A word from Le Singe Vert
The Marais is reborn in Chelsea at Le Singe Vert, courtesy of the brass coat racks, long wooden bar, distressed mirrors and wicker chairs – all antiques owner Georges Forgeois sourced personally from his travels in France and North Africa.

In addition to the allure of the authentic surroundings, Le Singe Vert boasts a unique duality as both an energetic bistro and romantic hideaway treasured by a variety of guests: Singles grabbing a bite before a night on the town, families relishing a three-course meal and enamored couples enjoying a quiet evening in a secluded corner.

The menu of classic bistro fare appeals to this eclectic crowd, beginning with enticing offerings from the raw bar, to the outstanding steak frites, and of course the decadent chilled pot au chocolat for dessert. Although always festive, “Le Singe” is truly the place to be on holidays, especially for its legendary parties on Halloween, Valentine’s Day and Gay Pride.

Diner Reviews
  • "If you find yourself yearning for a classic French bistro--moules frites, profiteroles, oysters, onglet--you could do a lot worse than Le Singe Vert. It ticks all the boxes for decor (tiled floor, coat rack, cafe chairs, cozy banquettes), ambiance, and service, but every so often spins a predictable classic in an unpredictable way. Case in point: hanger steak, not with a clump of greens and fries (not that there's anything wrong with that), but with a marrow bone and a scoop of risotto. Salade verte not with the usual mesclun but with soft, meltingly verdant bibb lettuce. The bar was hopping the night I went and the clientele ran the gamut from twenty- to eighty-somethings, all basking in the unobtrusive service and tasty dishes. Go!"

  • "I go with friends now and many of them have become regulars. The food is always consistently good and you feel like you are in a French bistro. The staff is friendly and attentive but not overbearing. You never hear any complaints from other diners."

  • "Le Singe Vert is always a good neighborhood option in Chelsea. Food is always good but this time service was a bit lackluster. Had to ask for water 3 times. I also don't love that the tables are on top of each other."

  • "This place is great. It has a nice 'village' feel even though it's farther north on 7th Ave. Excellent food. Great wine list. And not terribly expensive considering how perfect everything was... Will definitely be back."

  • "My fiancé & I enjoy trying new things. We both enjoy ethnic food & being that we've never tried French I made reservations for dinner here prior to our show time at Gotham Comedy Club. We arrived & were seated immediately. The staff was very attentive (our water glasses were never less than 3/4 full). The food was outstanding. We'd never tried escargot but decided to order them for the full experience. They were amazing. The creme brûlée was rave-worthy. If we are ever looking for French food in the city. We will look to Le Singe Vert. *As a side note- the waiter only made eye-contact with me when explaining the specials. Apparently he does this at every table where there is 1 man & 1 woman. It was a little weird but not creepy."

  • "I am a regular client and should highlight that the service has really improved since the change of the waiters and especially with recruitment / the arrival of new french manager (Victor) who really nice and cute :-). On our arrival we were promptly welcome by Victor who directed us to our table. The service was quick and efficient The food is as always very good and the atmosphere is great. I will definitively go back and more often now."

  • "We arrived at the restaurant 15mins prior to our reservation and were lucky enough to have a cute table in the front nearest the window. The host was amazing and our server was great. Our drinks and food came out in just enough time for us to settle in and have conversation. We were pleased with the pre-fixe menu and since this wasn't my 1st time there, it felt like home. We left the restaurant feeling full, not stuffed and able to enjoy the rest of our night. We'll definitely be back again soon."

  • "Always fun...because of the wait staff....and always good.....because of the chef. Though recently their prices have gone up, the value is still there. Their specials are excellent...but ask for the price first. A delicious cheese souffle appetizer was $16 which I thought was a bit high for an appetizer."

  • "I've been going to Le Singe Vert for more than 12 years and it only gets better. Used to go for dinner. Now, I've added it as my favorite spot to lunch with friends. The salade Nicoise is prepared with delicious fresh tuna -- and, when I order it "bleu" that's how it arrives! Good selection of real bistro food for lunch, including a perfectly prepared cassoulet. The service is so attentive and, when it walk in, I'm greeted with "welcome back!" If I can be in Paris, I can pretend, can't i?"

  • "This is a neighborhood restaurant for me. When another restaurant unexpectedly cancelled my brunch reservation with 45 minutes to spare, I quickly got on opentable and found a table at Le Singe Vert. I have enjoyed Le Singe Vert many times for dinner (and what a great wine menu!), but never for brunch. I really enjoyed their brunch menu, and the delicious cocktails. We had somewhat of a mixed start with the amount of time it took to get our drinks, but that did not detract from the experience. Highly recommend."

