Diner Reviews
  • "Took a party of 10 to Le Diplomate and was very disappointed. The onion soup was thin and a bit sweet, the hanger steak was very chewy, almost tough and a bit gamey. This is a sophisticated, lively "bistro" and the expectation is that the regular menu offerings have been perfected. With 10 guests, there was a good menu sampling at the table. There were no accolades coming from anyone, about any dish, except for one of the desserts. When asked directly, their response was that the food was "just average". This was our third dining experience...our first, about 6 months ago was quite good. Our second, just a few months was a bit disappointing. We are hoping this was just another "off" night as the ambience and service are quite good."

  • "Had a great table - one of the front booths, which I really appreciated! Excellent steak & frites, nice french wine (and reasonably priced!), and yummy desserts. All in all - a wonderful evening!"

  • "Le Diplomate seems to be on a mission: to strive every day to be one of the finest restaurants in DC, and never rest on its deserved laurels. We had the skate, which was prepared to lemony perfection. The mushroom tart was also notable, as was the delicious bread. Their cocktails are imaginative, and do evoke dinners in Paris. Nobody does it better on French comfort food!"

  • "Lobster risotto is a must. Great cocktails and wine list."

  • "Not really like a lovely Paris cafe. Guess the main difference is this place is frantic! Lots of people, lots of tables, lots of people waiting to get a table, lots of servers, lots of noise. It's not a relaxing experience; also looking out on a Q street brick wall is not exactly lovely Paris. Food was uneven. Appetizers, desserts, and wine all excellent. Food was just a tad above average. Salmon, Beef Bourguignon, and Roasted Chicken. Not one of us raved. Beef Bourguignon had a bit of an off flavor, something too sharp; meat soft but was a bit charred on the outside. Pomme Puree was almost soup like. Great brûlée and pots du chocolate. Overall almost worth the cost but not the overall effort to get in. Don't wait an hour for sure."

  • "My husband and I celebrated our 30th wedding anniversary at Le Diplomate. We had a wonderful time and were well treated by all the staff, with even the manager coming over a couple of times to make sure all was well and to congratulate us. The good was delightful. My husband's lamb dish and Steak Tartare appetizer was the best he has ever had. Very exciting vibe to the place, and you feel you could be in Paris without having to fly there. Definitely recommend it."

  • "Le Diplomate was our favorite restaurant in DC by far. Their cheese selection was amazing! We went here as a special dinner during our honeymoon in DC and we were not disappointed. My husband LOVED the steak frites (I may have stolen some frites off his plate as well...) and I ordered the escargot as my meal (DELISH!). The bread was fresh and delicious and the chocolate ice cream was to die for. Our waiter was very attentive and the restaurant was super cool inside. Highly, highly recommend!"

  • "You may call the noise level at Le Diplomate "energetic" which is a euphemistic way of saying "very LOUD". It seems that the noise level at most restaurants these days frequented by 20- and 30-somethings is "energetic" which doesn't seem to bother them since they are on their smart phones anyway."

  • "I wish managers from other high-end restaurants along the 14th Street restaurant scene would go to Le Diplomate and learn how to run a restaurant properly. So many restaurants start out great then quickly drop their level of quality - in terms of food AND service. Food is excellent (I have the foie gras parfait every time) and the service is efficient, but discreet. Wine selection is impressive too (and definitely try the various champagne options). You really get your money's worth here."

  • "I just love Le Diplomate. The food is fantastic, the service is always spot on and the restaurant always has a fun and lively vibe. I have been here for business dinners with large groups and small, as well as smaller more intimate dinners and really you can't go wrong. Everything on the menu is fantastic, I have no complaints. The wine list is very good. Lots of interesting and hard to find wines and the servers are very knowledgeable about the selections available. Really nice to addition to the experience. Great restaurant all around. 100% recommend!!"

  • "went here on my bday last Dec. and have been about 6 or 7 times since. This restaurant never disappoints. The staff is attentive yet not overbearing, the food is fresh and seasoned to perfection, and the atmosphere is GREAT! They ALWAYS aim to please....no wonder its so hard to get a reservation!"

