Diner Reviews
  • "Arrived early for our reservation, treated like we were an hour late, didn't get served for thirty minutes after seated. All levels of service were unacceptable."

  • "The service was very good, just a little wait for dessert and the wait staff was quick to explain. The food was simple and delicious. The place was a bit dark, and I like enough light to snap a picture.Good place for dining alone."

  • "Loved the coq au vin! And the chocolate sauce froem the cream puffs was to die for!"

  • "Gold Standard American-french bistrot. Charming ambience. Deliciosus Onglet, Steak, Confit, Scargots."

  • "A great name attached to a restaurant doesn't do enough. It was noisy, busy, unprofessional and disappointing. The food was okay but not elegant, was too much and heavy. Good luck."

  • "I have been wanting to try Les Halles for a while. However my frequent trips to NY on business are usually packed. But this time I had the time and was glad I went to Les Halles. Reasonable prices, great selection and really good food. They fries are the bomb. Smart efficient service and a reasonable wine by the glass menu made this a great place to dine in NYC."

  • "Went with family. Father loved the wine list. All food was very good. Our waiter was notably kind, and served us well. Had a uninspiring interaction with the bartender before sitting down. He didn't seem to care at all that we were there. Took forever to get our bill once our table was ready despite asking for it and him acknowledging the request 3 times... it wasn't that busy either. The service was otherwise very good. Food was excellent. Sort of loud but energetic atmosphere."

  • "Les Halles specializes in large steaks carved up for several people, with generous servings of French fries. It also has hearty versions of traditional dishes. Wine list includes relatively reasonable choices. The restaurant feels French, but is a little dark and run down, and the waitstaff seemed tired on a Saturday evening."

  • "Pricy cocktails made without great enthusiasm. Steaks were simply supreme."

  • "The terrine was meh. So cold it had the consistency of something that had either been frozen or in the fridge not too long ago. It was gamey without tasting exciting or special. The French onion soup was "pretty good," but nothing you can't make with canned French onion soup. Steak au poivre was meh. Tough meat and so-so pepper curst. Have had much better in other Manhattan and Brooklyn restos for less money. $35 filet was excellent. Tender. Bearnaise sauce was delicious. Server was okay. He seemed rushed. The touted "award-winning" fries were good. But in this day and age, no longer special. These days, I just think there are so many better options to eat, where the food, even if brasserie style, is prepped with more care."

  • "The food was not bad and our server's upbeat personality made up for the hostess's sour attitude when we simply asked to move three tables over in a completely empty restaurant. The roasted Amish chicken was very fresh and their Kailua coffee was amazing and came with flaming Grand Marnier to pour on the whipped cream."

  • "Food deliciously French, service informed and friendly. Manager noticed our French fries were a bit late to the table and took them off the bill unprompted. Chef serves the French steak/frites combination in classic and new ways. We chose the marinated skirt steak and kale salad -cooked and sauced perfectly. We were early diners on Sunday July 5th after holiday weekend, and it was unusually quiet. Normally this restaurant is hopping with a great brasserie vibe."

  • "This was a fantastic restaurant! We ate breakfast there.. The food was very good and the ambiance was very nice. We could see the restaurant from our hotel and it looked as if the nite life in the bar was just as nice. Not a sloppy place, felt like a mature crowd with yummy food. I would give it a solid 4 out of 5... You can't go wrong."

  • " As a server of 10 years, I was absolutely appalled by the quality of service. The restaurant was nearly empty and bursting with support staff yet my server was rarely available."

  • "For her 21st birthday present my daughter wanted to go to NYC and see a Broadway show. Rather than fight the crowds in the theater district we looked for a nice restaurant near our hotel. Since my daughter is a "foodie" she wanted to try Les Halles as she has seen Boudain's TV show. Reservations were easy for a Saturday night and we were promptly seated. The meals were are delicious and portions were appropriately sized. Desert was "to die for". Service was attentive, but not pushy and the staff were all pleasant and welcoming. Would definitely go back here for a relaxing and enjoyable meal."

  • "Great coq au vin. Halibut was OK - wife gave it a C+. Good sized portions. Restaurant very well managed, excellent service, handled a rush very well."

  • "We looked forward to dining here and were disappointed. The service was inconsistent and there was an additional charge that was not mentioned. It was removed when we requested it, however we had to wait for our check initially and then there was a wait for manager approval. The food quality was very good."

  • "Good food and excellent fries, which justify the award. Tables a bit close together but did not spoil the overall experience."

  • "I love a great french brasserie and this is one. Food is always great, menu is wonderful and very traditional. The table preparation of the steak tartare and the crepes was amazing to watch. Great time and detail goes into the experience. Cocktails great and the scene is more neighborhood the tourist. A great way to spend any meal."

