Diner Reviews
  • "Everything about my experience at Le Diplomate was superb. The food was amazing, the ambiance was charming, and the service was immaculate."

  • "We ate at Le Diplomate for the first time this weekend for a birthday celebration and I have been raving about it. You really feel as though you have arrived in Paris (the waiter even had an accent!). The bread is the best (truly) and the food (mushroom tart, tuna tartare carpaccio, steak frites, and beef bourgoignon) were all delicious, beautifully prepared and timely served. The one disappointment was the scallops which were drowned in a gloppy sabayon/béarnaise. Do not miss the very large milk chocolate pot du cream for dessert. It is worth the trip into Logan Circle and the $12 valet parking (not kidding) for a really special dining experience."

  • "At first we were seated at a terrible table in the back of the restaurant right by the waiter station. We asked for a different table and were re-seated in a much nicer area quite quickly. I thought that the food was good but not great. The bread that was served was the standout of the meal for me, especially the bread that came with the radish crudite. The radishes themselves were fresh and crisp - a very original and satisfying appetizer. My entree was the braised lamb with couscous. Again, well-made but not amazing. Overall, I'm glad that I went, but given the cost of our dinner I am not interested in going back. My husband liked the food more than I did, but in general he likes French cuisine more than I do."

  • "Amazing food. Great ambiance. Lots of classics but with modern and local twists. Examples are: le plat du jour SUN - coq au riesling, which was a nice twist on a Winter classic. Also, the fluke ceviche was a more citrus motivated version French versions I've had. The details make this place like a portal to a bistro in France. I also tried the mushroom tart (crunchy and savory, mushrooms and pecorino paired well), the classic onion soup with gruyère that was hearty, the fall off the bone duck confit, addictive escargot. Cant' wait to go again."

  • "Extremely noisy. Reservations highly advisable. Very nice decor, good service and good food."

  • "Yes, the food is great, but if I have to ask for water, wait for drinks, they don't bring my entire order, and I have to beg to order food and drink, how enjoyable an experience is it? It is worth $100+ dollars for two people for brunch??? There is great food everywhere in DC...service is how places can differentiate themselves. Usually its great at Le Diplomate -- my suspicion is that they are getting complacent. Get back to basics, people. Attention to service is what makes a restaurant great."

  • "As an avid foodie and homecook myself, Le Diplomate ranks high on my DC favorites. The entire brunch was great. A friend and I had reservations and we were immediately seated on arrival, as a true reservation warrants. The service was awesome. The food was incredible (and if there's one things I was impressed with, it came out quick! Especially at such a busy time, that's hard to find in a lot of place.) Overall great visit and will definitely be back!"

  • "It's not easy to get a reservation here, but it's worth it! The food is outstanding."

  • "This was my wife's birthday and I wanted all to go well. The restaurant ambiance was perfect -- a Parisian in DC experience. Service was very good and the wine and appetizers were wonderful. Then the entrees unfortunately arrived ...one was not hot enough... and both were oversalted and virtually inedible. The management reacted with concern and brought several desserts, but unfortunately the perfect romantic had been missed."

  • "We enjoyed the pastry basket, it is required eating if your here for brunch it can not be missed. The mussels were delicious and the restaurant was so adorable, I feel like I have eaten in a restaurant designed just the same in France!"

  • "Everything about le Dip is first rate. That's way getting a res is difficult. Highly recommended."

  • "First, the reservation/hostess staff were excellent. We had a 5pm reservation, but we were running late, so we called and they were very accommodating. When we finally arrived a little after 6, they were very welcoming & pleasant and we got a great table right away. The wait staff service also was very good, no waiting for food or drinks. Regarding the food, the steak tartare was excellent, the mushroom tart was a little cool/too many mushrooms/seemed a little undercooked and the crust was a little too thick. The scallops were wonderful & the pommes frites were excellent. We were a little disappointed with the Bouillabaisse. We enjoyed watching the bar scene."

  • "Reminded us of a cafe in Paris. Lots of places try , this one gets it right . Casual but not. Great food, but not pretentious about it. They got it right."

  • "Not many places on Earth compare to Paris, but Le Diplomate provides one with a little taste of what it's like dining in the"City of Lights!" The food is exquisite and the service superb. The "experience" begins as soon as you enter the door. From start to finish I was teleported back to a top notch Parisian Bistro. A "Must" for anyone looking for great food, service and a friendly experience!"

  • "With all the new restaurants to try on 14th, it's tough to commit to going to one twice, but alas, Le Dip has that kind of charm and pull."
    Dined on 7/16/2014
  • "Le Diplomate is the kind of restaurant you were likely to find in Paris 30 years ago - big and noisy, with eclectic decor and a menu featuring almost every classic French staple - steak frites, bouef bourguignon, onion soup, etc. This was our first visit; we enjoyed it and would probably return."

  • "Authentic and savory French fare, with great service and reasonable prices. Not a single down side to Le Diplomate (except finding a reservation on short notice)."

  • "LeDiplomate is a gem! I have been there twice now and truly enjoyed both times. The service is wonderful and the food delicious. It's like sitting in a French cafe out on the patio! My only wish is that they had more of a selection of wines by the glass. Treat yourself!"

