Diner Reviews
  • "met old friends who we hadn't seen in a while- were lucky enough to be seated in small section in front, set apart from main dining area, which would have been too noisy to carry on easy conversation. Spent a while talking over drinks, without being pressured at all by waitstaff to move ahead with ordering dinner. (only drawback was when waiters passed thru this section to get to sidewalk seating, got a little blast of cold outside air) wonderful experience as first time diner here"

  • "I had the good luck to be in the city and headed to a concert with a friend during Restaurant Week. Although most restaurants don't offer their Restaurant Week menu on a Saturday night, Les Halles did offer it on the night that we went. The deal was too good to pass up. I started with the pate appetizer. When it arrived, it appeared a bit dry compared to what I'm used to seeing but I was surprised to find the dish succulent and flavorful. The wine notes really came through with each bite. For my entree, I chose the old standard, Steak and Frites. Both were perfectly prepared. The creme brule dessert was equally delicious. I should also mention that we had Les Halles cocktails. Definitely worth a taste."

  • "I ordered the duck confit. It's supposed to be served with truffle potatoes. Instead they substituted that with portobello mushrooms. The waitress Cristina should have informed me that they ran out of truffle potatoes. Had I known in the beginning I would have ordered a different entree."

  • "Came here for dinner - Ordered the ravioli, nothing special. I'm a vegetarian and there wasn't much on the menu for me, which I new beforehand, I just had higher expectations for the one non meat dish on the menu. Service was good though and they have a good selection of wines."

  • "I thoroughly enjoyed the service and the communication from the staff. The food was outstanding; too much that we had to take it home. The taste and the smells were alluring and delicious."

  • "I had visited Les Halles with a friend 2 years prior and it was great then. My friend and I throughly enjoyed ourselves. This time I went alone. I had a great time. The staff were very friendly, the food was great. I had just as much fun alone as I did with company. The food was just as I expected Excellent! If you like French Cuisine and do not want to spend an arm and leg for great food and a great experience, then Go to Les Halles!!"

  • "Besides waiting 20 minutes for table (with a reservation), the waitress was very accommodating to my particular diet requests and was very attentive. The food was delicious, as always. I would highly recommend it for a nice night out."

  • "In my 20+ years in NYC I have witnessed too many local gems closing their doors. There are so few left, the city is losing it's soul. I have eaten here many many times and the food is always really solid. However, they were a little off their game this time. But nothing will keep me from going back..."

  • "Moules frites were served as 2 separate courses. Frites came 15 min. later after our repeated requests .lWorse . We didn't know who our server was. A lady took our order, never came back to us. We asked the server waiting on the next table to ask our waitress to see us. He said he was our waiter. When asked about the "frites" He said "We can't serve everything at once. We have to make another trip"???? A maitre d came by and the waiter seemed to be telling him that there was a problem. The frites were brought a few minutes later. No apologies."

  • "Came to Le Halle Park Avenue from the UK as part of my 40 Birthday trip to NYC. We came to this restaurant on my actual Birthday evening, and the whole experience was magic! Tim our waiter looked after us so well. The food was excellent! I tried Foie Gras for the first time, and it was simply gorgeous. Hubby had the Pigeon, I had had the famous steak Frit, and it was all perfectly cooked and presented. Then the icing on the cake was a personally signed book from Mr Bourdain himself, which had been arranged as a surprise for me by my Husband with the help of Magda and Tim. I cant praise this place enough! Every aspect of the evening was nothing less than perfect."

  • "Went to Les Halles (my third time) for my boyfriend's and my anniversary. We were lucky to snag the back corner table - the most intimate seats in the restaurant with a great view of the dining room (and everyone else's meals). The service was quick and attentive. We started with the pate, and then ordered the tartare and beef tenderloin for our entrees. This is truly a carnivore's paradise. My boyfriend and I are very particular about our steak tartare and Les Halles proved their game with with just the right balance of spice, texture and tang. My tenderloin (ordered medium rare) had the perfect pink interior and was incredibly tender to the bite. Fries were also excellent. Impeccable dining. Looking forward to my next visit."

  • "I've been to Les Halles more than a few times. Fridays are packed, boisterous and always fun. Don't expect a quiet romantic dinner; go there on Tuesday or Wednesday for that. The negroni's were perfect and came minutes after we ordered. Our appetizer (carpaccio) and main courses (hangar steak with frites and choucroute) were brought out perfectly timed. We never felt rushed even though they were really busy. Our waiter Jean M. was informative, attentive, but not hovering. He also suggested a decadent white chocolate mousse/chocolate cake dessert special. Les Halles is perfect- great food, drinks, service and relaxed atmosphere. I'll be back."

  • "The noise level rating above should have been entitled frenetic instead of energetic. It was so loud in the restaurant that diners either gave up and stared at each other or had to scream to be heard. If the management would have simply turned down (or off) the music it would have been such a different dining experience. Basically, the food was good but not worth it."

  • "Excellent food. The restaurant itself is quite large, but there was still an ambience of French brasserie. The servers outfits seemed a little out of place and our server was nice but a bit shy. I enjoyed the music selection, but it became quite loud as the evening wore on and was not at all French - again, it was music that I liked, but also seemed out of place. None of these issues would prevent me from enjoying their delicious food or from recommending it to a friend, though!"

  • "Some of the best French Onion Soup and Steak in town!"

