    Dined on 4/12/2014
  • "In the past I always loved the food ;I usually ordered the veal kidneys. This time the sauce was very bland;the potatoes not very good.My friend had the " joue de boeuf' ;she liked the meat very much but the vegetables on the side were not tasty at all. We were wondering if there was a new chef or new management;we did not recognize any of the staff."

  • "The risotto aux crevettes was very good & the portion generous. The home-made ravioli was also very good but the portion was a bit skimpy. Also, the ravioli was not advertised with a mushroom sauce, which was an issue with the person ordering and not liking mushrooms at all! The beet salad was delicious. The tartlette aux citron portion was generous. It was difficult getting a reservation for the time that we wanted - had to settle for a 9:45PM reservation. The staff was very friendly and approachable."

  • "The menu remains the same. Nowhere else serves sorrel soup. My friends feel as entranced as me. Bone marrow! Again outside of Paris and Le Select in Toronto nowhere else serves this. When I bring guests the steak frites is forever a pleaser. The creme caramel is as good as it gets. This is true Parisian dining in one of the most authentic environments imaginable. The cliental is vibrant and and the dinners are fully engaged. The service is exceptional in every way. I hope that I may continue to enjoy dining at L'Express for 30 more years!"

  • "we love this restaurant and have never had a poor meal or service. always great for romantic or intimate dinners as well as birthday party group..."

  • "Food and service were outstanding. I felt welcome, respected, and the food was just ridiculously amazing (warm goat cheese salad, braised lamb, and house ravioli). Toronto needs to learn from this. We had a beautiful bottle of pinot noir for $30; not $80 - $120 like I'd pay here. Please make time to check this place out if you're in Montreal."

  • "I really enjoyed l'Express! Service is perfect. Food is good! It's like à cheap way to travel to Paris for one night!"
    Dined on 3/31/2014
  • "Very attentive service. We were greeted warmly. Having arrived before our reservation time, we were offered the option to take a table that was in a more crowded area or waiting a few minutes for one with more room and a better view. Delicious steak/ frites and fish soup. When we are in Montreal, we always like to eat at L'Express for the excellent bistro dishes, the good service and the ambience."

  • "L'Express is a great place to go if you're visiting Montreal or looking for a place to celebrate a big event. Amazing food and wine and great service."
    Dined on 3/19/2014
  • "The service was excellent, the food was just ok. The good thing was the server was very knowledgable about gluten and he reviewed every item on the menu with me, so I would know exactly what was gluten free. That was great!"

    Dined on 3/28/2014
  • "Loved the homemade ravioli and the lemon tart. We were disappointed with the bone marrow, as we expected it to be much tastier... It would have been more flavorful if it were roasted instead of steamed."
    Dined on 3/23/2014
  • "Food was good and ambiance was special. Feels like your in an old-fashioned French movie. Good for casual dining or dinner with good friends. Extensive wine list. Dislikes: Paper napkins, tiny wine glasses."
    Dined on 3/22/2014
  • "We went to Montreal looking for some special meals and L'Express did not disappoint. The service and selection are above expectation and the ambience is only outdone by the quality of the food. Wow! Steak Frites were outstanding and the Bone Marrow beyond compare! End with the Rum Cake but only if you're not driving - wow, it's strong and wonderful."

  • "Well diversified short menu. Classics from the french cuisine executed perfectly. Great service. Feels like any quality bistro in Paris. Never dissapointing."

  • "The best liver I've had in years, done perfectly to order, beautifully served. Delicious with frites. The beet salad was also outstanding."

  • "We have been going there since the early 80's. Always a pleasure to go back. Great ambience. Always packed. Great service. Even menu hasn't changed, classic bistro food, French touch."

  • "Great food, excellent champaign, the salmon and home made pasta were to die for. Overall, great great meal."

  • "Loved everything about the restaurant except for the closeness of the tables. We were a party of 2 and were seated at a table for 2 which was inches away from the next table for 2...felt like we were at a table for 4 with 2 other strangers. The food was great!"

