  • "Legume has long been our favorite place for celebrating special occasions and they didn't disappoint on this visit. I think it was our best meal there to date! Memorable from start to finish. Please, please keep the cherry brandied chicken livers-we are still talking about them! Our server, Jennifer, was just the best. Efficient, knowledgeable and even gave us a special treat of the pickled radishes to take with us. Just a wonderful experience-thank you!"

  • "We arrived on a dreary rainy night, and from the hostess - to the server, etc - we felt welcome in this lovely space. We told server we wanted to take our time and he spaced our meal impeccably.   • "We eat here quite frequently and have come to know the philosophy behind and appreciate the excellence of the dishes served. The chef, Trevett Hooper, and his staff take great care and pride in serving the best, locally grown organic produce and proteins (with occasional non-local as seasonal situations arise). The food is prepared to really bring out the freshness of the immediate flavors - never over seasoned but well balanced/paired with all items on dish. The excellent staff is very knowledgeable about all dishes and wine/bar lists. They consistently hit their mark and I do recommend them as the restaurant to not miss while in Pittsburgh or East End area."

  • "We eat here often. Probably the best restaurant in Oakland. Our most recent meal was exceptional. Food of great quality. But the service was down right lazy. Beyond difficult to get our waiters attention. Drinks took greater than 20 minutes to arrive, food over an hour and a half. Strangely we had arrived on time at 6:30 when the restaurant was fairly empty. The bar was hopping so maybe that was the problem."

  • "I found Legume though an article in Food and Wine Magazine. The restaurant is very clean and had a great atmosphere. The server was very attentive. The food is delicious! We started our meal with the grass feed beef tartare. It was the best thing we ate all week! The presentation was beautiful, the flavors were so balanced between the egg, beef, and other ingredients. This is a must have if anyone goes to this restaurant. The tuna was so cooked perfectly and served in a broth that complimented the dish nicely. We loved it so much that we took our co workers the next night. Everyone LOVED it! I look forward to going back to this restaurant next time I am in Pittsburgh and have already passed along this place to several friends."

  • "We visit from DC every few months and always look for a top restaurant to make the weekend special. Legume definitely filled the bill. The food was as good as a top restaurant in any international city. We had the tuna, perfectly seared, generous cut; the steak, perfectly cut and beautifully seasoned served sliced: the ravioli, melted in your mouth; and the pork shoulder in a cranberry sauce, best I ever had and that is not my usual choice. If anything was less than perfect it was the desert, they could use a few more choices and a few less fussy choices. Prices were very fair given the exceptional quality. Would definitely return."

  • ""Fresh and local" are one of the hallmarks of this restaurant; This weekend those items seemed to be cherries, radishes, and green onions, as at least one of those items appeared in every dish. The food was competently prepared although the chef and saucier seemed to have two different approaches. I'd prefer a bit more balance to the flavor profiles of the dishes. The pork shoulder was cooked perfectly but the subtle sweetness of the cherry sauce seemed to clash a bit with the smoky/salty pork. The local kielbasa was excellent; fresh and well smoked but didn't work perfectly with the accompanying vegetables. The wine list was competent but pricey. The service was very good and the ambiance genial and fun. Overall, a very enjoyable evening."

  • "Our server, Tate, patiently explained EVERYTHING on the menu. He was knowledgeable and passionate about the food he described. This was our first time at the restaurant, and although I did not recognize many of the dishes on the menu, I noticed the 4 of us completely cleaned our plates. We all tried something different from the menu. It was a great evening. (I remember when the location was "Nino's"....lots of remodeling and updates!!)"

  • "Loved the atmosphere, our waiter was funny, friendly and well versed in all aspects of the menu. The food was wonderful, but the plates were a tad small and it was a little pricey for what was served. $155 before tip for three. One appetizer, three entrees, three salads, one glass of wine, two beers and two deserts. I guess you get what you pay for, but longed for a bigger entree. No complaints on the flavors though. Pickled radishes were weird and wonderful. Salads were fresh and interesting and everyone loved their entrees."

