A word from Le Vieux Logis
Welcome to Le Vieux Logis!

A long time Bethesda favorite, Le Vieux Logis offers a newly inspired French menu and wine list, perfect for intimate dinners, cozy nights out and quiet conversation with friends and colleagues and please ask about our new lunch menu. The kitchen showcases flavorful French recipes that change slightly with the season and the availability of locally sourced ingredients. Authentically French, the restaurant has the feel of a bistro with a French country flavor. Joyful colors on crisp white tablecloths feel warm and yet curious.

I've eaten here twice and was very happy both times. I had the pork two ways the first time, which I thought was delicious. I had the scallops the second time that I didn't like as much, but both times we had good service, were greeted warmly by the hosts, and enjoyed the sort of small, old-fashioned, French bistro vibe. Because it's small and still has tablecloths and upholstered furniture -- an increasing rarity these days -- sound is absorbed which results in a noise level low enough that everyone at the table can hear each other.

Le Vieux Logis is in transition. The new owners have brightened it, dispensed with all the old ornaments and dustcatchers and the new chef has made the menu modern and attractive. The food is excellent and getting even better, the service is first-class and Vieux has become a destination for the combination.

Okay, so we had to wait for our table despite a reservation. But the restaurant comped us drinks and that made up for the wait. Based on reviews I ordered the Dover Sole and it was outstanding. Escargot very good. Husband had special terrine of the day and was very pleased. Veal for his main course. I really love crepes Suzette and was not disappointed. Really looking forward to going back and trying more things. Bread was wonderful crusty baguette.

My mom wanted to celebrate her 80th where they had escargot, checked the nearby LVL only to find the original website saying they sold. Luckily only ownership skipped a beat and the new owners have improved beyond expectations. Service excellent, food delicious, accommodating and attentive. Wine list one of the most reasonably priced lists I have ever encountered. A local gem, polished and reset perfectly.

This was our second dinner at Le Vieux Logis. There were many more diners this time. The food was good but the kitchen may have been understaffed: spending 1 hour and a half just for an appetizer and an entree wore my patience thin. We had been very satisfied the first time and this was all the more disappointing.

As always, Le Vieux Logis did not disappoint. My husband and I have been there on many occasions over the years to celebrate birthdays and anniversaries. We consider it our "go to" restaurant when we want something special - ambiance, food, service are always excellent. The valet parking is an added benefit.

It would be comforting to think that Le Vieux Logis was just having a bad Saturday night. Sadly, there was nothing to suggest that our experience was out of the ordinary. One could overlook the bland and outdated interior, and attribute it to a low-key local neighborhood atmosphere. And the upside of the inexplicable and interminable waiting was that the management gave us one of our desserts on the house. But, the truly incompetent service and gelatinous food defy explanation in a restaurant trying to re-establish itself with a new chef. The geriatric clientele must be made up of tolerant regulars.

Le Vieux Logis has always been a favorite of ours. So we were very, very disappointed when we ordered our old standby, calves liver, at our first trip back since the ownership change. What used to be an outstanding entree was overcooked (we had ordered medium rare), too buttery, and a much smaller portion than either this restaurant or its competitors traditionally serve. The accompanying vegetables and potatoes were well cooked. The dessert, an apple tart, was lovely, as was the bread. Maybe we were there on an off night, but the combination of the poorly cooked entree, the small portion size, the huge hike in menu prices, and the fact that the restaurant did not give Open Table points makes us scratch this restaurant off our list.

Vieux Logis is a Bethesda institution, with murals of French country life and a long history of good, rich French cooking. We particularly enjoyed our latest visit, with a caring and friendly proprietaire and staff. The food was delicious, from the coquilles St. Jacques to the baked Alaska.

3 of us shared 2 apps (charcuterie board with some 3 different pates as well as prosciutto and pickles and second app was frogs legs). Two of us had a confit de canard main while the other had app portion of softshell crab. They offered us a very nice little baked Alaska for dessert. We also shared a bottle of Cotes de Rhone. The food was good, the portions generous, and the tab was reasonable. Unfortunately, it isn't open for lunch as that softshell crab app would be perfect!