  • "I called to change the reservation time from 8 PM to 5:30 and the had no record of either reservation, but seated us, which we appreciated. The food was just OK, nothing spectacular for such a famous place. French fries were better than the steak. Nice bar and looked like an in place for the young crowd as it really picked up by 8 PM and we were glad we had come early before it got too crazy."

  • "This place had the best meat plate i have ever had in my life. The desert was to die for as well."

  • "My husband has been wanting to eat here so this, trip to the city. We did,all in all, it was a good experience. The food was good. I had the deviled eggs with black truffles, lamb chops and for dessert the creme Brule. My husband had the pate, lamb chops , no dessert. Like in so many NYC restaurants, the tables are small and close together. Nothing stood out - for that kind of money, I will spend it at home in the Lehigh Valley where we have been getting more and more fine restaurants. We are glad we tried it but would never go back."

  • "You would think with all the popularity of Anthony Bourdain that his restaurants would be better. Not only were my eggs benedict fairly cool but they were very bland. I can make a better Hollandaise in a few minutes at home. Seems he needs to spend a little more time over seeing his kitchens than traveling around the globe, that is if he wants them to stay open!"

  • "Just because a restaurant is in NYC, doesn't mean it is any good. I think this place may have been a place to go 15 years ago, but it has rested on its laurels. Compare this to Parc in Philly and you will understand. The food was uninspiring brunch fare. I had the ham and cheese crepe which was decent, but my friends omelette was small and mediocre. Typical bread and side salad. The French press coffee was not good. The service was efficient; the interior had some character the place really needs a remodel."

  • "We went to the restaurant as a part of a night out in Manhattan right after the Broadway show. We were seated right away, service was quick and caring. The food is incredibly delicious! I had Duck breast under pomegranate sauce, my nice jucy and well marinated skirt stake, my sister mouthwatering beef medallion. specially drinks are also to remember. Crème Brule was the best I ever had, even though I had this dessert at Monte Carlo and Parisian restaurants before! I recommend this restaurant to anyone. It is great for the first date, family gathering and just a quiet night out. We will come again!"

  • "I am here with someone from France and we stopped by this establishment for dinner. We had an excellent time and the food was pricey, but very good and therefore worth it. The desserts and coffee were also very delicious. Our server, Eric, was polite, professional, and easy to talk to. It is a highly recommended restaurant!"

  • "This was our first visit ever to Bourdain's Les Halles. We were visiting NYC from Pittsburgh, with tickets for a Broadway show/ matinee; thus we had lunch/brunch.The L'oignon soup gratinee was delicious-- just the right proportions of bread, gruyere and a rich onion "stew" with lots of wine. I got Brie with honey, cracked black pepper, nuts with toasted brioche and my husband got the country house pate which he enjoyed-- again lots of rich flavor! One of our party got flank steak with frites and the remaining three got side orders of frites which we ate down to the very last frites. Delish. Alas, no room for dessert but a glass of ruby port just slid down and was a great finish to a flavorful lunch. Hopefully, we can return soon for dinner."

  • "Sir Chef should sleep with both eyes opened when thinking about the signed detail on this locale. His future may be written as a chef, but certainly not proven by expert eyes and mid level desires of this couple. Sub par on it's, his best outing."

  • "This is a very French brasserie, lovely decor, very typical non-haut cuisine french food. The place is noisy but it's a good noise. The food is good, the ambiance good, the service good. My only gripe would be that the wine is served in small wine glasses; small glasses are fine if you are drinking a bottle but if you are having a $14-17 glass of wine, it needs to be in a big glass where you can see it, swirl it, warm it."

  • "I originally came here for the fries and I return for those truffle enhanced fried delights again and again. The lentil soup was flavourful and a comfort in this "wonderful" winter weather we are having. My companion enjoyed his char creature. The cocktail menu was exciting as always (I am not a wine person - but if you like wine - they have it all!) There was a new dessert I had not previously consumed - COCONUT créme brulée. I love coconuts. I love their créme brulée. WHY HAS THIS NOT BEEN EATEN BEFORE?!? The bread pudding was also tasty (but a bit on the small side - it should be HUGE! HEAPING! Alas). In any case, go here. Why aren't you here now!"

  • "First time visit for Restaurant Week. Lunch menu was quite good. Especially loved the pate, the Char fish and my friend's delicious flatiron steak which she let me taste, and which I'd never eaten before. The service was very good, wait staff very attentive, ambience was what I remembered from Les Halles in Paris so many years ago!"

  • "You can't beat the revolutionary brunch price. The food was very very good. I suggest that you get the truffle french fries as an additional side."

  • "We went for 2014 Restaurant Week dinner and was impressed by the portion of their appetizers and entrees! They had the largest portion compared to other restaurants. We were very full by the end of our dinner. Steaks are tender. CRÈME BRÛLÉE is a must order! Don't recommend Apple Tart... .."

  • "We discovered this restaurant during New York City's Restaurant Week. Loving French bistros, my husband did a little research and came up with Les Halles. We made our way there on a cold winter night and were completely rewarded. Not only did we enjoy a Restaurant Week prix fixe menu, but Mondays are 1/2 price wine nights from a large list of wines. We enjoyed duck pate, Beef Provencal (me) and steak w/ frites (husband) and a yummy bottle of red wine. Dessert: coconut creme brulee and bread pudding. Service was considerate, timely, and helpful. We never felt rushed or forgotten. Thoroughly enjoyed the experience and will definitely be back!"
