A word from Legal Sea Foods - Charles Square
The signature dish at Legal Sea Foods – really fresh fish. Located in the courtyard of the Charles Hotel, our restaurant evokes the simple style of the original Legal Sea Foods that was in nearby Inman Square, Cambridge. In warmer months our outside patio reels in those who choose the fresh seafood and fresh air combo.

We’ve received a boatload of accolades including “#1 Best Seafood Restaurant” (USA Today, 2013), “Most Popular Boston Restaurant” (Zagat, 2012/2013), “Best Seafood Restaurant” (Improper Bostonian, 2010), “Best Chowder” (Boston Magazine, 2010) and the honor of serving our legendary New England Clam Chowder at every presidential inauguration since 1981.

Diner Reviews
  • "I use Legal in Charles Square rather often. I can count on cordial service and well cooked seafood. I like going there with out of towners and as a place I can count on before the A.R.T."

  • "Outstanding crab cakes--as good as any in Maryland. The side of mushrooms was varied and delicious"

  • "Legal Sea Foods is known to be one of the finest fish restaurants in the country. It is. Or, I should say, they are, since there are several. I ate at the one in Harvard Square, Cambridge, Mass. Great food, service. Quite. Relaxing. A fine meal! I will eat there again, soon, I hope."

  • "I've gone to Legal Seafoods for decades. In the past few years, the few times I have gone, I said I would never go back. This time I went because I received a gift certificate. I will never go again, even if I get a gift certificate. I will give it to someone else."

  • "Excellent service and food! One member of our party had a peanut allergy, to which the wait staff and chefs were extremely attentive. Food was delicious as always!"

  • "Love Legal Seafoods and this location doesn't get too crowded and always serves up delicious meals just like other locations!"

  • "In Boston one hardly needs to review Legal, since everybody knows it and just about everybody loves it. It is what it is, which is darned good for basic seafood."
    Dined on 3/28/2014
  • "Legal Seafoods has a well-deserved reputation for the freshest seafood. Always well-prepared food and always friendly, competent staff. Oysters Legal and a cup of clam chowder...Yum! We love on Cape Cod, but will drive to Cambridge for those treats."
    Dined on 3/23/2014
  • "The food was great, the waiters were all very nice, helpful, and cheerful. We had a party of 10 and yet the table was very comfortable and we were able to have great conversations."

  • "We have been to many Legal restaurants over the years, and this one at the Charles Hotel in Cambridge is one of our favorites. However every now and then we are unpleasantly suprised with its inconsistent service, mostly at the waiting staff level but also at the food quality. So if you are coming with family or "regular" friends, it's a good place, but if you have a special guest, chose another Legal or different restaurant altogether."

  • "Legal Seafood is a trustworthy place to get good, well-prepared seafood, tasty accompaniments, enjoyable experience. The Legal Seafood in Harvard Square has a nicer, somewhat quieter and more pleasant atmosphere than some of their other locations. I was there with friends who don't eat gluten and Legal Seafood has a nice gluten-free menu."

  • "Went with 2 friends, one of whom was celebrating a birthday. Had a terrific lunch. Cosmopolitans and legal sangria were perfect. Crabcakes are the best anywhere, no breadcrumbs, all meat. Roasted root vegetables and seaweed salad were great. Ordered a key lime pie to share which was delicious and accompanied by the best happy birthday serenade I've heard in a long time! Waitress was wonderful; I wish I could remember her name. Always fresh delicious seafood!"

  • "Another excellent seafood dinner at Legal's. Everything we ordered was delicious - fried calamari, grilled shrimp, grilled scallops and caesar salad."

  • "Great food and friendly service, punctuated by a serious commitment to providing a safe and delicious dining environment for individuals with food allergies. This is a family favorite, in part because our daughter - who has multiple food allergies - has been so easily accommodated by attentive staff. Thank you, Legal Sea Foods!"

  • "I don't remember if I've ever had Brunch at Legal Sea Foods, but I've eaten other meals too many times to mention and it is generally reliable but I find it somewhat boring. it is what it is. But Brunch was quite good at Charles Square. I had poached eggs on crab toast with a marvelous hash of sweet potatoes and chorizo sausage. One of the others in our party had the American eggs, a well cooked eggs, toast, hashbrowns and toast. The third decided to eat appetizers off the regular menu and was very happy. Popovers however seemed reheated, flat, and tough to chew. However it was a much better experience than weekday lunch or dinner."

  • "Legal Seafood is always a very safe choice for dining, with lots of excellent options, where you can be assured food will always be fresh. The Duxbury oysters, which I was told the restaurant had bought the entire harvest, were especially delicious. The boiled lobster, however was a bit chewy for my taste, though very flavorful and fresh. probably just the tie of year & molting cycle. The brussel sprouts were cooked just right, in a very light olive oil based sauce. Dessert was excellent, sorbets, topped with pomegranate and chopped pear, that was scrumptious. And the lovely little almond cookies were paper thin and buttery. The waiter was very knowledgeable about wines and made great recommendations for well-priced sparkling French white."