  • "My husband and I chose To dine at Legume because the first time we dined there we enjoyed the local food and the very pleasant service. What we experienced this time was, again, great food but the service was less satisfactory. Our server didn't introduce himself and didn't seem knowledgable as to if items were gluten/dairy free (again, we were comparing our previous visit when the waitress was extremely knowledgable of the menu). I also had lunch there with a group of friends this past week and again, although the food was good, the server did not introduce himself and did not seem familiar with the menu."

Parking a bit of a problem around the city locale of the restaurant - I did not see the sign for Valet Parking at an underground lot across the street and was not told about it when I made the dinner reservation. Friendly efficient staff. Pleasant decor with reasonable noise level. Diverse, creative menu that changes every day. The entrees were superb (we tried the tenderloin and the copper river salmon). The bread was fresh baked and delicious. The desserts were tempting, but we exercised caloric control and skipped them. My only complaint about the food was that the salads were mediocre, at best - and overpriced. Otherwise it was a delightful dining experience"

  • "Some pictures on the wall (barcodes stickers still on) were off-putting and a large and loud party was seated next to us near the end of our entrees, but with food so good, who cares? Order the steak tartare. It is necessary. The strawberry-rhubarb crisp was worth every dollar; the buttermilk panna cotta with espresso meringue and espresso soaked figs was not - it felt too heavy and the flavors didn't blend well. A special shout-out to the waiter, who was sincerely pleasant to talk with."

  • "We love to hop from restaurant to restaurant on Pittsburgh magazine's top list. As 2014 was recently published, we looked to the latest list for inspiration on where to go this past Friday evening. I have been meaning to get to Legume for almost 2 years because I had heard good things. Many of the restaurants we visit from the list have been great and always have a different reason for me to enjoy. My favorite restaurants on the list are the ones where the menu provides unique and memorable dishes and always have a surprise. The more interesting the food , the more I want to return! This meal at Legume falls right into that category! The ingredients are as fresh as advertised....do not wait as long as we did to visit!"

I love the farm to table focus as well as the parking across the street, which in Oakland, is a huge plus. I have been here multiple times, and never been disappointed.   • "The appetizers and entrees we received were well executed. Especially the smoked blue fish pate. The salmon was fresh and well cooked and the chicken was well prepared. Pricing is very reasonable. Two main gripes, only four entrees is quite limited and hard to handle common dietary restrictions. Not having fine quality coffee is inexcusable, at least have an espresso option."

  • "It is unfortunate that when writing this review, the human part of the experience takes away from the overall dining experience. The atmosphere is nice and the overall ambience provides for a nice atmosphere for whatever occasion. The food is amazing, but the service was where we had an issue. It started off great with a knowledgeable and attentive waitress, but this changed around 8:45p when she became very inattentive and forgetful. Not sure what changed at that time, but was unfortunate regardless. The menu is compact, and offers a choice from all groups (meat, chicken or seafood). The menu is created each day with some slight changes, so the options seem limitless."

  • "For no reason that I can fathom, in a half empty restaurant the hostess sat my dinner companion and I right next to a table with a baby. We were barely able to hear each other over the baby's crying, parent's cooing and spoons being thrown. I am not anti-baby but not in a fine dining establishment and especially not right next to me. Hostesses, do everyone a favor and place young children away from people clearly out for a nice meal and conversation. If I want to hear babies screaming, I can do that at home! That said, the food at Legume never disappoints and the wait staff is wonderful."

  • "We went with friends to celebrate our anniversary and it was a fantastic evening! We enjoyed our meal, the service was excellent, we enjoyed the atmosphere, too. I very much appreciated that the staff so readily accommodated our special needs. My husband uses a walker and we asked to be near a rest room for him and they were able to take care of us. That can be a deal breaker for me if a restaurant cannot accommodate my husband. So, Legume' has now been added to our list of faves! Thank you!"

  • "When this restaurant opened in 2007 it was a "neighborhood gem" and when it moved to Oakland in 2011 it become one of the best restaurants in Greater Pittsburgh almost overnight -- certainly fit for foodies and a place for special occasions.. The menu is creative, the food outstanding, the chef always ready to adjust, the staff both pleasant and professional, and the setting elegant and quiet. There is even parking across the street! What more could one want?"
