A word from Le Colonial
Le Colonial is a truly delightful culinary experience. Like stepping into French Colonial Southeast Asia, this two-story restaurant, designed by Greg Jordan, consists of a main dining room with louvered wall panels, colorful tile floors, and vintage photos of Vietnam. Upstairs is an elegant, but lively, lounge serving a full dinner or just appetizers and cocktails. The lounge serves as an ideal setting for private parties and business dinners. Chef Ronald Wingwee Hsu serves an authentic Vietnamese menu with an emphasis on fresh seafood, meats, and vegetables. Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "This restaurant is one of my favorite and for restaurant week they out did themselves. the food was great as usual and the portions were very generous. The choices were outstanding. Truly a great meal every time I go there."

  • "We have been coming to Le Colonial for the nearly two decades since we were in Vietnam to adopt our youngest daughter. Although the menu and staff has, of course, changed over the years, it has always reminded us of the best about Saigon and Vietnam--ambiance, food, and service. We live in western Massachusetts and only get to New York once or twice a year, but Le Colonial is always a destination and has always brightened our stays in every way."

  • "I have been going to Le Colonial for years and the food and flavors of herbs and spices were fresh and made the palate sing. No more. The food is fresh but the the flavors and sauces that were so special are gone. The soft summer tools were fresh but served with a peanut sauce that was blah. The crispy spring rolls had no taste and the sauce not good. The seafood medly with noodles was extremely bland . The only dish we enjoyed was the spiced duck which was well flavored and very good. What a great culinary loss overall."

  • "On tony East 57th Street, Le Colonial is a lovely place to have a respite from all the heavy-duty designer shops. The ambience, with its palm trees, really feels like a get-away. The food is lovely. We took advantage of Restaurant Week special pricing."

  • "Food and service were good ...the real glitch is the lack of courtesy demonstrated by the hosts, [especially the shorter one, whose name I do not know]. When asked for a different table he was lacking in the social skills required to attend the issue...He did comply, but with no grace and definite annoyance... He strutted the room, asking the required question, even of us, [is everything all right?] never making eye contact or waiting for a reply.. A real downer in an otherwise pleasant, if noisy room."

  • "Le Colonial is typical in ambience/decoration for a French Vietnamese Restaurant. The food was very similar to what I have recently had in Viet Nam. Crispy rolls filled with pork and accompanied with lettuce leaves, carrots, cilantro and mint. Everything to make for a tasty appetizer. I would definitely return for a dinner since I only tried it for lunch."

  • "I used to love Le Colonial. Until restaurant week. The portions are small, the menu is austere, the service is hurried, the over all experience is stale. Few restaurants keep the same quality during the restaurant week and Le Colonial is not one of them."

  • "I LOVED it. Had not been for 15 years and moved back to the city one year ago. The foood was better than I remembered and the service was excellent. My guest was one hour late and the mamangement and wait staff made me feel very comfortable while I enjoyed some delicious wine. I am coming back with my family again this week if possible."

  • "This was our fifth visit to this restaurant. We took friends with us. No one was disappointed. The restaurant week menu is varied. The portions are not skimpy. The specialty cocktails are always interesting-and delicious-like the food. We look forward to returning to this restaurant."

  • "Visited for the first time during restaurant week. Excellent cuisine, superb service, and, without question I will return!"

  • "I just want to say that the people who works there Are so nice and the food very good. I had to change my reservation and they totally nice and smiling attend my wife and me 15 minutes to close the kitchen . Totally recommend the place . A romantic ambient"

  • "in San Francisco! This one was okay...I wasn't displeased but the food was average. Brussel sprouts were hard, not throughly cooked. The mushroom side was excellent. But its just not top notch or fresh...seemed a little tired to me."

  • "The fried fish (ca chien) was exactly like my mother's cooking. Crunchy exterior with flaky meat. Although some of the other dishes were not authentic Vietnamese cooking, they were still tasty and satisfied the palate. The green tea mousse crepe is a misnomer: it is not a crepe and the mousse had too much gelatin. The Vietnamese coffees did not disappoint."

  • "I love the lounge, in fact the past 2 times I've been here I have requested to sit there since you can still order off the regular menu. It has a great ambiance with comfy seating. We shared the Crispy Duck Rolls and Bo Luc Lac along with the Berries and Cream dessert. All were delicious as usual. I particularly like the Bo Luc Lac since the steak with the watercress is just right when it comes to the portion size and of course it is cooked perfectly to my request. Service never disappoints here--attentive without being intrusive or rushing us."

  • "We have been to LeColonial several times, and it never disappoints. This time it was before the theater and we were only two. We sat upstairs which we hadn't done before. It was perfect for two! The ambience quiet, charming and romantic. Our dinner and the service was excellent. I had the chopped salad with chicken, an appetizer which was enough for an entree. We will go back for sure and sit upstairs again!"

