Diner Reviews
  • "Been here 4 times in past 2 years and food was always incredible. Has "open kitchen" concept. I would leave there smelling heavily of all foods. This time we sat on patio. Food was good - had: poblano, flautas, camarones. My friend and I agreed the shrimp had too much of a fishy taste other foods were delicious as usual. Service was so-so. My Open Table reservation request listed patio dining but the host seemed unaware. Had to ask for it after being led to indoor table. Was told there was patio dining but it was "tight" (was he concerned my pregnant self couldn't fit at the table?). Patio table was fine. Bus boy was not on top of things. Had to ask for flatware and linen napkins. Never got clean plates between dishes like past."

  • "Four of us went to brunch at Libertad. it was not busy. We ordered the eggs benedict, the omelette and a pork scramble. The pork scramble was the only dish that was half way okay. Have you ever heard of an omelette with peas? this dish was like eating a pea pie, disgusting. There were other vegetables in this rubbery concoction but there were so many peas that the other flavors were lost. There was no salt and pepper, hot sauce, not enough set ups on our table, (I had to get up and ask for all 3) and to make matters worse, a two top came in 20 minutes after we were seated, and they were served 10 minutes before we were. the music was too loud, even for the 24 year old who was dining with us. Worst brunch EVER."

  • "Our party of four had an incredible dinner on the lovely patio. Food and service were outstanding. The Asian Pear Salad was generous in portion and the candied pecans in the salad were a nice crunchy, sweet contrast. The stuffed poblano pepper with goat cheese was lightly fried and the pepper had just the right amount of heat. Our party also enjoyed the hummus (unique presentation), flautas, skirt steak, duck (literally falls off the bone) and crab cake. We each ordered a first and second course and it was more than enough food. This was our second visit to Libertad and we will keep it on our list for great dining experiences."

  • "Finally! A great restaurant in the neighborhood that would be worthy in any of the trendy areas in Chicago. The dishes are designed to share, so three or four for a couple is perfect. The menu changes regularly. The flavors are central/south American but very much the chef's creative inspiration. We had the poblano pepper ♡ a pear arugula salad ♡ polpo (octopus) ♡ Camarones (shrimp) ♡! I admit they had us hooked with the amuse bouche --a warm little cup of beet and serano pepper soup...yum! Service was attentive and very pleasant. Prices are reasonable for the quality ~ 14-18$ for more complex entrees. We are going back!"

  • "I went for dinner with a friend on a Thursday evening in July. We sat outside in the charming patio behind the building. We ordered and shared four items: the avocado and watercress salad, the tempura poblano, the skirt steak and the chicken flautas. Everything was equally delicious. I can't wait to go back!"

  • "I felt somewhat crowded in because our table was so close to the next diner. Hard to ignore the conversation. Otherwise the food was excellent. Good place for trying new dishes. Liked the in between servings. Not large, not small."

  • "My wife and I sat on the patio. We ordered a series of small plates from the vegetable, fish and meat selections. All were excellent! Followed this up with a couple desserts. Recommend Libertad wholeheartedly!"

  • "Me and my friends go crazy for Libertad. Their menu is delicious and sophisticated. The flavors are out of this world. Very clean and tight-nit place. Perfect for a small group of friends or a one on one. Hugo is the best server. I. Love. Libertad."

  • "The food was delicious and beautufully presented. Our server Gabriel was very attentive and helpful. Our party of 4 ordered 6 plates. I would have liked to see the fish (camarones) and meat (asada) portions a little larger so that we each got a little more to eat as we split each dish 4 ways. Yes, we could have ordered more, but it is a bit expensive. We also ordered 2 desserts, one of which we were not charged for as it was my birthday. All in all. A very nice experience."

  • "Delicious food. Loved the asada and octopus. The hummus appetizer was tasty and the pear salad was perfect to share. Our waiter was not very pleasant and a bit lazy. We ordered a bottle of wine and he poured our first glass but never returned to pour another. We filled our own throughout the evening. We were there a month ago and had a wonderful waiter full of enthusiasm and energy. This time it was the opposite. Waiter seemed bored and no energy. Food was just as good but the overall experience was less fun because of the service."

