  • "I had lunch at L'ecole. It was my second time there. Fantastic meal and nice and quiet atmosphere. I was invited in to the kitchen, which was great fun. I ordered a 3 course meal starting with soft shell crab followed by grilled halibut and finally peach upside down tart with an almond ice cream. When my dessert arrived, I was given an extra dessert of fresh fruit and ice cream. That is my kind of restaurant! The entire staff was so nice and welcoming. I cannot recommend this place enough."

  • "the food quality at L'Ecole has gone down tremendously over the years... First of, the waiter gave us an obsolete menu and the appetizer I initially selected was no longer available. The appetizer I then substituted for (salmon over some crusted potatoes) was overly done and too salty. My wife's fish course (seabass) was plain and blend. My meat course (lamb) was just salty, without any distinctive taste. Even the meat was barely warm... I ended up not finishing it (which has never happened before). Adding insult to injury, the price has gone in the opposite direction of the food quality! Ended up paying a little over $200 for two ppl(although we did have a $40 bottle of pinot noir). Sorry, I will not recommend this place any longer"

A recent three-course prix-fixe dinner was top-notch, although desserts weren't as extraordinary as the first two courses. Still, dinner at L'Ecole is a relative bargain. It may be prepared by proxies for major-league chefs, but the students earn their A's."

  • "I think one would reasonably expect a culinary school restaurant to be an ongoing high level experiment. Not so here! All was polished for a job interview at any restaurant in the world. As for the front of the house, the atmosphere is comfortable elegance, without pretense. The service was attentive but not ever-present, a neat piece of magic. I had the hanger steak with creamed corn and onion rings. The creamed corn was not the sticky goo of my childhood, but fresh corn with the snap intact and delicious. The onion rings were a crispy treat without that fry oil presence, piled high like an inverted ice cream cone. The hanger steak was rare as ordered and very tender. At the reasonable menu price it could be a regular haunt for anyone."

Our server, Mr. Watson, was terrific, attentive and knowledgeable, helped us to choose some wonderful wines to pair with each luscious course.   • "Never have I paid so much for such poor quality food. The hanger steak was un-chewable and I had to send it back, though the second dish, arctic char, was very good. The dessert was stale and tasteless. Out of about ten dishes, only two were adequate and up to par. Food was luke-warm and presentation was drab and uninteresting. Maybe the second seating would have been better, but we were unimpressed with most of the experience."

  • "I am in New York infrequently but when I am there I like to visit L'Ecole for a special dinner out. I was a little disappointed this time. The grilled branzino was a little dry on the top side. My companion had the rabbit, the dark meat of which was so tough she needed to ask for a steak knife to cut it. Her first course of white gazpacho was delicious. I wished I had ordered that or the asparagus instead of the duck with pasta which was boring and too much food (noodles) for a first course. Service, explanation about wines, etc. were up to the standards I expect, as was the service."

  • "We have had excellent meals/experiences in the past at L'Ecole. Every couple of years when we visit NYC we have made a special effort to eat there. This time was a big disappointment. The food was mediocre and not artistically presented. There was a minimum of gluten free offerings, which was further disappointment for my husband. We probably will not go there again."

  • "My wife and I are in our late 60's and enjoy French cuisine. Our favorite meals of all time were in the Loire Valley. On this NYC trip we at four restaurants, all with good Zagat ratings (24 or above). In addition to L'Ecole, one was seafood, another Japanese, and the third modern american. We found the food at L'Ecole was far superior to the others, both in preparation and presentation. The ambience and service were comfortable and attentive in all."

  • "Appetizers were excellent (Charcuterie and Pappardelle). My entree (the Black Sea Bass) was just ok - it was short on flavor but after I added salt and pepper it was better - however I do feel that dish should have been spiced better. Dessert was excellent. But what really bothered me were the wine pairings. $22.50 for three glasses of wine (3 oz appetizer, 3 oz entree and 2 oz dessert) is just ridiculous, and they really only suggested the same two bottles of wine for both of us, for the appetizer and entree! Better to get a bottle and share it. Most restaurants do 3 oz/6oz/2oz. Won't be doing that again."

