Diner Reviews
  • "We were pleasantly surprised with Le Grenier. Inside the unassuming building was an authentic feeling French eatery, and the food was great as well. We went for brunch, but will be back for dinner."

  • "We went there on a special meal deal, and was a little put off by the wide variation in reviews -- ranging from 1 to 5. So, when the service AND the food were both very good, it was indeed a pleasant surprise. I would recommend this place for an interesting visit to NE DC and a good menu and wine list."

  • "The food here is wonderful and the wine list has a nice selection of french wine without the over the top price tag."

  • "We enjoyed our meal here very much, server was friendly and knowledgeable and the owner is great. She spent time talking to us and made us feel very welcome."

  • "My second time here. We tried it a while ago, the food was good but subsequent visits were put off by the horrible attitude of the owner who also hosts. Being French is no excuse for rudeness. On this visit he was not there but the food was definitely sub par. On the second insistence of my server to give feedback on my catch of the day dish, I said the perhaps it was over cooked (it was very much overlooked) to which he replied "well it is French cooking, that is how we pan sear fish". No it is not. Last time."

  • "Very French in all the right ways. About eight or ten entrees, extensive cheese selection, good selection of crepes, interesting salads, charcuterie, tempting selection of desserts, and a good selection of wines many at a moderate price. Comfortable seating in an "attic" setting--almost romantic. Definitely, a neighborhood gem. Most recently dinned Sunday, June 29, 14."

  • "This was my fourth visit to Le Grenier. I've only had one meal that I thought was mediocre. This time I took my mother in law for her birthday. Le Grenier didn't disappoint. We had the meat and cheese plate and fish of the day, mussels. Very tasty though the service was initially a bit slow."

  • "This place is my favorite French dining spot in DC. The ambience is terrific, very relaxed and comfortable. Servers are very friendly, knowledgeable and responsive. The food is terrific. Very original take on French cooking and always prepared perfectly. I highly recommend trying this place if you want good French food."

  • "Good french food, good service felt like i was back in Paris no rush to move the table! reasonable prices"

  • "Loved the food and ambience, but had to ask for the loud music to be turned down so that conversation could be carried on."

  • "We were very pleased stopping here for brunch along with a visiting friend from NYC. The food was very good and the service good and friendly. The ambiance is really fun. We'll return."

  • "Our food took about an hour to come to us, but other than that, everything was great."

  • "The atmosphere is absolutely adorable. From the vintage suitcases and armoire along the stairs, to the tea tins over the mantle piece, and so on. My only (slight) knock was that the waitstaff attire seemed a little disjointed - I would have liked to see more continuity. Bar service was great, and the happy hour prices were amazing and unexpected. Dinner itself was extremely tasty - I had the lamb and it practically fell apart in the shallow stew (in the best way). Our cheese course was a little underwhelming but that could have been due to our choices. And you can't go wrong with table side flambé for dessert! Service was solid. We ate very slowly and our waiter was attentive but never pushy. Highly recommended."

  • "Their brunch deal seems like a great deal at 2 courses and a mimosa for about $20, but the portions are on the small side. The nutella crepe was tiny, spongy, and dry with a mere smudge of nutella on top, and the lemon sugar tasted like floor cleaner. I don't think they are using fresh lemons. French fries are of the frozen variety. When I asked for aioli, a French restaurant of all places I thought, will surely make their own. My choices were ketchup, mayo, or mustard. I would probably not go back, but all in all an OK brunch experience."

  • "I was a bit skeptical coming here, as I am a vegetarian, but the food was great! I started with the seasonal spinach/pear soup, and they easily adapted their eggs florentine to have no bacon. I was a bit worried bringing my child here for father's day brunch as well, but we found several things on the menu he could eat, he opted for the French Toast it came with a generous portions of fruit and chocolate sauce, he was in heaven! Looking forward to coming back!"

  • "Enjoyed my first visit here last fall---but the meal that we had Thursday evening was disgusting. Chewy, musty mussels, a hangar steak that was literally nothing but fat and gristle, and a Provencal rose that tasted like a bad sauvignon blanc tinted pink. The kitchen was incredibly slow (we had to wait for nearly 40 minutes for the salads to come out---and when they did, the poached egg on mine was cold, rubbery, and hard-cooked. And that was actually the best thing that I was served. It was all down hill from there.) On the plus side, the service was attentive. Won't be back. Ever."

  • "Ideal french restaurant with good cheese/wine selection and fascinating dishes. Great for dates. Can't go wrong."

  • "Another brunch visit nailed by Le Grenier. Came with two new dining companions, both of whom raved over the interior design - truly a charming place. One companion had the coddled eggs with truffle oil and chives, the other had the eggs norvigienne (eggs benedict with smoked salmon). Wonderfully fresh and well-cooked eggs, fries crispy and salty and made-to-order - thumbs-up all around. I had the galette of the day, a take on a caprese salad with fresh roma tomatoes, sliced mozzarella cheese, torn basil, and pesto oil. Light, summery, with a bit of heft and body from the buckwheat crepe. A two-course brunch with a glass of champagne or a mimosa, all for $19? Sold. Well done, LG, as always."

