Diner Reviews
  • "I had the 7 course Chef Tasting Menu and every course was amazing! I can't wait to visit Portland again, which will now always include a stop at Le Pigeon!"

  • "What more could I say? The food was extremely delicious and the service was good to excellent. The only draw back was the shared table setting. This is fine under most occasions but my wife and I were expecting more privacy. Place is good for special occasions. We will dine there again."

  • "The food creations by the chef are awesome! Also enjoyed the ambience and the wine list! Definitely want to visit again when in Portland!"

  • "We have been to Le Pigeon several times, and as always, excellent food, service and libations. Pure magic, pure artistry and the freshest ingredients anywhere. Will be going back again and again."

  • "We saw Le Pigeon on a Portland top restaurants list, saw the chef won some James Beard award, so we thought about giving it a try. We had a reservation, but things ran long so we got in a few minutes late, nothing a couple of glasses of good wine can't help. The food was purely amazing and the wait staff was polite."

  • "Our meal began with perfect French bread and salted butter - a good sign. We ordered a 2007 Bandol at the recommendation of our excellent waiter, and the velvety feel of it and the rich earthy flavors were gorgeous. It went very well with our first course, the sublime pork belly appetizer with tomatillos and popcorn shrimp. That dish was the star of the night, and possibly one of the best I've tasted in a long while -- a masterful blend of textures and tastes. For our main courses, we shared the rabbit with a corn confit (not sure how it's worded on the menu), and the beef cheeks bourguignon. Both were very good, though a little less purslane in the beef would have been better. Amazing peach tart with ginger ice cream and great decaf. Bon!"

  • "After years of wanting to try famous foodie spot I overcame my objection to communal seating for special birthday dinner. We chose not to sit at the bar instead for the end spot of a communal table, since we enjoy conversation more than watching cooks. Appetizers were outstanding, service attentive, and knowledgeable. Entree's, mine in particular were only so so, to have rabbit served deep fried was a first and certainly a last for me, despite a lovely sauce, I did not inquire about my companions dish but no comment was made implying it was not outstanding. Conclusion: despite all the hoopla this is an overrated spot, at least based on one visit and for the price it is unlikely that I will try it again, too many fine choices in Portland."

  • "Good food but very expensive left hungry small portions deserts are average"

  • "Amazing food menu, and notable wine list. The French-inspired cuisine did not disappoint. Menu is a big on the $$ side, but WELL WORTH Every cent. Quality food and exquisite preparation makes LePigeon a MUST for your visit to Portland."

  • "This restaurant was recommended to us by a friend and Le Pigeon certainly did not dissapoint. We tried the tasting menu with wine pairings, every item was well matched and creative, they kept in mind our requests to ensure we were able to have one of the menu items we really desired. The wait staff was courteous and helpful and very well informed on the food being served. We had a wonderful time here, each dish was so delicious we wanted to lick our plates clean, especially the foie gras salted caramel dessert. Just a note, the venue is small so the seating is communal. Be aware there will be very little dinner conversation privacy. We arrived for a 10pm seating, so we were able to sit alone for part of our meal."

  • "Very unique, wonderfully layered dish choices on the menu. Had the cilantro crusted albacore tuna as an appetizer, and foie-gras chorizo stuffed quail as the main. Definitely a bit overpriced for the tuna (only two pieces along with garnishing for 18$ ) but for the quality it was worth it. The quail was a bit overdone, but still impressed with the fois gras chorizo stuffing (never had anything similar in my life). The restaurant itself is intimate with an open kitchen. Sit at the bar and watch the masters at work right in front of you! Our waitress left a little to be desired, and recommended an expensive Cabernet that was disappointing for one of our tables. (The other table received a far cheaper Pinot which blew the Cab out of the water)"

  • "It doesn't really matter what you order here, there are no misses on the menu and this is why it is one of Portland's more celebrated food destinations. Whether you view community tables as a draw back or not, it would do you well to overcome your hesitation, and belly up to the bar, where you can loose yourself in the busy kitchen activities and watch how love affairs with food begin. If you are sitting down at the table you'll find the staff trying hard to make your experience with service stand up to the reputation of the dishes."

