Diner Reviews
  • "Overall, I had a good time at le Diplomate but it is not the top notch French cuisine that I was expected. The foie gras is not foie gras, not even close...it's a cheap version of it but it does taste good. You should avoid the salmon at all price. The fish is actually good but it comes with so called braised cabbage. It's way too strong and kills the flavor of the salmon. Maybe you can have it with another side. The Beef Bourguignon is excellent, one of the best I ever had, but the mashed potatoes look like they are pre made (I don't actually think it is premade, it's just not good). The wine is very expensive and the waiters really push for you to buy more. The serving size is also a bit cheap for the price. Just don't expect too much"

  • "We were celebrating our 31st anniversary and couldn't have asked for a better meal. All the food was incredible, the place is hopping, servers were attentive, and we can't wait to return! Thanks to Eric, the sommelier, for really making our night something special!!!"

  • "Hard to get a table, so just plan to eat at a weird hour or book well in advance. Beoff bourgignon did not disappoint. Neither did the duck or the steak frites."

  • "We love le Diplomate. Every dish has been extremely well prepared. The ambiance is a little noisy, but better than most busy restaurants these days. Service is impeccable. It is not cheap, but definitely worth the price."

  • "Only complaint is it is a little loud, hard to hear people at the table in conversation. But overall the food was great, the service good."

  • "Le Diplomate is still as fine as it was when it opened a year or so ago. It's the perfect combination of food, service, and ambiance. We enjoy it more with each succeeding visit and look forward to the next. Only downside is that there are so many wonderful choices it will take a while to eat our way through the menu. Favorite place in the District."

  • "My food and service were amazing Saturday night. Despite the restaurant being very busy for a Saturday night, my husband and I did not feel rushed in any way and were able to enjoy our wonderful meal. My steak au poivre was AMAZING as well as my creme brulee. I will definitely be back! Thanks!"

  • "i had informed the restaurant that it was a milestone birthday for my husband that day. he was greeted by everyone with birthday wishes and, upon being seated, we were delighted to receive 2 complimentary glasses of champagne. our meal was delicious--a wonderful mushroom tart, salade lyonnaise, short ribs and scallops in a sabayon sauce, followed by an amazing chocolate dessert. server was competent and attentive. would return over and over again."

  • "We had a fabulous meal. The food and service was impeccable. The noise level was high because the place was already pack at 6 PM. it was my wife's birthday and the restaurant staff went out of their way to note it. We will definitely be back."

  • "My boyfriend and I went to the Diplomate for my birthday dinner and absolutely loved it. The food was perfect, but we were even more pleased with the impeccable service. It is expensive, but you absolutely get your money's worth. One note: book far in advance if you'd like to eat dinner at a normal time!"

  • "Everything about this place was great. The food, the service, the decor - simply amazing. Like being on the Champs Elysee."

  • "We had salad and Special. They were OK but nothing special. I was disappointed with COLD BREAD when I eat I expect basket of warm bread. Salad had good flavor but bit too much dressing for me. Bouillabaisse was OK mussels were so small and bit over cook . As mush as you charged you can spend you can buy bigger plump mussels. Not sure if we"ll go back maybe to try mushroom tart ot escargot. Entree may not be good thing to eat here maybe smaller dishs are better."

  • "An authentic bistro, even better than some of the bistros in Paris. Food was delicious, service great, can't say anything bad about my experience."

  • "I would definitely go back again. There are a number of items on the menu I want to go back and try. Everything I tasted was very good. It made me feel like I was back in Paris! We were lucky to have dined early before the crowds. The noise level was lovely until our last half hour. Other than that, it was great fun!"

  • "What a great way to spend a birthday! Classic food done really well. We had escargots, onion soup, veal escalope, steak au poivre, creme brulee. Everything was delicious, creme brulee was the best I've ever had. Superb service - very attentive without being pushy or in the way. Large wine list with many great options."

  • "The only criticism I can give this place, is that when seated in doors, it is too loud and hard to hear people at your own table."

  • "Le Diplomate is truly a neighborhood restaurant. However it is hyped up as for my party of 4 and $300.00 later - the waiter was surly, the food was okay - they dropped a bunch of glasses and sprayed our feet with glass - no apology. The manager was standing right by the kitchen entry and did not gesture or even help the staff to clean up - he just stood there - perhaps this is beneath him. The waiter then placed the order wrong for one of our entrees and we then had to wait for over 5 minutes to get the salad correct. For the prices and the hype this is certainly not the expectation. Au revoir Diplomate - first and last time. BTW the décor is very nice."

