Diner Reviews
  • "I have enjoyed dinner at Legume twice in the past week. Both meals were excellent."
    Dined on 7/7/2014
  • "My husband and I chose To dine at Legume because the first time we dined there we enjoyed the local food and the very pleasant service. What we experienced this time was, again, great food but the service was less satisfactory. Our server didn't introduce himself and didn't seem knowledgable as to if items were gluten/dairy free (again, we were comparing our previous visit when the waitress was extremely knowledgable of the menu). I also had lunch there with a group of friends this past week and again, although the food was good, the server did not introduce himself and did not seem familiar with the menu."

  • "The food was amazing, however, our server was very curt and non-attentive. It seemed we just had bad luck, because the other service staff was very attentive. Overall, it was great food and wine."

  • "Excellent food and drink. And fabulous tabletops crafted locally from reclaimed woods. An all-round pleasure."

  • "We've been there many times and have always been impressed with the food and the service. You can get things at Legume that you won't find anywhere else. I'd like to see a bigger menu, however. There were very few choices for my daughter who is a vegan and was celebrating her 25th birthday."

  • "We had a delightful experience on a busy Saturday night. Everyone enjoyed their meals, and the service was pleasant. Our server could have been slightly more attentive, but overall it was a wonderful evening."

  • "Some pictures on the wall (barcodes stickers still on) were off-putting and a large and loud party was seated next to us near the end of our entrees, but with food so good, who cares? Order the steak tartare. It is necessary. The strawberry-rhubarb crisp was worth every dollar; the buttermilk panna cotta with espresso meringue and espresso soaked figs was not - it felt too heavy and the flavors didn't blend well. A special shout-out to the waiter, who was sincerely pleasant to talk with."

  • "Reservations easy to make despite popularity of restaurant. Parking a bit of a problem around the city locale of the restaurant - I did not see the sign for Valet Parking at an underground lot across the street and was not told about it when I made the dinner reservation. Friendly efficient staff. Pleasant decor with reasonable noise level. Diverse, creative menu that changes every day. The entrees were superb (we tried the tenderloin and the copper river salmon). The bread was fresh baked and delicious. The desserts were tempting, but we exercised caloric control and skipped them. My only complaint about the food was that the salads were mediocre, at best - and overpriced. Otherwise it was a delightful dining experience"

  • "The food is exceptional if inconsistent. Great concepts and combinations but limited range on ingedients. Some dishes underprepared others over cooked. Same is true for wait staff. They really need to learn the basics."

  • "The food was well prepared and the meal had a very clean sense to it. The decor and atmosphere was fresh and intimate."

  • "Wonderful dinner and atmosphere. The service was superb. All staff knew about food preparations and wine selections. which is unlike any other restaurant I've ever been too. Bravo!"

  • "We love to hop from restaurant to restaurant on Pittsburgh magazine's top list. As 2014 was recently published, we looked to the latest list for inspiration on where to go this past Friday evening. I have been meaning to get to Legume for almost 2 years because I had heard good things. Many of the restaurants we visit from the list have been great and always have a different reason for me to enjoy. My favorite restaurants on the list are the ones where the menu provides unique and memorable dishes and always have a surprise. The more interesting the food , the more I want to return! This meal at Legume falls right into that category! The ingredients are as fresh as advertised....do not wait as long as we did to visit!"

  • "Dinner is terrific at Legume, but fewer people know about lunch, which is very good too. Everyone in our party of four was very happy with the food and atmosphere."

  • "Legume is my "go-to" place for so many occasions. The food is consistently good, the service always excellent, and those tallow fries . . . . I love the farm to table focus as well as the parking across the street, which in Oakland, is a huge plus. I have been here multiple times, and never been disappointed. If you haven't tried it, you are missing out."

  • "Menu changes daily, food is excellent, service is also superb."

  • "It is unfortunate that when writing this review, the human part of the experience takes away from the overall dining experience. The atmosphere is nice and the overall ambience provides for a nice atmosphere for whatever occasion. The food is amazing, but the service was where we had an issue. It started off great with a knowledgeable and attentive waitress, but this changed around 8:45p when she became very inattentive and forgetful. Not sure what changed at that time, but was unfortunate regardless. The menu is compact, and offers a choice from all groups (meat, chicken or seafood). The menu is created each day with some slight changes, so the options seem limitless."

  • "The appetizers and entrees we received were well executed. Especially the smoked blue fish pate. The salmon was fresh and well cooked and the chicken was well prepared. Pricing is very reasonable. Two main gripes, only four entrees is quite limited and hard to handle common dietary restrictions. Not having fine quality coffee is inexcusable, at least have an espresso option."

  • "Legume's good was VERY good as was the service. The serving size was just right- not too much and not too little."
    Dined on 6/7/2014
  • "This was our first visit. Ambiance was good. It was plenty busy (a good sign) The menu was shorter than I expected after viewing the website. Fortunately, we all were able to find a good choice and the selections did not disappoint. The food was excellent."

  • "Went with friends who had eaten there before and said it was awesome. I couldn't agree more. Will keep an eye on the menu to see what dishes will make me go again."

  • "For no reason that I can fathom, in a half empty restaurant the hostess sat my dinner companion and I right next to a table with a baby. We were barely able to hear each other over the baby's crying, parent's cooing and spoons being thrown. I am not anti-baby but not in a fine dining establishment and especially not right next to me. Hostesses, do everyone a favor and place young children away from people clearly out for a nice meal and conversation. If I want to hear babies screaming, I can do that at home! That said, the food at Legume never disappoints and the wait staff is wonderful."