  • "Great French restaurant with impeccable service, food exquisitely prepared and presented in satisfying portions. Menu is varied, Wonderful wines by the glass. A meal of this caliber will cost you plenty more at other restaurants in the city. Highly recommend you check it out. Note to tourists, business casual is acceptable on Sat evening so no worries about a dress code. if you are a couple, I suggest you ask to sit at one of the front window tables as the views add to the NYC experience. Prior to 8 pm, the meals are prepared by graduate students of the Institute, after 8 pm the student brigade takes over under strict supervision from the instructors but missteps could happen so you should be prepared or chose an earlier seating."

  • "We chose this restaurant for my mom's birthday, as a nice treat and were particulary excited to try out this restaurant, fully knowing it was part of the school (we've dined a number of times at other similar restaurants at CIA and others). However,from the appetizers something was amiss. I ordered the Pasta with Duck which was far too heavy with poor blend of flavors. My father, who got the meat plate, was absolutely unappetizing, we adore foiegras but it looked like innards on a plate. Unfortunately, the main course was no better-- the burger was miscooked, the fish dry and sides luke warm. The desert, was by far the best part of the meal, though unfortunately the "fruit soup" was just watered down sugar. A truly disappointing experience."

  • "The waiter, although pleasant, took the wrong order and consequently the wrong main course was delivered to the birthday person. Once it was returned to the kitchen, the companion's plate was also removed and probably sat under a heat lamp or was re-plated because when it was returned to the table, it was soggy, the meat was grayish and it looked very unappetizing. I could not eat it, it did not look good or taste good. The staff was very nice about it and professional, they offered to make up a fresh order (we didn't have time for this again) so they took the cost off our bill and were very apologetic. We have had other meals on special occasions here before without incident."

  • "By internet I asked for a reservation for lunch anytime between 2 and 4 pm. All places were taken and I was given a place till 5:30 pm. However once I arrived at 5:30 I saw that the restaurant was almost empty. Why could'nt I get a place earlier? Once in the restaurant I asked for a table for two looking at Broadway street but I was told that that table was reserved so I was given a table looking at a street with mayor work construction under way. I left the restaurant at 6:30 and the table that I originally asked for was still empty. The wine and the food was very good. As an apperitive my wife initially took at the bar a coctail and I a glass of champagne.... it would be a good idea to have Moet et Chandon."

  • "The atmosphere and service is fantastic, despite some hickups during the night, which are to expect from students. The wine list was quite narrow, but the ones on it were splendid. Highly recommend the Tokai (spelling?) dessert wine. Foodwise I wouldnt complain, but rather praise it, had they not claimed to be a top French(!?) restaurant. All the dishes were cooked nicely, not great. I had a steak with corn and onion rings which tasted nice separately but didnt really come together as a dish. The affordability appears excellent on paper (3 courses + wine pairings for $66 on manhattan) but in reality sort of feel kinda.. Not. In conclusion, a solid restaurant with good food that claims to be better than they are, and cerainly not French."

  • "Broadway, Grand Street, Canal Street, Soho--the noise, crowds, construction, and grit of these streets immediately ceases when you pass through the unassuming entrance of L'Ecole and enter the beautifully designed sophisticated dining room with its comfortably upholstered chairs, well-spaced tables, bouquets of flowers, and soft lighting. It's a real oasis. And the food is outstanding. The grilled asparagus with perfectly cooked soft egg appetizer was memorable, as was the chilled summer soup. Our table had entrees of rabbit, lamb, and chicken and raved about them. And the desserts were just what you'd expect from an exceptional French restaurant--exceptional!"

  • "It was a lunch gathering on a week-day, and we were three people. The service was kind and competent, but a bit slow. The food was irregular. My apeteizer (home-made papardelle) was tasteless and overcooked, but the mussels were rightly cooked and meaty. I could observe that the salmon appetizer chosen by my colleagues was good, and the duck breast chosen by one of them as main dish appeared and (I was told) tasted excellent. "

  • "I eat here every time I am in NYC. You can beat the $44 fixed price, especially for the amazing food. The menu is different every time - always fun to see what's on it. The service is fantastic, too. Benjamin took good care of us and was fun to talk to. I'll be back!!"
