  • "A hair in my salad that was not mine.... fish was done nicely, but small portion. The presentation was graceful but the placement of the fish over the food accompaniments was almost mix-mashed, making the separate favors hard to taste separately. We sat at a booth-type chair-bench with a table and the back was a hard, glossy varnish wood plywood...very uncomfortable. The other parties with me ordered braised pork ("so-so")and the stuffed ravioli was flavorful but, again, small portion. The waitress was nice and helpful, it was forever to get our check."

  • "We have never had a bad meal at Legume and always look forward to new dishes that we had not experienced before. This time it was the velvety chilled beet soup with pickled cranberries and slices of red and gold beets. What an extraordinary dish! The homemade ravioli filled with creamy ricotta and laced with summer vegetables just melted in your mouth. I think the beautiful vibrant colors of the dish may have shown better if served on a larger plate. Finally, the service is always perfectly laid back, not overbearing and professional. Our server, Jacqueline was excellent as always. She is a gem."

  • "What a nice midweek dinner with an out of town friend. Wonderful atmosphere, super nice and helpful wait staff and great food. I asked the waiter for some recommendations and he immediately gave us some great descriptions of the menu items and some personal insights to several dishes. As we moved up the menu to the starters, his eye lit up and a hint of a drool formed about the fried pickles. It was worth seeing his face in describing just that item. We did order those and they were quite good with a light crisp cornmeal batter and a fresh dill spear under (so now I am drooling a bit again). The chocolate cake is a must to end any meal!"

  • "We had a very nice time as a family. I have been here before with a large group of friends. I love the beef, and we all ended getting that meal. The roasted spring onions were good, but hard to cut and eat, so some were left behind rather than struggle with that issue. I would suggest cutting them into 3rds. The beef was fabulous, but we were all very disappointed in the amount of mashed potatoes and sauce. I felt like you ran out of mashed potatoes and I have to say it really pulls that meal together well. I think I got maybe a tablespoon of potato. What's the story behind the blue ball jar?"

We had chicken with chantarelles which were fresh and plump and tasty and also the tuna which was very well prepared. Dessert was a home made ice cream with fermented black rice that was one of the best desserts I have had in years."

Same great food options, with a slightly less-fancy atmosphere."

  • "For carnivores legumes menu is good and the food well made. For vegans and vegetarians not so much. Frito misto was greasy, veggies did not work well with the batter which fell off and turnips were hard and undercooked. Not all veggies work for Frito Misto. Grilled salad was over dressed with a dressing with a serious bite to it. Turnip side dish was excellent but if you don't eat butter... Dragon tongue beans side dish was good. All veggie dishes I asked about had same list of veggies in them. Desserts were decadent but not for vegans. The Bartender continues to astound with well thought out drinks with random ingredients I suggest. My husband still loves it, but for the price and being mostly a vegan...me--not so much."

Please, please keep the cherry brandied chicken livers-we are still talking about them! Our server, Jennifer, was just the best. The chef, Trevett Hooper, and his staff take great care and pride in serving the best, locally grown organic produce and proteins (with occasional non-local as seasonal situations arise). The food is prepared to really bring out the freshness of the immediate flavors - never over seasoned but well balanced/paired with all items on dish. The excellent staff is very knowledgeable about all dishes and wine/bar lists. They consistently hit their mark and I do recommend them as the restaurant to not miss while in Pittsburgh or East End area."

  • "We eat here often. Probably the best restaurant in Oakland. Our most recent meal was exceptional. Food of great quality. But the service was down right lazy. Beyond difficult to get our waiters attention. Drinks took greater than 20 minutes to arrive, food over an hour and a half. Strangely we had arrived on time at 6:30 when the restaurant was fairly empty. The bar was hopping so maybe that was the problem."

  • "I found Legume though an article in Food and Wine Magazine. The restaurant is very clean and had a great atmosphere. The server was very attentive. The food is delicious! We started our meal with the grass feed beef tartare. It was the best thing we ate all week! The presentation was beautiful, the flavors were so balanced between the egg, beef, and other ingredients. This is a must have if anyone goes to this restaurant. The tuna was so cooked perfectly and served in a broth that complimented the dish nicely. We loved it so much that we took our co workers the next night. Everyone LOVED it! I look forward to going back to this restaurant next time I am in Pittsburgh and have already passed along this place to several friends."

  • "We visit from DC every few months and always look for a top restaurant to make the weekend special. Legume definitely filled the bill. The food was as good as a top restaurant in any international city. We had the tuna, perfectly seared, generous cut; the steak, perfectly cut and beautifully seasoned served sliced: the ravioli, melted in your mouth; and the pork shoulder in a cranberry sauce, best I ever had and that is not my usual choice. If anything was less than perfect it was the desert, they could use a few more choices and a few less fussy choices. Prices were very fair given the exceptional quality. Would definitely return."
