A word from Legal Sea Foods - Chestnut Hill
The signature dish at Legal Sea Foods – really fresh fish.

One of our first restaurants and still a popular lure, we are located on Route 9 in the Chestnut Hill Shopping Center. We are still keeping things fresh at our bar, our open dining room and in our take-out counter and Fish Market.

Legal Sea Foods has long proven that a consistent, high quality dining experience never goes out of style. With over 40 varieties of fresh fish and shellfish available throughout the year as well as an award-winning wine list, there’s no doubt why legions of fans have fallen hook, line and sinker.

We’ve received a boatload of accolades including “#1 Best Seafood Restaurant” (USA Today, 2013), “Most Popular Boston Restaurant” (Zagat, 2012/2013), “Best Seafood Restaurant” (Improper Bostonian, 2010), “Best Chowder” (Boston Magazine, 2010) and the honor of serving our legendary New England Clam Chowder at every presidential inauguration since 1981.

Diner Reviews
  • "I ordered a fish platter and I received the wrong fish and I sent it back. The second time, the right fish was received but it was undercooked and looked like Sushi in the middle. I had ordered my fish very well done. I gave up on the fish and ordered a goat cheese salad. The environment at Legals has never been equal to the food prices, but the reliability of the food made Legals my Sunday evening go-to restaurant. After four bad experiences, I give up and after twenty years, will find a new place to go on Sunday."

  • "As always expected, food and wait staff impeccable . As far as management ; horrific . We were asked to be seated in a table for 4 and we were 5 . Went from table to table until we finally settled for something adequate . Celebrating moms 80th birthday and wasn't even acknowledged and they knew she had taken her insulin and needed to eat something ."

  • "hostess is a real b**** power issues. rude to the customers checking in on last two visits. fried food not as hot and tasty as it used to be. healthy choices ( grilled fish, veggies) are good but onion strings, fries usually cold."

  • "I came here knowing that the food would be great. What I didn't expect was extremely poor service. My complaint is simply that we were seated and sat almost 20 minutes before anyone offered us a drink. We picked a bottle of wine and some appetizers which were promptly delivered. Another 20 or 30 minutes passed before a different server came to take our entre order. After we finished our Entre, too much time passed before a third server came by to take our desert order. Finally, 20 minutes after finishing desert, I had to get up from the table to get the server's attention so we could check out. We were left feeling invisible for the entire evening. No complaints about the food which is always good here."

  • "Used to be my favorite restaurant so my family took me their for my birthday on Sunday. It was a big disappointment. Service was way off, food took forever to arrive and portions were small and seafood was not Legal's fresh. No one asked how our meal was so we had no one to tell - except warn you all through this review."

  • "We haven't been to Legal in a few months because of the renovations and poor parking. The ease of getting into the restaurant is great but very disappointed with our dinners. The choice of sides is very limited, and there are absolutely no substitutions. I wanted sauteed bok choy and willing to pay the up-charge, but the request was denied. The fish was okay but not as great as it used to be."

  • "Christian our server was great. Engaging and attentive but not intrusive. He seemed liked he was enjoying himself. Crab cakes were best I've had - mostly crab. The chowder was chock full of clams. Enzo, the host checked in on us. Sometimes that feels forced and is annoying, but not this time. Felt like we were being taken care of."

  • "Been going to this location for years but not recently and things have changed and not for the better. Still enjoy the Burlington and Seaport locations. Food was mediocre and everything and everybody seemed worn out. We were seated for our reservation promptly and service was adequate. Appears to have lots of regular customers so my experience could have been unique. Two booths in our immediate vicinity were leveling complaints just as we sat down. Bang Bang Cauliflower was soggy and heavily laden with sauce (not appealing), upsold to full meal (vs appetizer) of blackened tuna sashimi drove the bill to $80 for 2; 3 appetizers, 1 entre without alcohol. No wasabi with the tuna. Can't imagine scenario where I'd be going here anytime soon."

  • "We arrived early and We had a lovely cocktail at the bar before dinner. We were seated late although we had reservations. Management was apologetic and gracious. Our waitress was very friendly and efficient. Our meal was terrific. Rolls and Salad appetizers entrees and coffee. All excellent We always enjoy the legal Bar in Dedham. The chestnut hill legal adds the extra ambiance for a more romantic fun evening"

  • "Since we made our reservations for dinner at a nice restaurant, not a sports bar, it was disappointing to being seated in the Bar area in front of large TVs. Even more disappointing was the fact that there was ample seating in the restaurant area. I would also add that we were not asked if we wanted to have dinner in front of large TVs. I had to walk around to see if there were seats in the restaurant area and then request a change of seats. Not a good start, but the food & service were very good. I wonder if we rec'd. this treatment because we made our reservations thru OpenTable?"