  • "We ate at Le Diplomate for the first time this weekend for a birthday celebration and I have been raving about it. You really feel as though you have arrived in Paris (the waiter even had an accent!). The bread is the best (truly) and the food (mushroom tart, tuna tartare carpaccio, steak frites, and beef bourgoignon) were all delicious, beautifully prepared and timely served. The one disappointment was the scallops which were drowned in a gloppy sabayon/béarnaise. Do not miss the very large milk chocolate pot du cream for dessert. It is worth the trip into Logan Circle and the $12 valet parking (not kidding) for a really special dining experience."

  • "At first we were seated at a terrible table in the back of the restaurant right by the waiter station. We asked for a different table and were re-seated in a much nicer area quite quickly. I thought that the food was good but not great. The bread that was served was the standout of the meal for me, especially the bread that came with the radish crudite. The radishes themselves were fresh and crisp - a very original and satisfying appetizer. My entree was the braised lamb with couscous. Again, well-made but not amazing. Overall, I'm glad that I went, but given the cost of our dinner I am not interested in going back. My husband liked the food more than I did, but in general he likes French cuisine more than I do."

  • "Amazing food. Great ambiance. Lots of classics but with modern and local twists. Examples are: le plat du jour SUN - coq au riesling, which was a nice twist on a Winter classic. Also, the fluke ceviche was a more citrus motivated version French versions I've had. The details make this place like a portal to a bistro in France. I also tried the mushroom tart (crunchy and savory, mushrooms and pecorino paired well), the classic onion soup with gruyère that was hearty, the fall off the bone duck confit, addictive escargot. Cant' wait to go again."

  • "Yes, the food is great, but if I have to ask for water, wait for drinks, they don't bring my entire order, and I have to beg to order food and drink, how enjoyable an experience is it? It is worth $100+ dollars for two people for brunch??? There is great food everywhere in DC...service is how places can differentiate themselves. Usually its great at Le Diplomate -- my suspicion is that they are getting complacent. Get back to basics, people. Attention to service is what makes a restaurant great."

  • "As an avid foodie and homecook myself, Le Diplomate ranks high on my DC favorites. The entire brunch was great. A friend and I had reservations and we were immediately seated on arrival, as a true reservation warrants. The service was awesome. The food was incredible (and if there's one things I was impressed with, it came out quick! Especially at such a busy time, that's hard to find in a lot of place.) Overall great visit and will definitely be back!"

  • "Le Diplomate is the perfect spot to grab a late night bite and beverage after attending a performance at The Studio Theater. Great selection for wines by the glass and the best mac and cheese I have ever had! An unexpected treat was the terrific people watching -- definitely a mixed crowd of fun people!"

  • "This was my wife's birthday and I wanted all to go well. The restaurant ambiance was perfect -- a Parisian in DC experience. Service was very good and the wine and appetizers were wonderful. Then the entrees unfortunately arrived ...one was not hot enough... and both were oversalted and virtually inedible. The management reacted with concern and brought several desserts, but unfortunately the perfect romantic had been missed."

  • "We enjoyed the pastry basket, it is required eating if your here for brunch it can not be missed. The mussels were delicious and the restaurant was so adorable, I feel like I have eaten in a restaurant designed just the same in France!"

  • "First, the reservation/hostess staff were excellent. We had a 5pm reservation, but we were running late, so we called and they were very accommodating. When we finally arrived a little after 6, they were very welcoming & pleasant and we got a great table right away. The wait staff service also was very good, no waiting for food or drinks. Regarding the food, the steak tartare was excellent, the mushroom tart was a little cool/too many mushrooms/seemed a little undercooked and the crust was a little too thick. The scallops were wonderful & the pommes frites were excellent. We were a little disappointed with the Bouillabaisse. We enjoyed watching the bar scene."

  • "Not many places on Earth compare to Paris, but Le Diplomate provides one with a little taste of what it's like dining in the"City of Lights!" The food is exquisite and the service superb. The "experience" begins as soon as you enter the door. From start to finish I was teleported back to a top notch Parisian Bistro. A "Must" for anyone looking for great food, service and a friendly experience!"

  • "Le Diplomate is the kind of restaurant you were likely to find in Paris 30 years ago - big and noisy, with eclectic decor and a menu featuring almost every classic French staple - steak frites, bouef bourguignon, onion soup, etc. This was our first visit; we enjoyed it and would probably return."

  • "Authentic and savory French fare, with great service and reasonable prices. Not a single down side to Le Diplomate (except finding a reservation on short notice)."
