A word from Le Singe Vert
The Marais is reborn in Chelsea at Le Singe Vert, courtesy of the brass coat racks, long wooden bar, distressed mirrors and wicker chairs – all antiques owner Georges Forgeois sourced personally from his travels in France and North Africa.

In addition to the allure of the authentic surroundings, Le Singe Vert boasts a unique duality as both an energetic bistro and romantic hideaway treasured by a variety of guests: Singles grabbing a bite before a night on the town, families relishing a three-course meal and enamored couples enjoying a quiet evening in a secluded corner.

The menu of classic bistro fare appeals to this eclectic crowd, beginning with enticing offerings from the raw bar, to the outstanding steak frites, and of course the decadent chilled pot au chocolat for dessert. Although always festive, “Le Singe” is truly the place to be on holidays, especially for its legendary parties on Halloween, Valentine’s Day and Gay Pride.

Diner Reviews
  • "We were really struck at the similarities between Le Singe Vert, and a little place in Quebec City we happened upon during a previous vacation. The food is classic French: Duck Confit, Steak Frites, etc.. The wine list is short, but competent. The waitstaff didn't really know their wines but there was little to decide upon. After dinner cognac selection was great, but I'd recommend to the restaurant owner they shoud add a Madeira to the list to accompany the cheese plate. Overall a terrific evening was had by all and my only regret is that we visited too late in the season to get foie gras, which I am sure would have been fabulous. We already have decided we'll return at our earliest opportunity."

  • "Solid French fare and good neighborhood spot. The burger, steak tartare, and tuna tartare were particularly good. Good food, service, and ambience. A bit expensive, but recommended overall."

  • "This is the second time we've dined here and the whole experience brings you to Paris! The food is delicious and authentic. The service is friendly and professional."

  • "I've always had great food here. The escargot is amazing. The absolute best Steak Tartar in the city, and the steak frites are to die for."

  • "I used to live un the area and went there many times as the food was good and it was fun. Went there yesterday and the food was inedible. Don't waste time and money, go somewhere else."

  • "Love this bistro -- so Parisian. Even the servers speak French! As usual, I ordered the Salade Nicoise and the tuna came just as I requested -- rare. The muscadet is perfect with the salad and with any fish dish. Wonderful wait staff -- all of them. I always go for lunch when I'm in the neighborhood. And, of course, for dinner as well."

  • "Could not understand one word the server said. Food was great!"

  • "An otherwise wonderful lunch in a low key Parisian style bistro was marred by underperforming AC."

  • "We went for lunch, nice outdoor seating, very French. I ordered lunch special $18 ( appetizer + entree ). Food was very good and came in decent portion, which is a surprise to me. Will definitely go back again."

  • "Enjoyed brunch on a beautiful day in New York. Sitting outside is lovely. The subway and the street makes it a bit noisy at times but you can zone it out. The parisienne omlette was divine."

  • "Authentic bistro food. Had the steak frites. Perfect. The frites were double-fried and crisp. Asked for mustard instead of catsup and it was the spicier French Dijon as it should be. Meat was perfectly cooked -- rare but not "bleu" as I requested. And for dessert, nothing beats the carmelized apple tart with vanilla ice cream. What Gould be better!!"

  • "Still the best Paris bistro for my money. Had my favorite -- skate in brown butter with lemons and capers -- and, of course, mashed potatoes! Delicious as usual. The apple tarte with vanilla ice cream was perfect -- carmelized and warm. Their muscadet is very good and affordable. A perfect accompaniement to the tuna tartare and the skate."

  • "It gets better every time, the ideal French Café. Very lively, great menu, thank you for the perfect mix!"

  • "really good French basics - salade nicoise, ceased salad, steak frites. Nothing super special - not a place to seek out for grand special occasions but if you need lunch in that area for family or clients - it hits the spot. And, it actually reminded me a little of places we'd eaten at in paris... same things on the menu, same basic quality of food, same thoughtful but slightly shabby ambience. enjoy."

  • "Their are similar restaurants in NYC that are more buttoned up with their service and hospitality. The food is very good."

  • "Great meal, although the creme brule wasn't so good. Is questionable as to why we have to pay an extra $2 just to have a sauce with my steak. That comes as standard elsewhere. Inspite of this, we enjoyed our meal in our regular hangout. "

  • "This restaurant is in my neighborhood and I really want to love it but it is just too expensive for what you get. It has the ambiance of a great neighborhood restaurant and the prices of high-end New York restaurant. When I go I find the both the service and the food pretty good. But $36 for Steak Frites and few wine options under $50 prohibits me from stopping by for a quick bite."