  • "Along with Morimoto in New York, this counts as one of my best all-time meals. Lots of wonderful layered flavours and beautiful plates. I had the rabbit, which was unbelievably succulent. A really great meal. I recommend sitting at the bar so you can watch the chefs work."

  • "We had 3 friends visiting from the LA area and we took them to one of our favorites: Le Pigeon. The food was wonderful as always. Good wine list with plenty of reasonably priced options."

  • "We ordered the five course tasting menu. It took the server a few minutes to describe each dish. All the individual components of each melded together to become greater than the sum of their formidable parts. A truly wonderful dining experience."

  • "The communal dining arrangement is a challenge with seating that can lock you into a small space, noisy surroundings and a terrible playlist that adds to the ordeal. I wouldn't go back again. Little Bird, it's affiliated restaurant, offers a much better dining experience."

  • "Read great reviews about Le Pigeon and was expecting an amazing experience, Le Pigeon did not disappoint. If you can, sit at the chefs table (counter) where you can watch the action and talk to the chefs. Everything we ate was wonderful and everything we watched go out of the kitchen made us wish we could have eaten more! Loved it. Will definitely be back next time we are in Portland."

  • "Chef Rucker's classical french cuisine has an edgy inflection and in-your-face attitude. The menu reflects the love of ingredients, conventional and unusual alike. The dishes are complex, but unified. The menu planning is creative and the execution disciplined. The servers and staff all knew their stuff, from menu and prep details to wine pairings and restaurant history. You can tell that everyone involved at Le Pigeon loves food and takes their job seriously, while at the same time delivering a very enjoyable food experience."

  • "We have been looking forward to dining at Le Pigeon for a while now and the experience did not disappoint. Service was excellent, the food was interesting and delicious. It is a smaller space with community tables and while this does foster conversations with other guests it precludes having intimate conversations and increases the overall noise level."

  • "For the last 7 years, Le Pigeon has been my "take the out of town guests for a nice dinner" restaurant and each time, my guests are never disappointed. I keep thinking the quality of the food will slip or the service will be abysmal because of the restaurant's stature but they never coast on their reputation alone. The portions are generous and the flavours are very robust. Reservations are for communal tables and at times, the noise level can make conversation difficult. It seems that the menu has opened up to include vegetarian items but it is not heavily marked with asterisks and crosses indicating vegan, vegetarian, or gluten-free so it might be best to ask the server if it's a concern. Overall, I wonderfully delicious experience"

  • "Had the 7 course tasting menu with the "Reserve" wine pairing. Super way to try something new, the wines were spot on for each dish. Knowledgeable, friendly staff, super nice. Only had two issues, the excessive amount of time between the 2nd and 3rd and 4th courses and the "foie gras" profiterole. I the profiterole just seemed like someone wanted to put two trending items together (salted caramel and foie gras). Perhaps something more focused would be in order."

  • "Overall the meal was great but appetizer portion was small for sharing. Salad was awesome, one dinner was a port chop and I would not recommend it again. It was tough and the diner took it home for the dog. The fish was a small portion but the diner liked it, the Beef Cheeks were awesome, best thing on the menu. There are other places I would recommend at these prices."

  • "Le Pigeon has a national reputation and it is worth a visit just to see what all the hoopla is about. Yes, the foie gras profiteroles are both innovative and delectable, but there are other items on the frequently updated menu worth writing home about. We tried two moderately priced wines and, while very different, would order either of them again on another visit. We all enjoyed the energy of the restaurant and the service was very good."

  • "The foie gras appetizer was really really good, but everything else was just okay, not the amazing flavors and excitement we were hoping for. And especially not at these prices. We were a party of four and shared appetizers and dessert and a moderately priced ($50) bottle of wine and the bill came to $260 before tip! I guess for me there is just so much better food in Portland that isn't so over the top. I've been to Little Bird and it's better!!"

