Diner Reviews
  • "We have eaten here for lunch or dinner, before or after theater for many years and the experience has always been enjoyable."

  • "This is a great restaurant for before or after a broadway play. It is right in the middle of everything and I have never been disappointed with the food. It is a great value."

  • "This restaurant was recommended as a great place for lunch before the theater. Their prix fixe was amazing - $25 - especially for New York City. Appetizer, Entree and Dessert. The choices for each course were numerous and outstanding. Enough variety to satisfy any special diets. Wait staff and management were gracious and the service was outstanding. I would return the next time we need a great restaurant in the theater district."

  • "Le Rivage was a perfect place for date night with my girlfriend! It is just two blocks away from Time Square and right around the corner from countless broadway shows. Yet, it is on a quiet street that seems like it's out of a book. The service was excellent and the food came out very quickly. The staff is clearly French and will give you that "French Vibe" you're probably looking for. I got the tilapia and my girlfriend got the veal. Their price fix menu made getting authentic French food worthwhile. It won't be the last time I eat at Le Rivage"

  • "Diners with theatre tickets will find reasonably priced, great food, served by a talented and charming staff in a superb location to the theatre district. Always buzzing during dinner, by 7:30 the activity level will have dropped to almost nothing. Short, simple menu that includes a country pate that is tough to beat! Arrive by 6:00 to enjoy a relaxed pace for your meal and still make an 8:00 PM curtain."

  • "I've been eating at this restaurant for 10 years. The service and food are impeccable. The owners have a very high standard. There are excellent price fix menus and wine selections. I always go here on special occasions. It has never let me down."

  • "The pre-theater dinner for $39 is outstanding. A substantial number of choices for appetizer, entree and dessert, with a few items carrying a surcharge. Food is excellent and the service is outstanding."

  • "We were in NY for a show at birdland and we were looking for something a little different. We are very happy we found Le Rivage. The French Onion soup was wonderful followed by the best Calfs Liver I have ever ate topped off with an amazing bread pudding all for $39. My son who is a picky eater loved the Lobster bisque and the Beef Bourgeois followed by the Creme Brulee. if you are looking for a great homestyle French meal at a resonable price Le Rivage is the place."

  • "Either lunch or dinner is consistently delicious. The fixed price menus for both lunch and dinner are an excellent deal. Wait staff will ensure you get to dinner on time. Never disappointed dining here."

  • "We had a lovely prix-fix dinner before a show. Service was attentive and friendly. For a prix-fix meal, the food was surprisingly good."

  • "The appetizer artichokes were good but over sauced. The vinegar in the dressing was unusually raw. The prosciutto and melon was quite good. The sof shell crabs were soggy, not crisp, and also the garlic sauce was dark browm, unappealing, and overpowered the crab. The shrimp also had a unappealing brown sauce. Deserts were pretty good, an okay chocolate mousse, a verey nice bread pudding and a good enough peach melba with ice cream. Service was prompt and efficient and got us to the theater on time, and the location on theatere row was excellent. Restaurant ambience was pleasant, below ground, not too noisy, and staff was very good. Overall disappointing."

  • "The food was very good. My complaint about French restaurants is that the portions are too small. But Rivage has large portions, similar to other restaurants; as usual we had to take food home. The service was good, nothing about it was outstanding. Like all the restaurants on Restaurant Row, the room is small and they pack as many tables into it as they can, making it crowded and hard to get around without squeezing past chairs. Overall, a three star experience compared to other restaurants in Manhattan."

  • "A friend and I had lunch at Le Rivage, prior to a Wednesday matinée. I arrived early and had a lovely French conversation with the welcoming hostess and a refreshing tea. By noon the restaurant was packed. Le Rivage attracts seniors, despite uncomfortable seating and the hot bathroom downstairs. I love all the charming paintings of southern France throughout. The prix fixe menu offers genuine French food for only $25. My friend found the potato leek soup boring, and I didn’t think the cantaloupe (with prosciutto) was ripe; but her duck à l’orange was fabulous, and I enjoyed the seafood crêpe, a special of the day. I’m amazed at how well the waitresses navigate the restaurant and how pleasant they all are. I know I’ll return."

