A word from Les Halles Downtown
Brasserie Les Halles is the home base of Chef-at-large Anthony Bourdain, author of the best selling Kitchen Confidential (Bloomsbury, May 2000) host of the TV Show, No Reservations. Bourdain is also the co-author of the Brasserie Les Halles Cookbook (Bloomsbury, 2004) with proprietor Philippe Lajaunie.

Bustling and lively, Brasserie Les Halles is a typical Parisian brasserie serving fresh and simple dishes of France’s everyday cuisine.

For centuries, the old market district of Paris, Les Halles, fed people from all walks of life with food stalls, restaurants, brasseries, bistros and cafes, open at all times day and night.

Diner Reviews
  • "Cozy ambiance; good if not extraordinary food; extremely friendly service. Prices have risen so that it's no longer the value it was a few years ago, and it feels crowded and noisy. Still, it's a standout in a neighborhood where most upscale restaurants feel slick and impersonal."

  • "I agree with a lot of the other reviews. Food was really good. Steaks cooked nicely and my wife's salmon was terrific. Nice wine list. We ordered 2 glasses of champagne and some escargot which took at least 10 minutes for champagne even though bar was right behind us and place wasn't overall that busy as a few tables still open. We ordered the rest of our meal a few minutes later which came in a flash (no escargot came) and no time now to order a bottle of wine so after several minutes we grabbed waitress to order 2 glasses of wine which of course took 15 minutes to arrive. It is just too bad as ambiance was nice and so was food but you could tell everyone was having same problems. Really too bad."

  • "Perfect place for good French brasserie food. It can be noisy at times but the quality of the food is great and the desserts wonderful/"

  • "Another NY restaurant that I always try to visit anytime I'm in the city. Outstanding food, great service and fun atmosphere! Breakfast and brunch are amazing!"

  • "We went for brunch. It was a good location to our hotel and could fit a large group. There was no one in the restaurant when we arrived with a party of 10. The service was extremely slow and the MAX amount of tables that seated for the 2 hours we were there was 5! The server kept forgetting things, and had to make many many trips. The brunch menu was VERY small, and we were disapointed in the selection, however the food was good. I wouldnt go here again."

  • "Always reliable in all respects...food, wine and fair pricing."

  • "Good food, good atmosphere, but few people find it, I think, because of construction on the street. Too bad"

  • "Went for a business lunch last week - we both got the trout special which was decently cooked and sauced. Service started out well - order taken promptly and food came pretty quickly. However, I still had half my food left and my napkin was still on my lap too when they started trying to take it away...and this happened 3 times before I was ready for them to do that."

  • "Good service, great food! We had a pleasant evening here and really enjoyed our food. I had the grilled salmon which was superb. My friend had the steak frittes and really enjoyed it."

  • "I didn't enjoy the food here. The shrimp were rubbery and the raw oysters were so-so. The best part of the meal was the bread. I didn't feel like the staff were overly attentive to us either (had to flag the waiter down to order another beer as he walked by without even looking my way). It was around 4pm too so it wasn't that busy."

  • "Very sullen staff, poor customer service. Bread brought to the table, no side plates for this. Starter of green salad, was just thrown on the plate, dressing was awful, far too much vinegar. Main courses were tasty enough. Dessert was a disaster, the waiter brought mine to the table , 5 mins later the head waiter was too busy chatting with the waitress to bother to come to table to make my partners banana flambe, in the meantime my desert was getting cold - when he finally appeared we told him to forget it, his attitude was so nonchalant. I could understand if the restaurant was busy but it was almost empty. We had a better customer experience from lovely staff in an Applebee's restaurant than in Les Halles. Would not recommend at all."

  • "As a fan of Anthony Bourdain I could not visit New York and not visit Les Halles. From the moment I arrived 45 minutes early ("Would you like to be seated now?") until I waddled out the door three hours later my experience was wonderful. The food was well prepared, the service was attentive and the ambience was delightful."

  • "Our wines glasses were dirty, the very young waiter spilled my very expensive wine into my water and the service was rough."

  • "We were party of 6. Everyone's dinner order was delicious. The group ordered hanger steak, duck, salmon and filet mignon. The oysters were very fresh. We always have a good time at this restaurant. I only wished I had seen that Tuesday was mussel night."

  • "Dining experience was excellent. Staff was very informative regarding the menu. Had dinner on a Sunday evening and it was not especially crowded or loud. Very nice décor and the food was excellent and reasonable in price!"

  • "Great meal! Great friendly service. I had a reservation but my guest was running late. The host asked for her name and I waited at the bar. When she arrived, the host escorted her to me at the bar where we had a drink before our dinner. We did not feel pressured to hurry to get to our table despite being a bit late. And the host was very friendly. The food was superb. Cooked perfectly and made with great ingredients. I'll definitely come back."

  • "never disappointed. solid food every time. anthony bourdain claimed les halles has the best fries in nyc. He's being a narcissist for saying so, but he is a justified narcissist. BEST. FRIES. IN. NEW. YORK. CITY. the other food is good too."

  • "We read great online reviews and went to the restaurant. Service sucked; food is hardly French, overall disappointed:("

  • "I used to come to this restaurant regularly for lunch. Have not been to this location in 1 year. Quality of food has really diminished. And the menu has changed. Best to stick to the Park Avenue location."

