  • "A fantastic local French bistro, just like you'd see in Paris. Comfortable atmosphere and terrific service. Fresh and delicious ingredients put together like only the French can!"

  • "we went there two consecutive days. Remarkable and reasonable priced wine list. We had a Cahors (solis) and a wine from toro (flor de vetus).Excellent and speedy service. Excellent lamb and veal kidneys. Also the starters marrow bone, salmon tartar and foie gras were remarkable. The dessert ile flotante rounded it up. Next time in Montreal , we are back."

  • "Recommended by everyone including the maitre d at another prominent restaurant and deserves every word. Having been to Paris it is a quintessential French bistro but with extraordinary food. One of the best meals my wife and I have ever had. Anyone with an appreciation for fine food and visiting Montreal should make this restaurant a guaranteed stop."

  • "Interesting experience. Food was good and served nicely, the entrée menu we felt was a little short. Details of service at times were slow. I am glad we tried it, do not know if I would go out of my way to eat there again."

  • "With all the great restaurants in Montreal, this one is in the middle of the pack. The Hugh Grant look alike waiter was decent and the food was all very good along the service. It is a typical bistro and if you only have three or four meals in Montreal, I would go with another choice."

  • "Lots of Italian dishes on the menu, but French touches like a jar of cornichons on the table."

  • "Food was fantastic. Service was great, very attentive and polite. We had a great night and will go back again we are in Montreal!"

  • "Everything you'd expect of a classic bistro - black and white tiled floors, the regimented service, the jars of dijon mustard and cornichons on the table, and the extensive wine list. We had the octopus and lentil salad, the lobster risotto, and a roasted guinea fowl. Not somewhere to go if you're looking for innovative or exciting food, but the dishes were are all fantastically prepared classics."

  • "I had heard so much about L'Express but it turned out to be a huge disappointment. The food was not great but was overpriced. I got lobster risotto and the lobster pieces were over cooked, rubbery and chewy. I had to spit it out because I couldn't chew it any longer. The waiter asked if I didn't like the risotto because I had hardly eaten any. I told him how it was but he did not really seem to care. My friend from out of town got the quails and he was it was 'ok'. Overall it was an expensive place with bad food."

  • "Delicious meal. Outstanding service. Impeccable attention to detail."

  • "It has authentic Parisian bistro menu and quality of food is amazing. The fish soup was full of flavor, the duck confit salad was perfect. I've eaten duck confit all over Paris and this is right up there."

  • "Dinner at L'Express surpassed our expectations. We were greeted promptly and seated at the exact time of our reservation. Our waiter was friendly but professional. And the best part, of course, was the dinner, not just interesting choices but also amazing preparation. I had a beet salad unlike any I had ever had before and a breast of chicken in a mustard sauce that was cooked so well, that I am still wondering how they did it. Also, the Burgundy wine was superior. I am missing that too!"

  • "The restaurant has a nice ambience with authentic decor and decoration. The service was very cold and unfriendly with very little care to welcome and assist with ordering. Food was nice however not a great deal of pride taken in presentation and delivery to our table."

  • "My bf and I decided on a late dinner here after reading excellent reviews online, and L'Express did not disappoint. The restaurant is open late, and many people came in after we were sat at 9:30. Our waiter was very friendly and translated the specials menu and explained the items in detail. adding personal touches (like how his mother used to make a particular meal so that was his favorite) and making many menu and wine suggestions. We had the asparagus salad, ragout and bone marrow for appetizers (definitely get the marrow, amazing!) and shared the poached salmon with buerre blanc sauce for an entree. Everything was absolutely divine, and we will be sure to return on our next trip to Montreal."

  • "L'express is definitely a restaurant I would recommend. It is a very romantic place where you can enjoy a really great meal with an excellent service. The team over there is simply incredible. Try the brunches first and you'll see how amazing that place is!"

  • "My family came to visit and we went to L'Express for dinner. I had heard wonderful things about the service and ambience. When reserving, I specified that we'd like a more private area of the restaurant, instead we were placed in the middle of the floor. It was so loud that I couldn't hear the person across from me. Our server was EXTREMELY rude. She was curt and impatient when we had questions. She may as well have rolled her eyes. My aunt asked for a "sweet Merlot-like" wine rec. and the waitress treated her like an idiot and called her out for not using the term "fruity". I have NEVER experienced such a rude server in my life. I plan on contacting the restaurant to formally complain. The food didn't make up for this terrible experience."

  • "Consistently very good food and excellent, friendly service with the ambience and decor of a classic French bistro. Have dined at L'Express for over 30 years and have never been disappointed with our dining experience there. Also, their hours of operation permit a very good meal at an early hour if you are going to a concert, opera, etc."

  • "If you love Paris Brasseries but can't afford to fly there every time you crave their ambience and cuisine, here is the answer. Eat here. L'Express was all I hoped for. Yes it was somewhat loud but the noise was animated conversations from excited diners. For a first I had Octopus and lentils with a vinaigrette. It was fresh with just a light vinaigrette. Then I had the Steak Tartar (spicy) and it was delicious. My wife had Poached Salmon with chervil and loved it. For a wine our waiter (Brian?- who has been there for 27 years) helped us chose a Languedoc wine that was excellent. Desert was a Lemon Tart and decaffeinated coffee that tasted like real coffee. We Saw other diners marevl at the Rum Baba. L'Express was a trip to Pari."

  • "Food and service was very good, is definitely a good french restaurant option, the only thing is that like is a small restaurant is a kind of noisy, so you have to speak loud. So it is not a good option for a romantic dinner or something quiet. The ambiance is not that wow. But in general is a good option. "

  • "Have eaten here twice and both times the food was amazing. The service is great. The wine recommendations were great too. And it's all reasonably priced for the excellent quality. One of the best of montreal ... easily."

  • "Simple French bistro fare done superbly. Just a great place."

  • "A very typical French Bistro, nothing fancy but fun and had a lot of energy. Waiters were very efficient and helpful. Huge wine list! We loved our starters, hardboiled eggs with mayo and the Pâté', they were both amazing. However main meals were just okay. The risotto was salty and watery and the Lamb shank was bland. I think if we went back we would pick more starters and wine and maybe share a main dish. Overall we liked the restaurant and all of it's energy!"

  • "Lacking in ambience, terrible bright lighting, poor seats, layout and zero effort on table settings or décor - the food is decent but doesn't outweigh the lack of presence. Establishment or not, this restaurant has lost any charm or character it might have once had. A disappointment."

  • "Loved dining here, definitely a highlight of Montreal. Ambiance was nice, very classic. Great food and service. No complaints and a very reasonable price for a high end dinner."

  • "When i walked out of L'Express i wouldn't have been surprised to walk out into Paris. The place is very reminiscent of the kind of classic bistro you get in France and does a good job of cooking simple French classics. I had chicken in mustard sauce followed by a creme caramel with orange. Both were excellent and make the place worth a return visit."

  • "Our American friends loved L'Express. Food and service were excellent. Their ONLY complaint is that the address and name are not clearly evident and, as a consequence, their taxi driver had great difficulty finding the location."
    Dined on 5/26/2014
  • "L'Express is one of those places where everything is just right. The food is excellent without being showy. The wine list is outstanding. The staff is expert and knowledgeable, and seems to be telepathic!. Atmosphere is busy and vibrant, but not excessively so. Wonderful place that you can come back to again and again (as many people do, considering how busy it is!)."