  • "Pretty and cozy French bistro. Very good service. Some nice French music. Those are the positives . It was unpleasantly hot inside this night, but they said they couldn't control the heat. The bread was just ok. The rosé wine barely filled the bottom of the over-sized wine glass. The beet salad was fresh enough but lacked a decent dressing . Likewise, my roast chicken was a nice portion, moist and tender, but the sauce was too buttery and tasteless . My wife had the mussels in white wine which was a very small portion again. In addition, the broth was so salty, she couldn't even dip the bread in at the end of the meal.. Needless to say, we won't be back. We have a much better option in the same price range in Murray Hill."

  • "I really enjoyed dining at Le Singe Vert. I felt very comfortable. Has a European feeling. I would go there again especially when in the area, 20th and 7th Avenue."

  • "Overall Le Singe Vert was fine, but not great, as the food came up a little shy of expectations given the price (many entrees $30+). Service was great, ambiance very nice, wine list good, but both my girlfriend and I were underwhelmed by our entrees. My braised lamb shank was a little dry and the vegetables under cooked. My girlfriends steak tartare tasted a little off to her."

  • "An authentic Parisian bistro from the French servers to the typical choices -- steak tartare with frites, salade nicoise, raie in brown butter with capers. And the wines are just those you would get in Paris to go with theses meals. Good French bread, not fake and real butter! One of my favorite go to places for lunch or dinner."

  • "We came at singe vert, as usual , for dinner . A perfect Monday night, atmosphere very cozy and romantic , the band in the restaurant was a big plus ! We tried the Beaujolais prix fixe ... AMAZING!!! The manager recommended to have ' Le coq au vin '. It was perfect !!! The wine also !! We will come back for sure ..."

  • "With a real French waiter and good French style food plus salads and lighter fare, this place is vaut le voyage. I've never been in the evening but at lunch time it is pleasantly full without being crowded and it's QUIET, which is so hard to find these days! Nice service, nice atmosphere, an all round good experience. I took a friend there who lives in Paris and he said the filet mignon he had was as good as at home, so that's high praise!"

  • "We had an open table reservation and were made to wait 45 minutes past the reservation time. Food was also subpar given price tag. Will not return."

  • "A real French bistro -- the foo, the wine, the service, the ambience. Have been coming here for over 10 years and I can always rely on it. The salade nicoise was as it should be with tuna perfectly cooked. For dinner I usually get the skate, my favorite, and it is always the same -- almost like Groundhog Day! I walked in before they opened and instead of being told to wait or come back, I was shown to my table, offered water and made to feel welcome warmly! What a plaisir!!"

  • "Although their web site says they serve until midnight and they accepted a reservation for 11:15pm......the kitchen closes week nights at 11pm. ...it's not a fine dining experience when waiters are setting the room for the next day and the bar is closing down. Not a good night of dining when you are rushed. They did call my home at 7pm to tell me they close early....but I was out for the evening."

  • "Good food, well prepared Parisian/French classics. We had a nice country pate at the bar and then a great steak frites -- cooked perfectly -- and wonderful cassoulet. Warm service without being cloying. A little pricey -- my only complaint!"

  • "The Steak Tartare was amongst the best I've had in a while. I had the smaller portion, and it could have easily been an entry size. I was excited to order the mussels, but I was disappointed by their size - they were very small inside the shell. The broth was delicious. Great wine list and very nice ambience - it was chily outside, but felt very warm and cozy inside. Can't wait to go again!"

  • "What a find - French food on the way to the Irish Rep. I am just back from Paris and this is really an authentic bistro. I would travel downtown to go again. Bon!"

  • "It was a weekday night and I met my friends after dance rehearsal. We had a table reserved and it was the perfect spot for catching up over a glass of wine, grilled trout and a shrimp over risotto dish which was beautifully arranged. The wait staff were friendly and not intrusive. Two of my friends had just arrived from Paris and they said the food was as if they were still on the Champs Elysses! We are definitely going back!!!"

  • "I've eaten here over a half dozen times in the past year and the food was consistently good. Unfortunately this time the food was just mediocre. The escargots had no taste and the steak tartare was lumpy and too salty. Oh well, every kitchen has an off night, but I hope the next time I go the food will be as good as it used to be."

  • "I have been dining at this restaurant since I moved into the neighborhood in 2006. I have always enjoyed the food and ambience. Tonight I was very disappointed with the entitled attitude of the host who dismissed my complaints and told me that I was not a regular and was therefore irrelevant. Shame on you Le Singe Vert for your lack of consideration of loyal diners."
