Diner Reviews
  • "Each and every dish was superb with innovative ingredient combinations which all worked extremely well together. We area likely to return in the near future."

  • "Went for restaurant week, thought the dishes were all intricate and very well prepared. Also thought the portion sizes were great (not as big as some other establishments, but still more food than I could finish in a sitting with dessert), and they were great for the summer season. We were in the later seating, when my companion asked for the soft shell crab she was told they were all out, but later during the evening we saw at least 2 other people receive it. We still totally enjoyed the meal, but she was a bit miffed. The french fries were also excellent, they tout all over the joint that their's are 1 of the best in America, and though they didn't blow my mind they also didn't disappoint."

  • "Food was wonderful. Hostess and manger great. But it must have been first day for waiter, never put in drinks order or dessert order, spent time talking at bar, had to speak to manager to get him to take order."

  • "Restaurant week menu looked extensive so was excited about going. Food was just okay- nothing too outstanding. Pasta felt undercooked. Peaches used in the dessert were not ripe. Portions were small."

  • "L'Ecole is a French restaurant that is operated by The International Culinary Center in NYC. Our three-person party dined during Restaurant Week and we all had the three-course prefix dinner and wine pairing at the bargain price of $60.50 per person. Everyone's dinner was excellent and the value for a New York City gourmet meal was outstanding. The only complaint that I had with dining experience is that the waiter was in a hurry to complete our service, as the ordering and delivery the dessert course was rushed and the cookies/sweet that are provided by some French restaurants with the check, was delivered with our desserts. Nevertheless, given the outstanding quality and value of our meal, l strongly recommend L'Ecole. - Alan Ganz"

  • "This was our fourth visit to L'Ecole. The previous three were excellent - this one was a little disappointing. Our reservation at 1.30PM was not at the peak of lunchtime, and yet the service was extremely slow. It took 15 minutes just to bring us menus - and over two hours until we finished desert. More importantly, we encountered one problem with the meal itself. First the good news: the pate was excellent and the duck breast that my wife ate (cooked medium rare) was perfect! However, halibut should not be rare - but mine was. It was barely seared on the outside and I had to send it back. That said, I'm sure we will still go back again - their baguettes are the best in NYC and as good as any "baguette artisanale" in Paris!"

  • "I order it on restaurant week website but when i was there, the manager said there was no restaurant week menu on weekend. other people seat around us are all in same situation."

  • "So we went to the NYCGO page to book for restaurant week, clicked through, made the reservation, and showed up as planned. When we arrived we did not see any reference to the $38 pricing. Apparently the "weekdays only", presumably displayed somewhere during the reservation process, escaped me. It was Saturday. Asking for the $38 3-course pre fixe rate was embarrassing and ultimately upset us, with the manager bringing us printouts with footnotes. We ultimately stayed and dined, but that kick off marred the meal. You guys are THE reservation experts; at least that's the way I see it. You need to make it clearer - better yet - impossible for me to click through and make a weekend reservation that won't honor the rate. Something."

  • "Last minute I made a reservation here. Everything was amazing...the service, the food, the wine pairing, everything. I will definitely be going back."

  • "Dining at a restaurant where the kitchen staff is "in training" might seem like a dicey proposition, but at L'Ecole, it seems like a sure thing. Everything we ordered was delicious and made to order. Only one lapse in service, otherwise professional. The dining room is modern and very attractively done."

  • "L'Ecole was a fine place for my wife's birthday dinner, with excellent food, fine wine, very friendly and responsive service, and a birthday candle and cake at the end. We both loved the thoughtful menu and innovative food choices. We did the wine-paring, and were presented with wonderful wine choices to compliment each course. The atmosphere was light and friendly, and not at all noisy."

  • "This place is a hidden find and the best part as it is at ICC, your meal is being prepared by a future 5-star chief."

  • "Came here for Restaurant Week lunch. I liked that they had many choices to choose from. We were disappointed that the soft shell crab appetizers were sold out by the time we ordered (around 130P). I've heard this happen to other diners earlier in the week, and they should expect to have enough on hand. Other than that disappointment, the pappardelle with duck and corn broth was very good. The breaded skate Milanese entrée was tasty as well. I was a little underwhelmed with the dessert I had (Almond croquant sponge cake), and was expecting something better."

  • "Great food and great wine list, I had wished they serve more specifically French type of dishes."

  • "Everything served is delicious and the presentation makes you want to dive right into it. Portions were more than satisfactory. I had the FOURCHOU lobster which had a supplemental fee--BUT it was worth it. My co-worker had the sliced hanger steak and could not stop raving. We enjoyed the entire experience and do look forward to returning. I loved the idea of the card given to each table for a $10 credit towards the next meal. We both look forward to returning soon."

  • "We had a reservation but arrived late - very late. We were seated promptly without any problem. Our waiter was very nice and we enjoyed the dinner at our own pace. Did not feel any pressure to rush. The food was good. Just a little noisy at our corner."

  • "All an enjoyable experience: the food is very well done, service is very attentive, but you will notice that everything is done by the book, just as you'd expect in a school, from the greeting at the door, to the farewell. Scripts are followed, quite well mind you, but it feels as scripted as it is. So, ignore that this is the staff being trained, and it's great. My wife and I will go back, and we'll just smile when the precisely memorized scripts are repeated, and the just so attention is given, just as if this were an exam. (Might well be.)"