  • "We were running late to see the ballet downtown and asked the server if he thought we would be able to order, receive, and eat our food in under an hour (there were 3 of us). He was able to get us fed and out the door in about 45 minutes and was so nice about it. And the food was excellent! I'll definitely be back to this location!"

  • "this was great place to see friends that we hadn't seen in ages. We met for lunch and a few started off with your bloody marys and were very pleased. lunches consisted of trout, salads, crabmeat roll, chowder, lots of onion strings and everyone was happy with their food. The service was great and they went out of their way to make sure we had a good table along with every thing we wanted in the way of food."

  • "We ate later (after 8) on a weeknight. There were some empty table but not many. It was Restaurant Week and I had one of the choices: the crabcakes. They had much more visible crab than any I've had elsewhere. The appetizer I chose, a wedge salad, had the wedge of iceberg, blue cheese, some bacon and tomato pieces. Very good. Dessert was a bread pudding also excellent. I also had a pear anjou cocktail. My husband had the grilled monkfish and he chose sides of kale with peanuts and honey and seaweed salad. Legal is always a good choice."

  • "Legal offers the ultimate in freshness & variety of seafood offerings. Their portion sizes were more than generous... the tempura cauliflower was fantastic, but enough to last me a week!"

  • "We have eaten at Legals many times and this was by far the worst. The waitress was unhelpful, slow and rude. Much of the food was inedible. I ordered grilled trout which I have ordered many times before. It was dry, tough and tasteless. We all ordered veggies for side dishes and only the roasted vegetables were edible. All the rest were barely warmed and raw. I like my veggies al dente but I couldn't chew the large chunks of raw broccoli. The staff who delivered the meal were made aware of one diners undercooked spinach and replaced it with some that was barely better. When the waitress asked why we were eating, she proceeded to berate us for not complaining sooner."

  • "Making a reservation makes all the difference, otherwise there's always a long wait. However the food is consistently outstanding. The rolls are the best , though, you have to show restraint to save room for every other great course - salads, fish and dessert all amazing"

  • "This is one of many Legal Seafoods in the Boston and suburban area that specializes in seafood. Their menu is somewhat conservative but the food consistently meets their quality standard no matter which restaurant you go to. Try their raw bar with the many varieties of oysters. Ask the waiter for recommendations. It's not cheap however. The bill for our order of 18 oysters, 3 entres, a glass if wine, a digestive, a coffee and one dessert was $170."

  • "We were in a hurry, but visiting Boston, we really wanted to make a stop here. The service was great, the food arrived quickly, and was very tasty. Would definitely make a point to eat here again. Christian, our server, was top notch. Very friendly, attentive, on top of his game. It was clear I'm not alone in my comments and he was visiting with other patrons that he knew already. We were visiting from Chicago and wanted to eat at Legal Seafood, but were very short of time. I mentioned that to him. Our chowder arrived very quickly, same thing for the salad. Just when we were finishing the soup and salad, the entree we were sharing (which was split for us in the kitchen without asking) arrived. All perfect timing. -"

  • "we've been going here for years, but after this last visit we've decided it's not value for money, the food good but not exceptional and the caesar salad, don't even bother. the service was average, there was a mistake on pricing that was not caught by the computer but rather the guest."

  • "Food and service were excellent. Thought tables were too close for private dining. Would recommend this restaurant to friends and family for special occasions as I thought it was a bit pricey for regular dining."

  • "We went with a group of 6. The food was ok.. nothing to write home about. The waiter was horrible. Missed items that we ordered, never kept the water glasses filled and generally didn't pay that much attention to us. With plenty of restaurants in that area, I have no reason to go back."

  • "Always consistently well prepared and very tasty fish. I did have a steak on this visit and, unlike other times, the quality was good but not up to past standards. I shall stick with fish in the future. This location needs a remodeling to maintain its competitive stance with other new Chestnut Hill restaurants."

  • "We enjoyed this meal out and were not short on service - with two waiters coming to our table until they worked out they were duplicating effort. I was commanded to "Enjoy" twice before even sitting down, but that's just probably just my personal beef... Good selection of beer and good amount of good food."

  • "if you want fish or seafood Legal's is the place to go. I have never had a bad meal there. the kitchen will accommodate special requests and the food comes out promptly. the wait staff are friendly without being overbearing. just be aware that the rolls with butter that they bring out are warm fresh and delicious. It's easy to fill up on these before your main meal arrives. For the quality quantity and ambiance the prices are realistic. If by some chance you still have room after your dinner the desserts are excellent. two thumbs up."
