A word from Libertine
Traditional butcher cuts of meat dominate the food offerings at James Beard winner Tim McKee’s casual, accessibly priced neighborhood bar and restaurant. Master drinkmaker Johnny Michaels’ collection of cocktails, spirits and beers complements McKee’s à la carte, shareable dishes, creating an environment that’s equal parts restaurant, bar, lounge and neighborhood hangout.Continued
Diner Reviews
  • "We went on a Tuesday night. There was a pretty good crowd but service was punctual. Waiter was a little on the too talkative side and bussers were constantly trying to clear our plates before we were done eating. Those were the only negatives of the experience. Food was very good. Ambience had a cool vibe inside (we didn't make it to the roof top). Much better than the old cafeteria. Great inexpensive creative cocktail list. Desserts were amazing!"

  • "Slightly limited menu on patio but understandable given it recently opened. Great patio for sure though and great drinks too. I didn't love the way things came out as they were ready. Eating a steak all alone while everyone else stared at their drinks isn't my favorite way to enjoy dinner. Interesting menu though. Burgers were decadent. The caramelized cauliflower was amazing. As were the fried artichokes with curry dipping sauce. Also tried the Avocado dish which had a surprising amount of crab on it. That said, it was a smaller dish. The steak tartare wasn't my favorite - had kind of a sushi/japanese spin to it. I appreciate that they were trying something new though. But I don't like my raw steak to remind me of raw fish."

  • "Came here on our anniversary and had an excellent time! Food was great(especially liked the short ribs!). We loved sitting next to the open window and our server was very attentive and friendly! I highly recommend this place!"

  • "This restaurant is a must try! We had the jalapeno buttermilk fried chicken with a honey chipotle glaze, baby potatoes with creme fraiche and chives, and kale with manchego creme. The foods are designed to share. Best kale I have ever had. Our dinner selection sang a beautiful love song to my southern food roots and my new and I ever increasing foodie side. Impeccable service even on a busy Saturday night. Cocktail list is yummy. You have to try the yo la tengo margarita! Actual spice in MN, which in my experience since I've lived here is a rarity. Starts off a little sweet and a litle kick at the end from the habanero. I will without a doubt return. Waiting in anticipation for when the restaurant opens for brunch. It's coming soon!"

  • "We had really high expectations of the new Tim McKee joint. Seeing "head-on" shrimp and bone marrow on menu in Minneapolis is kind of rare - unfortunately, in our experience, it was a novelty rather than an amazing food experience."

  • "Service was prompt, food was delicious. All entrees were very well priced and delicious. Great change from typical steakhouse fare."

  • "We enjoyed an early dinner at Libertine. Not very crowded at 5:30 in a Friday evening, so the noise level wasn't bad. The food was very good -- especially the Korean-style spare ribs. One order of our was delayed, but that's probably due to the new kitchen still finding its pace. Wait service was excellent. This place might be trying a little to hard to be chic, but we'd go back."

  • "Start off with food: excellently prepared. Not your normal cuts of meat, but the entrées were home runs. Cooked to perfection and delicious. Again, not typical cuts, but very flavorful. Appetizers we're great too. Loved the tartare- chunks of meat vs diced and carried a lot of flavor. Smoked salmon is smoked salmon, but the flavors worked well on the plate. Bone marrow - yes, you may take a shot from it, but the narrow was succulent. And lastly, drinks were reasonably priced and good. Nothing over the top, but nothing I wanted to send back. Service was amazing. Had an awesome server who knew it all, and if he didn't, he asked and got right back to us. We'll done, libertine."

  • "So the food here was WONDERFUL however I don't think I will go back because of the concept of bringing it out at it is ready. Four of us went for dinner and ordered 4 entrees and 4 sides. Three of our entrees and two sides came out and then it was almost 20 minutes before the final entree and sides came out. Eating for me is an intimate, community event so having our final guest basically eat alone did not work."

  • "The four people in our party sampled many food items and drinks. All were very good. The portions tend to be a bit small. We had one starter 3 sides and four meat selections, plus two deserts. Prices are a bit high, but overall we enjoyed the experience."

