Diner Reviews
  • "Excellent presentation with great taste. Ordered four staters and four main, all were of the same quality. Two deserts for share was also great. It was by far the best restaurant we've ever been to,"

  • "Great spot with stellar service and good French bistro food."

  • "We waited over 30 minutes between courses. One entree arrived cold and the other had no flavor. Salad was uninspiring and dull."

  • "Although it was loud and small, I really enjoyed the food and the service was great. Had the duck and thought it was perfect."

  • "Wonderful meal with something for everybody in a group of 8!"

  • "From the menus made from schoolchildren's notebooks, through the food, to even the carefully selected water, this place was a special treat for my special person who is French. She loved each course and all the details reminding her of home. As an American and a foodie I enjoyed it all as well."

  • "My friends and I were excited to finally try Le Grenier for brunch. We made reservations and arrived promptly, but our table was not ready and they said they were setting it up, so we were asked to wait at the bar. After 30 minutes of waiting and seeing that others who arrived after us were seated, we asked when our able would be ready and was told again that they were setting our table up. After about a 40 minute wait we were finally seated. We arrived at 12:30 and didn't leave until close to 4:00. While the staff was very nice, they were not on the ball at all. Maybe they were understaffed, but we were forgotten often. We had to request simple things like water and ketchup multiple times. Food was good, service was pretty bad."

  • "I like this restaurant a lot when I went and ordered off the regular menu, but for brunch on Saturday recently, it was quite bad. Amazingly slow service, preprepared food, in short: a disappointment."

  • "One complaint was the same someone else had that I saw. I had reservations weeks in advance and when we get there the place is only half full and they were going to seat us but I mentioned I had reservations so they said let me see where you are seated. They then said our seat was literally right beside us at the door. They offered another table upstairs which we said yes to and it was right by the kitchen door. Fresh bread with amazing butter. My food was a little over spiced but otherwise excellent."

  • "We were pleasantly surprised with Le Grenier. Inside the unassuming building was an authentic feeling French eatery, and the food was great as well. We went for brunch, but will be back for dinner."

  • "We went there on a special meal deal, and was a little put off by the wide variation in reviews -- ranging from 1 to 5. So, when the service AND the food were both very good, it was indeed a pleasant surprise. I would recommend this place for an interesting visit to NE DC and a good menu and wine list."

  • "The food here is wonderful and the wine list has a nice selection of french wine without the over the top price tag."

  • "My second time here. We tried it a while ago, the food was good but subsequent visits were put off by the horrible attitude of the owner who also hosts. Being French is no excuse for rudeness. On this visit he was not there but the food was definitely sub par. On the second insistence of my server to give feedback on my catch of the day dish, I said the perhaps it was over cooked (it was very much overlooked) to which he replied "well it is French cooking, that is how we pan sear fish". No it is not. Last time."

  • "We enjoyed our meal here very much, server was friendly and knowledgeable and the owner is great. She spent time talking to us and made us feel very welcome."

  • "Very French in all the right ways. About eight or ten entrees, extensive cheese selection, good selection of crepes, interesting salads, charcuterie, tempting selection of desserts, and a good selection of wines many at a moderate price. Comfortable seating in an "attic" setting--almost romantic. Definitely, a neighborhood gem. Most recently dinned Sunday, June 29, 14."

  • "This was my fourth visit to Le Grenier. I've only had one meal that I thought was mediocre. This time I took my mother in law for her birthday. Le Grenier didn't disappoint. We had the meat and cheese plate and fish of the day, mussels. Very tasty though the service was initially a bit slow."

  • "This place is my favorite French dining spot in DC. The ambience is terrific, very relaxed and comfortable. Servers are very friendly, knowledgeable and responsive. The food is terrific. Very original take on French cooking and always prepared perfectly. I highly recommend trying this place if you want good French food."

  • "We were very pleased stopping here for brunch along with a visiting friend from NYC. The food was very good and the service good and friendly. The ambiance is really fun. We'll return."

  • "Good french food, good service felt like i was back in Paris no rush to move the table! reasonable prices"

  • "The atmosphere is absolutely adorable. From the vintage suitcases and armoire along the stairs, to the tea tins over the mantle piece, and so on. My only (slight) knock was that the waitstaff attire seemed a little disjointed - I would have liked to see more continuity. Bar service was great, and the happy hour prices were amazing and unexpected. Dinner itself was extremely tasty - I had the lamb and it practically fell apart in the shallow stew (in the best way). Our cheese course was a little underwhelming but that could have been due to our choices. And you can't go wrong with table side flambé for dessert! Service was solid. We ate very slowly and our waiter was attentive but never pushy. Highly recommended."