  • "We loved the pigeon appetizer. It was cooked perfectly and paired with unique items that blended and spiced up the dish. One of our favs!"

  • "I can't say much else besides that this was one of the best meals of my life. So good in fact, that my fiance and I made a reservation for the next time we would be eating there WHILE we were still there eating! So, so outstanding. Also, sit at the bar if you get a chance and watch the cooking magic happen right before your eyes! These folks are pros!"

  • "Seating is communal (which I enjoy) and they don't have a full bar (so no cocktails, just beer and wine). I ordered the butter lettuce, which was simple but good. Next was the pork chop which was absolutely delicious, with the taste of apricot, endive and goat cheese mingling very well. Why then did I only give Le Pigeon a 3 for food? My husband had the fried gnocchi and they were a complete disaster. He was actually physically ill that night. I was so disappointed because I really wanted to love this resto - the people sitting next to us got the tasting menu and everything looked divine. In the end, though, I believe a restaurant of this caliber should be proud of everything it serves and so those gnocchi should just NOT be on the menu!"

  • "Not a place to be missed if visiting Portland! it is simply the most delightful course menu I have had in a long time. Every dish was enjoyable. The pigeon was delicious! the foie gras ice cream profiterole was to die for. Least favorite dish was the salmon (a bit salty for me, but my hubs liked it). Sitting at the bar is super fun to watch all the kitchen action. It is a small place so best to make reservations for sure. Our only regret is getting the 5 course menu instead of the 7 course menu because we simply couldn't get enough of this delicious food! Would return to Portland just to eat here. LOVE LOVE LOVE"

  • "I brought my 16 year old grandson here to celebrate the end of the school year and acknowledge his four years of French. It was perfect! The communal tables give a casual feeling, but there's nothing casual about the sauces and foi gras-it's precise perfection! The appetizers seemed even more complex and creative than the entrees, so definitely don't skimp and jump straight to the lovely entrees. At another table we saw a hamburger ($14.00 on menu) served so there truly is something divine for every budget. p.s. Grandson was blown away!!!!"

  • "Almost everything about LePigeon was nice except the second entree we ordered, the pork shoulder. Which was very very tough and should have been prepared with more care ... the issue was not that I am being picky ... but that if I am going to pay as much as LePigeon charges the meal should be nearly perfect and because of that plate it was not. The squab was fantastic ... that must be noted ..."

  • "This is the second time I've been here and the experience is hard to beat. The food is amazing and a little goes a long way. No need for huge portions because saving some room for dessert is worth it!"

  • "My son and I enjoyed dinner at Le Pigeon. We were there to celebrate his college graduation. The service was warm and friendly, yet unobtrusive. The décor is lovely; like stepping into someone's home. We enjoyed a beautiful 7-course meal, although I'm certain we were served 8 or 9 plates. Every dish was almost too beautiful to eat. However, we savored every bite from every plate. The use of fresh herbs and unusual combinations of fresh ingredients left such a pleasant memory on the tongue, we are still talking about our fabulous meal two days later! Each course effortlessly led to the next with flavors complementing and contrasting at every taste. We are already planning and saving for our next experience at Le Pigeon!"

  • "Great urban place, sitting next to other people at long tables or at the bar makes you feel cozy and at home. Outstanding interior. Food is great but the meat courses very stuffy and rich. Would always visit it again when staying in Portland."

  • "Reservations is highly recommended, weeks in advance if you want to chose your dining time. The smaller the party, the easier you can get a reservation. This place is tiny! We ordered everything that had foie gras. Had the pork and fish for dinner. All the dishes were prepared perfectly. Our favorite was the Best pork we have ever had!"

  • "Good food but the restaurant needs a redesign inside. The music was terrible and the staff did not work well in the small space. Too bad because the food is good. I'd recommend Beast instead- similiar fare and better ambiance and service."

  • "The atmosphere was great and the space was beautiful! The food was pretty good. My complaint would be that we got the tasting menu and everything we got was on the regular menu. We've done several tasting menus and it has always been something special that isn't available otherwise."
