Diner Reviews
  • "Levant is excellent. Creative fresh and delicious. Very accomodating to food restrictions. I LOVE this place."

  • "We visited levant for an anniversary/birthday celebration and we loved it. The restaurant is a simple design with an outdoor area almost as big as inside. The food is amazing and beautifully presented. The lamb was the star of the show - 4 different cuts on one delicious plate - and the duck was also great, coming with heirloom wheat that gave fabulous texture. The service was friendly and professional and left you feeling that they were going as fast or slow as you wanted for each course. A wonderful evening - we will visit again."

  • "This was our first visit. We joined two other couples who have enjoyed Levant for some time and were delighted with the entire experience. Delicious, innovative menu. Cordial, relaxed, comfortable atmosphere, which we look forward to enjoying again. Attractive patio/terrace during summer months."

  • "Very unique menu, with very creative pairings. If you are tired of seeing the same thing on the menu everywhere you go, give this gem a try!"

  • "While visiting portland found this superb restaurant. Best pita bread I ever ate, including visiting Israel! Terrific menu and all our dishes were memorable."

  • "A wonderful dining experience. The menu was very different and so full or wonderful flavors. The decor is beautiful, service excellent. A Californian who has dined at served top Portland resturants while visiting, this has so far been my favorite dinning experience. I am Vegeterian and found lots of selections. Must say all the meat and fish platers looked and smelled amazing too."

  • "good vibe, very quiet for a Saturday night, no walk ins - restaurant might be targeting a different clientele , perhaps it would do better in Seattle like Mamnoon in Cap Hill. It will be likely difficult for Levant to attract the neighborhood given the flavor profile and price point. Across the way the Matador chain was taking most of the walk in crowd."

  • "Was having trouble getting reservations on a Saturday at some of my favorite haunts. I had seen Levant before and always wanted to give it a try but I read some mixed reviews and a visit became a lower priority. We went on Saturday and I was extremely impressed. Start with some hummus and garbanzo beans - choose a salad and Order the lamb for the table! This is as good as it gets in my book for the price and ambiance. Had a great bottle of wine with dinner and impressed friends who had wanted to visit Nostrana. It will reside at the top of all of our lists for places to go!"

  • "When you are 60% empty on a Friday night, service should have more focus, not less."

  • "My wife and I were looking for a menu that would be unique even in Portland and Levant did not disappoint. The marinated octopus starter was cooked perfectly and the Quail on Polenta entree had a really nice combination of flavors that helped Levant be just different enough from other restaurants to make it memorable."

  • "Our party of 4 dined at Levant on Saturday night. We all thought it looked beautiful as we entered with the low sun setting and the patio dining open. We sat inside with the open window right there. We tried 9 plates between us and then 2 desserts. We loved the food! The Cornish game hen was wonderful! There was plenty of food . So creative! The staff work really well together and the chef seems very relaxed while orchestrating it all. take a peek in the kitchen and private dining in the back. "

  • "Wonderful food, very good wine list, friendly & efficient service, lovely decor. Our table could have been a tad larger, but maybe we just ordered too many dishes (we enjoyed them all)! We will certainly dine at Levant again and highly recommend it to others."

  • "This is my new favorite restaurant in Portland. Before my hubby and I went, I thought it was another kebab-and-hummus-house. I was SO wrong. The food at LEVANT is totally new, yet the flavors are strangely familiar, but with fantastic twists, combinations, and presentations. Try the lamb fingers, fried green almonds, chicory/anchovy salad (mouth-watering!), grilled calçot!...the list goes on and on. As if the food wasn't stupendous enough, the WINE LIST is astounding. Beautiful list of wines, and the wine steward/waiter/manager/owner? was so hospitable, helpful and inviting. What a nice place! Our new neighborhood haunt."

  • "the food and cocktails were excellent. period. we were happily stuffed "

  • "Very good food and service. The appetizer selection could be improved. The music was too "frenetically mosque"- we mended less of a religious experience! (-: The sturgeon was one of the best pieces of fish I ever had and the lamb was outstanding as were the desserts and cocktails."

  • "We made dinner plans late at Levant because they had a table open at the time we needed. The service was initially slow but after our drinks came (delicious and different) we became more patient. The place was hoppin. Lots of seemingly happy customers lingering over their meals. The menus seemed short and several items had sold out by our 8:15pm reservation, but again these issues were quickly forgiven once the food arrived. The pita and hummus were fantastic. The carrot salad exceptional. The salt cod balls were good but all this was overshadowed by the scrumptious lamb plate. We loved the food and loved the variety. An exceptional meal and a very pleasant surprise. "

  • "Food really leaves something to be desired....tastes were not authentic and incredibly over spiced. Food is tremendously overpriced, portions are very small, the selection is limited. It would be a much better place if they put more emphasis on food quality instead of trying to be hip and cool. "

  • "About the best meal I have every had! We put ourselves in Brent's very capable hands, and he came through with flying colors. The mix of small plates, salads, and entree's that we shared was perfect, made only better by the recommended wines. A 10 PLUS experience!"