  • "I was a bit skeptical coming here, as I am a vegetarian, but the food was great! I started with the seasonal spinach/pear soup, and they easily adapted their eggs florentine to have no bacon. I was a bit worried bringing my child here for father's day brunch as well, but we found several things on the menu he could eat, he opted for the French Toast it came with a generous portions of fruit and chocolate sauce, he was in heaven! Looking forward to coming back!"

  • "Their brunch deal seems like a great deal at 2 courses and a mimosa for about $20, but the portions are on the small side. The nutella crepe was tiny, spongy, and dry with a mere smudge of nutella on top, and the lemon sugar tasted like floor cleaner. I don't think they are using fresh lemons. French fries are of the frozen variety. When I asked for aioli, a French restaurant of all places I thought, will surely make their own. My choices were ketchup, mayo, or mustard. I would probably not go back, but all in all an OK brunch experience."

  • "Enjoyed my first visit here last fall---but the meal that we had Thursday evening was disgusting. Chewy, musty mussels, a hangar steak that was literally nothing but fat and gristle, and a Provencal rose that tasted like a bad sauvignon blanc tinted pink. The kitchen was incredibly slow (we had to wait for nearly 40 minutes for the salads to come out---and when they did, the poached egg on mine was cold, rubbery, and hard-cooked. And that was actually the best thing that I was served. It was all down hill from there.) On the plus side, the service was attentive. Won't be back. Ever."

  • "Another brunch visit nailed by Le Grenier. Came with two new dining companions, both of whom raved over the interior design - truly a charming place. One companion had the coddled eggs with truffle oil and chives, the other had the eggs norvigienne (eggs benedict with smoked salmon). Wonderfully fresh and well-cooked eggs, fries crispy and salty and made-to-order - thumbs-up all around. I had the galette of the day, a take on a caprese salad with fresh roma tomatoes, sliced mozzarella cheese, torn basil, and pesto oil. Light, summery, with a bit of heft and body from the buckwheat crepe. A two-course brunch with a glass of champagne or a mimosa, all for $19? Sold. Well done, LG, as always."

  • "The food and the ambiance are great. We have been many times for brunch and for their happy hours. We recently ate dinner there with the in-laws and it took 45 minutes for our charcuterie arrived and entrees were another 45. We weren't in a hurry but the waiter seemed unconcerned that we had to wait. The food is authentic and tastes fantastic. The service that night was almost a cliche. "

  • "Saw several reviews and decided to stop by for brunch. Great atmosphere, delicious food, reasonable price and a handsome waiter with a wonderful accent. Service was laid back and yet attentive. A cocktail is included in the price, and definitely want to come back for dinner. Definitely a winner and look forward to some great meals."

  • "we've been here 5-6 times in the past few months and never get tired of it. the cheese plate is excellent; the wine list is comprehensive and amazing. there are quite a few cheaper wines on the list that are worth it. we've been here on dates and with our parents, and every occasion has been great. "

  • "I truly love Le Grenier for it's ambiance and charm. The meals we have explored have varied in terms of successful culinary eats. Some dishes have been truly delicious and well balanced with flavors; others a little off, perhaps trying too hard to combine ingredients in unique ways. This said, Le Grenier is still my first choice for charm, down to earth (with flare) dining, moderately priced and tasty, though not true gourmet dining."

  • "I ordered the braised beef cheeks in kahlua sauce and was not disappointed. The meat was incredibly tender, well-seasoned, and cooked perfectly. Chocolate ice cream is also incredibly rich and delicious."

  • "I've now eaten there 3 times over the last couple of years. My first experience (as a self professed foodie and accompanied by a friend who was a former Food and Entertainment editor for a well-known women's magazine) was very disappointing. Recently -- encouraged by some positive reviews -- I decided to go again. The main courses were still disappointing, but the salads, appetizers, and deserts were quite good. I found the cheese course (3 cheeses + fruit + greens) to ridiculously be expensive for what it was. I wouldn't even consider it a "tasting." Nevertheless, the ambience, service, and wine list, plus the fact it is easy walking distance from my house, will keep me coming back in the hope that they continue to up their game."