  • "Experienced diners who have eaten at greasy spoons, Le Cinq in Paris, and everything in between. Arrived with a 7:15 reservation for five, including 3 children, and were hustled to upstairs table where we sat and waited. And waited. And waited. Eventually placed our drink and food orders and were relieved to finally receive the drinks from our sweating waiter. Watched as similar-sized parties around us were seated and SERVED before we even received our appetizers - which were good, but long overdue. (My daughter loved her escargot.) After an hour and a half and watching everyone around us receive their dinners, we walked out and told the manager why. Service was atrocious and entire experience was insulting. "

  • "I have visited Les Halles Downtown at least 20 times, and each time the food, the service, the atmosphere never cease to amaze! If I was not moving to California, I would continue to support this location. Much better than the Park Avenue site, Les Halles Downtown has a hip yet casual atmosphere, the servers are fantastic, and the food bar none. For the price, an excellent restaurant. "

  • "Outstanding food and great service. We greatly enjoyed the mussels with bacon, the steak au poivre, and the duck breast (I didn't want to share!)."
    Dined on 5/25/2014
  • "The French are known for not overlooking food but my steak frites (I asked for medium) was well, well done and rubbery. The sauce with it and frites were wonderful. "

  • "This restaurant was rated high and it was awful. Old dirty and the service was not good. It was so noisy we could not hear ourselves."

  • "I have gone to les Halle's a few times so I decided to go with my boyfriend on Saturday night. When we sat down the waiter asked us how we were and in turn we asked him he proceeded to tell us that he doesn't usually work weekends but because a "waiter was fired" he had to work tonight! I was shocked! I myself am a manager in a restaurant and if one of my staff said that to a customer I would be very disappointed in them. I'm sorry but that's none of my business. So that just started our night,no side plates for bread, we ordered the escargot they were tiny, usually they are big and juicy, our steaks were ok but I've had way better and the way the runner threw it on the table like it was a frisbee! I know these guys are busy but come on!! "

  • "The restaurant is, as always, attractive and enjoyable. The food we had was fine, except for my steak in the steak frites, which was far below their standard."

  • "We really enjoyed our experience at Les Halles Downtown the other evening. The service was excellent, our salmon was prepared to perfection and the sauce devine. Great wine list as well. The only issue is sitting close to the tables next to you, but everyone seems ok with that. A bit noisy but that's New York energy. Very reasonable meal prices, too. All around great experience."

  • "What can I say, I love this place... the Frisée aux Lardons was perfect (with the poached egg) and the duck breast is, as always, fantastic. Service was great and knowledgeable. Ambiance terrific.. "

  • "We met a couple who mentioned their strange server the last time they had been there and we ended up with the same individual. They approached the table at least three times and as if forgetting why quickly hurried away after getting our attention. The bar area on a Friday afternoon is way too crowded and should be avoided but the hostess was great and sat us long before our reservation so that we could have some space. Unfortunately waiting for drinks at the table took a very long time and cocktails were delivered about 5 minutes apart each for both rounds we ordered. Food is always great but for more consistent service and what feels like better run establishment go to the park ave location."

  • "Wife and I dined for lunch, had a nice cocktail and a lovely house wine with a unpretentious lunch. Decently-priced for the area and for the cuisine. There are a lot of options nearby, but many are over-priced and can't match the service here. Unfortunately, it irks me to put money in Bourdain's pocket, but you have to give credit where it is due, and this place deserves credit."

  • "I expected far better from Anthony Bourdaine. The restaurant was FREEZING cold, the food was average, and the service was infrequent. Although the restaurant was not jammed packed with people, the kitchen was slow - although based on the over cooked scallops it may have been, once again, a service issue. Timing was bad. But even our double order of appetizer ravioli special was all stuck together and plated in a bowl rather than nicely spreadout on a plate. They were clumped/stuck together. Considering I spent over $500 for 6 of us, this could have and should have been a very nice meal. It certainly fell WAY WAY WAY short of expectations. I would NEVER go back."

  • "Arrived in a great mood. Left irritated. One of the worst dining experiences I've had in NYC in recent memory. Apps arrived on time but the entrees took over an hour. The excuse was a party of 6 arrived just b4 us and wanted well done steaks. really? that's all it takes to throw Les Halles off it's game? The server then said the food was coming right up,"now". Well "now" turned into an additional 15 minutes. The manager did come by and offer us free salads. We were starving so we said "yes". What arrived were some of the most measly, small, cheap lettuce only salads I've ever seen (or tasted). In the meantime, water glasses are empty & the server is very uncomfortable & continues to make lame excuses. Last time at Les Halles. "

  • "My group and I were running late and the maître d' was so nice and accommodating. He made us feel so welcome and I'd probably go back because of that treatment alone. The food was so delicious. Escargot was perfectly prepared. Service was friendly and the ambience was warm and inviting. "

  • "Given the brand behind this restaurant, I was shocked at the horrible service I received at this restaurant."

  • "There wasn't a patron under 40 and yet the restaurant was so dark you couldn't read the menu and so loud that you couldn't hear a word. The waitstaff was charming, and under 40, but we all had coats on because the AC was cranked up when it was 50 outside. Someone drowned the poor steak in salt but the meal was very reasonably priced for Manhattan @$125, including a so so bottle of burgundy for 2."

  • "I have been to Les Halles multiple times in their different locations. And the experiences just kept getting worse. The waiter mixed up our orders and sent us the wrong plate. Instead of admitting the misunderstanding and think of a way to fulfill the customer, the waiter just gave us the same plate, put a sauce on the side and claimed this IS the plate we ordered. (He put a sauce on the steak frite and said it is a hanger steak). The manager came around to check with every table offered a desert on the house, which the waiter should have done initially. I am just surprised to see the quality of service have come to this level. It used to be one of my favorite french bistro spot. But I guess not anymore."