  • "I love attentive service, but I do not like feeling hurried. That was our experience at Le Diplomate. My friend and I had not seen each other in a while and were chatting. The waiter kept coming over and asking if we were ready to order when it was pretty clear we weren't (menus closed usually indicates readiness). He was very polite and a nice guy, but it was starting to get irritating. My friend and I each ordered a yogurt, fruit and granola parfait as a starter and then an entree. The yogurt came quickly and was delicious. But again, because we were talking, we weren't scarfing it down. Neither of us were even half done before our entrees came out and a busser was trying to take our parfaits away! Overall good, but I hate being rushed!"

  • "I found the restaurant vibrant, lively without the noise level that creates an uncomfortable situation without not being able to hear the others at your table speak. Enjoyed the indoor/outdoor seating in a neighborhood that is hot. Found the food excellent with the service outstanding but not intrusive. I had noted on my reservation that we were celebrating 2 birthdays, and without reminder, brought dessert with a candle. Outstanding attention to detail!"

  • "My husband and I recently ate at Le Diplomate for our anniversary. The restaurant absolutely lived up to all of its glowing reviews. The service was friendly and we were never rushed. The restaurant was crowded with families, couples, older diners - you name it. A wonderful evening."

  • "You often find that when someplace is a hot spot or very popular, the food or service ends up being less than you hope when you actually get there. We've been here for dinners and brunches and have enjoyed it every time. This is a bistro atmosphere, not a fine dining experience, but quality of the food is high. They menu is kept relatively simple, successfully concentrating on doing what they do well. I'm a real steak tartare snob and theirs was just perfect. They also have some very nice wines at reasonable prices, and it's also a perk that they offer carafes of a quite decent house wine (good for groups when you don't want to drop $50+ per bottle amongst a fun, lushy crowd). They do seem to overbook the reservations a bit, though."

  • "My husband and I had dropped into Le Diplomate a few times just to sit at the bar and have a drink and a bite. But an upcoming trip to Paris prompted me to book a dinner reservation as a tune-up for French meals. I have to say the restaurant lived up to all the hype--both in the food and the service. Although it was busy, our wait person was always there with another pour of wine or inquiry as to how we were doing, but she was never intrusive. We had tasted the mushroom tart before, and it was as good as rememered. My chilled corn soup was delicate and perfect as was the Trout Almondine and special short ribs. Paris has met its match in DC and we can't wait to go back!"

  • "We came to Le Diplomate to celebrate my birthday and had told the person who called to confirm our reservation that we were celebrating. She said that she would make sure that the waiter knew. We were seated quickly when we arrived. The restaurant is charming. Our food was overall very good (we enjoyed the loup de mer, steak frites, pate, and short rib special of the day, as well as the creme brulee and the tarte au citron. I had particularly chosen the restaurant since our daughter had spent a semester abroad living in Paris. The breads were delicious. The restaurant is a bit pricey for bistro cuisine. We were just disappointed that my birthday was never acknowledged in any way."

  • "I have been to this restaurant on multiple occasions, and I can't emphasize enough how delightful an experience it is every time. Stephen Starr takes it to the next level in terms of service and ambiance, and Le Diplomate serves as a superlative example of his vision. This is not only my favorite neighborhood spot, but also my favorite restaurant in a city that I have lived in for 15 years."

  • "Loved the foie gras and seafood. Cheese were excellent. Most notable were the prune and cherry that accompanied the foie gras and cheese board respectively."

  • "My friend and I ate brunch there on 5 July. We arrived early and were seated right away, which was a nice surprise. We ordered the Trout Amandine and Poached Eggs over Polenta (can't remember the dish name). The trout was lick-the-plate good. The egg-polenta dish was tasty but the polenta was much too salty. Luckily we also ordered the potatoes Lyonnaise, and they were superb. Perfectly crispy tender, oniony and just salty enough. My biggest complaint was the server brought the bill even though we hadn't requested it. The restaurant was very busy but I prefer to ask for the bill when I'm ready, not when the server is ready to turn the table."

  • "Had another terrific experience at Le Dip - the food is always spot on but early service hiccups also seem to have been worked out. Brunch is a gerat option for those who cannot get a dinner reservation."