  • "Except Dominion is better, in almost every way. I was actually surprised by the food quality - quite good. A bit expensive for what it was though, and could use more flavour. Soup was bland, although the octopus and lentil salad was great without much added given the delicate flavour. Dessert was a bit on the sweet side."

  • "If you are looking for fantastic decor or something trendy, don't come here. L'Express is about perfection of the classics. Nothing more, nothing less. Best steak and fries! Excellent wine collection with some good by-the-glass choices. Wait staff don't make a fuss, no personal introductions - just really good service. Excellent value too."

  • "Lives up to the hype. Steak Frites is ridiculously good. Wine menu is superb. All around, awesome."

  • "Delicious experience. My wife and I arrived around 5pm for supper. Our first waitress was snooty and unfriendly, but the atmosphere was great, and the wine as well. Fortunately for us, it was a shift change and our waitress was finished for the evening. The rest of the service we received was excellent. Friendly but not overbearing-- competent and knowledgable w(e both worked as servers in Chicago years ago so we know the the scene). The food was exceptional. Everything cooked to perfection. I had poached salmon, my wife the sea bass. We left after consuming a $45 fine bottle of Cab-Merlot from Bordeaux, a shared apply, both our meals, and a shared desert for $135. Excellent value."

  • "Recommended by family. Great location and nice inside. Servers were actually very nice which I read on tripadvisor that they tended to be a bit rude. Service was also very fast. Did seem somewhat impersonal though and the food was not great. We both had steak frites- fries were good, but the steak was very chewy, tough cheaper cut of meat. A bit undercooked for my liking as well. Given the quality of the food the price was a bit steep. Likely won't go here again."

  • "Split a half bottle of wine and each had steak tartar. Finished with a tarte au sirop d'erable and digestifs. A great French bistro experience in North America!"

  • "A bistro ambiance with simple but very well executed classic dishes. Always good, the chef stays focus on the quality. No tricky presentation, only the taste and the freshness. Nerver know you may be dining with and actor or actress beside you."

  • "the dining room is long and narrow the tables are packed. we had the fish soup which was ok not great. the croutons had melted cheese on it so the where difficult to cut in the bowl you had to take them and cut them on the plates.my companion had the veal liver which was cooked the way he had ordered it. I had the beef tartare and it was well prepared but nothing outstanding. with a bottle of wine , it cost 136$ without the tip."

  • "The two of us spent several happy months in Paris (a long time ago), L'Express brings it all back, A solid Bistro style restaurant that would be popular at a Parisian venue and admired by the locals. It is absolutely solid-not flashy or modern but just right. The wine list should not be underestimated. For offal lovers the kidneys are super. In a city with superb restaurants of all flavors-L'Expres always calls us back."

  • "Had the bone marrow this past summer in Strasbourg, France and have been craving it since. Thrilled to find a place in Montreal that I was visiting - and it was just as spectacular! The service and efficiency was great, our mains (the quail and the pot au feu) were good but portion size was fairly small. Very impressive wine list! Ambience was nice - upscale and classy retro feel with some original staff from the 80s still waiting tables. Odd there's no signage outside with the restaurant name. Perhaps it's just a 'known' little gem. Lucky to have found it on the internet."

  • "L'Express has been and continue to be the best French Bistro in Montreal, classic menu with some "plats du jour" that change regularly, nice wines and good service. Always enjoy returning to dine there. If you haven't been and you like French food, its a place to try."

  • "After an initial period of abandonement sans water in a sea of loud crowded tables the service and ambience improved. Our busbuy/server revived us with water and wonderful cornichons out of a big pickle jar. Appetizers of bone marrow and fois gras were exceptional and the main courses even better including savory home made meat raviolis with veal stock and quail cooked to perfection. Wine list interesting and eclectic, but well represented from new and old worlds. We enjoyed a half bottle of 8 y.o. Cahors."