  • "A promising place, needs some fine tuning. Loved the avocado, crab salad, tomato appetizer and tuna tacos. Be sure to wear sunscreen since umbrellas don't tilt and make early evening dining a bit warm and blinding. Service was good and friendly"

  • "Since this place has only been open a week, I didn't have high expectations. There were some odd service issues, such as our waitress not knowing how to open a wine bottle. The other issue: the restaurant's "policy" according to our waitress of brining food to the table as it is ready. This is not a problem if you order small plates or are sharing everything. If you want to eat a traditional entree and sides, this means you may receive the amazing kale with manchego first...and your steak ten minutes later. And your companion may not have his/her entree when you get yours. Our server said she could time our food together, and it worked fine. Loved the charcuterie plate, burger, poke tacos."

  • "Enjoyed some cocktails from the drink list. Our first round of drinks and the baked Alaska were the highlight of the meal. The second round of cocktails were not as good as the first. Food was good, didn't knock it out of the park though. Kinda bummed on the ham steak, I guess I expected more, especially for the price."

  • "I dined here a few days after opening and was so impressed I came back the very next day. This has easily become my favorite place to bring friends, a huge selection of virgin cocktails, as well as yummy cocktails, a ton of vegetarian items, and lots of meat eater choices too. They are sure to have something for everyone. Bonus, several tall boy beers for just $3 up on the rooftop!"

  • "I just ate appetizers so I might be inclined to try again and have some dinner. Portions seemed fairly small for the cost. Some different things on the menu. The music was a bit louder than I like for a restaurant."

  • "-The drink menu is very creative and prices are reasonable. -The meat mains were o.k. - but didn't wow. -The noise level is through the roof! -Shares come in threes - hard to split with four people. -The delivery of food is extremely cumbersome. Our food was delivered like this: one main, several mins later one salad. 5 mins later, a main. 3-4 mins later a main. Then another salad. Then the last main. The total service time 20 mins. The excuse for this is that they want to serve food when its ready and not have it sitting under a heat lamp. I can agree. However, I don't want to be eating while others wait. One way or the other the food isn't being consumed when its fresh and hot. It feels like a very mismanaged kitchen."

  • "Lovely cocktails and interesting creative dishes. The beet salad and onglet beef were absolutely delicious. Our server was good, but the hostesses seemed a little new to the game."

  • "Great opportunity to try different cuts of meat. The "bacon chop" was excellent! Service was good. Definitiely will go back to try different things. Only objection - it was a perfect night weather wise but they do not serve food upstairs outside. However, the staff was helpful and suggested we have drinks upstairs and they would hold the table downstairs when we were ready to eat."

  • "Everything... absolutely everything was spot on here. From the brilliant drink menu, to the fantastic Fish Tacos, Korean BBQ Ribs, Tofu, and Bacon Chop. Brilliant food served in a vibrant atmosphere. Also, the service is exceptionally friendly and helpful w/ the menu. HIGHLY recommended!"

  • "Tried out this restaurant on day 2 after it's opening. Great experience and delicious food! Most of the menu is gluten-free and the server was very knowledgable about GF options and the different selections of meats. Also - lots of fun, quirky drink options. Fun for date nights or groups with lots of options to share. I will definitely be going back soon!"

  • "Feather Steak, Bacon Chop, some oysters and a couple Steve McQueen cocktails equals one heck of a first visit to this place! Definitely plan to go back and try more on the menu, cudeos to the chef"

  • "The servers are rude... so is the food. I was excited about the menu when it opened, but after going a few times I realized they over-promised and under-delivered."

  • "Good menu -- lots to choose from and food has been consistently very good, whether visiting for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Not romantic or food fit for foodies, but kid friendly and the food will not disappoint."

  • "2 out of the 4 people enjoyed their food. Server was good. Overall I think the owners took the cafeteria concept a little too far and some of the food reminded me of my grade school lunch food!!"