  • "My husband and I went here before the Billy Joel concert and loved the food and the service. The Tuna we ordered was cooked perfectly, and the sides that it came with were fantastic. I wanted to lick the plate it was so good."

  • "the food was fantastic. we had a group of 5 and tried most of the dishes. they all looked good and tasted great. there are a lot of drinks, beer and wines to choose from. Nora our server was wonderful. Arturo makes a mean drink."

  • "The food as always was delicious. The only drawback is the noise level . The tables are practically on top of each other. As I mentioned, the food is beautifully presented and very tasty…The bill tends to be pricey."

  • "We were staying near the o'hare airport for business and did not want a steakhouse or to to drive into the city for dinner after a long international flight. Reading the reviews we settled on Libertad. The menu is small 15 dishes (5 each of veggies, fish, and meat) but everything we had was absolutely delicious and well conceived. The flavors and spices of the stuffed tempura poblano pepper, pork belly and duck were all wonderful. The only down side was the noise it was difficult to hear keeping voices at a normal level. Good beer and cocktail selection as well."

  • "I've driven down Lincoln a hundred times and never noticed this place. Saw the rave reviews on Check Please! and decided we had to go. The menu is short but interesting; divided into vegetarian, fish and meat. About a dozen entrees and a few deserts. Nice specialty cocktails (also about a dozen), some nice craft beers and also about a dozen wine selections. The servers recommend sharing (tapas style), but I wouldn't consider this to be a typical tapas restaurant. It was described as Latin fusion on Check Please! and that is appropriate. Four of us shared seven entrees. Everything was delicious, well prepared and nicely presented. Highly recommend!"

  • "5 baby boomer girls out to celebrate 2 birthdays! Loved the patio seating! Great food, great service, great neighborhood treasure...can get pricey if you order too many of those amazing drinks...but well worth it! Seasonal menu, but some menu items remain constant. Our menu favorites...the Poblano Appetizer and the Sea Bass!! They were amazing! Only criticism...they were out of one of the desserts we wanted, however the 2 we had - chocolate fudge cake w ice cream and crime brûlée, we're delicious! And, they comped dessert because of our birthday celebrations! It was a beautiful night and we enjoyed their lovely, but small patio without ever feeling rushed!"

  • "Food, cocktails, ambiance and service all terrific. It's pricey but worth it. We started with the pear salad then camarones with purple cauliflower, fennel and pumpkin seeds and the scallops on a bed of black rice with string beans. Presentation is beautiful and everything was delicious. Also ordered the carmelized banana with banana creme brulee. Good but probably not my favorite. Also had the chocolate lava cake (comped) for my friend's birthday. Lovely evening. Would love to try the patio some time but Saturday was very windy and heavy storms coming our way. Looking forward to the next visit. Unless your kid is a very adventuresome eater -- this is not a place you should bring children. Mature food and atmosphere."

  • "I've never had a bad meal at Libertad. Recently visited with a friend - we shared 2 salads (1 with watercress, 1 with pear), the asada steak and the crab cake - all excellent. Service was very good as always. The ambience was fine but I deducted a star because when we arrived (early in the evening), the restaurant was mostly empty, yet we were seated at a table for two only inches from other diners, even though there was free space elsewhere. By the time we left, the space had filled up, but it would have been nice to have a little elbow room. Guess next time we'll bring a 3rd person so we aren't wedged into the 2-tops along the wall."

  • "Been here for brunch many times. Finally had the opportunity to do dinner -- glad I did! Food was inventive and tasty. Had a wonderful watercress salad with perfectly ripe avocado, croutons and radishes. Simple but a perfect starter. The calabaza plate was baked acorn squash with a wild mushroom risotto dressed with truffle oil. I ate it skin and all. So good I wanted to lick the plate. Flavors were perfectly balanced. Husband had roasted chicken breast and the skirt steak with chimichurri sauce and matchstick fries. He thoroughly enjoyed both! Desserts looked scrumptious but we were full -- next time! Only disconnect for me was the 80s soundtrack music but with food so good -- who cares? I lived through the 80s, I can do again."

