Diner Reviews
  • "We had a very nice meal, we were recommended it, and enjoyed the dining experience."

  • "I have lived and worked in Soho for many years. It was a great day when I found L'Ecole just a short walk from home and office. I've lunched and dined there quite a few times over the past few years, and have never been disappointed in the interesting menu items, the quality and presentation of the food, or the service, which has almost always been impeccable. I have to be away from the city a lot these days, but L'Ecole is always at the top of my "To Do List" when I return home to NYC."

  • "Service was very good. I especially loved that the students would explain each dish to you and were very agreeable with any questions. The food itself was good but i wouldnt say it was particuarlly memorable. It was all in all still a good experience more so becuase of the service and knowing that it was a student run restaurant."

  • "For our 2nd anniversary we decided to visit L'Ecole on a Friday night. I made the reservation on OpenTable for 8pm and mentioned it was our anniversary in my booking. We were greeted warmly by the hosting staff and shown to a very well set table. Our servers were eager to help us find the right drinks and food selections and catered to some small adjustments we requested on items. The food was incredibly delicious each and every bite. In order of our favorites... Baguettes were by far the best I've ever had. Duck ravioli was amazing and sinfully delicious Steak was excellent The tomatoes in my girlfriend's salad were pickled and refreshing totally out of this world. Strawberry tart was absolutely perfect. Overall 5 star experience!!!"

  • "The food is expertly prepared, the menu is well chosen, the price is terrific for this quality, and the atmosphere is calm and confident. This is one of my favorite places to go in NYC."

  • "We were delighted to accidentally find Ecole on the Google map of the area. The experience was a joy. Our server and associates were most pleasantly attentive and the food innovative, correct size portions , delicious. The non-oak Chardonnay was a find! Compliments to all for a wonderful experience. We have been to many Michelin 3 stars and this restaurant is right up there. We will return many times even though it is a "trip" for us."

  • "We had the three course prix fixe which included mixed salads, chicken with truffles, and the pan seared duck breast. Desserts were mini profiteroles. The appetizers, entrees and desserts were well prepared. I would rate the food as very good. My only complaint was a sense of being rushed. We had 6:30 reservations on a Friday evening and the wait staff seemed to be hovering too much as they paced back and forth throughout the meal checking for empty plates so they could bring the next course. Although the restaurant is noted for its good service, I would have preferred not having so much vigilance by the waiters with their constant presence in the balcony area where we were seated. We would have preferred a more leisurely meal."

  • "We have often dined at LEcole and it was one of our favorite restaurants. We were delighted to note that Cassoulet, a difficult dish to find in NY, was on the menu. To our great disappointment, the beans and meat were dry as leather and grossly under seasoned. We have lived in France and have eaten cassoulet many times in the South West region where it is one of the showcase dishes. The rest of the meal was lackluster. The saffron pasta did not taste of saffron and was dull. The desserts were perfunctory. Too bad!"

  • "I have been wanting to go to l'ecole for some time. We were first put off by the decor , the place looks like a corporate canteen. When appetizers came further disappointment the salad was soaking in sauce my soup was not tasty just salty. It got worse with entrees I got the duck which was nice, my husband got the cassoulet which had noting of a cassoulet. The duck meat was tasty but there was absolutely no sauce it was a mountain of dried beans! Desert: I got the profiteroles , the ice cream was crystalized yuk, no warm chocolate sauce poured over just a little on the side. In summary, as far as I am concerned this place is totally over-rated, it is not a foodies' place."

  • "I will start with the service, it was a bit nonchalant. The food. We came here because of the recommendation in bib, it started out extremely well with a fantastic extra appetizer. The starters was good. When we came to the main course we had one pasta that was over cooked and over salted, it shall not happen at a place like this. The duck was excellent. The two desserts was great. The wine matching was also great. We didn't really understand the setup of the French, Italian and the Indian theme on the menu, it felt outdated and a bit comic. My recommends is to order the French alternatives on the menu."

  • "The students at the French Culinary Institute do a great job of producing superb meals using fresh ingredients as and when these are available. The service at the restaurant is excellent."

  • "I took my daughter for a special lunch at L'Ecole. The food was creative, the atmosphere serene and the service exceptional. Overall, a wonderful experience. I highly recommend this restaurant for a special occasion or a casual lunch (since there pre-fixe lunch deal was also very reasonable!)"

  • "Although we did not realize at first L'Ecole had a fixed menu for dinner (either 3 or 4 courses with or without matching wine), We were pleasently surprised. The menu is short and to the point: well presented and detailed in its explanations. The personnel is not only attentive but also knowledgeable! Certainly a plus. We only drank wine by the glass but next time we will go with the matching wines wine. All in all EXCELLENT"

  • "My wife and I had this place recommended to us to celebrate our 20th anniversary. The food was good considering that the chefs are students. We had the four course fixed price with wine. The wine pairings were excellent. My favorite was dessert. The rest of the food was good but not something I will remember or crave a week from now."

  • "This is our fourth time to L'Ecole and unfortunately it was not as wonderful as the previous times. We opted for the four course dinner, since there were four of us and we wanted to try the different offerings. The food was very salty in general and the dishes were very heavy and lacked subtlety. For example, we were given a cassoulet that had lamb in it, but it was pretty much a heavy dish with cannelini beans, sausage, lamb and salt placed in a dish...very boring presentation. The fish was a little better, fried and placed on a broth, but the duck was not spectacular. The osso bucco was salty and not very tender. Dessert was not spectacular except for the pumpkin chocolate cake with a nice syrup. Disappointing but we will try again."

