A word from Legal Sea Foods - 7th Street
The signature dish at Legal Sea Foods – really fresh fish.
Legal Sea Foods has long proven that a consistent, high quality dining experience never goes out of style. With over 40 varieties of fresh fish and shellfish available throughout the year as well as an award-winning wine list, there’s no doubt why legions of fans have fallen hook, line and sinker. A bipartisan favorite, we have occupied the nation’s capital since 1995, anchored across from the Verizon Center and around the corner from the International Spy Museum, National Portrait Gallery and Chinatown.

Make waves at our racetrack-shaped bar or sup on seafood underneath the hull-like ceiling in our restaurant’s main dining room. Either way, be presidential and order a cup of our New England Clam Chowder; it’s been served at every Inauguration since 1981. Other accolades include being named “#1 Best Seafood Restaurant” in a nationwide poll by USA Today (2013).

  • "Living on the west coast, I am not near a legal seafood. So, whenever I find myself near one, I have to go. This location did not disappoint. Food was fresh and flavorful. Service was fast, but I did bit feel rushed. "

  • "Went on a Friday night, with little notice. Service was excellent and the food was very good, but nothing over the top. Maybe better than I expected. This is a very reliable place. My Mom loved it. We found a great bottle of wine at an inexpensive price. Overall, a very nice evening."

  • "We booked the restaurant because it was geographically very close by and we were interested in having some great fish. I thought the fish offerings were on the scanty side. I had the ciopino and found it be quite nice. The lobster featured in the description was paltry and a bit overdone, but the rest was fine as was the broth. It is not fine dining, was better than adequate and the fresh oyster offerings were nice. Our waitress was lovely and attentive."

  • "We moved to the DC area only two years ago after 50 years in New England. We are not fried food fanciers, and when we want fish we want just fish broiled, boiled or baked. Even in DC this place really knows how to prepare fish. If the fried food is as good as they do fish, it will be top rate, too. True to their motto, you will not find anything you want every day. I was prepared for halibut when we went in last. Alas, no fresh halibut to be had. I ordered tuna and described in some detail how I wanted it prepared. It was, as usual, done better than I do myself at home. Also ask for special sides of the day. This day they had creamed spinach that was not soggy and not cooked in a metal pan. No frills, no gimmicks, just well prepared fish."

  • "The food was delicious and fresh. The crab cake was very meaty with little filler. The server was gracious and very attentive. All the employees were very friendly and greeted you coming and going. Thank you for bring back good customer service. It is worth paying the price. The things I look for in a restaurant is good food, price, service , and good atmosphere."

  • "Perhaps they were short staffed but we waited a long time for everything. When we tried to help ourselves to a spoon we had requested and had waited for we got yelled at."

  • "I like Legal, don't get me wrong, but it's not as good as I thought. I go there before Caps games because it has a kid-friendly menu. So here's why my opinion has changed. I live in Loudoun County and frequent Ford's. I order similar things there, Fried Clams. I am used to big plump and tasty clams that I get at Ford's and when I had them this weekend at Legal, they were not that good, over fried, and didn't taste as fresh and as high quality to what I have come to expect. Even simple things like cole slaw, fries, and tartar sauce are average. The cole slaw is on par with KFC's. Their fries are generic. Their tartar sauce is boring. Their clam chowder is always good. Their oyster selection is ok (prefer more of a west coast selection)."

  • "The food is excellent whether you are gluten free or not. My husband's crab cakes were exceptional. I'm gluten free and never can have standard fish and chips unless I'm at Legal Seafoods. So we have lunch or dinner each time we visit DC. If you are going for dinner, a reservation is imperative."

  • "First time there. saw all the advertisements on tv so, decided to check it out after the Caps game. Had reservation and was seated promptly. The waiter acting like he was doing us a favor by serving us, came by 2 times during the whole meal. Food was delicious. oysters on the half shell and the entrees."

  • "I have lunch three times a year with 2 great friends. This is one of our favorite places to dine. The food, service and ambience is always top notch. Our server was personable and attentive. Great meal!"

  • "My group and I were on a break from practicing for a half time performance across the street. The reservation that I made for Legal Seafood was honored and we were seated within seconds of arriving at the restaurant. The waiter was outstanding! very patient, got all 6 of our orders correct, kept our water glasses full and was very pleasant. I would re-visit this restaurant in a heartbeat and will do so the next time I / we are in D.C."

  • "There was confusion on who would be taking care of our table, so we sat for a few minutes with no one approaching our table. Many appologies were offered when staff finally realized we were still waiting for someone to come to our table. Our dinners were just okay, not great. One of us had the lobster bake, and the corn on the cob had no flavor at all. The clams were very dry and lacked flavor. The lobster had an odd texture. The combo of crabcake, shrimp and scallops was barley warm. Since we had waited at the beginning, I didn't want to send food back to be warmed. There was also confusion with the order, and I ended up with two cups of clam chowder. We weren't charged for the second, but it was a waste of food."

