Diner Reviews
  • "I read about this restaurant on trip advisor. I was totally impressed by the pictures and reviews so decided to give it a try. By far the coolest vibe and food we tasted in the city. The owner was charming and also our waiter and that made it even more engaging. Small boutique restaurant with all the French flair one would expect in Montreal. The Food was King from the duck to the fish. Go for it you wont be disappointed."

  • "My first time at this restaurant and it was magnificent – the food was absolutely stunning (I had the chicken heart pate and the duck ravioli). The presentation of the complete dish and the details of each ingredient on it, was perfect. The recommended wine was perfect too. I shouldn’t eat the bread (which was excellent) and leave space for desert. I’ll know better next time (can not wait to bring my wife to this place). Service was professional and very friendly. Just a warning: When you make your reservation, make sure to ask for a table (don't sit at the bar)."

  • "One of the best meals possible anywhere in a cool, hip, casual vibe. Great service and stunning food. All this at a very reasonable price. A must when in town!"

  • "This restaurant is truly outstanding! While it is not pretentious, the wait staff is extremely knowledgable and enthusiastic. As they should be because they serve the very best food in the city. I can not rave about this restaurant enough!"

  • "The food, the service, the mixology--all of it was beyond fabulous and lived up to other reviews. We really thought we scored huge by finding this place online--it was not near where we stayed in downtown Montreal and it was a refreshing departure!! We had the bison tartare, chicken heart pate, braised pork belly, and duck ravioli with mushrooms in a foie gras sauce. Every every bite was a symphony and we had to restrain ourselves from lifting the plate to lick it!! Cocktails were splendid too! Get to this place!!"

  • "Everything on the menu looked good, and what we didn't order, we saw on the tables next to us, looked delicious. All food was excellent. Service was super friendly, all questions answered, good suggestions made as to wine pairing as well. Food was very fresh, ambiance quiet and relaxed."

  • "I sat at the counter, giving me full view of the kitchen area. My food was expertly and artistically prepared. I've traveled the world. This restaurant would rival some of the finest!"

  • "End of story. P.S. If you want a cool summer drink try the Bourbon Shandy."

  • "superior in every way-presentation, melding of ingredients, food that melted into your mouth it was so delicious. All four of us felt the same way- it was an exciting and inspired meal. The service was perfectly timed as well creating a relaxed experience."

  • "Simple, friendly unpretentious honesty in comfortable, congenial surroundings. The optional seated bar set-up allows diners to see their food prepared and interact with the chefs who tried their best to respond. Great fresh ingredients, delicious flavours, varied textures and skillful use of herbs and spices made for an outstanding dining experience. The menu was short while providing a good range of choices - the result? consistently delivered high quality food across the menu. The wine list, displayed on the bistro-style chalk board, was also relatively short but quite varied and the hostess/owner was both knowledgeable and helpful. Overall this was a quality experience delivered by quality people - leaving the diner with a happy glow."

  • "This small "edgy" place is as unpretentious as it gets. A very limited selection on the menu has us hoping what they do offer would be extraordinary, but alas no. The presentation was very nice, but the selection of flavors paired on the plate were discordant. The pork belly (about 3-4 ounces) was delicious but the pickled jalapeño, applesauce and other flavors on the plate did nothing to enhance the dish, instead it took away from it and let us wanting. We don't remember the appetizers because they were not memorable. Finally the wine list on the chalk board told of varietals and year but no vintner or regional information for many of the wines. We were so disappointed we skipped dessert."

  • "A very small (24 seats at tables and 6-8 at the bar that surrounds two sides of the tiny open kitchen) place in a Bohemian neighborhood far enough from the city center that a tourist would really have to do his homework to discover it. The food was incredible -- every plate an artistic creation by the chef that combined multiple flavors into a wonderful whole. Service was perfect -- knowledgeable and attentive without being the least pretentious. A limited but carefully-chosen selection of wines. Prices are very reasonable for what you get. I have eaten in many restaurants in many places but few have been as memorable as this."

  • "This restaurant is a gem for foodies, but do not expect elegant surroundings. The small space houses both the eight or so unclothed tables and the kitchen. The meal began with a gratis dish of an Asian soft roll filled with delectable combinations of meat and vegetables. The caramelized endive salad with it's creamed goat cheese sauce was outstanding and unique. One main dish--the duck ravioli with a foie gras cream sauce was a savory delight. The other--the Korean barbecue duck-- was crispy on the outside and moist on the inside-- prepared in two separate offerings, each a gustatory treat. The floating island desert was the best we've ever had."

  • "Take it from a born and bred Montrealer, this restaurant delivers the kind of sophisticated yet unpretentious dining experience that people coming to Montreal are (or should be) looking for. The starters and mains were creative and full of flavour. Great choice of wines by the glass (try the Sumur). Attentive and friendly staff. The style is casual bistro with the front of the restaurant open to the bustling activity of this old-style working-class neighbourhood. The dessert menu was limited, but the quality still good. Though I no longer live in Montreal, Les Deux Singes is definitely now high on my list of recommended restaurants in my home town."

