A word from Les 400 Coups
A cozy space, a refined and inspired cuisine as well as a stimulating and enriching experience. An appealing restaurant which proposes a seasonal cuisine with a focus on using local ingredients and promoting our local talent: that is the mandate that the 400 Coups were given. With chef Guillaume Cantin and his team in the kitchen, the sweet delicacies of pastry chef Brian Verstraten and a nice bottle or glass of wine proposed by sommelier William Saulnier, eating out has never been so pleasant.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "When you are going out for dinner, you expect to taste food that you can't cook at home. We went at Les 400 Coups Friday night and our expectations were high We like to take the "degustation menu" if available because it shows habitually what the chef is doing at his best. First deception, at Les 400 coups, this menu offers 5 courses but with 2 deserts! Second, in this type of restaurant, we expected 1-2 "mise-en bouche" to start the meal.... Nothing of this type here. For me, this makes a difference between an average and a good restaurant. Food was ok but not exceptional, like we cook it at home, no less no more. Appetized included a maple Jelly..... we still are looking for the maple. In general, this resto is kind of overrated."

  • "I wanted to take some visiting guests out for a very nice meal in a restaurant with ambiance that reflects Old Montreal

  • "It was not my first time at this restaurant, but it's the first time I was disappointed by the food. This time, it was just not a hit!"

  • "Easily one of the best meals ever enjoyed from start to finish. Would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone who enjoys eating finely prepared meals and wonderful service. No rush to eat as in many US establishments. In fact, for the more than two hours we were there only two tables were turned over in the entire restaurant. It is worth the price and taking the time to secure a reservation."

  • "The food was simply sublime and divine. Still reminiscing on the flavors and textures."

  • "The atmosphere is very nice - high ceilings, modern, but intimate. it was not too noisy when we dined, but imagine it could get noisy when full due to the high ceilings. The food was very good but not outstanding. All the flavors were delicate, but nothing wowed either me or my husband. The portions were good. there is a limited menu of 6 main courses; if you don't eat rabbit or duck or suckling pig, your choices are further limited. we had a nice cheese plate, but did not have dessert as nothing caught our eye. A very good, but not great restaurant. Certainly not worth all the hype it gets in Montreal."

  • "I loved everything about this restaurant. What an amazing culinary experience. The waiters were highly attentive and knowledgeable. Great service, amazing food. God how I loved the food! You eat with your eyes! A must!"

  • "The restaurant lost a lot of charm since a few months. The food was not like i knew it before. It seems like it's becomming another tourist's restaurant where you pay more for less, typical of east side old port. I went to 400 coups many times before, but now it's over."

  • "From the very beginning, service was unpretentious and pleasant. Our server was passionate and knowledgeable about the food and the kitchen, but not aggressive or overdoing it in any way: he clearly loved the place, and the food, and wanted to do whatever he could to make it great. We ordered Arctic Char and Mackerel as mains, he recommended a beautiful Morgon, which was perfect. Appetizers were Nova Scotia Trout Sous Vide, seasoned I think with some cinnamon. Exquisite, as was the pâté, larded and gamey. Mains and appetizers all perfectly cooked, beautifully presented. The room is gorgeous, high tinned ceilings, brick, and enormous photos of buildings on some walls. Dark but not underlit. A great evening."

  • "First visit to 400 Coups and I always worry about restaurants that are so hyped - that they may not live up to it! We got lucky and went on a Tuesday night in March when they had a special maple-themed menu only available Tues/Wed, $45 for 3 courses and $25 for drink pairings. Everything was truly top-notch and the drink pairings were all from Quebec - even the wine that we had with the main course, which is probably the first white from Canada I would truly go out of my way to drink again. The service was very efficient…maybe a little too fast bringing the dessert but apart from that everything perfect. Atmosphere is very Old Montreal - ie. there is a charm to it, but it has that commercial edge that most places in Old Montreal have."

  • "Having a special chef create his subtle and delicious menu was truly a treat during Montreal en Lumiere. Each dish was a star--I could not say which we liked best because everything complimented everything else. Wine selection was also excellent and we appreciated that staff took the time to explain the wines and indicate how they enhanced each dish. This is the best meal we have had since Noma last summer (and better for us since there was less quantity so we felt sated but not bloated when it was done. Well done in every way. Now we want to visit Les 400Coups on its own as we had never dined there previously. All in all, a wonderful treat."

