First time going on a weekend, and I think I may stick with weeknights. Very loud and busy; we had reservations but had to wait about 20 minutes for our table. Service was a little slow in the beginning, but it picked up as the night went on; in the past (on weeknights), it's been better. Food was good, although with later dinner reservations (usually anytime after 7, I was told) the specials are always sold out.

Just read Anthony Bourdain's book and was interested in Les Halles. In NYC for a long weekend, I was surprised to see that it was only a few doors down from my Park Avenue hotel. To be fair, I expected the restaurant to be touristy. And to be fair, the food was good -- but it wasn't great. I had expected a special experience after reading Bourdain's philosophies on food and its preparation. And I have been to many great French restaurants in the past. I wouldn't shy away from the experience, but I would set your expectations correctly. It probably didn't help that our server seemed new and inexperienced. Service was definitely sub-par. We were fortunate to get seated before the restaurant got really busy.

It has long been a dream of mine to eat here and it did not let me down. We had the short rib and striped bass specials, both of which were excellent. Do not skip the onion soup or the creme brulee. Our waiter was always there at the right time as well. I will be returning.

It was quite apparent to us that they are no longer concerned with the quality of the dining experience, and are trading solely upon Bourdains name, and their cheif concern being flipping tables.Been there, won't go back, and would reccomend patronizing places that Anthony GOES to, but not owns.

The food was excellent, the drinks high quality and the atmosphere just what you'd expect but our much anticipated meal had the gloss taken off it by the slightly shambolic performance by the waiters. Pre-dinner drinks, bread, wine and first course all arrived within 15 minutes of ordering, far too rushed for a couple who wanted a lovely, leisurely evening in a great restaurant. After that it all settled down and, despite the occasional lapse, we had what we wanted, a top quality meal in a fine restaurant which just needs to train its staff to space things out a bit and pay more attention to detail.

This place used to be known for it's steak tar tar. Not anymore. It was quite bad, despite the fact that it is still made table-side. All the food was too salty and mediocre. The service from the waiter was ok. The bus boys were terrible as they rushed you and didn't care whether you needed something from the bar.

I've been to Les Halles many times and I think that the food is heading downhill. The Escargot was bland and tasteless, the mussels middling, the Onglet was the only dish that harked back to the past. The desserts - the banana flambe and the chocolate torte - were poor. I miss Les Halles as it was... I hope that they can step up your game..

You know how sometimes you go to a really nice restaurant and so much attention is paid to the artful presentation that there isn't much food? Like what elves probably eat? Well, you should bring your appetite to Les Halles. That's not to say it's quantity over quality, But every meal I've had there has been quite wonderfully filling- like the Thanksgiving of your dreams.

Went for a late lunch with a party of 6 on a grey Saturday. We were seated right away but that was about the quickest we got service on that day. A few delays, a minor mishap where one glass was broken later , the waiter took our orders only to return 10 mins later to ask us to repeat it back to him. The food arrived and was pretty good. The steak and fries were good as usual and the mussels were excellent. A brunch order of crepes was pitifully small but tasty.

We were here at 8.30 pm, it was very busy with tourists and office workers. Great ambiance although we found it a little noisey, not because of loud music, just due to chatter and everyone having fun. The food was great, in particular I loved the onion soup. A lovely traditional restaurant, the next time I'm in New York I will visiting again.

We had a 6:30 reservation and were seated promptly; however, it took upwards of 5 minutes before the waiter showed up to ask for drinks. After ordering drinks another 10 or more minutes before our drinks arrived. Several more minutes before the waiter took our orders. After food was served, the waiter did not come by to ask if we wanted more drinks or how our meal was. We had to ask for the check. All this and the restaurant was not very busy - maybe 50-60% occupied.

We were greeted warmly and seated at a wonderful booth. This was great because it was my wife's birthday. The waiter was very professional and answered our questions about some of the menu items. We just arrived from San Francisco and this was our first dining experience in New York. We were blown away! It could not have been any better. The staff we came in contact with were all wonderful and half price wine night was a brilliant surprise. The food was fabulous from start to finish.

Don't go for the service. It was good though difficult to converse with the waiter if sitting in the row of tables along the bank. Don't go for the food ... except for the mousse which is the best I've found in NYC (not saying much in terms of the competition but this one is quite fine). Go for the ambiance. You can't help but have fun.

As a chef staying just a few blocks away, eating at Anthony Bourdains Les Halles is mandatory. Had escargots for starters and chose the cassoulet fot main. Had a nice bottle of light Pinot Noir I was recommended. Served a bit too warm, but after 10 minutes in the ice bucket it was fine. Seems to me red wine is served for the most part room tempered in the US, but I really don't know. The escorts were as they should with plenty of garlic butter. The cassoulet was outstanding and highly recommended to others! Had a bit of wine left and asked for some cheese. I recognized both cheeses served, a soft chevre and a young Manchego. It would have been expected to be presented with what was on the plate. All in all a great dining experience.

I had a very nice dinner here with my mom. The restaurant is great for a relaxing dinner with great tasting food. The steak, frites and salad were delicious! The Malbec was not the best but perhaps one of the French wines would have been a wiser decision. I most certainly will be returning to Les Halles soon!

Anthony Bourdain said that fine dining became less and less about the food in NYC. He made this restaurant affordable, but kept the essence of the French dining experience. It's not Le Cirque, but it's not trying to be. $20-$35 plates of delicious food, great service, and an old nyc vibe. If you're looking for something pretentious, this isn't it. If you're looking for a great meal, at a good price, with a sophisticated crowd, this is your place.

We had booked for five thirty, so didn't expect Les Halles to be hopping so early, but we did expect good service -- especially with so few other dining patrons. Unfortunately, our waiter was so green he looked scared every time we asked a question, then disappeared for long periods. When our bill finally came, he dropped it on the table, and ran. Unfortunately, it was the bill for another table, so we flagged a senior waiter to ask if he could find our waiter. We told him the bill we received was not ours. He looked at it,and agreed with us, but he acted as though he was not only angry at our waiter, but at us as well. He scowled at us as he delivered the correct bill. An otherwise nice dinner spoiled.

Food was great. I had the Coq au Vin and my wife the "famous" steak frites. Both were very good as was the side of green beans I had. The service was attentive and knowledgeable and not afraid to offer an opinion. We also had the foie gras special appy (terrine) and the brie honey appy which were great. All in all flavourful, tasty. A couple of small negatives 1) Because its in the spirit of a French brasserie, the tables were a little small and proximity to other diners a little too close. 2) Noise started ok, but by 830-900 the din was noticeable. Again perhaps thats the expectation at a French brasserie but a tad too much for me 3) Anthony Bourdain..... why oh why have you not done Asian/SE Asian/S Asian food spot??? Come on man! :)

Having read Bourdain and enjoyed his TV work, I've been eyeballing the menu for quite some time. While he no longer cooks here, the menu remains the same: solid bistro fare at not out of this world prices. Apps were great. I had the night's special (foie gras terrine). VERY good. My buddy had the escargot AND the roasted brie. (My initial opinion of this choice was not warranted.) Seriously: try the roasted brie. The tournados rossini my friend had was terrific. My boudin noir was much as I expected. Very, very good. Service was brisk but not too fast. A great spot for a before show meal. Even with two martinis each, it was hard to linger for over an hour and a few minutes. Highly recommended.

We love the authentic brasserie food, which is perfectly prepared, especially steak frites, onion soup, frisee w/ lardon, roast chicken. The "trick" is to be seated either outside or in the very small room to the left of the welcome stand as you walk in. Otherwise, you will not be able to hear yourself think, much less converse.
