Diner Reviews
  • "I loved the bouillabaisse. It was a great dinner for Bastille Day. I only wish they served it more often."

  • "We came for the Bastille day celebrations. The food and service were top notch. The hit of the night was the accordian player making you feel like you were in Paris. Everyone was dressed in bright colors and seemed to be having fun."

  • "We've eaten here many times. Always satisfied with the service and food. The hamburger with cheese and fries is great. And, it's big enough to be split between two diners."

  • "Service was poor/slow-did not check in with us throughout the meal; did not have the right silverware for the appropriate courses - no one ever checked, we just grabed the utensils off the empty table next to us. Order was incorrect. Customers next to us received very poor service as well and had to speak with mgmt about their concerns."

  • "For what you pay, you can easily be surprised at the slow service and messed up orders. I'd skip it."

  • "I love Left Bank. It is a classic bistro - tiled floors, dark wood tables. A lovely, lively environment. The food is consistently delicious, I've never been disappointed. Their guidance on the wine list is always spot on. It is good for a date, double date or groups. I'm from back east where I took reliable neighborhood bistros for granted. Now, I drive several towns over to experience it. Enjoy!"

  • "We hosted a dinner for 12 here on a Monday night. The both the meal and service were excellent."

  • "Good food; terrible service. We were seated in the main dining area. It took five minutes before someone brought us water. Another five minutes to get some bread. Almost another five minutes for our waitress to show up and take our drink order. We asked for a "flinty white wine". Waitress says, "Let me ask the bartender". She comes back several minutes later with a recommendation for a flinty RED wine. Dumb as a fence post. Ordered the duck breast. She came back five minutes later: "We're out of the duck breast". We had to ask for more bread. We had to ask for more water. Everyone in the restaurant is very busy. Busy busy. Too busy to actually serve you. I have been treated better at Olive Garden. Good luck."

  • "Great service and a very good meal. The Left Bank is worth a stop when in Menlo Park."

  • "good food and quality - enjoyed the daily special. however this is a average place to go - service was weak with waiter making lots of individual trips - and yet not checking back frequently enough."

  • "Haven't been here in a while, even though I grew up on Santa Cruz Ave. Very good as usual, they were nice to accomodate our "quiet table" request and gave us a booth even though we were only two. Foie Gras was amazing, and so was the Steak Tartare (very moist and flavorful) I was hoping to see the duck confit as I've always had in the past, but I understand if it's seasonal only. Keep up the good work, my only suggestion is the presentation of the menus. I understand the concept of French Bistro, but the plastic makes the restaurant very cheesy and downgrades the ambiance. You want the appeal of a Bistro in Paris on the Champs Elysees, but you are still in Menlo Park, so it should be a bit classier presentation."

  • "We had a warm greeting when we arrived. We were seated immediately. I had a special request for our table and the staff made sure it was taken care of. The service was very personal and done with style. I would recommend for any special occasion."

  • "We dined here because they had some special pork items on the menu for only a few days. We tried two of them and they were delicious, well seasoned, tasty, and succulent. The wine, an Alsatian riesling, was not as dry as most Alsatians, which we liked. Our two disappointments were we had to change tables because the banquette that my wife sat on was so low the table was under her chin and I towered over her in a chair, and the dessert of Creme Brûlée du Jour was a misnomer as it is the same old creme brûlée every day. And remember that Left Bank is very noisy. The tables are very close to each other, and it can be hard to communicate across the table because of all the surrounding conversations and the resultant din in a large dining area."

  • "This experience was characteristically disappointing. You sit down wanting it to be fun, good food and to live up to its potential. You end up trying harder than it does. The food is not exciting, as if it was mass produced. No creativity, no great flavors, sauces, etc. And the service was terrible. We were left alone at a table for 2 and the waitress in the end spontaneously admitted she had forgotten about us. The ambience is hectic in a frenetic way, not bustling energy that you can enjoy. Overall ho-hum. Despite the cache, if we go back it will be with limited expectations."

  • "I specifically asked the waitress if the pork was "fatty and juicy", and she assured me it was. It was dry and tasteless, and I wanted to send it back. No one came by again, or bothered to asked how the food was. 20 minutes later a bus-person asked my dining partner if she could take his empty plate, and she took my nearly untouched plate without even asking if there was an issue with the food (or even if I was done). Bummer. I used to really enjoy Left Bank, and hadn't been there in over a year. I've never had any problems with the service or food before."

  • "We really enjoy Left Bank. There are several dishes I order over and over including the trout, the endive salad, the steak tartare..."

  • "The food here is always well prepared, but not really notable. The choice is what pleases the public which is one of the reasons why they are still in business. I would like to see some more specialites du maison with a little oomph."

