A word from Legal Sea Foods - Chestnut Hill
The signature dish at Legal Sea Foods – really fresh fish.

One of our first restaurants and still a popular lure, we are located on Route 9 in the Chestnut Hill Shopping Center. We are still keeping things fresh at our bar, our open dining room and in our take-out counter and Fish Market.

Legal Sea Foods has long proven that a consistent, high quality dining experience never goes out of style. With over 40 varieties of fresh fish and shellfish available throughout the year as well as an award-winning wine list, there’s no doubt why legions of fans have fallen hook, line and sinker.

We’ve received a boatload of accolades including “#1 Best Seafood Restaurant” (USA Today, 2013), “Most Popular Boston Restaurant” (Zagat, 2012/2013), “Best Seafood Restaurant” (Improper Bostonian, 2010), “Best Chowder” (Boston Magazine, 2010) and the honor of serving our legendary New England Clam Chowder at every presidential inauguration since 1981.

  • "Very poor service the waiter never showed up for long times. Had to go find him to get the check. Food was average at best. This chain is living on prior reputation. You can do much better elsewhere"

  • "The excellent service and high quality food never fluctuate. It always delights."

  • "Our waiter was great, very attentive and entertaining. He kept coming back to our table to make sure we loved our food, which we did."

  • "Fish always fresh and good. Very consistent, but nothing exciting/creative on menu. Great for large groups, kids and last minute reservation. Service good"

  • "I give the restaurant 5 stars. Had a AMAZING time. Andrew gave us great service and went the extra mile to make sure everything was right. The General Manager Enzo came by and made us felt like we where at home. Thank you Andrew and Enzo you guys are the BEST."

  • "My husband and I enjoyed a great meal at Legal's. The food is always consistently good. The rainbow trout was a large portion and it was delicious. The service was outstanding. Our waiter, Christian was attentive and extremely nice. We really enjoyed him. The manager came to our table and was interested in how we were enjoying our meal. We would definitely recommend Legal's. It is the only restaurant that my husband will order fish."

  • "Our group of four all agreed that our dinners were superb. Two members opted to split both appetizers and entree. The server arranged for the split entree to be plated separately without being asked, a nice touch. All food was fresh and prepared to perfection. The scallops were notable for their freshness, tenderness and flavor. We will certainly return before long!"

  • "I've been to Legal Seafoods all over Boston; I have been to at least five separate locations. The food is always excellent, the service is consistently great, their raw bar offerings are always flavorful and fresh, and even the fried stuff on the menu is something to write home about. A lot of people will balk at the idea of going to a chain. Yeah, ok. Except it's a local chain, and their attention to detail has not changed. The location in Chestnut Hill is just like the others -- outstanding."

  • "We went out for dinner at 7:30pm on Sunday. We got seated right away and there were plenty of empty tables. Our meals were okay, my fish was on par with that of the 99 Restaurant, but twice as expensive. I got Anne's Boston Baked Scrod - very average except the room temperature onion strings that I ordered with it. The grilled seasonal vegetables were tasty. Service was also just okay. We did find the restaurant well appointed and the ambiance pleasing."

  • "Our unimpressive evening began with the two hostesses did not even look up to make eye contact when they greeted us. They then began to just say table numbers to each other after I said I had a reservation ending with one of them finally saying a table number both hostesses could agree on to the woman who seated us. Our waitress was the best part of the experience as she was courteous and professional. Our meals and the quality of them were so-so but not up to what Legals used to be and not worth the price. Half cooked spinach and over cooked rice that had already clearly been sitting in the cooker for a few hours, no thank you."

  • "Took my wife out for her birthday, just the two of us minus the kids...We were enjoying our wine and appetizer, about 1/2 way through the app when the runner pushes our app plates aside and slams our dinner plates on our table. No apologies, just slammed and left...I called our server over and told her what happened.. she had no response, but said she would let the Manager know. When the manager came to our table I asked him if he knew what happened, he said NO. So I explained again what had happened.. He offered to pick up the cost of our appetizer. He did the right thing and I will return because of him."

  • "We eat at Legal because we count on fresh fish that is prepared well with decent service. Not so Saturday. Party of 4 with 7:00 reservation. After ordering appetizers and entrees we waited 1/2 hour for rolls. 1/2 hour after that, 2 of the 4 entrees appeared - no appetizers; no explanation; no excuses. We then waited for the next 2 entrees. Cioppino was cold and tasteless - somebody forgot to put in any spices. My husband's grilled fish looked like it had been taken from a frozen tv dinner and microwaved and put on a plate and tasted about the same. Daughter's grilled tuna special with wasabi potatoes mediocre. Waitress removed non-existent appetizers from bill. bad food and bad service. Something was definitely off at Legal."