  • "Delicious Vietnamese food in a lovely. 'Colonial' setting. We went with people who really know this cuisine and we all enjoyed our meals. Also the service was attentive and the noise level normal Altogether an adult experience"

  • "Service as always was excellent. The Duck Rolls were Outstanding as were the Grilled Shrimp and Scallops. The bed of vegetables was too wet and somewhat tasteless - not the norm at Le Colonial."

  • "A quiet place of respite on busy 57th Street. Very good service. However, I found the food quite disappointing. An introductory papaya salad (with poached chicken!!) was watery, lacked any hint of spice, and was overall very bland; not even a hint of lime! The fish appetizer was much too salty, barely edible. A main dish of vermicelli with shrimp and scallops was, like the papaya sale, watery and extremely bland. The roast pork main dish was fine, served on a bed of sprouts. The only item we wholeheartedly agreed on was an excellent side dish of brussels sprouts. Although not overly expensive, Le Colonial was unfortunately a real disappointment food wise. My favorite--Vietnamese coffee--was completely wrongly made. Disappointed."

  • "Consistency is the key word. You always get a great meal. You dip the food in all their wonderful sauces and you marvel at the taste. It certainly is a neighborhood gem. Whoever i recommend it to is always as pleased as I am with this top notch place."

  • "I hadn't been back to Le Colonial for a while, and I' so glad we returned. The food is very good, and of high quality. We loved the monkfish and eggplant appetizers, and the 5 spice duck. The wines are a bit pricey, but the charming captain had an excellent recommendation which we thoroughly enjoyed"

  • "Dining at Le Colonial is like stepping back into another time and place. It's an oasis of calm and sanity after the craziness of 57th street. The food is first rate and the service impeccable. There isn't a dish on the menu I wouldn't order. Drawback: very expensive cocktails with giant cube of ice taking up 3/4 of the glass. Literally. Ask for no ice or very little ice. Very fun place to go with a group but also great for lunch with a friend or client. Even the desserts are good. Leave full and happy, but not overstuffed. Delicious place."

  • "If you are in the mood for an elegant hideaway feeling kind of place then this is the restaurant for you. The ambience is enchanting; it is an escape to an exotic meeting place. The food is wonderful. The best thing is the appetizer, "Aubergines"."

  • "This was sophisticated Asian eating at it's best. The old-school interior, impeccable food and attentive service made this the stand-out meal of our time in NYC. Light and zesty summer rolls to start, beautifully cooked shrimp and scallops with a Thai noodle salad, and a more-ish chocolate tart to follow. My only grumble was that we weren't offered a choice of iced water, and were automatically upsold a $9 bottle of water we can get for less than $2 back home. Three courses, beer, and the now-infamous $9 water came to $170 including tax and gratuity."

  • "My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed dining at Le Colonial. We had a 6:15pm reservation on a Thursday for pre-theater dining and enjoyed each course and was done in plenty of time to see our show at 8pm. The monkfish appetizer was delicious! I would highly recommend it! Both our entrees were delicious and very flavorful! It was a thoroughly enjoyable evening with just the right amount of attention from our server."

  • "We were in NYC for a week with our 20-month old and it so happens our anniversary was midweek. We went out to LeColonial as it was just steps from our hotel and we could not have been more pleased. The ambiance is sublime, the staff so professional, and food and drinks were delicious. We wish The Apollo cocktail was widely available instead of their specialty. We'd fly back just to have it! We asked for an out of the way corner spot just incase our toddler acted up, but he was cooperative and enjoyed the dining experience with us. We definitely plan to be back the next time we are in NY."

  • "This is a very beautiful restaurant with good service--and it's not outrageously priced. The food was ok--nothing notable. Certainly not lousy but only a bit above mediocre. If you're not a gourmand it's certainly a lovely place for dinner."

  • "It had been a while since we had been there, and it was nice to see that after all these years Le Colonial still delivers on food, service and ambiance. Few restaurants last as long, and those that do usually end up being nowhere near what they were at the beginning. Le Colonial is still a wonderful food destination. Upstairs lounge is romantic, wine recommendations were spot on, service was elegant without being overbearing and the food -- the true test -- was delicious and sophisticated. But I guess you don't last this long in this town unless you are doing something right, and Le Colonial is. We won't wait so long until our next trip. Highly recommended."

  • "We like a lot Vietnamese food and we find this restaurant very close to our hotel. This was a great surprise with super tasty food with amazing Vietnamese taste. We recommend the pho and the ravioli. But don't miss the main course with super good chicken and sea bass."

  • "On my way to a show, I chose the theater menu. I received the same excellent service and exquisite presentation and meal as a la carte. Every member of the team clearly shows pride for their work, their dining room, and most importantly, the dishes. Though they are one of the oldest residents of 57th Street, they fit perfectly on "Billionaire's Row" of today. Expectations met and surpassed!"

  • "The food was as good Vietnamese as I have had. Had (2) single malt neat and drink was a bit small. Service was good but had to request some items requested more than once. Manager was professional and very helpful. We were in Vietnam recently and room brought us back to feeling like we were still there. Would recommend this restaurant to friends."