  • "The food and the ambiance are great. We have been many times for brunch and for their happy hours. We recently ate dinner there with the in-laws and it took 45 minutes for our charcuterie arrived and entrees were another 45. We weren't in a hurry but the waiter seemed unconcerned that we had to wait. The food is authentic and tastes fantastic. The service that night was almost a cliche. "

  • "Saw several reviews and decided to stop by for brunch. Great atmosphere, delicious food, reasonable price and a handsome waiter with a wonderful accent. Service was laid back and yet attentive. A cocktail is included in the price, and definitely want to come back for dinner. Definitely a winner and look forward to some great meals."

  • "Offers a small but varied menu of well prepared French offerings and a great wine list a reasonable prices. The staff is knowledgeable and friendly. Definitely worth repeat visits"

  • "we've been here 5-6 times in the past few months and never get tired of it. the cheese plate is excellent; the wine list is comprehensive and amazing. there are quite a few cheaper wines on the list that are worth it. we've been here on dates and with our parents, and every occasion has been great. "

  • "I ordered the braised beef cheeks in kahlua sauce and was not disappointed. The meat was incredibly tender, well-seasoned, and cooked perfectly. Chocolate ice cream is also incredibly rich and delicious."

  • "I truly love Le Grenier for it's ambiance and charm. The meals we have explored have varied in terms of successful culinary eats. Some dishes have been truly delicious and well balanced with flavors; others a little off, perhaps trying too hard to combine ingredients in unique ways. This said, Le Grenier is still my first choice for charm, down to earth (with flare) dining, moderately priced and tasty, though not true gourmet dining."

  • "I've now eaten there 3 times over the last couple of years. My first experience (as a self professed foodie and accompanied by a friend who was a former Food and Entertainment editor for a well-known women's magazine) was very disappointing. Recently -- encouraged by some positive reviews -- I decided to go again. The main courses were still disappointing, but the salads, appetizers, and deserts were quite good. I found the cheese course (3 cheeses + fruit + greens) to ridiculously be expensive for what it was. I wouldn't even consider it a "tasting." Nevertheless, the ambience, service, and wine list, plus the fact it is easy walking distance from my house, will keep me coming back in the hope that they continue to up their game."

  • "I went for mother's day and arrived early for my reservation. They were accommodating, which I really appreciated, and seated us right away. The food was delicious and the cocktails well done. Lovely brunch experience in a very old world looking restaurant. Worth a visit! "

  • "I really enjoyed the brunch at Le Grenier. It was a great price for some great food. The salad was delicious, the dessert was very french, and the entrees were generous. The waitstaff was not overly attentive but that was what was nice about it. Overall the restaurant was beautiful and it was a great meal!"

  • "My biggest compliant with Le Grenier would be the service. When I walked in, it took a moment to be greeted. When I was greeted it was met with an icy stare that read, "What do you want" instead of, "How may I help you." My attire was appropriated for the occasion, so it must have been my black skin color. The dish I ordered, the pork tenderloin wasn't very flavorful. My date had the fish, and he was very pleased. I loved the atmosphere and I will try Le Grenier one more time in anticipation that I misread the host. "

  • "Waiter not very friendly - food just OK. Had high hopes for this place - has a groovy feel but needs a boost in service and food quality"

  • "We live in the neighborhood and recently discovered this beautiful, thoughtfully designed gem. Have been 3 times and each had been a wonderful experience - all around. Most recent was for my husband's birthday and we had a table if 11. The staff handled everything beautifully and everyone at the table raved about the food, the decor and the service. Le Grenier is our new favorite DC spot!"

  • "I chose Le Grenier to meet a friend because of the restaurants participation in Dining Out For Life. What a great find. A drink at the bar, a lovely dinner, splitting a bottle of wine, all very reasonable because of specials. The food was great, the atmosphere is funky sophisticated. I'll definitely be back. "

  • "Our dinner was to celebrate a work achievement, it coincidentally aligned with Valentine's Day. They had a romantic theme and fixed menu but we did not order from it. Le Grenier was a cozy restaurant with a neat vibe. The menu had lots of delicious-sounding options. They have a great cheese and charcuterie menu. Our food was good, though perhaps not outstanding. The price was reasonable for DC."

  • "I have loved this place each time I have gone. The wine list is spectacular. And my friends tell me the cocktails are quite good (I don't drink hard liquor). Oh, and don't forget the bread - there is none better in DC! Thank goodness they only give you one piece at a time or I would find myself only eating the bread! This last visit was just a bit disappointing. Everything was great except for the main dishes. My friends steak, ordered medium, was quite rare and he said it tasted off. My pork medallions were very dry. A rare miss for this restaurant."

  • "Had a fantastic brunch here with friends last weekend. Great deal with one glass of champagne/mimosa with appetizer+entree or entree+dessert. They put a candle on my friend's nutella crepe because it was her birthday, which was very cute! Service is fairly slow, but very French, I suppose."

  • "Met all expectations; the food was superb in every way. One of my friends said she had the best vegetables she's ever had! The cheese selection is amazing - and the french bread is exceptional. The prices are very reasonable for the quality. I am definitely going to recommend to anyone who visits DC."
