Diner Reviews
  • "We went here after church for brunch. The food was quite good, but the service was very slow. It took too long for our food to arrive at the table. It took us over 1 1/2 hours for brunch. Drinks took forever and the kitchen was very slow. Wait staff was slow and our waitress disappeared for long periods of time and seemed apathetic. Probably won't go here again because it took too long. If you are going to offer free drinks, get them to the tables quickly!"

  • "First of all, the service was attentive but not overbearing, which was a welcome change from the usual, especially on a warm, quiet Sunday morning such as it was when we visited. I had the Leaf Benedict, which was cooked perfectly--very tender filet, delicious flavor combination, not overzealous with seasonings, and came out at still hot with a mimosa. The atmosphere is relaxed and quiet; we were treated to a live bassist and keyboardist duo, and they played without any amplification to really bring home the Sunday morning feel. Wonderfully well-thought-out establishment, great for any occasion."

  • "Great outdoor seating; so-so portions; very slow service."

  • "Picked this because it looked good. Sat on barstools that were truly uncomfortable. In the bar and not the dining room. I am not sure why as we had a reservation. Noisy. The service was OK until the end. Then our server, Leslie MacDowell completely ruined the evening. She had already given us a large dose of attitude. Not quite rude, but close. We certainly didn't get any of that old southern hospitality. I gave her a credit card and she disappeared. I mean disappeared. 10 minutes later I spotted her chatting with a group of friends. Reluctantly she came back with check and we paid. So the service was really disappointing. What a shame for a restaurant with good food.I would go back, but avoid the bar and Leslie!"

  • "My wife and I enjoyed a delicious meal - great spot for two or groups. Try the PP&J beer - incredible!"

  • "Leaf was recommended to us by the person at the reservations desk of our hotel. We sat outside which was lovely, although the bugs were biting. Our server, Brian, was attentive and courteous. However, the food was lackluster and it seemed clear that the chef didn't understand how flavors work together. The miso noodle bowl was truly inedible--it was overpowered by an enormous amount of vinegar and the presentation was revolting. The noodles, meat and vegetables were churned up in a dark, acrid broth. I rarely send food back to the kitchen, but this was inedible. Brian did his best to take care of us by bringing something else to the table and removing the offending dish from the bill."

  • "We have been to Leaf several times over the last year but were very disappointed in our recent experience there. We attended on the weekend of the bridge run and there was a shorter menu, apparently to simplify what was expected to be a busy weekend. The menu was alright but was not very diverse. The service was lack luster. Our server really didn't seem like she wanted to be there, had tables in other parts of the restaurant and was less than attentive. We were not offered desert or coffee or after dinner drinks. We were celebrating so we went on to another place for desert and coffee. It's too bad because our previous visits had been very enjoyable."

  • "I had lunch at Leaf before and was excited to go again and to take friends from out of state. Unfortunately, they only offered a very limited menu the night we went for dinner. Perhaps it was because of the Bridge Run weekend, but we were all disappointed that our choices were limited. When we asked what the specials were, the response was "no specials, this is our menu for the evening." On a good note, the salmon was cooked perfectly and the chicken under a brick was very tasty."

  • "We went at 5 on a Sunday not busy service was ok nothing great or bad until dinner 3 out of 4 entrees not good. Brick chicken looked like mud and brick would have been more appealing to look at same with meatloaf just ugly and bland. One entree served with crunchy rice. Just not a good experience. Will not be back too many good spots in town for a return to bad one."

  • "Good food, quiet in comparison with most restaurants which was awesome since my elderly parents were with me:) really pretty view out the patio, lovely night. Bright, clean, modern restaurant - it was very nice. Waiter was average - we sort of had to guide him along, but it all worked out. Not chaotic so that was really nice!"

  • "We have dined at Leaf several times and always enjoyed it but this time it was awful. My husband loved his beet & arugala salad until he found a 1" piece of wire in it. The restaurant comp'd the salad. Unfortunately, both entrees were tasteless. The shrimp risotto had to have been cooked with water. Absolutely no flavor. The poached shrimp were loaded with pepper but otherwise lackluster. The asparagus in the risotto consisted of shaved stems of asparagus so thin you could see through them. The fresh tomatoes topping the risotto were also tastelesss. My husband's mussels were good but the broth they were served in also tasted like water. I wonder if the chef was absent that night. Cannot think of another excuse for such poor tasting food."

  • "I had friends in town for the bridge run and so I made reservations in anticipation of a good meal. I have been to leaf two other times and had a great dinner- not so this time. When we sat down we were presented with a menu that had about half of what is normally on it. The selections were so few to begin with and then we were told they were out of one entree on top of that! It was embarrassing because I had told them all how great this place was. Three of us ordered the risotto and when it came out all three dishes were ice cold. Another person ordered a medium steak and it came out nearly raw and another person ordered a medium burger that was also very undercooked. I was so embarrassed that I suggested the place."