  • "What great food. Our party of 4 had the Poblano, sea bass, steak, lamb chops and a couple of other sides. All were incredibly flavorful. The room is on the noisy side so it was difficult to hear the waitress. Service was efficient though not overly warm. Like I said it was hard to hear the wait staff. Had to go on Open Table for a reservation more than 3 weeks in advance to get a 7:30 Saturday night reservation. I will definitely go back."

  • "I originally attended this restaurant as a late night desert and drink respite. The management was friendly The food was good This time, I was introducing out-of-town guests. We booked our reservation We were called and reminded that somebody must be they are exactly at the reservation time. The rest of the party arrived within 30 minutes We began ordering food immediately The owner's representative approached us with the following statement. We must be off of the table by 7:30 PM. They are quite busy and the reservation is expected to be gone within 2 hours They could not have us occupy their space for more than that time. We concluded the meal at another location I will let the readers decide how they would manage the situation"

  • "This was our second experience here. The first time was outstanding but this time was just very good. The food presentation is beautiful and service great. We had a few issues with some of the dishes we ordered. The glaze on the shrimp was outstanding, but the shrimp were overcooked and the glaze didn't spread to the veggies underneath since it was basically seared onto the shrimps' head. This was our error in ordering. The hummus and lomo are both very good but the lomo has a bean puree too which after hummus was a lot of bean puree. The avocado salad and roja margarita were excellent. I'm sure we will return but we may stick with what we loved the first time, the steak with chimichurri sauce, and the chicken flautas."

  • "Food was very tasty and well-prepared, but due to small portions, was not fully satisfying. The simple addition of an inexpensive side (rice, potato, vegetable, etc.) would result in a better overall experience. The hummus had a very interesting smoked flavor that was unique to the dish and delicious. The poblano tasted very freshly prepared. The fish was delicious, but a tiny portion. The restaurant is very convenient to attending events at the Skokie Theatre."

  • "Our evening at Libertad was most enjoyable. The waitress realized it was our first time there and did a great job of recommending the number of dishes as well as which ones she thought we'd like. The first dish was a soup served in a cappuccino style cup. It was outstanding and had a spicy flavor. The hummus was exceptional though there was only 1 large pita for dipping and our group really enjoyed the carne asada. We asked about the chicken mole and were disappointed that it was not on the menu. We also enjoyed the scallops and the chicken poblano. All in all, the dishes were quite creative and had interesting flavors that we liked. The only drawbacks were the noise level and the price of some of the entrees."

  • "Food was excellent but two drawbacks. They did not have the wine onein the party wanted and second we felt rushed. They said they would be changing there menu in the next couple of days so they were out of the wine. In the past, they usually only bring one menu item at a time when the party is group dining. This time they brought 2 entrees and when one was finished brought the next and the same with the last choice. Since we were celebrating my birthday we wanted dessert but told them we wanted to wait a bit before ordering. They came back twice before we ordered. You could tell they wanted to turnover the table but we wanted to enjoy each other's company and the experience. The outdoor dining was lovely and more quiet than inside."

  • "Third time here, first two with wife. This time brought our kids who are high school/college age. Tried some usual favorites (hummus, pear salad, rack of lamb) along with a couple new. A new favorite is the mushroom risotto in an acorn squash shell. Also tried the Chilean sea bass. Although I personally am not a fish eater except for tuna out of a can and the occasional Filet-o-Fish, this was good stuff. Always enjoy the rack of lamb. Got the chocolate cake dessert which was excellent. I couldn't finish, not because it was huge but because I was already pretty full and the cake was quite rich. No drink this time but usually order the sangria which is light and fruity and not overly sweet as some can be. Everyone enjoyed, ready to go back!"
