  • "Dinner experience was remarkable, as expected. The food was exquisite; the amuse bouche were elegant, and there were 3, all of which were served in a unique presentation and all of which were superb. All 4 of us enjoyed our entrees, and the maitre d' was kind enough to allow us to bring in a small wedding cake, as this was a celebration of our friends' marriage. The service was attentive without being intrusive, and each course was described as it was presented, which is a very nice touch. My only issue was that the wine we chose was not available in the year listed on the wine list, and the newer year wasn't nearly as good as the prior year."

  • "I have wanted to go to this restaurant since I was 20 years old (I turned 49 that night). It was everything I hoped it to be. Imaginative french cuisine that still resonated with provincial flavors and staples. There was not a thing we tried that evening that was not perfectly seasoned and prepared. And the sommelier did an excellent job of choosing two half bottles of French wines, a red and white, that complimented our diverse meal perfectly. I highly recommend this establishment for special occasions for small groups of 2 - 4 people."

  • "I had not been to Le Papillon for probably 25 years. What was I thinking? We went there Sunday night for my wife's dinner and it was outstanding! From the two amuse bouche to the outstanding appetizers (the Hamachi tartare and lobster were fantastic) and the main courses, we all had a great dinner. My wife's deer was perfectly cooked, my swordfish was very tender (a lot of times it can be too firm and lacking texture) and both my children loved their lamb and duck entrees. We will definitely be back soon and will be trying the tasting menu next."

  • "The appetizers are superb, the salads and soups exquisite, and the main courses truly outstanding (we have partaken in just about everything on the menu) ... but .. if I had one dying wish on my death bed ... it would be to have one last Le Papillion Grand Marnier Souffle !!! The perfect end to a perfect evening. Also, the staff is absolutely the best .. besides being professional, they always are so warm and genuine -- a large reason for our repeat visits. A special restaurant for special occasions!"

  • "Le Papillon is a wonderful 'modern' classic French restaurant. It's 'prix fixe' only but at 2 levels (3 courses or 4 courses), with many (many!) choices for each course: appetizer, soup/salad, entree, dessert. The snails appetizer was the best we've ever had, & seriously one of the tastiest items of the evening. The salsify/truffle soup was the 2nd tastiest. The pea/asparagus soup was good but needed seasoning. The duck breast entree was ample but greasy & could have used lots more cherry sauce. The pork loin entree was great. We were too full for dessert. The coffee wasn't the best we ever had. Long wine list, friendly sommelier, but we'd never again get the wine he recommended. It's a pricey restaurant, but great for a special occasion."

We had the Hamachi tatare and scallops to start; the beef tenderloin and pork for our entrees. Save room for dessert too because they have a great selection to choose from.   • "What an amazing meal! Both of us wanted to lick our plates. We ordered the four course fixed price deal. I started off with a lobster appetizer that was wonderful. My main dish was a red deer that was equally as delicious. My wife had a beef tenderloin with a bone marrow ravioli that she refused to share because it was so good. Price is expensive but worth it. We'll go again!"

  • "We have not been to Le Papillon for sometime, 18 months+. The first thing that we were struck with is the new price level--very high for a non-Michelin starred restaurant. But but the service, the amuse bouche, the ambiance are quiet good so we were willing to give it the benefit of the doubt.. The hamachi tartare was superb. The problem was with the main courses. I ordered the lamb loin rare/medium rare and it came to me medium/medium well. Since our server did not check back with us, I ate about half and took the rest home for our cats. Our server finally came to the table and offered us a souffle' for dessert which we declined. My wife's red deer entree was cooked about correct, but the reduction it sat in overwhelmed the deer. "

It had been about 20 years since I'd eaten at Le Papillon, but I was impressed with the restaurant back then. The restaurant is still impressive. The food and service was excellent (thank you Katelyn!), and the ambience within the restaurant was calm and warm. Le Papillon delivered a memorable and enjoyable evening for my wife and I.   • "The maitre d stole my heart when he told us he was putting us at his table for 'the beautiful people', which I thought was a very sweet way to acknowledge we were all dressed up for a night out. We lucked out with a server who was also a certified sommelier, and he gave a great advice on trying a prix fixe menu and put together very thoughtful custom wine pairings for us. The food is amazing. Eat EVERYTHING. Even if you think you won't like it, you probably will. "

My wife ordered the scallops, the palm salad with grapefruit, and the lamb. Dishes were ok. Nothing really blew my mind, but the place is really nice. Would I come back? Probably not. I have to say though that I've been searching for the best food in the world, and been to many good restaurants, and concluded that $$$$ doesn't equal to out of this world food. Lasting memories and places where I would come back, are definitely way below the $$ mark. Again, there is nothing wrong with this place, just that my expectations are way higher for this price. "

  • "I would definitely come back again! Kathy/Cathy was our wait staff and she was efficient, attentive, and a gem. Everything from the 3 Amuse Bouche to the Toffee mignardise was superb. I chose the 4-course Prix Fixe and asked that it be "Chef's choice". Out came the most exquisite and delicate lobster tail appetizer, a beautifully presented Heart of Palm salad, and a tender, flavorful tenderloin of Red Deer for my entree. Dessert was the renowned Grand Marnier souffle. Accompanied by this meal was a bottle of Red Burgundy (2010 Domaine Heresztyn, Gevrey Chambertin, Clos Village), chosen with the assistance of the Sommelier. Pricing was very reasonable for this caliber of service and food. A must go! "

  • "I hadn't eaten at Le Papillion in probably 30 years, but I remembered it fondly and when I wanted to give a special treat to a special friend, it just made sense to try it again. The staff is well trained, attentive (without being 'in your face), and delightful. Each dish is creatively prepared and probably won't look like you'd expect might because the chef(s) are so creative and they add little flourishes to tease your taste buds. To keep things on a high note, we were delivered no fewer than three 'amuse bouches' dishes -- all different and fabulous. And I remembered the Grand Marnier Souffle, so of course, we had to order that and I'm glad we did. I couldn't eat there every night, but that's why it is good for a special occasion. "

  • "We recently went here for dinner and for the price there are better choices in the Bay Area. We have eaten at some of the finest restaurants and were somewhat disappointed with our meal. Nothing was bad just uneventful. The scallop appetizer was good just blah. I was excited about the hearts of palm salad which looked like a beautiful flower, but again lacking otherwise. We had the fish wellington (I believe it was cod) and even though marinated to remove fishiness, it was still fishy and blah. The highlight was dessert. Their grand marnier soufflé remains an excellent choice! Over the years, since the 80's, we have experienced great meals and not so good meals. At this point in time, I think we will wait before going back. "

The atmosphere was quiet and refined, the service attentive but not obtrusive, and the food was some of the best we've ever eaten. The food wasn't wildly experimental, focusing more on well thought out pairings of textures and flavours. We were treated like honoured guests, and my husband even got a special Happy Birthday message on his dessert plate. It's a restaurant that is perfect for a special occasion - although we will find any excuse to come at any time! PS: they make a killer gin and tonic!"
