  • "When I go out to eat, I hope to find places that can make me something I typically would/could not make myself. Le Pigeon did exactly that. Their food was unique, fresh, and impeccably prepared with the best sauces I've ever had. Actually, I think the meal was the best I've ever had and the service was outstanding as well. My only critique, which isn't a big enough deal to dock them a star, is that I couldn't drink my wine pairings fast enough before they brought out the next course. Overall, though, a really great experience."

  • "At the recommendation of our adult children, we ate at the bar. What a wonderfully interactive experience it was! We watched as the chefs prepared entrees and appetizers right in front of us, talked to them when they had a moment between tasks, and were constantly enthralled by their skills and multi-tasking abilities. Oh yes, the food was outta-sight great and the wines deserved (and held) our attention. Summary: a fine-dining experience with a friendly and comfortable neighborhood attitude."

  • "The food was fantastic, I just can't say how exquisite the food was. The flavors just flowed so seamlessly into each other, it was simply amazing. Just FYI, they do use communal tables and it can get fairly loud, so if you can go at 5 it is much more cozy. Also, the wine pairings are superb, unless you are great with wine or only like certain types, I would strongly suggest using the wine pairings. I have found such wonderful wines which I would never would have selected otherwise."

  • "We were lucky enough to snag a reso to this popular Portland restaurant after several recommendations from friends in Vancouver BC. The two of us shared a long table with 4 others but it was comfortable and not intrusive. Cozy space. Fois gras appetizer, pork and duck confit mains, fois gras profiteroles dessert. Appy was amazing and bursting with a wonderful assortment of balanced flavours. Pork was melt in your mouth tender. Duck confit was succulent but not overly rich which was perfect. If anything, I thought the profiteroles were a bit disappointing. I would have liked them to be lighter. The creampuff was quite firm since it was still cold and the inside cream was more like a fois gras ice cream texture. Interesting though!"

  • "We had to return after eating here 3 years ago. This time we brought 2 friends, one of whom declared that this was the best restaurant he'd ever been to. It's certainly up there on my list too. My girlfriend had been talking about the pot roast (beef cheeks?) all this time, so she had it again and was just as thrilled this time. The highlight for me was the foie gras ice cream, salted caramel profiterole that was unlike any dessert I have ever had: unexpected flavors and really delicious. The service was terrific too. It's a small place, a real gem, so make reservations early."

We ordered the chef tasting menu for 2- 5 courses with a 2 part dessert, and literally everything was amazing. The flavors and attention to detail of every single dish was so complex and flavorful. Sitting at the elevated seats right in front of the chefs was a treat as we were able to see our food made and all the other dishes on the menu also."

  • "Le Pigeon is small ... very small. The noise level is high, higher than I care for. Having said that, the good exceeded my expectations by a wide margin. If you go to Le Pigeon, be aware of the tiny dining room and expect a lot of noise, but also expect a great meal. My wife had the duck and said it was the best she'd ever had. I had the Beef Cheek Bourguignon, and it was superb, one of the richest beef dishes I have ever had. I would like to see more local (Oregon and Washington) wines on their wine list. I checked it before we went and ended up bringing my own bottle of a good Oregon Pinot. So, great food, great desserts, high noise level, and not enough local wines. I will definitely go back with these expectations."

  • "Food was very good, very labor intensive, lost on non foodies, but nothing outstanding; very good but not outstanding. The tasting menu gives a good idea about the range of the food. Service was friendly, educational but a little disjointed. We ordered the 5 course tasting menu with the reserve level wine pairings which at $75 for each meal and $55 for the pairing is pricey. With tip, over $300 for 2. The reserve wine pairings were excellent and generally were well matched with each course. (The table next to us ordered the 5 course tasting menu with the standard pairings. Their first course was accompanied by Spanish Cava; our identical first course was accompanied by French Champagne.) 8/10 for food. 6/10 for service. 6/10 for value."

  • "A small restaurant but very cozy. A home cooking feel. Service was warm, attentive but unobtrusive. Communal table is creative idea to utilize the small space. Since we dined at 530pm, the communal table was only half full and we were all seated with generous amount of space. Food was flavorful and delicious. You can choose to do a prix fixe multi-course tasting menu or like what we did, ala carte. My GF and I each had 3 courses and we were very satisfied and full at the end. Portions are generous. Price was very reasonable for the quality that we received. Overall, highly recommended."

  • "I, and my table-mates, found the food to be a little over-wrought, and a little confused. The kitchen piles on too many flavors, too many disparate elements, and, at least in our dishes, those elements didn't really come together. That said, the quality of ingredients is impeccable, and the level of the cooking itself often quite high. The "Foie Gras Profiteroles" do live up to their reputation -- they are a wonderfully decedent dessert. On the other hand, the "Foie Gras and smoked sable" appetizer was just weird, as was the halibut entree, and the "Pork and Clams." The duck confit was the simplest entree we tried, and the best, but even there, fewer elements would have been better. To my tastes, at least, the food lacked focus."

  • "I am a cook and aspiring Chef visiting Portland and I did my research and knew Le Pigeon was a must! My expectations were very high as I have read and even own the Le Pigeon cookbook and I know that Chef Rucker is a James Beard Award Winner. I got the 7 course tasting menu and was absolutely blow away, high expectations and all! There is also a unique experience watching the cooks cook and construct your dinner. Le Pigeon is a Le Must if in Portland or even a couple hours away. Make the journey and you will not be disappointed."

  • "I made a reservation about three weeks in advance, still didn't get the table I want. We ended up at the bar. Food is great, can't complain about food. I love the Escargot, and the Pork and clams. Very rich and delicious. It is a small place on E. Burnside, tables are communal. If you love French, this is the place. I'm just not too impressed with the service, that is all."

  • "It's difficult to get a reservation here – and it was already getting busy by 5:30pm, when we managed to grab one. It has a nice French bistro feel, and we sat up at the bar which was a great experience. We had the five-course tasting menu, which had a great start (beef carpaccio followed by smoked foie gras – both were incredible and full of flavour). The third dish, scallops with fried rice, was great. The main was venison, and both of us found it too sweet. However, the desserts made up for it. Firstly there was a foie gras ice-cream profiterole with salted caramel. That was mind-blowing. There was a light Japanese-style cheesecake, too, which we loved. Service was prompt and friendly. Would definitely go again!"

  • "This was my second visit to Le Pigeon, and both experiences have been superlative! Customer service, from the reservation confirmation to seating to service throughout the meal, is always first-rate and friendly without being intrusive. The restaurant is small, which can enhance the noise level, but there is never an unpleasant vibe, as everyone is there for the fantastic food. And the food from Chef Gabriel Rucker IS FANTASTIC! I've been lucky to snag a counter/bar seat both times, and it is fascinating to look into the open kitchen and watch the maestro and his team create deliciousness. I recommend going with one of the Chef's tasting menus, with paired wines, to truly experience the magic that characterizes what Chef Rucker does."
