A word from Left Bank Santana Row
Left Bank is an authentic Parisian-style brasserie located in San Jose's vibrant Santana Row. Open since 2003, Left Bank transports guests to a quaint brasserie in Paris, where diners feast upon classic French cuisine in a charming brasserie setting along the boulevard, where people watching is at its best. Inside, the wonderful energy of an authentic French brasserie is in the air. Boasting Santana Row's largest bar, Left Bank is a place to see and be seen.

The large, casual elegant main dining room offers everything from a family table of 20, to a quiet, romantic table for two. The open exhibition kitchen provides onlookers a window into the magic our chefs create. Whether simply sipping a pastis or enjoying a full meal, diners capture the true feeling of the Rive Gauche in Paris.

We've been coming to Left Bank for years and go to both this Santana Row location and Menlo Park. This is our go to spot for dinner, brunch and lunch. LB Steak is for more formal occasions. On this visit, there were five of us for a grandaughter's birthday. The food was as always excellent from the Steak Frites to the Butter Lettuce salad with grilled Salmon. The kids menu always pleases. Desserts including lemon/ pear sorbet and a decandant chocolate not to be missed. Bistro ambiance and excellent service are other reasons to go there.

Left Bank is the restaurant I frequent the most. I enjoy the food, the locale and eating outside. Normally the service is exceptional, this time I was underwhelmed. When I am paying $30 for lunch I expect good service. When I ask for coffee it should not take 10 minutes to get a cup, THEN I had to ask for a spoon. I HAD to ask for refills instead of my cup just being refilled. The last time I asked for a refill the waiter just blew it off and never brought me more coffee.

This restaurant, to which I have been many times, would bring me back more if it weren't so NOISY. The food is very good here and the menu is very diverse. Oysters and sweetbreads are my favorite appetizers. I wish they would tone down the music which adds to the noise level.

Everything was lovely and the food was great with one exception--the noise level was very loud and distracting. To add to this one customer in particular sitting a couple of tables away from us had a very high-pitched voice and talked non-stop. In addition, the waitress would occasionally stop by and talk loudly with her.

Upon being seated the waitress took a beverage order. After ordering the restaurants barrel aged cocktail, a rye based drink, the waitress brought a tequila based cocktail and insisted that it was rye. Sadly this issue continued in a back-and-forth discussion for the remainder of the meal, and only upon insisting that she confirm the drink with the bar tender did she learn that she had brought the wrong drink. After the meal, along with the bill which included the drink, did the waitress returned with the proper drink. Ultimately this was not the evening or dining experience that I had planned or expected.

The Coq au vin was very good, as usual. The French onion soup was also good, but a little too much cheese and not enough broth. I ordered a glass of French champagne and it was bitter and I couldn't drink it. I then asked for the same drink as my husband's- a very good Margarita with Don Julio tequila. The drink I received was obviously not the same. The color was darker and the taste was different, not in a good way. The manager then made us both a new Margarita , which was good, but not as good as my husband's first one, which was delicious!

Dining doesn't get much better than this. Their hospitality, service and culinary excellence are consistent and exceptional. If I were to start listing the menu items that I love, I would have to write out most of the menu...not enough room for that. I haven't had a meal or drink here that I didn't love and then crave for days afterward. It's like being on the Left Bank in Paris without having to pay for a flight. If you're reading this and about to go there, I'm jealous.

It's reputation exceeds reality, or maybe our expectation exceeded reality. In any case, nothing bad but nothing great. We ordered rib eye steak and half roast chicken. Neither was marinated or seasoned for any length of time before cooking, resulting in all the taste on the outside and none on the inside of the beef and poultry.

When I first started going to Left Bank, 5 years ago, the food was so good but as the years have gone by the food quality has gone down so much. No one at our table that night had a meal to remember. Our friend's wife couldn't even eat hers because she did not like it. I think that maybe I will find a small boutique french restaurant next time, Left Bank has become to "chain style" for my taste. Also, I had left my box of leftovers on the table and a waiter brought it to me as we were leaving well, the next morning when my husband warmed it up and started eating it we realized it was some other table's food!!! GROSS!!!!! I don't think we will be going back anytime soon.

We had 5 people and they put us in a dinky table. After complaining they finally moved us. The food took forever to come out. We got there at 7:10 didn't get our food until 9:30. I've had brunch there before and it was nicer the food, noise level and ambiance is so much better during the day. I don't recommend dinner to busy, noisy and not much entree choices either.

I was expecting the food here to be much better given the reviews on Open Table, but I found the food to be pretty average and not particularly memorable. My group had the escargots, moules frites, eggs benedict with soft shelled crab, and salmon scramble. The only dish I'd recommend are the escargots, which came out hot and had a lot of flavor. Everything else had clearly been sitting around for a while because they came out at room temperature. The salmon scramble was alright, but the moules frites and eggs benedict were subpar. Service here is also VERY SLOW. The waiters/waitresses are friendly and check in with you and refill your bread and water, but we waited at least 45 minutes for our food to come out after we had ordered.

  • Why bother booking on Open Table

    Dined on 10/3/2014
First off, we had a great server and our food was excellent. However, here's why I rated lower on service: You can just walk in here, don't bother with a reservation on a Friday night! I booked a reservation for my birthday and when we got there, the hostesses told us to wait, so we did. What got really frustrating was they sat everyone who walked in off the street. 10 minutes pass and I finally had to ask what's going on. They totally forgot about my reservation (my score for that alone - 1 star)! This was my special occasion and a little thing like that can ruin an entire evening! How quickly my table was taken care of after that. The food was well worth it, but I won't book a reservation online when I know I can walk in.

The food at Left Bank is excellent, and the service was tops. Their location cannot be beat. The restaurant is gorgeously laid out with French posters and beautifully chosen artifacts, but 20th-Century French, groovy posters and all, not 18th Century Louis the fourteenth. The only down side is they know the value of what they offer and the prices have been creeping ever higher. Personally, I think the experience is worth it, but be forewarned.