  • "Malgré que c'est ouvert depuis 3 ans, c'était une première pour moi. Choix convenable pour le menu du midi. Présentation superbe des assiettes. Beau grand loft avec grande fenestration. Service impeccable. J'y retournerai."

  • "We were celebrating my sister's birthday on a busy Saturday night. The wait staff were extremely helpful and courteous. All food orders were brought out on time, but we did not feel rushed. The wine recommendation was fabulous, and special beers were appreciated. I would recommend this restaurant for anyone looking to treat themselves to a lovely dinner - prepare to spend a bit of money but well worth it."

  • "Je me suis jamais déçue à ce restaurant. Je fais de belles découvertes culinaires et le service est impeccable. Un must à Montréal."

  • "We decided to book at Les 400 coups for Valentine's day. And we decided to try the 5 courses menu with the wine. It was good. But unfortunately more wine than food. Which is not perfect for valentine's. We were really hungry after that. The restaurant is still one of my favourite. But I will not recommend their 5 courses menu. Too much wine not enough food."

  • "Been there for Valentine day. Service was slow for us but a couple that arrived 1 hour later got their deserts at the same moment as us so I guess we were unlucky. The food and presentation is very good but not excellent. The feel and decor of the restaurant is however closer to a bistro in Paris than a $300+ type restaurant. It is not a pretentious restaurant and people are dressed very casual. I would return but I would consider other restaurants first for a special occasion such as Valentine day."

  • "Getting a table to this popular restaurant for a coming week has been impossible, until this week that is. I liked everything about it and would highly recommend it. Use the web site to see if you "should" like it based on menu and pictures. If these look ok to you, then it will assuredly end up being a great experience. Our waiter even offered to change our choice of wine with another bottle if we did not like it. Note that an english menu is also available."

  • "My husband found a beer here that he thought was impossible to find outside of Belgium. Our two appetizers were amazing: onion soup and the paté. Mains were not as impressive, but were still good"

  • "one of the best tasting menus we have had in Montreal in the last few years. Wines were mostly unfamiliar because they were private imports but waiter's recommendations were superb complements for the food Waiter was informed about food and wine, charming and kitchen was accommodating as we had one member in our party who is gluten and lactose intolerant. Compliments to the entire operation."

  • "I'm a 19 year old cook who drove from Toronto to Montreal to spend a few days eating. I am also very interested in wine and I was not disappointed with both the food or the wine. The music was great (for my tastes) and I loved the style of the restaurant."

  • "I wouldn't say the atmosphere is romantic. But, the food was outstanding. We went to 400 Coups for my wife's birthday. We were seated next to the bar (possibly the reason for our ambience issue). Our waiter was friendly, knowledgeable, and attentive. He knew the wine list very well. My wife ordered chicken, and I chose the suckling pig. The chicken was perfectly cooked. The suckling pig was sublime--two pieces of perfectly cooked (yes, a bit pink) breast and belly. With that food preparation and presentation, we can forgive the tables without table clothes."

  • "I'm not really used to fancy restaurants so I'm not able to compare, but 400 coups was amazing. I brought my girlfriend there for her birthday and it was the most delicious meal we both ever had. They have every kind of wine you can think of, great entries and main courses, and the dessert my girlfriend took was the best thing I ever tasted. Even for the price (cost ~200$ for 2 entries, 2 main courses and one dessert + their "cheapest" wine), it was totally worth it. The service was also excellent. A really great place, would and will recommend to everyone."

  • "I eat out A LOT. It is hard to intrigue me with a menu. Here at 400 Coups, I agonized for half an hour over MANY choices of interesting , different delicacies. The combinations were savory, different textures, and new to me. Sea buckthorn, berries from Northern Canada, and other new finds were used to titillate the palate. The server, William, was very knowledgable and really knew the preparations and the wines. We were there early on a friday and the low noise level permitted easy conversations. THis was one of the best meals in my life. I have eaten at Michelin starred places and this is right up there with them. I hope they keep their modern, excited fun vibe as they get more discovered."

  • "We had the tasting menu paired with wines. It was good. Adventurous which is what we were after. The portions were small, which is what you would expect for a tasting but I thought it was more expensive than it needed to be. The presentation of the dishes, particularly the desserts, was amazing."