  • "I've been to other restaurants on Restaurant Row with prix fixe menus. Value was good for $39 (then add in tip & glass of wine) and menu had extensive offerings for each course. Nice crisp artichoke salad to start, trout almondine with asparagus & roasted potatoes and a poached pear ice cream dessert. It was not anything outstanding but good. Waitress was very attentive (we had to chase her down for the bill in order to make our show) and owner (I think) came out to see that everything was OK...nice touch. Pretty artwork on the walls and fresh flowers on the tables. It just didn't wow me...I'd probably try elsewhere next time in NYC Theater District."

  • "We just enjoyed our fourth pre-theater dinner at le Rivage. On a rainy Thursday, with a 7:00 curtain, we were concerned that the staff would rush us through dinner. Not so: They are so skilled at this, that--even though their pre-fixe, pre-theater menu is extensive and you enjoy appetizer, entree, and dessert, their gracious European staff ease you through your meal comfortably with time to spare. Please note: This is a "Business-casual" restaurant for grown-ups or articulate teens. But, if you enjoy good food, good service, and good conversation in a classic NY brownstone restaurant, book today!"

  • "Unfortunately, the decor was about all we liked. The server was okay. Not rude by any means, but not real attentive either. The lobster bisque was cold and pretty thin. The onion soup was alright. The special homemade pasta was good, but the sauce was lacking a bit. The plating on the lamb was boring. The chops were scraggly and the potatoes were stiff and had randomly placed bits of peppers on them. The crème brûlée was absolutely disgusting. It looked and tasted like scrambled eggs. We could only manage one bite. Also, the wine list was much smaller than advertised. We were surrounded by senior citizens the entire time. I believe we were the youngest couple in the place. It was odd and un-romantic and seems to be incredibly out-dated."

  • "This adorable French restaurant was exactly what I was looking for an intimate celebration of my mother's birthday. The owners/operators were personable and attended to all of our needs. I cannot say enough good things about this restaurant. Simply stating that it was fabulous in all areas doesn't seem to do it justice."

  • "Le Rivage is convenient to the theater district and economical with good food. My friends and I went for lunch before the theater and our waitress was French and very helpful and efficient. She answered any questions we had about the menu. The menu is prix fix with app, entree and coffee and dessert. The food is French and lots of choices for lunch. I had a special which was a seafood crepe and it was very good. My friends all liked their meals too. I had a salad for the first course and it was just ok. The desserts were very good. I would recommend this restaurant for a nice lunch before a show."

  • "I took my granddaughter here for what I thought would be a French treat before matinee. She ordered the duck - which she has had many times and loves. I ordered the special pasta bolognese (I know, this is a French restaurant!) The pasta was pasty and clumpy - sauce was o.k though. I didn't eat much of it and the waitress asked if I liked it or not. I said the pasta was overcooked! To me it was inedible. My granddaughter ate all of the duck, said it was o.k. and we went to the show. By the end of the matinee, she was not feeling well and proceeded to have an upset stomach on the way back to NJ. Although the place was busy with matinee goers - I will not return to the restaurant!"

  • "Le Rivage never disappoints. The food is consistently excellent and when you walk into the restaurant, it feels like one of the last "old time New York" settings in the city."

  • "The Pre-Fix lunch Menu offers so many choices - and the food itself is delicious. We keep going back so we can try all of the delicious entree's. Also, the desserts are so enticing. You don't know what to choose. A great buy at an afforable cost. The waitresses are very prompt and very cordial to the clients. Everyone should try this reataurant at least once. I assure you, you will want to come back. "

  • "Le Rivage is our favorite Theater District restaurant. The food is always delicious and the service is excellent. Their price fixed pre-theater menu offers a big selection and is moderately priced with generous portions. I strongly recommend Le Rivage on Restaurant Row."

  • "We love to come to NYC for shows and we always dine at Le Rivage. This Memorial week end, it poured rain between shows and we were grateful we had a reservation. The service is always splendid and the food keeps getting better. I was afraid I wouldn't care for the new salmon preparation- I love to have it poached, but this was cooked to order and it was wonderful. Also, no one does escargot better than Le Rivage. The wine selection is outstanding- another wonderful meal!"