  • "Everything about Levant is extraordinary. The service is impeccable, the staff is very attentive and pleasant, and the ambiance is very welcoming. The food is an amazing blend of flavores. The chef is always introducing new items to the menu, which allows you to be pleasantly surprised when you visit them repeatedly. It's one of the best places in Portland! "

  • "The meat dishes were very good. But the hummus used too much garlic and not enough lemon or salt. Pita is very fresh but the timing is off so you might be looking at a bowl of hummus and have to wait awhile for pita. Drinks were good if a little slow. Wine list is impressive. Including an Israeli wine by the glass. Service started very slowly but improved over the evening. Dessert choices offer a nice variety. Lot of construction in area made parking difficult on a Friday night."

  • "This was our second visit here and it was once again, GREAT! I had the calamari which was super delicious and such a large portion! The lentil soup was tasty as well and we also tried the fried cheese which was practically dessert! My husband loved the beef Kofta and drinks were quite tasty! We will be back :)"

  • "I almost skipped it due to a bad review in the Oregonian, but I would have missed out on an excellent restaurant. We had a mixture of small plates and a main entree. From the lentil soup with the beautiful broth, to the spanikopitas made with nettles, leeks and fennel, we felt nourished and stimulated by the wood fired crusts, lovely spices, and excellent cooking. The Game hen was tasty and plentiful, the octopus was soft and fresh. With the wood fire in the background, and the pleasantly exotic music played overhead, we had a memorable evening. My only criticism would be the echoing dining room, but the tables are set pretty far from each other, so it's easy to overlook."

  • "Service was helpful and patient. There were many terms and dishes unfamiliar to us and our waiter led us through them and helped us order just the right amount. Personally I felt the food was really hit or miss, the fried chickpeas were excellent, the brussels sprouts were...well, awful (holy moley tough, overwhelmed with smoke flavor). The two salads we had (beet, kress) were delicious, fried cheese with honey and walnut so-so, and etc. The restaurant was full and the noise level gets pretty high, not impossible to handle but quite loud. All in all a solid B grade, good, but with all the choices in Portland, not good enough to bring us back right away."

  • "Our table ordered 7 items and each one was delicious. Flavors were pure and exciting, layered without being complex. LOVED the grilled octopus hot appetizer and the sturgeon entree. So mouthwateringly delicious! We're already looking forward to going back and sharing this gem with good friends."

  • "Levant has a very pleasant atmosphere. Seating is comfortable and not crowded. Our group has fried chick peas in za'atar, spicy cold poached shrimp, fried cauliflower, roasted Brussel sprouts and wood fired pita with hummus and chick peas as starters to share. Each of these dishes were perfect for sharing and well prepared. Our entrees choices were hearth roasted Lamb, whole grilled Branzini and sturgeon. Each dish was tasteful and adequate portions. For dessert we shared Lemon Curd donuts and Chocolate torso with cardamom creme anglaise along with a glass of sauterne and madeira. Although the wine list is reasonable for a $20 corkage fee we splurged on our own Burgundian wines. All in all a very good dining experience."

  • "Portion sizes were very small for the price points. Pita was doughy and not baked through, hummus was bland and boring. Octopus had no seasoning and should have had twice as much lentils with it. The lamb cuts were great, but again the rice portion should have been doubled. The honey with the kasseri cheese tasted of low quality and didn't stand up to the cheese. The waiter told us that the menu was designed for sharing, but there just wasn't enough to go around. Cocktails were great, but the rest of the drink menu was quite small. Waitstaff was professional and knowledgable."

  • "Great food and an awesome atmosphere i would recommend this place to anyone, the fried cheese and the lamb are especially good and the Brussel sprouts (if you are a fan) are excellent with the lamb bacon."

  • "Really special food - complex flavors and intriguing ingredients plus a spectacular selection of house cocktails (every bit as exotoc and unique as the dishes). We will definitely be back."

  • "Our party of 4 had a terrific meal at Levant. We shared everything which allowed us to try many dishes. Everything was delicious, top-notch. Great wine list. Attentive service. Lovely space and ambience. The best part of the experience was the broader flavor palette. Portland needed this restaurant. Can't wait to go back! (P.S. We're picky)"

  • "This was our second time here. ALL the food was absolutely delicious. We tried three small snack plates, about five cold apps and three cold apps, plus one entrée. There were four of us. We couldn't stop ordering new things. Each plate was even better than the previous one. Very welcoming place, nice décor. Everyone very friendly. I would (and do) recommend this restaurant to everyone. We think it's one of the best (the best?) in Portland."

  • "The reviews were good and I love middle eastern fusion. Sadly, the meals we ordered were very bland. The hand I selected was dry and without flavor. Lastly, we selected the donuts for dessert. It was quite apparent that the fryer had other things cooking in it before the dog. Everything was off."