  • "Probably late to the party with this, but Legume fills a gap in the Oakland lunch scene with an upscale experience worth the price."

  • "We went with friends to celebrate our anniversary and it was a fantastic evening! We enjoyed our meal, the service was excellent, we enjoyed the atmosphere, too. I very much appreciated that the staff so readily accommodated our special needs. My husband uses a walker and we asked to be near a rest room for him and they were able to take care of us. That can be a deal breaker for me if a restaurant cannot accommodate my husband. So, Legume' has now been added to our list of faves! Thank you!"

  • "When this restaurant opened in 2007 it was a "neighborhood gem" and when it moved to Oakland in 2011 it become one of the best restaurants in Greater Pittsburgh almost overnight -- certainly fit for foodies and a place for special occasions.. The menu is creative, the food outstanding, the chef always ready to adjust, the staff both pleasant and professional, and the setting elegant and quiet. There is even parking across the street! What more could one want?"

  • "Lovely atmosphere. Interesting selection. None of the starters appealed to us. Dessert was delicious!"

  • "Wow We were visiting Pittsburgh and looking for something special. If you have time for just one dinner in town this should be your choice. Every course was savory and prepared from locally sourced ingredients. Our server knew everything about every dish... I could not stump him for an answer even down to where the rustic tables were sourced from."

  • ""Absolutely Wonderful" says it all. The love and dedication from Chef Hooper in providing only the freshest top quality food shows with each dish that comes out of the kitchen. Presentations are simple, but it comes down to freshness, quality and taste. Legume never disappoints. The servers are quietly efficient, reserved, and knowledgable. Cocktails are outstanding. "

  • "I took the suggestions of reviewers and ordered some things that had been praised online. The smoked bluefish pate was incredible. We had cold asparagus soup which was perhaps the best cold creamed soup I've ever had. Even the bread and butter were delicious. The bread was a whole grain sourdough and both the grains and sourness were huge flavors. I had the chicken under a skillet, and it was very good. I never order chicken but this was a winner. A little hard to eat as it was all on the bone, and the plate was smallish. Might be easier on a larger dinner plate. Also had the recommended chocolate truffle cake which was rich, flavorful and light, all at the same time. Wonderful service. This was a perfect meal."

  • "Went to Pittsburgh to see Frank Lloyd Wright's...Falling Water. It was great, but nothing could top it except a fabulous dinner....and for sure Legume was it. From beginning to end it was wonderful. Had the two pate's...smoked bluefish??? Doesn't sound good does it??? But it was delicious. The other pate was awesome too. They served the pate's with butter dipped thin slices of baguette. I think no matter what you get...thumbs up!! For dinner we had their special chicken. The corn was different and was really good. The dandelion salad was so special...something we had never had. Had the cake for dessert....yum..... Better than lots of NYC restaurants...I would definitely go back..love, love, loved it."

  • "The food is reliably great at Legume. It's an excellent place for lunch!"

  • "The food at our last dinner was truly spectacular from the Beef Tartare to the Pate as appetizers. I had the sturgeon with salsa and ramp pesto and hearts of palm. It was beautiful but tasted even better. The care taken to cut all the tiny precision cut pieces for the salsa were a visual and taste treat. I think it was the best of my many fantastic meals at Legume. My wife's Kielbasa and accouterments was her favorite as usual. The desserts also had very special touches. The lemon and ginger pound cake. Our meal was one we reflected on and compared it to those amazing evening when you started and cooked in the small closet. (How did you do that )"

  • "Yummy cocktails to start, then shared the razor clam app (good but compared to the rest of the meal just OK.) We followed with salads, dandelion greens with poached egg and bacon and grilled escarole with dilly beans and pepper beignets. Both were awesome, especially the escarole. Mains were bluefish with rice, turnips and pea shoots and ravioli with a ramp pesto and (more) pea shoots. Dessert was a shared chocolate banana cake with caramel ice cream. While we initially waited about 10 minutes for a server, once that was straightened out the rest of the meal was smooth. Food courses were well paced. We waited a few minutes or so between courses (which we like....not too much food at once.) Usually we make this clear to staff. "

  • "My husband and I love Legume, but recently took family members there for a 7-person celebratory dinner and discovered that the menu was just too weird for them. You have to be adventuresome to eat here. I wish there had been one or two more traditional items on the menu. As it was, I was a little embarrassed that my guests couldn't find anything on the menu that felt "safe." Admittedly, these are timid diners. Also, it was uncomfortably warm in the middle section of the restaurant. Very stuffy. We made our server aware of the problem, but they were not able to do anything about it. After we drank some wine we were even more uncomfortable. Hope the restaurant can fix this problem."

  • "Legume is a gem of a restaurant. Not only is the food terrific and interesting, the service is extraordinary. The dining areas are all beautifully appointed with interesting art and creative iron pieces separating dining areas. The bar area is small and very charming!"

  • "4 of us had the bluefish which is quite distinctive and excellent. Two had chicken which was also v tasty. Chocolate truffle dessert was delicious. I really appreciate how reliably good and interesting their meals are. "

  • "With a menu that changes almost daily you have to go online to see their latest offerings. Even some of our "foodies" were a little put off by their first reading of the menu, but we forged ahead. There was not one thing that was not fabulous! Highly recommend the bluefish pate appetizer or the pozole roja (soup). The salads were all good. Our group had the salmon, the chicken and the beef dishes as our entrees and all were wonderful. Don't be put off by the unusual combinations or unknowns on the menu. The chef knows what he is doing; go with it and you will be pleasantly surprised! Also, the homemade bread was fabulous!"