  • "The ambiance and atmosphere is AMAZING. It's gorgeous and romantic. The food is okay but not the best I've ever had. The service was mediocre as well."

  • "Cool outdoor resturant but all of our entrees we super salty- it's like the dumped a bunch of salt on all their food before bringing it to the table. We even had to sent one entree back because it just too salt to eat."

  • "I was some what disappointed with our experience. We waited about 5 minutes at the door before we were greeted. The service was ok, the food was ok, and the ambience was fair. I just expected more from a Charleston restaurant. We wont go back."

  • "I am sorry to submit a negative review. This is my first ever. Leaf just was not good. Each of the 6 of us was dissatisfied with our meal. Not tasty, not inspired, not fresh. Leaf was our only disappointing restaurant experience in Charleston, which is an amazing food town. We would not go back."

  • "Went as a group of 5 on a Wednesday night and were treated to a great meal. It was our first time at Leaf and every course we had was delicious( The fried oysters melt in your mouth and all the entree's were spot on). Will certainly go back."

  • "I was fortunate enough to be treated to my birthday lunch at Leaf. While the food was absolutely wonderful, we had to track down wait service for beverages, then ordering, then check. It was just constant requests for service in order to keep a lunch hour even close to being within an hour.."

  • "Leaf was a second choice the first time we went but will be our first choice on many more occasions. Great food and a good atmosphere."

  • "We had lunch there on a Saturday and arrived 30 minutes early, It was clearly a popular spot., filled with a lot of the beautiful people in Charleston. Even though there was a wait for an outside table, the restaurant was able to seat us shortly, The lunch menu was small but still had some good options. We both ordered the shrimp po'boy (good) and truffle parmesan fries. Just as we started to eat the rain started to fall. Our waitress had promised that they would move us inside quickly if that happened, and true to her word, they did. It actually worked out well. The tiramisu we ordered for dessert was a bit disappointing - in size and flavor. All in all however the overall experience was nice, We would return for sure!"

  • "We have eaten at Leaf four or five times now and have nothing but good to report. It looks like some great items have been added to the menu recently. So, if you haven't been there in a while, it's good time to visit Leaf."

  • "We had lunch at leaf and it was excellent. We were a fairly large party. We made reservations yet still waited for 30 minutes to sit. While it seemed those without reservations went right in and sat. Service was prompt and good was great. Definitely would recommend for lunch while walking around King."

  • "With Spring hovering nearby, we're all ready to get outside and enjoy the warmer days. Leaf has the best patio in Charleston, hands down. It's a perfect spot the meet friends for lunch or brunch. The menu is eclectic and has something for everyone with salads, sandwiches, and entrees. The Greek Salad is very good. The Bocadillo with Serrano Ham and Manchego is delicious too!"

  • "Leaf is all around amazing! I went for the first time for restaurant week and I keep coming back. The food is always delicious and the service is always helpful and friendly. Between that and the atmosphere of the place--you can't go wrong!"

  • "Food has improved from when they first opened and the staff went out of their way to make us comfortable. We had two orders of Steak and Fries and one was spectacular and one was excessively fatty - they took the price of fatty steak off the bill (which we weren't expecting since we notified them at the end of the meal). Nice atmosphere."

  • "This is our second dining experience at Leaf, though, this time we brought 3 other couples. As always, a great dining experience. Our server was terrific about pointing out items that were in short supply as we sat down. I heartily recommend Leaf for any occasion."

  • "This place is a great local restaurant and bar off the beaten tourist path. It's always busy but not over the top loud. The food is very good and they have a great wine list. The bartenders and wait staff are great and they work hard."

  • "We very much enjoyed our lunch at Leaf. The house specialties (pig ears in lettuce), biscuits with gravy, chicken wings, etc were all delicious. The pig ears in lettuce, crunch and delicious, were a new treat and unlikely to be found above the Mason-Dixon line. Highly recommended for ambience as well as food."

  • "This is by far my favorite restaurant downtown for lunch. Right off of King Street with a great location that not everyone knows about. We took our friends who had never heard of it and now they're hooked. The food is consistently good every time."

  • "Although service was a little slow and dining room was nothing special, the food more than made up for these. Very good selection and well prepared brunch items. Portions were large and you can't beat it for the price. Appeared to have many locals dining there, which is always a plus."

  • "We have been to Leaf several times over the past18 months and always found it to be excellent. However, we were very disappointed in the food this time. The menu was limited and they were out of a few items - surprising because there were very few diners. (It was a rather cold and dismal night.) The moussaka was covered in a sauce that didn't seem to go with the dish. We had never seen potatoes in moussaka either. The shrimp and risotto was undercooked. Probably go for drinks but won't eat there again."