  • "We went most recently for my wife's birthday, and LD did well by us. We showed up on time and we're taken directly to our table. They knew it was a special event and added some flair to our meal presentation. Our meals ever absolutely delicious. She had the lobster risotto daily special, and I had the scallop dish. They blew my freakin' mind, those scallops. Seriously. It was a great birthday dinner. Everything is very French, except the service, which I would call "excellent American style". :)"

  • "We live on this block (but on the Corcoran side) and are so happy to have this restaurant in our neighborhood. Not only is the food great but the management and service is top notch. Love the decor/landscaping inside and out. If there is a downside, it's the noise level. Yikes! Having a conversation to the person next to you without shouting can be a challenge. We didn't hear much of what the waiter said to us. The interior design concept is great, but somebody missed the boat on integrating enough sound absorption materials."

  • "From decor to wine list to execution of traditional dishes, this place feels as genuinely French as one might find here. How much you wish to engage with/ can appreciate that doesn't matter, though, to a degree - multiple dining experiences have proven consistently superior gastronomy, service and ambiance for a diverse diners."

  • "Le Diplomate continues to shine. The Bastille Day ambiance (MIMES!) was fun without being obtrusive.....or at least the mimes weren't obtrusive. When our main dishes were slow to come out, we were given an appetizer for the table with profuse apologies."

  • "Went for Bastille Day so it was more lively and louder than ever! Yet a great time was had by all. Service was exceptional, asking how we wanted the courses paced, and never rushing us to clear the table. The steak frites was among the best ever with a thick cut that was tender and juicy. And those frites! The mussels were juicy and the broth demanded that we resort to spoons to taste after the bread was gone. Wine selection was quite good. We had a wonderful bottle of white for $40. Can't wait to return."

  • "Very popular restaurant with excellent food and good service, but, even given its successes and quality level, it is rather pricy for what it is."

  • "I love this place. The food is great; the location is great; and, the ambiance is excellent! On my most recent trip, the waiter just seemed like he could care less; however, that has been the exception rather than the norm. I've eaten at Le Diplomate six times now and do plan to return."

  • "The Sunday dinner was nice and place was nice. The meal was not spectacular and my lamb dish was covered in a tasty sauce but the meat was overcooked. I would not order that again. I think it was-- overpriced. It would be a great place for a group of "foodies" to go and share samples of the various dishes to get a more rounded opinion on the food. I might go again for maybe appetizers or maybe a dessert and a cocktail late night."

  • "This is the second time I've been to Le Dipolmate. Both times the food has been amazing. The service was great for dinner, this time for brunch, not so much. Our server was more interested in flirting with the table across from us. He forgot our drink orders on multiple occasions and never came to check on us throughout the meal. The only time he was attentive, was when it was time to bring the check."

  • "Le Diplomate is always lively and delicious. It is difficult to choose just one dish as every thing on the menu sounds inviting. The service is outstanding - helpful and attentive. I look forward to my next visit with enthusiasm!"

  • "We were seated in the sun room, I would call it, with the sun streaming through the glass, so no shade. But the door to the outside was propped open so all the air conditioning just got sucked out. It was just a little too warm. Otherwise, excellent."

  • "I am fairly certain that this was the best brunch food I have ever eaten. We arrived early for our 9:45 am reservation and were seated immediately. The only rough spot to the whole morning was that the staff seemed slightly unsure as to who would be taking care of us, but the end result was that we had more than enough service, instead of too little. The pastries were truly outstanding, and each of our egg dishes was perfectly cooked. It was the perfect way to end a weekend with my parents, and I'll be recommending it to anyone who will listen for some time to come, I'm sure."

  • "I dined at Le Diplomate for brunch while I was in Washington DC for a weekend. In preparing for the trip, I had read a few articles about the restaurant scene in DC and this one seemed to be a favorite all around. It was worth the hype as everything was outstanding. The service from the host who greeted us, to the waiter who was witty, intelligent and attentive to any one who worked in the restaurant was outstanding. The food was delicious - the bread was fresh baked and some of the best I've tasted and the ambiance of the whole place is open and airy, casual but chic and sceney without being pretentious or obnoxious. I highly recommend."

  • "We scheduled this restaurant on a whim for a Friday night and expected nice food, but not necessarily fast or cordial service. After all, when you are that busy a couple of out-of-towners could be forgotten. Not in this case. The waiters were attentive without being overbearing, they moved dinner service along without being pushy. And the food, while obviously pricy, was delicious and worth the price. The oysters were also an appropriate mix of different east coast varieties to give some extra flavor. It's a bit loud from all the customers, but it doesn't detract from the experience."

  • "Overall, good, but probably overrated. As is the case with many casual places these days, the volume is deafening. Almost impossible to carry on a conversation. And our red wine (Penner Ash Pinot Noir) was served too warm. Again, not bad, but would see no reason to go out of my way to dine here again."

  • "Getting the reservation is the hardest part here. Had to reserve over two weeks ago for a Wednesday night, which was my birthday. The staff made us feel very welcomed and we were seated promptly. There was a nice wine list and we imbibed accordingly. I had the escargot appetizer (very tasty with a slightly different sauce than one expected), and the Moule Frites for the main course. They were good, not fantastic (the frites were a over salted). My wife had the king crab legs an au gratin potatoes which she enjoyed. Our other guests had mixed reviews, but to be honest, they complain wherever we go. The restaurant comped me a rum cake for my birthday, I enjoyed it immensely. We will return."
