Diner Reviews
  • "I love this place. I try to stop here when I'm in Chicago. The food and service is always great."

  • "This was our first time at Libertad. We did hear good things-but our experience was just OK. The avocado salad was very good as well as the crab cake. The skirt steak dish was not very tasty and the meat was tough. The octopus was thick and hard, it really didn't taste good. Our server was very pushy. He leaned over us grabbing plates even before they were empty. The bus boy repeatedly hit into us with a dirty rag he was using to clean tables (gross) The bill was about $140.00 for 4 of us. It was extremely noisy and hard to have a conversation."

  • "Great Food and Service. Atmosphere not so great. I had a reservation but they tried to give me the absolute worst table in the place, right in front of the door. There really shouldn't have been a table there. After some argument we got a decent two top crowded along the wall where we could hear the conversations on both sides of us. I know they need to maximize revenue, but it might be smarter to take out a few tables to improve everyone's experience and get more repeat customers. Ask for specific tables or the bar when you reserve!"

  • "From the Pear salad dancing with caramailized pecans joined with creamy hummus partnered with homemade pita kicking off the culinary journey, to the banana and chocolate cake deserts accompanied with homemade ice cream concluding the trip, my maiden voyage to Libertad was a taste bud stimulating experience. Succulent lamb chops, done just right steak, and chorizo enhanced octopus were blended with ingredients hard to describe in words. Flautas made a very selective 10 year old very happy. Service was fantastic and recommendations right on point. Cost was economical compared to portions. With the flavors, portions and fusion a deal!"

  • "This place should definitely be in the city but luckily it isn't because it would be impossible to get a reservation - in my opinion. The brunch was delicious, their dinner also delicious. The drinks are fantastic!"

  • "Friday 4/4 was our first visit, but won't be our last. I think they're celebrating 3 years soon: we wish them continued success. We like the trend toward small plates that give you the chance to try more flavors and share. We had the poblano tempura, pulpo, and the scallops; each better than the last. We'll be coming back with friends in the near future so we can try more items! We were told that the menu changes from time to time to accommodate seasonal changes, and that the wine list changes correspondingly. Sounds good!"

  • "We went there on Friday at 6:00pm. The place is very small and it was packed. We enjoyed the food, but the rest could improve. The service was OK, but we felt rushed. Also, tables are set too close so you don't get any privacy and hear other conversations all the time. It was pretty annoying. The waiter did not give us any advice, suggestion, or even an extra minute, so we had to order everything right away without even thinking what this dish could be like. No time for conversation, just eat, pay and get out because other people are waiting. If I have to rush, I'll go to McDonald. Definitely not my kind of place..."

  • "The food was really good and lived up to good things I'd heard. Noise level is pretty high but, with effort, we were able to carry on a conversation. Portions are perfect for two to share and 3 plates plus dessert was satisfying for our appetites. People waiting to be seated eliminated a chance to linger but that's the price to pay for a really good, small restaurant in an unexpected neighborhood location."

  • "Skokie location seems unusual but don't miss this gem!"

  • "I highly recommend Libertad for anyone who enjoys eclectic cuisine. An excellent blend of flavors in unique very fresh dishes. The staff is very friendly and they quietly check on your table as you enjoy your evening."

  • "We have eaten here a number of times and really love this place. Very creative food and good service. The salads are wonderful and unusual. It is a bit cramped and can be too noisy for easy conversation."

  • "Excellent food and cocktail / wine selection. Will go back but be warned, it's loud."

  • "I don't go out for the most part, but I had an old friend come into town. I decided that I'd finally go to Libertad, as it has been recommended by many neighbors. I live close by, so we walked over. The flavors were excellent. The food was brought in pleasantly timed installments, which allowed us to continue our conversation throughout the evening. We spent a couple of hours tasting great food and drinks, and the experience was just what the doctor ordered."

  • "Everything from the food to the drinks was really good. The dishes are served as tapas style. We were a party of 3 and ordered about 5 different meat entrees. That seemed to be enough food. We also had mixed drinks which were very good. The presentation of the food was very interesting. Service was also great. We had dinner at about 6 pm so it was not packed yet but I imagine it will be. We will definitely be returning here!!"

  • "My wife and I drove up from the city not really knowing what to expect. We didn't do any research ahead of time as we had an 'A La Card' Chicago Card and were going to use it regardless. We were very impressed as soon as we walked in the door. The environment was great and the food was even better. You will not regret your trip to Libertad."

  • "We have never been disappointed in our dining experience at Libertad. The only problem with recommending it is that will just continue to get more difficult in securing a reservation. If you enjoy Latin themed food, it is the best. All is delicious and beautifully served."
    Dined on 3/27/2014
  • "Very good, the portions are generous, and the selection excellent. We have been here several times, and each time it does not disappoint!"
    Dined on 3/27/2014
  • "Good small plate menu with lots of variety. Wine and beer choices are fine. We had 4 people and split 6 items from the menu which seemed like the right amount to order. Pricing is reasonable."

  • "What a great little gem. Great food, great drink and nice ambience."
    Dined on 3/23/2014
  • "The only thing wrong with Libertad is how hard it is to get a reservation.... but that should be expected because of the amazing food. Portions are generous, menu is robust with out being overwhelming, wine selection fantastic. Will go back there again and again."

