldn't stop drooling over her filet special with lentils and yoghurt. Drinks were well made as usual and the server was kind and attentive. It is hard to find fault with this place. I definitely recommend it!"

  • "Food was amazing, everything we tried was good. The baked meatloaf is an absolute hit. Extensive bar menu. Highly recommend it."

  • "Light Horse Tavern offered a good logistical solution to our group's recent dinner plans: we were convening in Jersey City from different directions, and the restaurant was an easy walk from Exchange Place and seemed to have a diverse and interesting menu. But the restaurant went beyond expectations, from the staff's friendly, no-worries demeanor when we called to tell them we were delayed by bad-weather traffic to the freshly conceived yet accessible and familiar menu offerings to the charming and unpretentious historic atmosphere. It was hard to choose from many appealing options; our selections included comfort-food meatloaf and ocean trout, both excellent and very satisfying; our whole group was pleased. Desserts were worth the splurge!"

  • "The Light Horse Tavern is one of my favorite restaurants. I come whenever I can and have recommended it several times. It is a beautiful restaurant in a beautiful neighborhood. Food is great, and the service is efficient and friendly. I always look forward to coming. "

  • "Been living in the area for a decade. When a lot of places come and go Lighthorse only gets better. Will always recommend it first on my list of local restaurants."

  • "Made reservation for 2 a week in advance, and arrived on time. Hostess showed us to our table. Then for 20 minutes nothing happened. Flagged down a bus boy and asked him to find a waiter or waitress. Waitress showed up 5 minutes later and apologized, she was not aware we were seated. Took our orders. She came back 10 minutes later and said she was off for the rest of the night and said another waiter , Nick, would handle the rest of our meal. Nick provided very attentive professional service for the rest of the meal. Food was good, beer, wine and spirit list extensive. The back of the house seems to be doing it job, the front of the house was flailing around."

  • "We always enjoy our meals here. This time we decided to try the Saturday brunch. The level of service has improved to outstanding. The meals are always good. Bloody Mary was really spicy! The Lobster BLT especially delicious. BBQ beef a little too sweet for my taste. The oysters and salad were a great way to start the meal."

  • "We sad down next to the piano, the gentleman( I believe he was the owner) and hostess greeted us warmly with sincerity, service was smooth, food wonderful unfortunately they did not have the pork shoulder I requested but gave the option of the wellington which was more money but worth it.the two member combo stated up and began the most wonderful classic jazz arrangements, had to head back to Maryland but could have stayed forever on this warm evening at the light horse tavern."

  • "We were seated outside, on a gorgeous spring day. The service was quick and friendly, and the food was incredible. I had the bourbon vanilla french toast, and it was heavenly. My partner, who is allergic to dairy ordered the huevos rancheros, which normally comes with cheese and sour cream. The server happily accommodated his dietary restrictions, and the perfectly-cooked eggs more than made up for the reduction in ingredients."

  • "that is what I would say! I must have been 20 times to that joint. Always reliable; food is good, service is ok, restaurant & bar are beautiful, not too pricey. Definitely a winner. my favorites are the raw bar, the octopus salad, the jalapeno polenta, the kale salad among others, not to forget an exceptional lamb stew on sunday brunch menu. warmly recommended"

  • "A friend and resident of Jersey City recommended this restaurant to me while I was in town, and it did not disappoint. The staff was friendly and the restaurant has a bar scene atmosphere and also fine dining feel in the back room. We had lobster, calamari, a spaghetti/scallop dish and fish and chips, which were all fresh tasting and light. Homemade tartar sauce and seasoned salt at the table were a nice touch and delicious. Looking forward to visiting again next time I'm in town."

  • "I have worked in Jersey City on and off since 1998. The redevelopment has been amazing bringing lots of restaurants to the area. I visited the Light Horse Friday after being away for 2 years. Met an old friend for lunch and I was greeted by the staff and management as if I was a long lost family member. The food was delicious as always and the service was top notch. I am never disappointed at the Light Horse. I just wish there was a place like it in Edgewater where I live! Consider opening one in Edgewater we need it!!! The Light Horse is still the best in JC"

  • "This is an excellently managed tavern with a wide selection of dishes and daily specials. A close friend and I make it our "luncheon place" everytime I am in Jersey City and always enjoy spending a long leisurely meal there. For my pal, meeting me there requires a lwalk from her apartment, but I must travel from Philadelphia. Believe me, it is worth the trouble. There is one sour note to report from our most recent visit. The service, which is normally superb, was no where near the standard we have enjoyed in the past. Having said that, I am confident we will return to the Light Horse in the near future."

  • "Birthday brunch at my favorite place in Jersey City was terrific, as usual!!! Other groups included new parents with very well behaved babies, and other groups and couples of all ages. Day or night, LHT is always a great stop. Some say it's pricey, but I am a "you get what you pay for" person, and LHT never disappoints."

  • "The Light Horse Tavern had come highly recommended, so we were looking forward to a great time. We arrived 15 minutes earlier than our booking, but were promptly shown to a table (we were prepared to sit at the bar if it were an issue). The food throughout was fine - well cooked, good portion sizes, tasty - but nothing out of this world. The prices were reasonable. The service was also just fine - polite, courteous, but no warmth or energy or passion."

  • "All food we ordered were good except the prime steak was bad. I was socked the steak had no taste, hard to chew. This was my first bad experience from Light Horse Tavern. Once I told our waitress, we didn't get charge the BAD steak."

  • "We went here to celebrate my husbands graduation and I was very pleased although I thought it was odd they were out of two brunch items (french toast and the biscuits) on a Sunday. Other than that, the noise level was great for bringing a toddler along and the food was fantastic all around! We are already making plans to go back!"

  • "Very happy we chose Light Horse Tavern. The menu offered a wonderful variety of selections without being overwhelming. Everyone was thrilled with the dishes they selected, drinks were delicious and reasonable. Our server was top-notch. Will definitely return, and I have already recommended this restaurant to friends."

  • "Took my best friend here while she was visiting me and my husband. We couldn't resist trying the broccoli gruyere soup to share and it didn't disappoint us! Most of us got either the french toast or huevos rancheros - both of which I've had before and would highly recommend. The french toast is always soooo good! The huevos rancheros could use some more spice and salsa, but it definitely hit the spot."

  • "After reading reviews on various websites, I regrettably chose Light Horse as they place to meet a friend from Germany for brunch. Food was terrible. Eggs Benedict served stone cold, and when we called a waiter over to tell him, he grabbed a manager who had an almost hostile and demeaning tone when stating that we ordered Salmon Eggs Benedict and it can't be served hot. Really? Stone cold eggs and cold hollandaise would cook the salmon??? Beyond ridiculous. We always had to flag down someone despite being seated next to wait station. No one ever just filled coffee, replaced the empty creamer, or asked if we wanted another bloody. They would just dump the plates and never check in. Avoid this place as I shall."
