Diner Reviews
  • "Asparagus salad and Flat iron steak were great, but the gnocchi was bland... Like many NYC restaurants, don't expect more than 3 inches between your table and the one next to it."

  • "We had a delicious meal; the pea soup tasted like spring, and the mussels were some of the best I have had. The restaurant was crowded and lively, but we could still hear each other across the table. The staff was knowledgable about both food and wine and all were very friendly. Will go back ASAP!"

  • "No Cassoulet, no beef Bourguignon, no Bouillabaisse, no Coq au vin, no escargot. no mussels, not even haricot vert. Ironically, they have the original menu as wallpaper, but when I tried to order from that, I was told "we don't carry those anymore." There were no specials. Hanger steak and pommes frites. I can get anywhere. Every dish was significantly oversalted. The single standout was a side order of mushrooms, garlic and butter. The closest thing they had to classic was veal en veloute, which was okay if you could get past the salt and the side order of very plain rice. The crusty bread was good. It's fine if you need to eat. If you are craving classic French bistro, this might not be where you want to be."

  • "Gourmand bistro food in a lovely, high-ceiling loft-like space. It's one of those restaurants that engenders good conversation. Recommend."

  • "We were pleasantly surprised to stumble on this restaurant prior to going to the theater nearby. Although the on the wall menu is misleading (decorative and not the actual menu), the food and service offered were superb. We are making plans to return with friends."

  • "Comfortable, casual atmosphere. Nothing pretentious except the name. Unfortunately, they do not have a full bar. (They do serve beer and wine.) Their menu is the main attraction, with unapologetically French dishes like frog legs, tournedos Rossini and crepes suzette. On the whole, a fun little restaurant that I thoroughly enjoyed."

  • "Lots of buzz in this bistro. Ambience friendly and interesting menu. A pity my friend and I had been eating too much on our NY trip or else we would have indulged a bit more here! My duck was perfect!"

  • "From the moment we walked in to Le Philosophe we felt as though we had been invited to a friend's house. The warmth of the restaurant was the first indication of a great night. This friendliness and special service continued all evening. They have a great wine list and the recommendation was perfect. Of course, the best part of the night was the food. We loved the mussels and the roasted bone marrow for appetizers and then came the pork special and the steak with foie gras. We will definitely return."

  • "The service was superb! Very friendly and attentive host and wait staff. The restaurant was packed so we got seated later than our reservation time, but they never forgot about us while we were waiting at the bar and gave us complimentary champagne for waiting. The food was so delicious! Was pleasantly surprised that NYC had proper French food as my boyfriend and I have spent a considerable amount of time in Europe and are used to a certain standard. The restaurant was very busy and crowded and I could hardly hear myself speak at times, so that was the only negative, but I guess that's to be expected on a Saturday night. Overall, great place and I would definitely come here again."

  • "We had an exceptional meal at Le Philosophe! The food from start to finish was outstanding with every single plate being able to stand on it's own, but more importantly part of a complete meal. They have their image perfectly constructed as a French Restaurant using traditional techniques and flavor profiles to create an amazing experience right down to the perfectly executed short espresso that no one gets right... they did! The only "issue" we had was ordering a 30 year old bottle of wine that was improperly decanted, so ask for the sommelier so it doesn't get ruined! Other than that (the manager was extremely gracious and helpful in rectifying the situation) the meal was a complete success and we will definitely return!!"

  • "....I don't get what all the fuss is about this place. I've been twice and both times I searched for the cause for all the hype it receives. It's just okay, and it's so cramped and uncomfortable that you can't relax even. If out up with that noise level and discomfort for a true foodie moment but this place is not providing that. Just a good neighborhood place serving decent French classics. No food artistry or complexity of any kind. It's food that is very easy for a line cool to prep and then finish off as the orders come in. Good business model but for the diner there's not much to feast on."

  • "one of my favorite restaurants! hadn't been here in a few months and so great to see how it's really got its groove on. wonderful service, great vibe and really good food - although my favorite dish (bacon veiled salmon) is currently off the menu. however, everything i have eaten here is amazing: my recommendations are the mussels, the hanger steak, the profiteroles."

  • "Had seen the chef/owners interviewed on tv and thought a new bistro, I love French food just not their version of it. I don't like my food, especially bistro food, designed for me. My dinner partner ordered steak frits slices of steak and fries and it looked like something you would serve to a chIild. She didn't say a word about her meal but not happy. My duck a l'orange was equally without flavor or appeal. Dessert was delicious, rare that I order it but I needed something to elevate my mood. When I think bistro I think comfort, well cooked but not overly fussy. The place itself is handsome but ridiculously overcrowded and the noise level is just awful. We actually were meeting to discuss business which we did but it wasn't easy."

  • "Perhaps my expectations were excessive b/c of the NYT review but I was expecting to be awstruck and wasn't. I started with the frogs legs, which were well presented but ultimately a bit bland. My ravioli entree was pretty fabulous. I tasted the chicken --- which should hit it out of the park -- and it was just merely OK. One of tmy fellow dinners got the scallop special, which was comically small. Also, we were a party of six and the table was really only suited for 4 or 5. There are just so many other more complete dining options around I can't see running back."

  • "Superb & well priced wines, which beautifully complement the well crafted dishes! It's obvious that this restaurant cares about sourcing ingredients of the highest quality. As other reviewers have noted, the duck is highly recommended."

  • "service was fine, but food was adequate....most entrees were way to salty."