  • "My friend and I are not always easy to please, as she is an accomplished cook/cooking teacher who is quite particular, and I am on a super low-cholesterol diet of veggies and fish. The grilled rainbow trout was perfectly prepared; I loved the fresh cholesterol-free vegetable sides while my friend loved that her Brussels sprouts were sautéed in butter (plenty of it). Like many other reviewers, we thoroughly enjoyed the rolls hot from the oven. A (to my eyes) huge appetizer of baked clams was pronounced delicious by my friend, as well as a dessert of ice cream bonbons. We ate there partly because we would be nearby; we definitely will return to Legal."

  • "Food at Legal is always good, but the service was particularly slow here. We waited an hour for appetizers, and then our meals came out before we'd had a chance to touch our salads. They claimed this was because some of our party had food allergies, but I have never had an issue at any other legal seafoods. I'll stick with the one at Kendall."

  • "We were a large party (15), mixed adult and children. It was a 75th birthday celebration, we had a reservation. Nonetheless we were split up into two tables--awkward and VERY sad for a family gathering. Service was spotty although wait-staff was pleasant. Food was good, NOT great. Children's menu was a bit limited. For the quality it seemed overpriced. Overall, not a terrible experience but something of a disappointment."

  • "It's not often that one has a server who can mind-read-- but that's the luck we had last night at Legal's. Just the perfect amount of attention without being overbearing... water refilled just when needed, the perfect amount of time to peruse the menu but not too much. It was a team effort all the way around...from the front desk to the bus boys. We all know how excellent Legal's is when it comes to their food... the service just made the evening that much better! Congratulations"

  • "asked for rare salmon and it was overcooked and dry greens were soggy"

  • "Even our picky eater was happy with the food and asked when we could go back. Sunday brunch offers the regular Legal Seafood lunch menu plus a limited, but excellent, brunch menu."

  • "Excellent service, excellent food that would appeal to any age. Great atmosphere and even though it was very busy, it is not loud which makes the dining experience extremely enjoyable! Our waitress was so friendly, enthusiastic, and knowledgeable about each dish. We are looking forward to our next visit to Boston and this will be our first stop."

  • "I've eaten several times here and the meals are variable. Often the fish does not taste fresh and the preparation is not as good. I find inconsistency amongst the Legals elsewhere."

  • "Whenever we return to Boston, the hunt for clams and lobster is on. We never tire of Legal Seafoods fried Ipswich clams and lobster rolls. A solid standard by which we measure our trip!"

  • "$17.00 to park is ridiculous for lunch and will prohibit us from coming back but the food is always good at Legal."

  • "Service was great but the food was not as good as I remembered it. Nutty salmon was overpowered with lemon and the pudding cake was served to us cold"

  • "We know what to expect at Legal Seafood, and were not disappointed. Well, except that the jasmine rice with shrimp meal that I ordered was not as good as I remembered it from times before-a bit too dry. The three others in our party were happy with their: tuna burger (from the lunch menu but made available for dinner); shrimp cocktail and oyster appetizers; Caesar salad and sole. Our server was excellent in every way."

  • "Legal Seafood has a promotion at the holidays - purchase $200 worth of gift certificates and you are rewarded with a coupon for a lobster entree free between January and March. My husband and I now make it a tradition to buy $400 in Legal Seafood gift certificates and have our special 'free" lunch after the holidays are over, as our reward for holiday survival."

  • "We had a wonderful dinner and especially loved the salt & pepper smelts special on 1/23. The crab cakes are so full of crab at Legal that you can hardly eat the 2 on the dinner plate. We have been going to Legal since their days in Inman Square and the seafood continues to be the best in Boston!!"

  • "I went here with 5 friends to have wine flights and delicious appetizers. Nothing is better than a white wine flight and some fried calamari. Our waiter put up with us ordering all kinds of silly combinations of things - including someone ending with a port flight, and others ordering multiple appetizers for dinner because they are so good. He also split the bill for each of us which is so very appreciated. I would go here anytime for a fun start to the evening."

  • "Three of us had the surf and turf. The filet was poor quality, the lobster was served without shell and it was watery. This was an expensive item...44$ and not worth 10$! The service was pretty poor, they had no martini glasses left so after 10 minutes of waiting for our drinks they asked if it was okay to put the drinks in another type of glass, then my cosmo was served in a warm glass. This was New Year's Eve so it was especially disappointing."

  • "Very good dishes overall, and a fine beer suggested by the extremely helpful waiter. The salt level was a little high, but butter + salt equals yummy---but chefs can't resist adding it liberally. The main down side to the visit was the rather intrusive jazz that was playing a little too loudly from the ceiling loudspeaker. I found it distracting, and annoying, especially after just having heard a concert that I wanted to keep in my head. LSF should decide whether it wants to be a bar with lively music or a soothing place to eat: keeping the two separate would be very nice."

  • "We were 9, including a six-week old baby. Service was sterling. Food fresh and well cooked. The servers were helpful and well-informed. We felt treated well and fed well. An exemplary experience. Not always so, but definitely that night. Thanks/ I would like recommendations for what is locally caught at a specific season."