  • "I went here with my business associate for his birthday dinner. Chose it because it was Anthony Bourdain's first main chef position in NY. Food and service were very good as was the wine we had with our 4 course dinner. Will definitely go back."

  • "We took our grand daughter and boy friend for a day in the city -- Of course Les Halles was on our list of great city places to eat at. The day started at Shake Shack in Madison Park and ended in Les Halles to really wrap up a super day. The Cote De Boeuf was perfect and made the night special and the crepes suzette topped off a memorable meal . My grand daughters review to her Dad was so impressive he asked that we take him there on our next visit. Can't go wrong price wise or food wise ."

  • "Best steak in the city and that is saying something. They also have Kronnenburg on tap, which is a treat to find outside of Paris. We enjoyed the attention from the staff and the food is just great."

  • "We were visiting NYC with a list of places we wanted to see and experience; Les Halles was one of them. The service was stellar, the food was fired to perfection (we all had steaks), and my Martini was just how I would have made it myself. Additionally, we had three "pre-teen" girls with us and Les Halles was well more than accommodating and patient. We would definitely come back, your mileage may vary..."

  • "I had such a lovely time when I visited Les Halles, I´m not a great foodie, but they still helped me on every question/suggestion I asked."

  • "We wanted to try a New York Steakhouse and were glad we chose Les Halles. We tried the Steak au Poivre and the Steak Bavette and both were cooked to perfection. Accompanied by excellent chips and green leaves, the steaks were melt in your mouth quality. And to accompany the steaks, we had a bottle of 2010 Clos De La Cure , a Saint-Emillion Grand Cru which was included in the Monday night half price wines list. What a fantastic Bordeaux wine it was and it did go so well with the steaks."

  • "I love Les Halles but on this night our service was so bad. We had to ask for ice bucket to keep wine cold, waiter took our order and then went MIA. I admit this was off night as usually not the case. My friend and I ordered the same thing both steaks were to be cooked medium mine perfect his came out rare...not fun to eat that way."

  • "Really enjoy going to Les Halles with friends. It is a good meal with decent service and the prices, although high enough to make it a special night out for me, are not bad compared to other places of its type. The Monday night half-price wine by the bottle is also good for having a meal with a group. I could stand for the noise level to be dampened down a bit, but it seems to be the architecture that lets the noise get so high."

  • "I love this place. The food is great and the portions are just right, not grotesque, yet you leave feeling really stuffed. The steaks are high quality and I love them. The atmosphere is welcoming, big and cheery and the waiter's recommendations on the wine is spot on. Brunch was delicious. I'd go back again and again."

  • "As ever we had a great dinner here, excellent food, good efficient service and super ambience, only criticism was the eight dollars for a bottle of still water....ouch, waiter did not make this clear, I don't mind paying for sparkling water, however this was pretty steep perhaps we should have been more attentive when ordering"

  • "Given one particular famous chef's notable rise from the kitchen of Les Halles, we hoped we would find the reverberations of those once heady days still in the air and on the plate. What we did find was a competent French brasserie menu with a notable wine list, great, old time ambience and organized service (except the bartenders, who seemed to have better things to do that clear the bar of old glassware or welcome us--the pastisse was nicely presented however, but for that welcoming feeling I'd like to recognize the hostesses.) We also found the food to be passably good over all, except the Duck Confit--it was dry--confit!?! Nevertheless, we're glad we went because now we don't have to go back."

  • "The Steak au Poivre is consistently good and the french fries are excellent. The steak is served with a salad on the side that doesn't work so well because nobody likes hot salad. They should serve it with the string beans instead or have it on a separate plate. They also have a great onion soup. The Poulet Roti was quite good but found the sauce a tad on the salty side. As a French restaurant, I think they should have better bread. If they could improve on these minor flaws, I would give 5/5."

  • "Some choices of offal (innards), though there always could be more. Noise level pretty high; but this is a brasserie: hustle & bustle should be expected. Magnificent flavors out of the best tradition of French cooking"

  • "Met a few friends here the other night for dinner. Interesting decor, feels like an old French restaurant, very spacious and antiquated (in a good way)! (Love the coat/purse hooks at every table!) service was good. He gave us plenty of time to visit and review the menu. We had the grilled salmon, salad nicoise, and steak frites. All were superb! Would definitely recommend and be back soon. Also want to try the downtown location."

  • "Very good restaurant, everything was great: food, wine and service. Tasty food, well prepared in a classical french style. Delicious duck breast and scallops too. Crêpes suzette prepared at the table were perfect. Nice place to eat.Worth the Price."