  • "When we walked in, I thought it would be a nice dining experience. However, the waiter seemed to be disappointed we did not order drinks and was not, in the least, attentive throughout the meal. The food was nicely presented. However, my paella was not very warm and not very inspired. It makes me feel that this may have been a chain without a real chef in the kitchen. "

  • "Two of us ordered for lunch. I had a half-salad (greens and pecans only, no meat) and water. My business partner had a fish-of-the-day special and water. Nothing else was ordered. The cost was $50 with a modest tip. You have to be kidding."

  • "The Risotto and Scallop dinner were very good. Our salade nicoise was excellent. Our waiter was attentive but very busy so the main dish came but we did not have utensils which our waiter soon realized. The wine both red and white (Chardonnay and Pinot Noir) by the glass were good as well. The restaurant was busy and noisy and the price was moderately high especially the glass of wine. I would go back with friends on special occassions"

  • "During my recent visit a number of tables were empty and the noise level was pleasantly reduced from prior visits. The house Bordeaux was nice, but I really prefer to pour my own wine, or at least be asked. The green salad was good, but was way overdressed. My wife's steak frites included an extremely small piece of meat. It was very tasty and cooked exactly as requested. The peppercorn sauce on the side had no flavor at all. The fries were great. A (huge) split order of profiteroles was nice for dessert. I am not a foodie, but I have been to France a dozen times and I felt this was pretty decent with the exceptions noted (I don't remember anyone ever pouring my wine). I miss France and this place plus Bistro Vida are pleasant reminders."

  • "Left Bank doesn't seem to be what it used to. Service is lacking- slow and not very cordial. Food is just fair, nothing too special."

  • "We booked the Left Bank for a special occasion this past Saturday. The service for our party of 12 was excellent. Everyone in our party enjoyed their meals. We ordered the risotto, rainbow trout, sole, beam, chicken and duck and everyone was pleased with the flavor, portion and neat and clean food presentation. The one party that ordered the pork shank, thought that the shank tasted great but wished there was a little bit more meat on the shank. This was the only complaint in our party. Thanks again Left Bank for a wonderful evening shared by all. Will definitely come back and dine here again. "

  • "I normally like Left Bank for lunch and thought I would take my wife there for dinner. It was Mothers Day but Opentable showed plenty of availability. Bad choice. We were seated 25 minutes late. The waitress was overwhelmed Our first and second choice entrees were sold out (at 8:00 pm) The dinner special had obviously been sitting under the heat lamps for a very long time. We finished the wine and went elsewhere for dessert. "

  • "We requested a table not in the middle of the room and got a wonderfully large booth - very happy! There are rooms upstairs overlooking the downstairs area. Those seemed to be suitable for a little romantic spot. But it was a tad loud - so good for people with kids as well. Large open main floor could be set up for a big groups. Our food was overall very good - everyone enjoyed what they ordered. Mussels were very good. Lamb burger was great. Butter lettuce salad was good - Risotto was excellent! Steak was also very good. 1st time there - will definitely go back for above average, delicious, reasonably priced dinner/lunch. Lively and fun bar area as well overlooking dowtown SC Avenue in Menlo Park. Parking was easy on a Sunday night."

  • "On this very busy day I was pleased with my greeter who explained she had some people to seat and would be right back to seat us. There was a table full of beautiful cut flowers for mini bouquets by the entrance, a nice touch. Even though we expected there would be a lot of young children the noise level was controlled. I don't know if the parents controlled their children or if the restaurant staff had a hand in keeping the children unobtrusive. I am thankful it was a delightful, enjoyable and memorable experience."

  • "The food and service was definitely above average. The items several people in our party likes and wanted were sold out. The items we received instead were great! The food was well seasoned and had fresh ingredients. The portions were not too big or too small. I enjoyed how attentive the waitstaff was to our needs. If there was an option, I would say 4.5 stars. Have the steak tartar, you will not regret it! A rarity for sure!"

  • "Visiting an old friend in Menlo Park warranted my first trip to Left Bank. I ordered the Salad Nicoise, which the pleasant-competent waitress described as a meal. It was, I suppose, but it was certainly an uninspired dish. Decent enough, with a lot of seared, but otherwise raw, tuna, 1/2 egg that did not impress me as having been cooked all that recently and the other, standard (including anchovy) Nicoise ingredients although missing nicoise olives if memory serves. A couple of indifferent pieces of potato and the greens comprised the rest of the dish. I recently made the same dish at home from Mark Bittman's "Kitchen Express" using a good, jarred tuna and enjoyed it more. But for the Peninsula, it was more than OK."

  • "The cheese fondue was cold and runny, and the Salade Verte pretty uninspired (butter lettuce with a plain oil and vinegar and some herbs). But the frisee salad with poached egg was great, and I've been here before, so I know that if you order the right thing, it is good. Server was great -- very responsive and friendly. "
