Before they moved, we were regular. In new location, after six dinners, we quit. Foods no longer the same. We had a visitor from Finland this week for lunch, no other sensible choices, so tried again. Wow! The best in Boston right now.

We thoroughly enjoyed the degustation menu, full of fabulous combinations of flavors, textures and colors. A favorite was the delicate East Coast halibut with Apple Street Farm turnip, buttermilk, lemon purée and crab apple-lemon ginger fumet. Wow! The cheese selection was outstanding, and the wine pairing perfect particularly when enhanced by the sommelier sharing his knowledge with us. Service as always impeccable. Hard to beat this beautiful place although we do miss the old Back Bay townhouse.

The service was outstanding, but the food wasn't so good the first dish was 6 of 10 The main corse was 0 of 10. I orderd grilled duck it was dripping blood. I took the first bite and it was like gum. I couldn't even finish the first bite. I told them to take it and make well done but still it wasn't that good I didn't even finish my plate.

Lovely special dinner since it was our anniversary. Loved the foie gras fritters! Would have liked a few more instead of the plain fritter. Intriguing mix of ciders not what I expected. I prefer the sweet my husband liked them and we appreciated learning about the various ciders and history. Nice touch on the surprise petit chocolate cake. Lovely evening!

Having gone to tea service in every major city all over the world, I was a little disappointed with LEspalier . The room was lovely, the staff, snobby and not welcoming and warm. It was empty so there was not staffing problem. It did not feel like they know how to serve tea,and all the goodies or care to ! Will go back to Ritz or 4 seasons where they make it feel special and keep waiting on you and bringing all the sandwiches, desserts and tea refills without having to ask !!!

This place is ok for a special occasion. Nice setting and quiet atmosphere. They are also very accommodating. The food however, was a bit of a disappointment. The fois gras was bland and was presented without toasted pieces of bread. I asked for more bread, which was provided beforehand, and it took around ten minutes before any was provided. For the entree we ordered the duck (which feeds two), and let me just say, it smelled and looked better than it tasted. The first bite was extremely gamey in taste, to the point it made me nauseated. I actually had to leave the table for a few minutes. The service was good though, apart from the fois gras issue. Very nice people.

We received a $300 gift certificate to eat there. Even though we ordered the least expensive option and only two glasses of wine, the total, with tip, came to $340, and parking at the Pru was another $38. While some of the food was fair to reasonably good, some items were what one might call "experimental" and did not taste very good at all. There is absolutely no reason for us to ever go back again or to recommend this restaurant to any of our friends.

Our server, Spencer, was absolutely fabulous--the consummate professional, helpful, kindly, knowledgeable, present when needed assistance w/o hovering. He's a treasure!!! Loved the presentation of butter (piped, looked like flames on a stone) and the Parker House rolls melted in your mouth. Food was delicious and artful. The decor is stiff, cold and formal--a big open room, not an inviting place that beckons friends to savor great food and conversation (although window views of Boylston Street are great. We miss the Gloucester location of yore (although understand the difficulty for kitchen and wait staff there Also, a reasonable lunch combo or prix fixe might put it on guest's radar screen and return more frequently.

We went their to celebrate my partner's birthday. We got seated in a room that looked like an elegantly setup study room with a lot of books covering almost 2 entire walls. Though the room got filled up around 7pm, it did not feel like the the place was crowded or loud. The staff was very courteous and attentive. The food was excellent: I was so surprised to learn that raw oysters go so well with champagne mousse and caviar. I also had one of the best venison preparations ever. Very impressive wine list as well. We were so glad we went there.

It seems that the chef has found a new favorite ingredient--a really bitter kind of chocolate sauce. I found it in multiple of our dishes. I think I understand the intention of using it but it was a bit too bitter for me. Still, everything else tasted fantastic as usual, creative as usual. Service was great, but I would be more satisfied had the waiters communicated with my boyfriend also, not just me. Maybe it's a French thing to just talk to one person at the table I don't know. Overall, I've never been disappointed by L'Espalier and will definitely come back.

L'Espalier is a great restaurant to go to to celebrate a special occasion. The servers are very attentive. The restaurant offers two different menus, but we chose the 6 course menu for $115.00 over the 3 course menu for $95 because the 2 best choices on that menu had an upcharge. We were disappointed that the foie gras course was a mousse because we would have preferred it seared. The lamb chop was delicious, but there was only one chop per person which wasn't enough. The cheese course was the best! We each got to sample 6 different cheeses, and we were even offered a seventh cheese! The dessert was an apple mixture in a glass jar. We were told after the fact that we could have substituted one of the other desserts, but it was too late.

We went for dinner on a special occasion and had the degustation tasting menu. The food was quite nice, we especially enjoyed the Grand Fromage and the foie gras; the decor and ambience for dinner was romantic. The only area for improvement we wanted to mention was that there was an apparent difference in the level of service that my friend and I received compared to other tables. We don't know for what reason and can only speculate (perhaps because we were younger than others in the dining room), but the waitress did not seem to give us nearly as much attention, often forgetting certain elements we had requested throughout the course of our meal. Several of the other servers seemed to be quite forgetful and brusque in manner.

This review will be a harsh one even with the 4/5 star rating. But it's harsh because L'Espalier is shooting for a Michelin star. Service is impeccable and they've gotten less suggestive. The servers are respectful, reserved, warm and only visible when they need to be. The food is still lacking Michelin stature. While it's wonderful and most likely as high a caliber as Boston can offer on any given night, it just doesn't cut it for the level it is trying to compete at. That's not to say it isn't wonderful. Atmosphere serene, service good but some how the food just didn't do it for us. We took the 3 course option rather than the 5 course tasting menu, so maybe that was the issue. Foie Gras starter was excellent as was the chocolate souffle dessert, but the rest was rather ordinary. We were given three little amuse bouche before the starters which were a mix of delicious and ordinary, so a taste of things to come. Couldn't recommend it to others.

I love how secret the entrance is. We had the Autumn prix fixe and it was worth it. The rib eye was delicious, but the salmon was lackluster. The birthday surprise was lovely at the end. Definitely worth it for an appropriate special occasion.