  • "It was mother's day and they were kind to give out a rose to the Mom. They were a little slow at seating us, seemed a little disorganized and we did have a reservation. My dish was fine- a salad with fresh tuan . My boyfriend did not love his eggs. They looked fine to me but he wasn't entirely happy. Coffee was great. Our first time there was better ..."

  • "We had short ribs. It was a special and was much more fat than meat. Very disappointed in them. Our friends had tuna and Branzino and both were delicious. Liked the place, very cosy and comfortable. Would go back but would order something else"

  • "I would definitely come back to this restaurant. I wanted to sit by the window but the hostess warned me that live music was starting nearby in 30 minutes and I may not be happy with the noise level. That is because I requested a quiet table in my reservation. I decided to take a chance because the seating in the restaurant seemed a little tight and at least I would not feel sandwiched in at the table by the window. I did really appreciate the warning however! Very thoughtful. As it turned out, the music was wonderful and not at all overwhelmingly loud. The singer had a really amazing voice. It really added the enjoyment of my dinner and visit with a very good old friend. Food was also very good! Great atmosphere and attentive service."

  • "This is one of those go to restaurants that never disappoints. The onion soup and escargots are terrific and the Skate is reliable favorite. It feels like a French Bistro and in warm weather (if we ever have any again) it is great to sit outside or just inside when they open the doors. Brought friends for the first time who travel frequently to Paris and they loved it as well."

  • "My favorite bistro in NYC! For lunch or dinner, Le Singe Vert is a perfect dining place for a Francophile! For lunch the Salade Nicoise and for dinner the skate in brown butter with capers! What could be better. A glass or two of Muscadet with either -- good and reasonably priced. The service is always pleasant -- even when the bistro is packed on a weekend evening. The frisee salad is a good second choice for lunch -- loads of lardons!"

  • "If you find yourself yearning for a classic French bistro--moules frites, profiteroles, oysters, onglet--you could do a lot worse than Le Singe Vert. It ticks all the boxes for decor (tiled floor, coat rack, cafe chairs, cozy banquettes), ambiance, and service, but every so often spins a predictable classic in an unpredictable way. Case in point: hanger steak, not with a clump of greens and fries (not that there's anything wrong with that), but with a marrow bone and a scoop of risotto. Salade verte not with the usual mesclun but with soft, meltingly verdant bibb lettuce. The bar was hopping the night I went and the clientele ran the gamut from twenty- to eighty-somethings, all basking in the unobtrusive service and tasty dishes. Go!"

  • "Normally we have had excellent service here (and we have eaten here dozens of times). This time, however, was a mess. The waitress clearly had forgotten to put the order in for my food. My very simple salad and side vegetable dishes arrived over an hour after my two lunch companions had eaten their entrees. We eat here all the time, and love Singe Vert. This was clearly an aberration that we hope will not happen again."

  • "This place is great. It has a nice 'village' feel even though it's farther north on 7th Ave. Excellent food. Great wine list. And not terribly expensive considering how perfect everything was... Will definitely be back."

  • "Le Singe Vert is always a good neighborhood option in Chelsea. Food is always good but this time service was a bit lackluster. Had to ask for water 3 times. I also don't love that the tables are on top of each other."

  • "My fiancé & I enjoy trying new things. We both enjoy ethnic food & being that we've never tried French I made reservations for dinner here prior to our show time at Gotham Comedy Club. We arrived & were seated immediately. The staff was very attentive (our water glasses were never less than 3/4 full). The food was outstanding. We'd never tried escargot but decided to order them for the full experience. They were amazing. The creme brûlée was rave-worthy. If we are ever looking for French food in the city. We will look to Le Singe Vert. *As a side note- the waiter only made eye-contact with me when explaining the specials. Apparently he does this at every table where there is 1 man & 1 woman. It was a little weird but not creepy."

  • "We arrived at the restaurant 15mins prior to our reservation and were lucky enough to have a cute table in the front nearest the window. The host was amazing and our server was great. Our drinks and food came out in just enough time for us to settle in and have conversation. We were pleased with the pre-fixe menu and since this wasn't my 1st time there, it felt like home. We left the restaurant feeling full, not stuffed and able to enjoy the rest of our night. We'll definitely be back again soon."

  • "Always fun...because of the wait staff....and always good.....because of the chef. Though recently their prices have gone up, the value is still there. Their specials are excellent...but ask for the price first. A delicious cheese souffle appetizer was $16 which I thought was a bit high for an appetizer."
