A word from Le Vieux Logis
Welcome to Le Vieux Logis!

A long time Bethesda favorite, Le Vieux Logis offers a newly inspired French menu and wine list, perfect for intimate dinners, cozy nights out and quiet conversation with friends and colleagues. The kitchen showcases flavorful French recipes that change slightly with the season and the availability of locally sourced ingredients. Authentically French, the restaurant has the feel of a bistro with a French country flavor. Joyful colors on crisp white tablecloths feel warm and yet curious.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "It seems that the place recently changed ownership, but do not be deterred by this. My Onion Soup Au Gratin was excellent, topped with melted gruyere cheese. I chose the duck a l'orange, prepared in the confit method. It fell off the bone and was delicious, garnished with orange sections, a delicate orange sauce (not too sweet) and some mixed greens. My colleague had the soft-shell crab, which he said was very good. I topped it off with a dessert of crème brulee, which had an apricot jam inside (very good). The sugar on top was perfect, not too thick like some I've had. All in all, great, authentic food. It was a little pricey, but worth it for a special dinner. The place was a bit small and cramped, but worth going to."

  • "Everything was great. The food was terrific, the service excellent, and the ambiance was great. The staff truly understands hospitality and terrific food. The new chef/owners are taking Le Vieux Logis to new heights!!"

  • "Stellar food! Nice staff and the atmosphere is very European. Quite."

  • "This was my first experience at Le Vieux Logis. The food was reasonably good, service was average, quiet ambiance. Overall a good experience but there are certainly better French restaurants in the area for true foodies."

  • "This was my wife's and my first visit in several years, and we were eager to see what changes the new owners had rendered. Ambience was nice. Much of the decorative clutter is gone, leaving a simpler look. Wait staff were excellent--attentive and friendly without being intrusive. My wife had the roasted shrimp, and called it "maybe the best I've had." I had the rockfish, which came in a striking presentation with neat rows of small andouille slices on top of the fish. This gave a little "bite" to the rockfish. Outstanding dish--and from locally caught fish. Overall, the new Vieux Logis is a bit on the pricey side, but we left thinking we got our money's worth. We'll be back!"

  • "I love this restaurant, especially for special occasions. The service is a little slow and the wine is overpriced but overall it's a great place."

  • "The food was prepared by chefs who were trained in the classical French school. Every dish was perfect."

  • "very good food, friendly service. Pretty as ever. We will be back."

  • "Le Vieux Logis is one of the best kept secrets in Bethesda. It is consistently pleasant, the fare is always noteworthy, and the service is top-notch. This is a dining establishment for adults and well-behaved children who want to converse and to hear each other. It is not the place for those who think loud noise and commotion make for a pleasant dining experience."

  • "The food was beautiful in its presentation, but my plate was very, very salty. The true flavors of the food was masked by the saltiness. We sat in a rear table next to an exit and the kitchen. The banging from the kitchen was very annoying. I cannot imagine why such banging was emanating form there. The dessert was the high point of the meal. It was a profiterole with a berry sorbet and chocolate syrup. It was divine."

  • "Menu did not explain all ingredients in food. Chicken breast should have been described as chicken breast filled with stuffing with garlic and onions. Chicken was nicely cooked; stuffing made it inedible for me. Crispy cod was not crisp at all because it was on top of soggy mashed potatoes. Service friendly and well meaning, not yet polished."

  • "This is a good French restaurant. They seem to have a web site that doesn't show up if you Google the restaurant name. They need to do something about that. The food is good (I wouldn't say perfect, however). Service was very good. It is expensive."

  • "Le Vieux Logis has lost the warmth that existed under prior ownership. While many of the selections on the new menu are enticing, the overall food quality and presentation are not. One may or may not hit upon a really good meal. The seafood dishes are consistently good, but the filet mignon tends to be tough and grisly, and the vegetables luke-warm, overcooked, and tasteless. Sauces are too heavy, and the general presentation of dishes is haphazard at best. I highly recommend, however, any of dessert selections (especially the baked Alaska) the only areas where this chef seems to excel. I come back mainly because of the wonderful staff who have worked at Le Vieux Logis for years."

  • "We drove all the way from Ashburn to celebrate a friend's birthday at Le Vieux Logis. Everything we ordered was great! From the escargots, to the duck confit to the lemon meringue dessert. We shall be back. The Chef is an absolute gem!"

  • "This was our 2nd visit to the restaurant in about a year's time. It is now on our list our list of "regulars." The place is small and quaint. The noise level is perfectly quiet with pleasant background music. We enjoyed the food and were pampered by the service. It was a perfectly satisfying evening."

  • "The food was outstanding. Our service started our very good, but then dropped off dramatically. I would have given this restaurant my highest rating, but for that fact."

  • "We dined here with our 12-year old granddaughter after seeing West Side Story at the National Theater. She enjoyed the play, but was most excited about getting to meet the actress who played Maria after the show. We had chosen Le Vieux Logis for dinner as it is on our way back to Frederick and we had not dined there in a number of years. It turned out to be the perfect place to "review" the play and decompress after the excitement of meeting and talking with "Maria." What a charming setting, what delicious food, served with grace & humor, and what a special ending to a very special day."

