Executive Chef Armando Gonzalez, whose experience includes Chicago"s most notable restaurants, pairs bold and exciting flavors for a seasonal menu of small plates ideal for sharing and experiencing the diverse mosaic of the countries that make up Latin America.



Noted mixologist Adam Seger has put together a fun and creative cocktail menu while Sommelier Shebnem Ince compiled a succinct wine list that complements the menu with by the glass and bottle selections.

  • "We have been to Libertad several times but this was the first time for brunch. We took our kids (3&7) and they were very accommodating. This is the 2nd time we've taken the kids and I would suggest going right when they open if taking kids for dinner. It gets a little loud and really busy. I highly recommend making a reservation."

The regularly changing amuse-bouche was a carrot and pepper soup that led the way into excellent flautas and a delightful lump crab cake The service continues to be fabulous. Perfectly attentive. The staff is outstanding. Libertad is fast becoming a favorite for us - and judging from the full house - for many others to."

  • "Food was really good. So were the drinks. Chocolate dessert was not as rich as the last time I was there. Nice sized sharing portions. Experience would have been better if the waitress knew anything about the food on the menu & you didn't have to ask for utensils or to have players removed & food cleaned off your table every time a new course came. Eat outside when weather permits where the ambiance is much preferred."

We sat outside on their cute patio, to avoid the noise inside. It was a cool evening but the heaters kept us comfortable. We had just come from the James Brown movie and they had a couple James Brown songs playing- perfect!"

  • "we were lucky enough to sit outside on a nice evening. as we passed through the inside on the way out of the restaurant, i was aware of how loud, noisy and smoky from the kitchen it was. i'm not sure i would have enjoyed the atmosphere inside the restaurant as i was sitting outside."

  • "We had dinner here for our anniversary. The service was very good. Friendly and attentive without being obtrusive. Cocktails were delicious. Although mine had jalapeno in it, it was not overly spicy, just enough kick to make it interesting. After reading reviews on this restaurant we ordered the octopus and flank steak which were outstanding. We also ordered the duck which we found to be very tender and delicious. The mashed parsnips flavored with nectarines were possibly my favorite. I would definitely recommend Libertad."

  • "great food, great service, but dining room a little small and tables are too close to each other. They also should give customers a choice of inside or outside reservation on Open table. We where there first time and had no idea that there was an outside patio. We would rather seat outside on a beautiful summer evening than in a dark crowded dining room."

  • "This was my 4th visit - so up front - I like Libertad. The risotto-stuffed acorn squash was the highlight of our meal - flavorful and hearty. The pollo was moist and tasty, but without a "pow" factor. Asada - perfectly cooked to order, piled high with frites. Service was overly attentive - one inquiry per course is enuf. Location is very convenient. It's a step above anything else in the area. However, it's SOO dark, I suggest that diners bring a flashlight or use your phone to read the menu!"

  • "One delicious plate after another, tapas style. Spectacular camarones, crab cakes, hummus (spicy!), pear salad, etc. Brownie and plum crisp desserts delicious too. Excellent service. Noise level a challenge for some guests in our party of eight. Kudos to patient and generous staff as we lingered a long time. Have already booked next visit."

  • " My group of 6 ladies ordered one of everything on the menu & shared. "Only" have 15 items (they were out of one). Favorites: Peras salad with thin slices of ripe pear, mushroom risotto served in a tasty roasted squash, carne asada, amish chicken. Loved the crunchy spiced garbanzo beans that were part of the octopus dish. Not fans of their crabcake. The chocolate dessert offering was disappointing. Lovely wine list, a few interesting beers & some tasty cocktails. Waitress knowledgeable, esp about wines, but could have been more attentive. The other staff made up for that pretty well. We were not rushed. Energetic but not too noisy. Nice patio but we ate indoors since it was drizzling. Wheelchair accessible. Clean bathroom. Price-y"

  • "Host did not recognize our reservation/special request for seating near door to accommodate some of the party with walking challenges--although I reserved on line--got confirmation a day AFTER going to restaurant. Food was excellent and had good presentation---had ordered hummus as an appetizer--needed more pita bread for our group of 4--was told there would be a $2 charge (yet there were no rolls/bread with the dinner)---seemed a bit of a CHEAP gesture on the part of the restaurant. Overall we felt RUSHED-and one of the party had his plate removed before he was even done! Would NOT rush to go back any time soon!!!!!!"

  • "Second time visiting this restaurant. First was couple years ago. Drinks not good. First asked for Tanqueray martini. They only had 1 kind of gin, something I had never heard of, but I tried it. Asked for lemon twist. Came out with lime slice. Gin was spicy and not good. Thinking perhaps mor Latin American, then ordered margarita. Bad. Felt extremely hurried and rushed. Small plate bite almost pushed out of my mouth by server delivering entree. Extremely loud and rushed."

  • "Smaller, sophisticated venue. The menu is not especially extensive for tapas, but there's a good range of selections and the food was excellent. Two plates are recommended per person or 3 or 4 per couple; we needed 2 dishes apiece plus dessert to satisfy our appetites. We can recommend the Peras, Poblano, Pulpo, Asada and Ciruela. Tables are very close both inside and out and the sound level is high; a little quieter on the patio."