  • "This is a fabulous Latin fusion restaurant with outstanding food. Must have the hummus, octopus, flautas, lamb and crab cakes for your first time. Return for the other items on the menu!"
    Dined on 3/22/2014
  • "Enjoyed three small plates to share with my husband and each one was interesting and very well done. Only complaint is that the noise level made talking across the table challenging. We were early, so I can imagine that it only got worse once it filled up. If you aren't interested in a lot of conversation- go there!"

  • "We had a great experience. The food and service were wonderful and we definitely plan to return."
    Dined on 3/16/2014
  • "This is our nth time there and each one is as good or better than the last. The hummus is the best ever. If you like some spice, I've never had better. The bread with the hummus comes warm and you can make a meal of itself. The menu keeps changing for the better, with many of the old standards still there, but nice new additions. Margarita Rojo is fantastic using hum, a liquor that adds something special to the drink. We can't wait for the summer patio to open. Don't miss this place."

  • "The five of us ordered seven small plates, mostly fish and crab cakes and vegetarian. Everything was outstanding except for the chicken breast, which was only fair. In my Zagat rating, I would give it a 25."

  • "We had a great experience. Food was outstanding and service was superb. Understanding that it was a tapas-style restaurant, we knew that the plates would be smaller than usual. We also were delighted we didn't have to travel into the city for a night out. However, I think that the prices should be lower if the food on the plate is less. ( Two tiny lamb chops?) The steak dish was wonderful. The drinks were fine but, again, margaritas, at $10 a drink is on the high end. I ordered a cheaper drink. Overall, it was an excellent experience.Just be prepared to order 3-4 plates a couple, excluding drinks, or you will leave a little hungry."

  • "Overall the food was delicious. The only thing I was disappointed was that the tables are so close to each other. Other than that the food was very very good."

  • "This was my second time at Libertad if I heard about it sooner it would have been alot more than that! Great food, great service cannot ask for more."
    Dined on 3/14/2014
  • "Not sure there is much one can do about it given the small space and proximity of tables to bar and to open kitchen but the last time I went, the noise level was extremely high. Otherwise everything was great."
    Dined on 3/13/2014
  • "Worth the short drive from the city. Nice mix of flavors, good cocktails. Small intimate space. One critique is the open kitchen, added some smoke to the room."
    Dined on 3/13/2014
  • "The food is very good. Lots of great flavor but, the tables are small and very close. The tables are unusual in that the table leg was between my legs and very uncomfortable. I have sat at the bar before for this reason but, the open kitchen resulted in leaving with my clothes smelling like the food that was cooked. For this reason, as much as I like the food, I visit quite infrequently."

  • "The sign is small so look for it but the food was AMAZING -- try the Barbacoa for sure, and the fried cheese-stuffed poblano pepper. All the food was amazing -- all to share, but worth it to eat the entire plate yourself!!! We had a great time and couldn't have asked for a better experience."

  • "The restaurant changes a couple of items from each category (vegetarian, meat and fish ) every few months. One of my companions had the sea bass, a new item for me at this restaurant. It was cooked perfectly and melted in the mouth. We also had the scallops and asada which are always wonderful. The drinks and desserts were also great hits. This place never fails to satisfy in a big way."

  • "The food was amazing. I had skirt stake and it was melting in my mouth. Hummus was so good I wanted to order another one but I was too full. Cocktails were so yummy."

  • "A lovely local small plate/tapas restaurant that was lively and fun on a Sunday night. . The waiter explained several dishes to our table of guests of four and when we perused the menu we discovered he had covered everything. As it turned out, everything we ordered was delicious. They started us out with a wonderful soup to cleanse our palate, gratis. We tried two small plate salads and four small plate entrees for four people and had to share one dessert because we couldn't eat anymore. Everything was delicious. I think the octopus was the real standout. Unlike many other tapas restaurants I have been to, each plate had unique flavors and were served fresh and hot from grill steps away. Service was excellent. Highly recommended."

  • "We came here to celebrate one of our friend's birthday and we all left feeling that this was the best meal we ever ate. Their style is small plates that are meant to be shared. Since this was our first time coming here, they recommended 5 - 6 plates for out party of 4. We started with drinks which were Margarita Roja, Manhattans and white wine - all great. Our dishes were the scallops, octopus, crab cake, skirt steak, and lamb. Everything was excellant but only 3 scallops in the order so we ordered another one - couldn't get enough black rice. For dessert we ordered the Tarta de Platano and they comped us with soft chocolate cake since we were celebrating. A drawback was the tables are very close together. Can't wait to come back."

  • "I had to shout to my friend across a small table. But otherwise, in the top 10 dining experiences of my life. It was easily the best grilled octopus I have ever tried!"

  • "We were so surprised when we dined here last night. The food is outstanding and so is the service. To find a restaurant like this in the suburbs is amazing. Prices a better than Chicago restaurants. Noise level a little too high. But we would return again."

  • "The food at Libertad was outstanding - unique combinations of ingredients made up small plates - one was better than the next. Foodies will love the varied menu and the seasonal food ingredients. I can't wait to go back and try their Sunday brunch and many of their other dishes for dinner. The wait staff is courteous, professional and extremely knowlegable about the food. Definitely make a reservation as the place gets full very quickly. I saw the restaurant reviewed on Check Please as did the customers sitting next to me. We were glad we checked the place out for ourselves."