We tried this restaurant for the first time. The food was very good, but the service was poor. We needed to ask twice for a wine list and we ordered but were not served salads. Then.when the staff realized their mistake, they offered ONE complimentary dessert, which we declined, but they repeatedly came back interrupting our conversations to ask if we wanted dessert. The decor is dated but quaint, but the lighting is extremely bright; it seems like they have over-corrected for people who may have had difficulty reading the menu.

From outside, Le Vieux Logis looks as it has for thirty years, including the kitschy statute of a chef. It looks the same inside, too -- the kitsch continues. But the new owners have changed everythng else. Gone is the cutesy menu and the indifferent food. In its place a more classic French country menu, with a few local variations, prepared far more expertly. The roasted shrimp was fresh, perfectly cooked, and appealingly served as a kind of entree salad on a bed of fennel and other vegetables. The duck leg confit was flavorful and totally greaseless. These entrees from the regular menu were reasonably priced, but the specials seemed a bit expensive. The wines by the glass, on the other hand, were quite decent and generously sized.

My wife and I went there for her birthday. The food was very good, and they treated us to dessert. I thought that was very nice and thoughtful of them. On the improvement side, it felt a couple of times that we were forgotten. No one checked on us, we had to flag a waiter down to order drinks. The restaurant was not that crowded so I'm not sure if maybe they were short staffed? My steak came out MW, I had ordered Medium, but the maitre de took care of it right away. Overall a pleasant enough experience that I'm willing to try it again and see if service was just off that day. My wife very much enjoyed her trio of lamb and the baked alaska dessert was fantastic. I also appreciated that they pour a generous glass of wine. ;)

I have driven by this restaurant for years, and decided it was finally time to try it. It was bustling when we got there, which is always a good sign. The overall experience was fine, but the service was perfunctory. The food was good, but not memorable. There was one exception, in that one of my dining companions couldn't say enough about the French onion soup.

Wonderful food & the Chef's wife is such a welcoming manager! Tuesday & Wednesday's 3 course specials are delicious. Ironically, my friend & I were discussing where our group would have New Year's dinner this year. We had pretty much decided on Praline Bistro & Bakery...but as we ate through our courses we both agreed Le Vieux Logis was a contender...only to discover it was the same chef!

The restaurant has been in the same location for a very long time but has been revived recently. We had a reservation and were seated quickly. The menu has a good selection of items, many of which sounded good. I had a salmon with a potato crust which was very light. The service was not as good as it should have been considering the prices. We had to flag down the waiter just to order a bottle of wine and waited a while after that to order the meal. It was a bust Saturday night so perhaps they need more wait staff. The crowd is on the older side.

Le Vieux Logis improved its food significantly when the chef from Praline Bistro bought the restaurant earlier in 2014 and brought his cooking skills to this old style French restaurant. The selections are extensive with many traditional French choices. The preparation is careful. The dishes are made to the diner's taste. The food is superb. The location in Bethesda is convenient with complimentary valet parking as well as very close to public parking. The number of tables is limited requiring reservations. The service can be a little slow especially on a busy weekend evening, but the wait is worth it since the food is delicious. Overall, a vast improvement!

It seems that the place recently changed ownership, but do not be deterred by this. My Onion Soup Au Gratin was excellent, topped with melted gruyere cheese. I chose the duck a l'orange, prepared in the confit method. It fell off the bone and was delicious, garnished with orange sections, a delicate orange sauce (not too sweet) and some mixed greens. My colleague had the soft-shell crab, which he said was very good. I topped it off with a dessert of crème brulee, which had an apricot jam inside (very good). The sugar on top was perfect, not too thick like some I've had. All in all, great, authentic food. It was a little pricey, but worth it for a special dinner. The place was a bit small and cramped, but worth going to.

This was my wife's and my first visit in several years, and we were eager to see what changes the new owners had rendered. Ambience was nice. Much of the decorative clutter is gone, leaving a simpler look. Wait staff were excellent--attentive and friendly without being intrusive. My wife had the roasted shrimp, and called it "maybe the best I've had." I had the rockfish, which came in a striking presentation with neat rows of small andouille slices on top of the fish. This gave a little "bite" to the rockfish. Outstanding dish--and from locally caught fish. Overall, the new Vieux Logis is a bit on the pricey side, but we left thinking we got our money's worth. We'll be back!