  • "Libertad is a truly amazing restaurant. On Friday night we had a lovely table on the patio, and started the meal with a delicious Caipirinha cocktail. We ordered the Asian pear salad, risotto baked in a squash, poblano with goat cheese, shrimp, and octopus dishes. All 5 dishes were glorious. The waiter was attentive but not intrusive. I would give this restaurant 10 stars if I could. Thank you Libertad for being the best restaurant I have been to in decades!"

  • "Libertad is a wonderful gem of a restaurant in downtown Skokie, with a limited (15 item) menu of modern interpretations of a variety of Latin cuisines. Not to be missed items include the asian pear salad, the scallops served over black rice with long beans, and a lovely braised duck with habanero-apricot salsa. All dishes are well executed, a positive arising from the limited menu. Cocktails are an interesting lot, with several sangrias and an assortment of margaritas and other Latin inspired cocktails. One caveat - this is a small plates restaurant, so if you come with a hearty appetite, be prepared to spend over $30 per person before drinks - you'll need at least two plates per person."

  • "Went there for a joint wedding anniversary dinner and sat outside. My wife and I have been here many times but never sat outside. It was fantastic and not as loud as it is inside. Hugo was our waiter and did a great job recommending dishes for my wife's aunt who has a sensitive palate. We had the crane and it was wonderful and nicely paired with an Argentinian Cabernet Sauvignon at his suggestion. The pacing was great and we never felt rushed."

  • "I've eaten at Libertad in the past and have enjoyed the food. The restaurant, however, is very cramped with tables right next to each other so you feel like you are eating dinner with strangers, or eating at a caferteria lunch table. This time, when we arrived the restaurant was fairly empty, yet we were placed at a table right next to three people. I would have asked to change but I thought the restaurant would fill up. . .it did not. Nevertheless, throughout the meal one of the people next to us was apparently trying to sell a financial product to a couple...I felt like we were at a sales seminar with an very obnoxious speaker. The server took no notice and, for the most part gave very mediocre service. Will not be returning."

  • "Been here 4 times in past 2 years and food was always incredible. Has "open kitchen" concept. I would leave there smelling heavily of all foods. This time we sat on patio. Food was good - had: poblano, flautas, camarones. My friend and I agreed the shrimp had too much of a fishy taste other foods were delicious as usual. Service was so-so. My Open Table reservation request listed patio dining but the host seemed unaware. Had to ask for it after being led to indoor table. Was told there was patio dining but it was "tight" (was he concerned my pregnant self couldn't fit at the table?). Patio table was fine. Bus boy was not on top of things. Had to ask for flatware and linen napkins. Never got clean plates between dishes like past."

  • "Four of us went to brunch at Libertad. it was not busy. We ordered the eggs benedict, the omelette and a pork scramble. The pork scramble was the only dish that was half way okay. Have you ever heard of an omelette with peas? this dish was like eating a pea pie, disgusting. There were other vegetables in this rubbery concoction but there were so many peas that the other flavors were lost. There was no salt and pepper, hot sauce, not enough set ups on our table, (I had to get up and ask for all 3) and to make matters worse, a two top came in 20 minutes after we were seated, and they were served 10 minutes before we were. the music was too loud, even for the 24 year old who was dining with us. Worst brunch EVER."

  • "Our party of four had an incredible dinner on the lovely patio. Food and service were outstanding. The Asian Pear Salad was generous in portion and the candied pecans in the salad were a nice crunchy, sweet contrast. The stuffed poblano pepper with goat cheese was lightly fried and the pepper had just the right amount of heat. Our party also enjoyed the hummus (unique presentation), flautas, skirt steak, duck (literally falls off the bone) and crab cake. We each ordered a first and second course and it was more than enough food. This was our second visit to Libertad and we will keep it on our list for great dining experiences."

  • "Finally! A great restaurant in the neighborhood that would be worthy in any of the trendy areas in Chicago. The dishes are designed to share, so three or four for a couple is perfect. The menu changes regularly. The flavors are central/south American but very much the chef's creative inspiration. We had the poblano pepper ♡ a pear arugula salad ♡ polpo (octopus) ♡ Camarones (shrimp) ♡! I admit they had us hooked with the amuse bouche --a warm little cup of beet and serano pepper soup...yum! Service was attentive and very pleasant. Prices are reasonable for the quality ~ 14-18$ for more complex entrees. We are going back!"

  • "The food was delicious and beautufully presented. Our server Gabriel was very attentive and helpful. Our party of 4 ordered 6 plates. I would have liked to see the fish (camarones) and meat (asada) portions a little larger so that we each got a little more to eat as we split each dish 4 ways. Yes, we could have ordered more, but it is a bit expensive. We also ordered 2 desserts, one of which we were not charged for as it was my birthday. All in all. A very nice experience."

  • "Delicious food. Loved the asada and octopus. The hummus appetizer was tasty and the pear salad was perfect to share. Our waiter was not very pleasant and a bit lazy. We ordered a bottle of wine and he poured our first glass but never returned to pour another. We filled our own throughout the evening. We were there a month ago and had a wonderful waiter full of enthusiasm and energy. This time it was the opposite. Waiter seemed bored and no energy. Food was just as good but the overall experience was less fun because of the service."