  • "I've been going to Legals for years, ever since I lived in Boston. Originally I wasn't sure about going to a Legals outside of Boston, but the quality and service in DC is as good if not better than up there. Try the crab cakes or lobster roll!"

  • "Have been here many times. The Cioppino is the best I've had anywhere this side of San Diego, CA. Service can be hit or miss sometimes. Our waiter the other night had dollar signs in his eyes and rushed us through our meal. Prices are reasonable for the area and the restaurant is easy to get to - Chinatown Metro is across the street."

  • "Lobster was okay. Sides were not very good. This restaurant is nowhere close to as good as the Legal Harborside in Boston which we loved."

  • "food was ok nothing outstanding. The service was second rate. The server put in the wrong order for my dining companion, she graciously accepted the dinner but on the bill the server charged her for the higher priced wrong dinner. next time for seafood I would try McCormick's and Schmidts"

  • "My son wanted lobster for his birthday dinner, so I thought Legal Seafoods would be a happy medium between the Capital Grille and Red Lobster. The restaurant was crowded. We had to wait 15 minutes to be seated. Our table was positioned such that I kept getting jostled by servers moving past. The noise level was very high - the decor is all hard surfaces, nothing to absorb or dampen the sound of hundreds of people at table. The air conditioning was running, intermittently hitting those of us on one side of our table with a stream of cold air. The lighting was uneven and inadequate. Our waiter was fine -- he forgot a couple things, but corrected them after reminders. Most importantly, the lobster was overcooked."

  • "Very good! It was a very busy Friday night and we had reservations for 6:00 pm - we were seated about 6:20 which was very very good considering how busy they were. Food and service was very good - would highly recommend ! I would recommend to others especially if they like Seafood"

  • "Legal's is located right across the street from the Verizon Center in Washington D.C. This makes it perfect for a dinner before your event. The seafood is excellent. The service is excellent. I thought the menu was a bit pricey and the seating areas were crowded together. It would be difficult to have a private conversation here."

  • "This is the perfect spot for going to dinner before an event at Verizon Center. Two of us had trout and one had grilled fish with scallops. Everything, sides included was delicious. There re a few good quality draft craft beers on tap. Nothing fancy, just good food. Also, one diner inquired about getting a lobster or crab roll, which is on the lunch but not dinner menu. The waiter said it could be done!"

  • "The service was great! Quick, accurate and very friendly. There were a few with food allergies and the waitress, Manager and Food Chef came over to make sure that food would be prepared correctly to not effect anyones' allergies, which I thought was very thoughtful and considerate. Otherwise would go again, great setting for a birthday lunch with 5 Ladies and had a great time."

  • "Went to Legal Seafood for my dad's 80th birthday after the Caps v. Bruins game was a party of six. Service was perfect (wasn't a pain by keep constantly asking if everything was OK nor did we feel "abandoned" ) Food was excellent, Highly Recommend the clam chowder and fish & chips my dad and his brother are from Massachusetts, so they are a bit of a snob when it comes the Boston Irish food staples."

  • "I went with my daughter when I visited her at her college. It was awesome to see her enjoying food. She loves seafood so this was a treat after eating college food for 7 months she was just smiling and eating. We shared the trio of calamari, she got the shrimp stuffed with crab cakes and I go the grilled tuna, all was delicious. When we go back we will get the Thai calamari instead of the trio, it was the best of the three offerings. My only one complaint was that I felt like we were being rushed out. It was crazy busy which I think it is always like that."

  • "I had heard of this place so much on the radio that I felt I needed to check it out. I am a seafood lover, so that made this an easier decision. Online the place was visually appealing, looked like a classy place, and after reading about the menu and other things had me on pins and needles to go. My fiance and I decided to make this the place for our dinner date that week, and I'll just say that it was a great choice! That will not be our last visit. The staff was very professional, food was among the best I've eaten, there were smiles on all the face we saw, and it was a wonderful and memorable experience."

  • "With the exception of a meal several years ago with gritty scallops, I usually have very good meals at this Legal Sea Foods. I especially enjoy their Cioppino. A recent meal, however, was "good but not special." The major problem was a lack of "unique flavor" in some of the choices. We started with the fried Calamari Trio, which, to me, could have been "fried anything," although one person did enjoy the different seasonings. I had the Seafood Casserole with cream sauce. I was scarcely able to tell the difference in taste between the scallops, shrimp, lobster, and fish in the casserole. Another person had the Wood Grilled Assortment and said that the three different fish all tasted the same. Next time, I'll stick with the Cioppino."

  • "We hadn't eaten at legal for a few years but had tickets to theater close by. I ordered the casserole and after biting and swallowing a shrimp that felt strange I moved the sauce around and pulled out three completely raw shrimp. I waved the waitress over who walked over and exclaimed "wow those are really raw". She took it back and brought a new casserole without apology, a manager ever coming over and NO acknowledgement on our bill at all! I sent a detailed feedback directly to the legal seafood home office contact online and have had NO response from them at all. As a result of delay we also missed the first scene of the play. It's sad to have a restaurant at this price point display such a callous level of customer service."