  • "A big claim but in my humble opinion, it is true!! Absolutely amazing food at a very good price, great service, intimate but casual surroundings. My husband and I have now been there about five times, either alone or in a group of four, and each time I can honestly say it gets better! Highly recommend it."

  • "It was love at first sight: From the minute I walked through the door and saw my name written on the table reserved for me and my friend, I knew that Les Deux Singes de Montarvie was special. The service was outstanding ( friendly, professional and without attitude), the food amazing ( texture, taste, colour, presentation:10 out of 10) and the ambience was mellow and upbeat with an eclectic music selection playing softly in the background. Les Deux Singes de Montarvie is foodie heaven."

  • "This is such a great find. With only seating for about 25, is has that quaint European bistro feeling that could transport you just about anywhere. Food was delicious and spot on, cooked to perfection. A creative mix of flavors and colors and a presentation that would make any chef proud. I loved the open kitchen and especially the small chalk tablets placed on each table with the name of our reservation. Portion size was generous and well worth the extra $$."

  • "the wait staff were very nice and welcomed us warmly. The décor was a rustic and pleasant. The food was remarkable. The flavors were intense vibrant and well combined. The plating was artful and visually attractive. It was one of the best meals we have had in a long time. I hope others go to this restaurant and encourage the chef an owners to continue they're high level of performance."

  • "Les Deux Singes is the most amazing food experience I have ever had. The passion for food, drink and laughter is alive here. The kindest most attentive staff cater to your every need. The food is outrageously good. I never knew food could get that good and I love to eat! The pricing is a steal for the experience you get. Best restaurant on the planet hands down! "

  • "We had a outstanding dinner on Tuesday after Easter. We instantly felt relaxed and very welcome. The lady of Les Deux Singes de Montarvie recommended us a Viognier as aperitif. Viognier is one of my favorites, so that was a good recommendation. We have chosen to order different glasses of wine which match with the courses. The courses we of a very high quality. Sensations of taste, very creative dishes of French cuisine with an asian touch. So, a good atmosphere, outstanding food, fantastic wines and great staff. High recommendation"

  • "Every mouthful was amazing.. the amuse bouche was absolutely delicious. I had the chicken thigh roulade stuffed with mushrooms and leeks in a coconut and lemongrass sauce for my entree and it was absolutely delicious. For my main dish I had the duck ravioli in a cream of foie grais sauce and it was heaven. The service was very good and the open kitchen concept is very cool. Highly recommend - the food here is excellent."

  • "The atmosphere, the food, the short but wonderful wine list, the service, the owner: all of it was great! The food coming out of that small kitchen was just remarkable. I travel all over the world and am not easily impressed but this kitchen rocks. Veal tender like butter, duck ravioli wonderfully rich, both married perfectly with the wines suggested. I would not hesitate to go back or recommend this place to my pickiest of friends."

  • "This resto is right near the top of my most memorable meals ever list, accumulated over 50+ years.Go, before everyone else discovers it and you have to wait forever to get a reservation only to listen to the OMGs of wannabe foodies at the table next to you. Unpretentious, authentic, beautiful and real: Sophisticated, delicious food, charming service, downright cheap wine. OMG OMG, how can I say that? I can't help it!"

  • "It is nice to treat yourself now and again. Les Deux Singes de Montarvie is a little pricey, it's true, but given that, it is well worth it. The food was excellent, the service impeccable and the atmosphere most agreeable. We will no doubt return."

  • "Just a fabulous dining experience. The restaurant is very quaint and seats maybe 25. The menu is not extensive but should be able to find somethig for every taste. I had the Korean BBQ duck and while I usually do not order duck, the flavor and tenderness was so outstanding, I actually got goose bumps when I tasted the thigh, just OUTSTANDING! My honey got a seafood special which was porgy that she hadn't had since her youth and it was cooked and seasoned perfectly. Wine recomendation was perfect, the attentiveness of the owner who waited on us was perfect, the little surprises the chefs sent over was perfect. I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone."

  • "Among the best eating experiences I've had in Montreal. The duck ravioli is a wonder, and the porgy (replacing the Atlantic trio) is about as close to perfect as a deceptively casual fish plate can be -- unpretentious and incredible. We finished things off with the decadent île-flottant (AMAZING meringue!) and cappuccino that's even better than the rightly famous nearby cafés in Mile End. Les Deux Singes is a treasure."

  • "Just a few tables (for 2 mostly) in a motley restaurant where the front windows are 2 mobile garage doors. The young staff was courteous and very professional. The limited wine list is on a chalkboard - not private imports - but good wines. No tablecloth but 2 odd place mats. As for the food: absolutely marvellous! The Chaudrée of Salted Cod was divine and the Veal Chop was so tender it could be cut without a knife. The presentation was sophisticated (with edible flowers). The Fondant au chocolat was also elaborate but definitely for the sweet tooth! Highly recommended for foodies who don't need a glamorous and romantic place."