  • "We revisited this tried-and-true French restaurant after new management and chef took over. The crowded interior and hand-written checks are unchanged, but the well-trained and experienced new chef has new ideas. I tried the quenelles and found them sturdy rather than fluffy but tasty. The main course pike was delicious as were the veal medallions, although I though the caps of Parmesan cheese did little to enhance the flavor of the tenderloin slices. Both entrees came with stir-fried veggies, a la ratatouille plus mushrooms. Still a reliable choice for a nice dinner."

  • "Food was hit-or-miss. Gazpacho amuse-bouche: refreshing and tangy. Bread basket: boring. Escargots: good (garlicky and not overcooked). Scallop entree: heavy on risotto, short on scallops. Veal entree: not memorable. Three-chocolate terrine: good, but spectacular. The service was awful. A woman took our drink order, and said she would return to tell us the specials. She didn't. A man came and told us the specials and later took our order. When the woman recited the specials to the table next to us, we heard different things. Our cocktail glasses were taken without a question as to what else we wanted to drink. When my husband asked for a second, the server did not ask me if I wanted one. And the tables were far too close to each other."

  • "The Nouveau Vieux Logis lives up to the Tom Sietsema review and then some. All the dishes were delicious, including truly outstanding Dover Sole. Small touches, such as the bread and the side vegatables, were also great, a sign of a truly first-rate restaurant. A great place to go for traditional French food in a pleasant atmosphere."

  • "Excellent food as usual. Really nice atmosphere. "

  • "Le Vieux Logis is under new ownership (since January), but the food is better than ever: lamb chops were thick and perfectly prepared (we haven't seen chops like this for years!), as were the vegetables; the scallops were perfectly seared, and the softshell crab appetizer--almost a meal unto itself--was delicious and simply amazing. The chef is to be commended for putting out dishes that tease one's taste buds and then delights them with every bite. The ambiance remains warm even though some of the interesting decorations have changed. It is a joy to dine where the chef and hostess take such pride in delighting their customers. "

  • "The fare is nothing short of delicious, and the presentation is appealing. The service leaves nothing to be desired. The ambiance is "gentle" -- quiet enough to hear the words of your dining partners. All in all, a perfect experience."

  • "Everything about the meal we had deserves praise: Vieux Logis is under new management, but if anything it is even better than before. They offered an abundance of specials, but anything from the main menu is probably just as good. I can particularly recommend the duck confit. "

  • "This neighborhood institution in Bethesda has a new owner from France, who is also the chef. His wife works the front of the restaurant and together they've injected some new life into what was already an excellent local find under the previous management/owners. Prices are up slightly but so is the sophistication of the revised menu that now features more locally originated ingreedients. All the classic French dishes like coq au vin are still there. The Scandanavian items are gone and are replaced with local/French hybrids like sauteed Rockfish. "

  • "The mussels were outstanding; the coq au vin was overcooked, dry, and tough. I would try again, though, and might get the French onion soup and mussels. Other items seemed pretty good. Service was excellent. Maybe just a bad night for the coq au vin."

  • "Made a reservation about a month out and was given a lousy table right in front door next to a dirty cleaning closet. MD overwhelmed and not much use, thought table OK but offered another. The restaurant is rammed clearly because it Mothersday and they want to get as many covers as possible. Staff were under resourced and running from here to there, no time to be nice, food dumped, service timing was laughable, loooong waits between courses, 2 medium rare steaks came out almost raw. At the eventual end bill was wrong. Had many happy meals in this place but will not be going back."

  • "Vieux Logis was a good choice for our party of six: the table was small and the setting cozy. Although the restaurant was very noisy, we were able to hear each other. The food was very good--I had the scallops with an asparagus risotto. Each of our friends enjoyed his/her entree. We split a Baked Alaska for dessert, which was spectacular to behold and lent a special finish to the evening. "

  • "After seeing a recent review in The Washington Post, we made a special effort to have Sunday dinner at Le Vieux Logis. Ambience, food, service were excellent. The quiet, serene Old World atmosphere was restorative and reminded us what fine dining used to be like. Happily it is alive and well at Le Vieux Logis."

  • "We had a great time and a fantastic meal here on Saturday. We enjoyed the asparagus soup, the veal kidneys, and the roasted shrimp. Everything was just delicious! We had baked Alaska and chocolate terrine for dessert and both were excellent. The service was also excellent. The restaurant was busier than I've ever seen it - I think the word has gotten out about how good the new chef/owner is. This restaurant has made a huge change for the better. We look forward to returning soon."

  • "We thought the restaurant had closed. When we saw the Post review a few weeks ago, we knew it was still there, under new management The review was quite favorable too. The food, the service, the ambiance were just what we expected - excellent, maybe a tad better than before. The Baked Alaska was a real treat!"