  • "The menu at Le Philosophe is not adventurous but the food is superb. It features classic French bistro style food but prepared using the freshest and best ingredients prepared with great care. The result is that both dishes we tried were incredibly delicious and enjoyable. My duck a l'orange was meaty and tender and my daughter's steak frites was outstanding, too. I always judge French bistro food by the quality of their frites, and theirs were off the charts!"

  • "This was what I hope to be the first of many meals at Philosophe. It was perfect: interesting menu with many items I haven't seen in years. Delicious food, every bit of everything we had. Friendly and professional service. And the place is really lovely."

  • "We booked for an evening where my boyfriend's children had flown in to surprise him on his birthday. He was late by 20 minutes and they had a scheme to ask him for directions outside the restaurant--which delayed us even further from taking the table. The restaurant manager and staff pitched right in to the idea of it, no stress about the late table, and really helped to make the evening a success. The food is excellent, classic brasserie-menu but with modern stylings and with generous but not irresponsible portion sizes. Noise level is on the high side but not hideous, and it was a Friday evening so to be expected. I would go back."

  • "Some French restaurants are too fussy, and others are too rustic. Le Philosophe is perfectly in between. We had marrow bones, duck rillettes and frog legs for appetizers. All were great but the frog legs were exceptional. The main course duck was fabulous, as was the chestnut ravioli. As for the wine, the Barbera recommended by our waitperson was only so-so, but at least it wasn't overpriced. In fact, one of the great things about Le Philosophe is the significant number of excellent wines for under $50. The profiteroles for dessert were not extraordinary, but they were yummy. And given the quality and quantity of the food, the check wasn't too shocking. Can't wait to go back."

  • "The food is yummy but suffers at the hands of its bearers. 2 orders of chicken and 3 of a fabulous Chestnut pasta were brought to the table as chicken And 2 pasta - the 3rd came almost 10 minutes later! Servers chatting together at the bar had to be roused For drinks. The Maître d is fabulous - he needs to Wrangle the waitstaff so one can enjoy the food and drink."

  • "Not to steal too blatantly from the Governator, but I found Le Philosophe just an excellent choice. A varied menu, with dishes not typically available even in other NYC French restaurants. Good preparation and presentation, and friendly/non-intrusive service. Boy, it filled up quickly during the evening, too."

  • "We enjoyed ourselves. Food was tasty and carefully prepared, however we had to wait 45 minutes into our reservation for our table and the server was very slow (think 10 minutes, plus) to pick our credit cards once the check was presented. Meanwhile I spotted her gossiping and laughing with a table she seemed to have rapport with. Hmm... Perhaps this inattentiveness was one of the reasons we had to wait 45 minutes for our table? Think."

  • "We had a terrific dinner here. The duck was the very best I've ever had and the pumpkin soup was excellent. I recommended this to my brother who lives nearby and would recommend it to anyone. We wanted a French meal at moderate price and this was a perfect choice."

  • "Classic French food with a nouveau twist. Bone marrow is fabulous and great for sharing. Love the duck a l'orange and very creative pastas. Profiterolles are a terrific way to finish. Very interesting wine list with something for everyone, including very affordable wines as well as wines for celebrating."

  • "I met a friend for brunch and the food was great. The menu has a few happy surprises and I wanted to eat everything. I recommend the Duck Hash and cappuccino. It was good enough, I want to go back and explore the dinner menu."

  • "This French Bistro on Bond Street is a real treat. The service is very very friendly and very efficient. They go out of their way to make you feel wanted. The food has always been excellent. For our dinner we had pumpkin velouté and mussels. Both excellent. For the main courses chestnut ravioli and flat iron steak with terrific french fries. For dessert we shared the profiteroles. This is the only dessert we have ever had here. I'm sure the others are also good but the profiteroles are really special. Our wine was a Gruner Vetliner. Reasonably priced and very very good. If you have not gone give it a chance. You will not be sorry"

  • "I ordered an omelette and when it showed up, I honestly thought it was a joke. It was missing all the ingredients that were listed on the menu. I'm not sure if they misunderstood my order but it was pathetic they even served it. Very poor experience"

  • "The folks at Le Philosophe are always gracious, friendly and competent. The food is well-presented and tasty - I love some of the more nostalgic and decadent menu options. The wine list offers a range of options in both variety and price. Can't wait for my next visit!"

  • "Real old school French cuisine. Frogs legs, Tournedos Rossini and Profiteroles....wonderful. The tournedos was simply one of the best dishes I've had in years. Mix that with a warm and charming reception from Tony and friendly attentive service from his staff and you have the recipe for a perfect evening. We'll be back again very soon"

  • "Le Philosophe was our choice to celebrate two years together and it worked out to be an absolutely wonderful evening. The food was great, the wine list was extensive, and the ambience was perfectly romantic. Very happy to recommend this restaurant to friends"

  • "We had an epic dining experience that far exceeded expectations! The mussels, beet salad, fries, duck, profiteroles, and even the warm olives were fantastic! Service was impeccable from the greeting at the door through our departure. The adjacent table was celebrating a brithday and inadvertenly ordered the exact same menu and fully agreed. I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone."

  • "Always excellent food, and service. The wine list continues to surprise with a broad range at a great price point. Truly, my favorite French restaurant. Romantic, comfortable, seductive. The lighting, the decor, the professional service, & the nods to formal dining (napkin rings) in an otherwise relaxed setting, all come together to enhance the the amazing food. The food. The food. The food. Order the Rossini, as rare as you dare. You will not be disappointed."