  • "I went with my two friends for brunch to catch up and enjoy a fancier place to eat. I have passed by this place many times and have never realized it was a restaurant! What a find! I think the brunch deal is truly amazing and the staff was very helpful with my questions. I also really liked the ambiance of the place and did not feel rushed for leaving as we enjoyed eating and chatting. What a nice place to relax and enjoy a weekend meal."

  • "Friendly staff quick to answer questions about various dishes. The wait staff seems to enjoy food themselves and could readily talk about the dishes they personally enjoyed. Presentation of food was attractive on the plate. Pacing of plates to table never made us feel rushed."

  • "My wife and I always makes time for L'Ecole when we are in New York. The food is great, the service is great, the noise level is moderate, and we're having a good time every time we go there! This is a hidden gem which deserves more attention."

  • "Were made to feel as though we were special guests at someone's home. Very knowledgeable staff on all areas of food and wine. Food of course fantastic in true French style. Baguettes the best I've ever had outside of Paris. Don't stop what you're doing. Excellent and memorable dining experience."

  • "Every time I visit NYC I make sure to eat at l'Ecole. I am never disappointed. The food is always creative and delicious. I must admit I liked it better when the front room staff were also students and were familiar with every aspect of restaurants and food. They were much better informed and forthcoming."

  • "We have been to this restaurant several times and will keep coming back Food and service are great and you can't beat the prices of the prix fix menus This restaurant never disappoints!"

  • "I recently dined at L'Ecole for their lunch Prix Fixe menu. It did not disappoint. The country pate was full of rich flavors, and the accompanying celery root was a lovely surprise. The chef's classic Cassoulet was a perfect dish for a cold afternoon - hearty and filling. The strawberry tart was flaky and delicious, bursting with fresh strawberries and creme. The wait staff was polite, attentive, and helpful during my visit. I would definitely recommend and will return again!"

  • "The pork belly terrine wasn't well-cooked pork belly. The pickled onion would have been fantastic had the pork belly been fatty, but it was just really acidic against the dry pork. The star anise pineapple was yum but the chicharrones were too hard. My companion's pork "osso bucco" was also dry. And they did not serve the dish with a marrow spoon - one of the best parts! She did enjoy the wine pairings which I agreed were well-selected. Thank goodness, as we needed it to wash down the dry pork! My burger was average and the "truffle " fries arrived soggy. Yet a thank you is in order for being attentive to food allergies - but I would like to see a more balanced menu as there were nuts in everything and very few vegatarian options."

  • "The atmosphere is very pleasant, in fact nicer than I expected from a culinary school. The wait staff are professionals, not students and the service was excellent. There are two choices, both pre fix: one three course and one four course. The portions were appropriate, the wine was a good value and the food was good. We had the sea bass and cod. We have had better but were not disappointed. This is a solidly good meal in a nice environment with exceptional service."

  • "I went there with two friends of mine, we are all French and foodies. The food was very good, well cooked, and the portions were large. We all had different meals, so I was able to taste a few different things. The terrine and the fall salad were both very good. I also had a burger with fries, and my burger did come medium rare (which does not happen everywhere) and the fries were perfectly cooked. The wine list seemed interesting, and again a very good value. The staff was very friendly and professional. Overall a great experience. I will go back for sure."

  • "we had the Restaurant menu which wasn't much cheaper than their usual offer. Lots of choice for appetizers and entrees and all our choices where perfectly cooked, beautifully presented and had a very good balanced flavour. The restaurant is very pleasant and spacious and not too many tables squashed into a small space. It's a shame it is at the bottom of Broadway not my usual place to look for a good restaurant. Only knew it was here because of the restaurant week but will definitely come back as I think it is very good value for an excellent meal. Great wine list and a special selection of slightly more reasonable bottles for the restaurant week which we took advantage of."

  • "I went to L'Ecole for Restaurant Week with a group of friends. I have no issues concerning service at all, but a few of us and undercooked and cold food. There was a cod dish with grits on the menu. The cod had absolutely no flavor and the grits were cold and not properly cooked. The waiter did come and ask if everything was okay. After telling him about the grits, he immediately offered to bring hot, fully cooked grits. The ones he brought were exactly the same. Another person had an extremely charred burger. The manager came over and offered me another dish, which was very gracious and also gave us a few extra desserts on the house. Overall, I would maybe return for a drink, but definitely not the food."

  • "My friend and had dinner there for the first time and tried Restaurant week menu. I had Sunchoke Chowder, Pan-seared duck breast and Chocolate cake. Duck is my favorite dish and I always tried Duck dish whenever the restaurant have. I liked Sunchoke Chowder soup, however, their Pan-seared duck breast was good, but I am not sure if it could meet their Zagat rate,Food 24. The meats was a bit too overcooked and sauce tasted a bit burn... Not my #1 duck dish compared to other restaurants. And their servers, not our waiter for our table, were not professional enough. The way they put / take away dishes was a bit sloopy. Are they students too?! I may go back there to try their original lunch or brunch menu..."
