A word from Legal Sea Foods - 7th Street
The signature dish at Legal Sea Foods – really fresh fish.
Legal Sea Foods has long proven that a consistent, high quality dining experience never goes out of style. With over 40 varieties of fresh fish and shellfish available throughout the year as well as an award-winning wine list, there’s no doubt why legions of fans have fallen hook, line and sinker. A bipartisan favorite, we have occupied the nation’s capital since 1995, anchored across from the Verizon Center and around the corner from the International Spy Museum, National Portrait Gallery and Chinatown.

Make waves at our racetrack-shaped bar or sup on seafood underneath the hull-like ceiling in our restaurant’s main dining room. Either way, be presidential and order a cup of our New England Clam Chowder; it’s been served at every Inauguration since 1981. Other accolades include being named “#1 Best Seafood Restaurant” in a nationwide poll by USA Today (2013).

  • NOT LEGAL!

The 3 meals were not up to Legal Seafood Standards. Two meals "Chef's Choice Grilled Seafood " $28 ea were tasteless and seemed more like steamed than grilled . The plating must have been done by the bus person. The other meal Spicy Fish and chips was as if it was being kept warm in an oven somewhere soggy breading not crisp fish or chips. The waitress was less than interested in providing above average service. This was at 7:30 on a Friday night. Lots of empty tables there was no need for a reservation. Upon leaving the Mgr? and Hostess did not even look up and thank us as we passed them going out the door right next to them. I previously lived in Boston and always enjoyed Legal Seafood this wasn't it. Would not return or recommend!!

My client opted for the signature crab cake which she says she always gets because it ti delicious. I had the rainbow trout. It was done to perfection. I also had the white rice which was really tasty and coleslaw. The menu is loaded with healthy options!

Limited ordinary menu. I expected better from a seafood restaurant. I had a seafood casserole that was overdone and dry. There were no premium fish species on the menu. Things like tilapia, catfish, tuna and salmon belong on the menu at a TGI Fridays. For a similar price and nearby neighborhood McCormick & Schmick at 9th St NW is a better atmosphere, better selection and better quality.

My wife and I felt that because we walk in with open table reservation we were treated like tourist. Plenty of available tables but yet was seated by the kitchen. When ask to be moved we were denied. It was so obvious that the good tables were being reserve for the locals. The temperature was 85 F at a minimum. Noise level threw the roof. Next time I dine while out of town at a so called high end restaurant I will call and make the reservations and not use Open table.

We had a great meal but the hostess tried to put us at the worst table in the empty restaurant and we had to follow her around the restaurant and back to her desk before she would put us at a better table. A person who we believe was the manager asked us about our meal without introduction or name tag. If it was the manager some social training or name tag would be helpful. The food was fantastic as usual and we had a great waitress.

It was my birthday and I wanted to splurge so I ordered the 2.5 lb. lobster and asked them to take it out of the shell. It arrived with a large head on the plate that looked to be quite large and a nice dish of lobster meat. I thought the tails seemed a bit small and after 2 pieces I found 10 claws below. I showed the waiter and he immediately brought the manager over. The manager apologized and said he would bring me a new lobster. He returned with the same plate and explained that the chef was trying to give me extra meat, but he understood and offered to reduce the price to the 1.75 price. I accepted and ate the remaining claw meat. I love lobster and the tail meat is my preference. If the didn't have the 2.5 lb they should have told me

Having eaten at many Legal Seafood places in Boston over the years, and this one several years ago, I was disappointed. The service was OK but the food quality was, at best, average. Maybe an off night, but not up to Legal's standards. At this price point I think DC has more to offer.

I was hankering for some seafood and was going to a show at Verizon Center so chose Legal Seafood. Wrong. The only thing that was worth the $60+ was the wine. No bread served with the meal although others were getting bread. Had the seafood casserole. Tough lobster, smothered in garlic so you couldn't taste anything else. The broccoli with cheese sauce was so tough I couldn't cut it with a knife (I understand veggies al dente but this would have been better served with dip as raw). The chocolate mousse parfait was grainy and bitter. Ordered a second glass of wine (figured they couldn't mess that up) and had to wait as my order "was delivered to the wrong table." All in all an awful experience. Won't go there again.

Dined here with out-of-town family. The Montauk calamari trio was fried to perfection w/ wonderful contrast of flavors. Accommodated us w/ both steamed and fried Shrimp Wontons, which were inhaled. Warm Spinach and Feta dip was creamy, delicious w/ plenty of soft pita; it's a large appetizer. The MD cream of crab soup was velvety, but the menu called it a bowl and we received a cup. The Wood grilled assortment is for a true fish lover w/ sizeable portions. The Seafood Casserole they cheerfully accepted as a return - seems someone spilled salt into it. Our waiter - engaging, knowledgeable, and absolutely perfect service until it came time for coffee. Brought with dessert, an issue for those not having dessert. Overall, a lovely evening.

My daughter and one of my best gf's since middle school treated me to dinner at Legal Sea Foods in DC for my 50th birthday and I thoroughly enjoyed it! From Phan, our waitress, to the perfectly grilled asparagus and roasted shrooms, the entire experience was a blast. Although we had a reservation, for some reason I just knew it was going to be a very long wait but it wasn't! We got seated right away and Phan, who was just a delightful delight with her witty sense of humor, came over to take care of our drink and menu orders right away AND she kept checking on us until the end. I would recommend Legal to all

Portions were plentiful but salmon burger and spicy fish & chips lacked any real flavor. I had tried a shrimp gazpacho sample at the Penn Quarter Farmers Market a few days prior and it was delicious however the soup offered with the lunch special did not include shrimp, thus disappointed there as well. Our waitress was pleasant but slow to come to table for refills and restaurant was not busy. Overall disappointed after enjoying the sample at the Market and hearing such good reviews from friends.

Legal seafoods is always my first choice for seafood in Washington, D.C. Love the dinner rolls, clam chowder, and fried entrees. For dessert I always gave coffee ice cream. The hostesses are excellent. They seem to recognize me even though I come through once or twice a year. The wait staff is in serious decline. I ate at legal seafoods 8/6, 8/10, and 8/12. The server on 8/6 was slow. She appeared not to understand English. Messed up order, and was not friendly. 8/10 server was fine. 8/12, the server did not care. He was slow, not attentive, and poorly trained. He messed up order. His attitude was flippant when corrected. Legal seafoods used to have great, responsive servers. This was part of the joy of eating there.

Usually I have a good experience here but this last time my son and I received very small portions and service was slow. The thing that really made me angry was when I ordered a second drink and didn't receive it. After waiting 10 to 15 minutes for the waitress to return she kept making excuses and tried to tell me I never ordered a 2nd drink. Normally I would shrug it off but the blatant lying and the way she was saying it makes me not want to go there again and I have been a regular customer there. Even with the bad service and being called a liar I still gave her a 20% tip. Also the calamari portion was half as much as I usually get. I ordered 4 servings so you would think they wouldn't skimp on the portion size.
