Brasserie Les Halles is the home base of Chef-at-large Anthony Bourdain, author of the best selling Kitchen Confidential (Bloomsbury, May 2000) host of the TV Show, No Reservations. Bourdain is also the co-author of the Brasserie Les Halles Cookbook (Bloomsbury, 2004) with proprietor Philippe Lajaunie.

  • "We really enjoyed the food and ambiance of the place. However, we were squeezed in (literally had to move the table to get in - and I am not a big person) ! There was a table of 4 basically three feet all facing us and I sat probably 2 feet from the ladies on the other side. Luckily everyone was nice and having a great time. The waiter was quick and made wonderful suggestions - we did have the escarole which was tasty! My client had the fall off the bone short ribs and I had the bearnaise sauce steak and we were both satisfied."

  • "Went there for a low key business lunch. Ended up waiting 45 minutes for basic priced fixed order, after which server whispered to me that chef had walked out. Food miraculously arrived 5 minutes later, when server told me chef had left "to get married" as if that made delay okay. We paid and left without the dessert. Too bad, because the place has an authentic French ambience and menu that is hard to find in Lower Manhattan."

  • "Overall, the food is good at Les Halles but I wouldn't return for brunch, as the items were fairly plain, and the pancakes were blah (at least they could have topped them with fruit or something to spruce them up). The salmon omelet is just that - a little cheese or onions would give it a little boost. At $18/item, despite a $5 bring being included, adding an extra topping/item or two would move the food from average to the level that Les Halles presents itself to be."

  • "My boyfriend and I had a wonderful experience here on Saturday. The wait staff was extremely attentive and friendly. We sat in the back, and the noise level was fine for us. I wish we had caught the name of our waitress, as she was one of the sweetest we've had in a long time. Always willing to answer our questions and make (great) recommendations. The drinks and food were incredible. He had the steak tartare frites, which was a huge portion for the price! Not to mention it's prepared table side, so you can kind of pick and choose exactly how you want it. You could tell it was high quality meat and so tender. I had the Portuguese mussels, which where absolutely amazing. Best mussels I've had in a long time. Highly recommend this place :)"

  • "Went for restaurant week. Had the duck rillette. My first. It was smooth & delicious. Then the fish and finally the Nutella crime brûlée. Everything was enjoyable. We were seated in the far back of the restaurant which was quiet. The server was attentive but not intruding. An overall wonderful lunch experience. I'll be back."

  • "I don't know if Anthony B. has ever even stepped in this restaurant, but if he has, people need to find someone else to tell them where to eat. Escargot was lukewarm, tasteless, and had the consistency of something that has been cooked a long time ago in a galaxy far far away. My dining companion had the Mussels which looked OK. I had the unfortunate experience of being served the duck breast whose only saving grace was the french fries side I substituted for mashed potatoes. The duck was overcooked, rubbery and so thinly sliced it looked like pastrami waiting for two slices of bread. The sauce accompanying the duck (or trying to hide its taste) had so much flower in it I think I skipped dessert thinking I just ate cake! Never again."

  • "Restaurant week got off to a bad start. With so many restaurants around, the thing to "make you" would be service. Well, th service here def breaks you! The hostess was rude and aloof when she seated the couple next to us and threw the menu to the table, which then flew off onto the ground. She made no attempt to pick it up or apologize. Our server was clueless on the contents of the speciality drinks. When I asked her if one was of a sour bled, she looked and said, well, it has pineapple in it, so it must be pineapple-y. The food was tasty, but the star side order we asked for didn't come until we were almost done with dinner. Our server looked completely disinterested in our needs."

  • "We ate here for brunch on a Sunday morning specifically because they were open for a 9am reservation. The menu is fairly limited for brunch and at least a third of it is various types of pastries including two options for pastry baskets. When we attempted to order pastries at around 9:20 we were told there were none and they would not be available until after 10am. They either need to expand their non pastry menu or not open until 10am. We have eaten at the uptown Les Halles for dinner and it was fine and I am sure this location would probably be good too. However, they need to rethink their brunch situation because as it exists today, it is unacceptable and we will never eat there again."

The service wasn't great, had to wait forever for the check, and there was only one other table in the whole place. Also, I could see staff eating. As I was only in New York for a few days, I felt it was a wasted meal."

  • "I agree with a lot of the other reviews. Food was really good. Steaks cooked nicely and my wife's salmon was terrific. Nice wine list. We ordered 2 glasses of champagne and some escargot which took at least 10 minutes for champagne even though bar was right behind us and place wasn't overall that busy as a few tables still open. We ordered the rest of our meal a few minutes later which came in a flash (no escargot came) and no time now to order a bottle of wine so after several minutes we grabbed waitress to order 2 glasses of wine which of course took 15 minutes to arrive. It is just too bad as ambiance was nice and so was food but you could tell everyone was having same problems. Really too bad."

  • "We went for brunch. It was a good location to our hotel and could fit a large group. There was no one in the restaurant when we arrived with a party of 10. The service was extremely slow and the MAX amount of tables that seated for the 2 hours we were there was 5! The server kept forgetting things, and had to make many many trips. The brunch menu was VERY small, and we were disapointed in the selection, however the food was good. I wouldnt go here again."

  • "Went for a business lunch last week - we both got the trout special which was decently cooked and sauced. Service started out well - order taken promptly and food came pretty quickly. However, I still had half my food left and my napkin was still on my lap too when they started trying to take it away...and this happened 3 times before I was ready for them to do that."

  • "My friend and I had dinner at Les Halles and were very pleased with the whole dining experience. We both had the special Beef bourguignon and were very happy with the meal. The meat was excellent and if they had this special again, I would order it. I had PROFITEROLES for desert and they were wonderful. The service was very good, no problems at all and when we did not like the table they allowed us to change tables. I would recommend this restaurant and would go back there for dinner. My friend loved her meal and ordered a second dinner to take home to her husband that evening!"

  • "I didn't enjoy the food here. The shrimp were rubbery and the raw oysters were so-so. The best part of the meal was the bread. I didn't feel like the staff were overly attentive to us either (had to flag the waiter down to order another beer as he walked by without even looking my way). It was around 4pm too so it wasn't that busy."