  • "I guess event the most dependable have an off night occasionally. Ordered the broiled assorted and after the (very pleasant) server informed me that the fish would be cooked through (how I like it, actually), the tuna arrived raw in the middle. Now I know some folks like tuna cooked this way, but she just went out of her way to inform me that these pieces would be bien cuite. When I informed her of this, she took it right back. The fish they brought back, although cooked through, had a strange textural consistency. A surprisingly poor night at Legal's."

  • "We went there for a midweek lunch, ordering the crabroll and steamed lobster. The lobster was well worth it, very fresh and cooked perfectly. The service was attentive and considerate of our needs. Overall a good value, and a good experience for lunch."

  • "Waited to be seated well after 7. Declined a table for 10 as there were only 5 of us. The manager never came to apologize or offer even the appetizers gratis after we were walked all the way to the back of the restaurant, to the front, and finally to a table for 5 that we waited again to have cleared. The food, however, was very good."

  • "Legal's does great fish. No fuss no muss, just great fish and soups, chowders. We were discussing at dinner that you would have to drive to Maine to find better and fresher fish. It's our go to restaurant with our family of four children!"

  • "In every way, Legal Sea Foods at Chestnut Hill excels: nice location; attractive and spotless decor with lots of natural light; free and shaded parking nearby; skillful management; excellent food choices and amazing consistency in the quality of its offerings; competent waiters who graciously comply with special requests; and reasonable prices. It's become our favorite place to go out to lunch or dinner, and the mix of people who eat there suggests that the restaurant appeals to all ages."

  • "Went to Legal Seafoods in Chestnut Hill location for father's day with 12PM reservations. Seated quickly. Waiter was very good and very attentive to our requests and needs. Food, as usual was very good and fresh. We made special note on how one item was to be cooked and it was done perfectly. We would and have reccomended the restaurant to others."

  • "Food great, waitress great. Problem made reservation and asked for window seat, low light level vision. Just about empty when arrived. Took buy the window seats and brought you to a dark end of restaurant. Explained to hostess light level problem. So asked to sit by a window. It was originally ok, after sitting came back and said those tables where reserved for a party of 16. Moved after complaining since restaurant was empty and usual large party room was empty. Did go to other table and mangers gave me all sorts of apology. They then set the table for 14 not 16. I had a great waitress and good food. Finished my meal told them I would pay full bill not looking for discount. Note when We left the restaurant the table set up was empty."

  • "This is my neighborhood Legal's and we have eaten here from time to time over many years. It's consistently good food, good service, and friendly. One especially good thing about Legal's is that they take food sensitivities seriously, with a gluten free menu that includes warm GF rolls. How wonderful that they can do that. I highly recommend this Legal's in every way!"

  • "Great food and service per usual. I went on a Saturday night with a large party. We had a great time except the table across from us had a bunch of tween girls that would break out into song every few minutes.... it was cute after the first 3 times, however it proved to distract our group and became annoying quite quickly. Although I did not complain it was apparent that the boisterous tween girls were making a spectacle throughout our end of the restaurant. I really wish that the manager would have stepped in to tone them down a bit. Otherwise it was a solid experience."

  • "We were able to make reservations online on a Friday evening and got a quick response by e mail. We were seated and waited on quickly. The grilled fish were fresh with appropriate seasoning. We loved the choice of sides."

  • "This was where my husband wanted to go for his birthday. We could have gone somewhere fancier and more expensive, but he wanted his favorite meal -- spicy fish and chips, with Boston cream pie for dessert. He got his wish, along with a nice quiet corner table and excellent service. I had an excellent martini to go along -- the bar never disappoints. Legal's take on Boston cream pie is the best! "

  • "We done here fairly often and we're usually very happy with the food. My husband's filet and stuffed shrimp are cooked just right, my cioppino was flavorful and brimming with seafood. Our waitress took a while to warm up to us, but usually the service is great."

  • "Took out of town guests to Legal for traditional New England seafood. This is always the best. Enjoyed everything. Loved Anna's schrod. Loved the veggies - grilled asparagus with shaved Parmesan. Fresh mashed potatoes - a meal unto itself. Desert - chocolate pudding cake with chocolate ice cream on the side."

  • "Very surprised, as I dine here fairly frequently, that we waited 30 minutes for drinks to arrive from the bar.(meanwhile we were assured "they're working on it>" When the drinks arrived, they were more like tall lemonades than the whiskey sours we had ordered, specifying a brand of bourbon. There was no bourbon, lots of ice, and a few other unidentifiable ingredients. The waitress offered to take the order to "another bartender." By that time the food was arriving. How come a bartender in this restaurant does not know what a whiskey sour is ? Hope it's a one-time fluke."