  • "I made a reservation to celebrate my sister's birthday on July 4th. The food, music, service, and ambience was perfect! I ordered the Trout and my sister had the strip steak which were seasoned well and tasted delicious. The mac and cheese was amazing and so was the chocolate moose!!!! My sister was extremely happy and so was I. Our waiter was very attentive and the food was exquisite. I plan on making a few more reservations soon!"

  • "My friend and i had an amazing dinner here. We tried the Escargot, Steak Tartar, and Duck Confit. The duck and the tartar were some of the best of each I've ever had. Will definitely come again! My one complaint is that this place is LOUD! My friend and I frequently had to shout at each other across a small two person table to be heard. Not the best when trying to have a semi-private conversation."

  • "Everything about the restaurant was great except for the noise level. The din was high, making it a strain to hear others speaking in a normal voice at your own table. Still had a great time with traditional bistro fare superbly prepared and served."

  • "My date and I had a fantastic dinner at Le Diplomate. Ambiance was exactly as charming as one would expect. Service was attentive but not hovering (special thanks to our waitress, Gina). And the food was very good. My date had the lobster risotto and I had the steak frites. We also shared a delicious cheese plate (the bleu d'auvergne was our favorite) and had creme brulee for dessert. In the end, the evening felt special and that is exactly what we wanted."

  • "Our request for a good table was honored. Our anniversary was also honored with a complimentary flute of champagne. The service was attentive without being intrusive. The special lobster risotto was incredibly delicious and all the food beautifully presented and enjoyed. Even though the restaurant was hopping we were not at all rushed."

  • "Great food and outstanding service. Amongst the three of us dining, not a morsel was left on the plate. The only criticism is that the noise level in the main dining room is extremely high. Will definitely return again and again"

  • "Le Diplomate is my favorite place to dine in DC. Once again the good and service were superb. Had steak frites, which was perfectly cooked. Friend's steak came out tad over done and was promptly replaced. Servers and manager were very eager to please customers and overall a great experience."

  • "We received exceptional serivce from the moment we walked in the door - the hosts, the waitress, food runners, bussers, managers - top notch. It made the evening for us. It certainly didn't hurt that the food was terrific."

  • "Every aspect of this dining experience was exceptional. Le Diplomate has a great, energetic ambiance. The food is outstanding. The service is great without being annoying. The warm shrimp salad is delicious! The French Onion Soup is great. The Steak Frites is perfect. Highly recommend this restaurant."

  • "Le Diplomate is an energetic (loud) restaurant in a neat neighborhood in DC. The service is very good, and they want you to have a nice experience. The house specialty cocktails are excellent, and their wine list is fairly extensive. A sommelier is on site to help. We started with a dozen raw oysters, and had various entrees. Mine was and incredible omelet, which at first I was hesitant to order for dinner, but was glad I did. It was the highlight of a great dinner. Overall, I recommend Le Diplomate."

  • "It was so hard to choose from the menu. The pate was delicious and it even had pistachios in it! We loved the Endive and Pear salad. Plenty big enough to share. The beef bourguignon and the lamb entrees were so tender. Even the Pot de Creme for dessert was plenty for two, and creamy as could be! Wish we lived in D.C. and could go more often! Service was stellar too!!"

  • "Le Diplomat makes me feel like I'm 20 again. That's because my first two years of college were in Paris and I was in restaurants like Le diplomat several times a week. They nailed it- we'll, except for not having surly waiters. Gotta work on your friendly and helpful staff-get some attitude in there for the true experience. I told my husband this is my favorite restaurant in DC. Great food, great help, great ambiance."

  • "I recently moved from Europe to Washington DC and walk by Le Diplomate a few times a week. While my boyfriend was visiting town, we decided to give it a try, having read so many excellent reviews about it. I was a little bit biased as I love Pastis (in NY) so much and could not help but to compare. Our brunch experience was well beyond our expectations! Not only the suggestions from the menu were right on the spot but our waitress was really considerate and friendly (something that is hard to find in restaurants in Europe). I -or us- will be definitely back to try dinner next time."