  • "I started with the pate followed by the halibut and finished with a chocolaty hazelnut delight. My husband had the asparagus mouse, the hangar steak ending with the pineapple upside down pudding. I can say that from the moment we walked in the door everything was good. My pate was delicious, a chunky meaty piece served with accoutrements that were not needed. The halibut was a lovely flaky perfectly cooked piece of fish served with a light sauce. My husbands mousse was as light as a feather and his steak cooked rare just melted in your mouth. The desserts were served with ice cream and tea cookies. It was all delicious."

  • "I recently visited L'Ecole during restaurant week and had a great experience. A lot of places will usually roll their eyes when you tell them you are lactose intolerant and gluten sensitive unless they specialize in the cuisine. The manager not only choose the best menu items to eat with the restrictions, but also made me feel good about the choices as he had similar restrictions. The best part the food did was delicious even without dairy/gluten which is not usually the case. The red currant sorbet was the only dessert I could eat and it was the best sorbet I have ever tried. My friends liked it even better than some of their desserts. The services was great from our server Michael (I believe) to the manager and the rest of the staff."

  • "For years, I have tried to experience this place and I guess the wait was worth it. The food was surprisingly well prepared and seasoned well. Breads were totally well done, with smell and texture that brought me back to France. The best soft shell crab, for sure. Waiter was well mannered and attentive. Weak link was the desert. Not that it was bad, it was nothing special."

  • " I selected the two course price-fix lunch, which included the main course and dessert. My dish was sliced hanger steak (tender) with sweet corn and onion rings that was delicious. For dessert I had the up-side down peach cake with ice cream. Benson was our server who offered suggestions and wine pairing that we took. We were happy with them. It is definitely a place to go."

  • " The wedding dress cakes in the front window sent a signal as we entered a 50's style room and were greeted by the nicest hostess. Everyone was nice. Menu is interesting and very inexpensive for what it is. We were 3 and everything we had was terrific. I had cavatelli as an appetizer and a hanger steak.......both excellent. Dale and our guest had lobsters (the day's special) and their comment was that it was as fresh as could be. Desserts were terrific also. We knew that cooking was done by the students but there was nothing on the menu or in the restaurant that trumpeted it (maybe I missed it). Surely, you could not tell from the quality of dinner."

  • "Charcuterie: Deliscious esp. the pork rillette but would be better with a preserve & toast points rather than mustard Soft Shell Crab: Lightly deep fried w/refreshing citrus sauce & watermelon Pan Seared Duck Breast: Perfect medium-rare but combo of mushroom vinagrette+arugula in vinagrette was overpoweringly sour but the mushroom was different from usual citrus based sauces Sauteed Arctic Char: Best entree of the 3. Perfectly cooked, moist&tender served w/cucumbers & interesting curried yogurt+carrot dill mayo. Very inventive sauces & accompaniments Skate: Nicely breaded&pan fried, moist, tender, & well seasoned. Arugula salad it was served with=heavy on vinagrette & was neither an inventive nor a creative addition which was disappointing."

  • "As usual this restaurant continues to surprise us with their very high quality service and little details that make a huge difference. In the OpenTabe reservation I mentioned we were coming for my wife's birthday and without any reminders or phone calls thay prepared the desert included in the prix-fix with a very nice chocolate note of Happy Birthday in addition to a prosecco offering (on the house)"

  • "We were thoroughly impressed by our visit to L'Ecole, you can tell that the waiters are students with their slightly nervous, but incredibly attentive service. The food was really excellent, with all three courses at an extremely high level of quality. The accompanying words were brilliantly chosen as well and all-in-all it was a fantastic experience for a romantic meal. And at the prices offer, I suspect it is unbeatable value for money in New York. Will definitely return when I am next in NYC."

  • "I had lunch at L'ecole. It was my second time there. Fantastic meal and nice and quiet atmosphere. I was invited in to the kitchen, which was great fun. I ordered a 3 course meal starting with soft shell crab followed by grilled halibut and finally peach upside down tart with an almond ice cream. When my dessert arrived, I was given an extra dessert of fresh fruit and ice cream. That is my kind of restaurant! The entire staff was so nice and welcoming. I cannot recommend this place enough."

  • "the food quality at L'Ecole has gone down tremendously over the years... First of, the waiter gave us an obsolete menu and the appetizer I initially selected was no longer available. The appetizer I then substituted for (salmon over some crusted potatoes) was overly done and too salty. My wife's fish course (seabass) was plain and blend. My meat course (lamb) was just salty, without any distinctive taste. Even the meat was barely warm... I ended up not finishing it (which has never happened before). Adding insult to injury, the price has gone in the opposite direction of the food quality! Ended up paying a little over $200 for two ppl(although we did have a $40 bottle of pinot noir). Sorry, I will not recommend this place any longer"

  • "Everyone at L'Ecole is a high-level restaurant student under the supervision of world-class chefs. So it's no surprise that the food can be glorious and the service is eager yet never pushy. A recent three-course prix-fixe dinner was top-notch, although desserts weren't as extraordinary as the first two courses. Still, dinner at L'Ecole is a relative bargain. It may be prepared by proxies for major-league chefs, but the students earn their A's."

  • "I discovered this place through my guide book and let me tell you, L'ecole is a hidden gem in this otherwise very busy area of NYC. You're treated as royalty the moment you walk in the door. The food selection on the menu is carefully thought out, there's something for everyone, from hamburgers to lobsters. Still hesitant? Go there for lunch, you won't believe the pricing. I will be back the next time I'm in town."
