A word from Le Colonial
Le Colonial is a truly delightful culinary experience. Like stepping into French Colonial Southeast Asia, this two-story restaurant, designed by Greg Jordan, consists of a main dining room with louvered wall panels, colorful tile floors, and vintage photos of Vietnam. Upstairs is an elegant, but lively, lounge serving a full dinner or just appetizers and cocktails. The lounge serves as an ideal setting for private parties and business dinners. Chef Ronald Wingwee Hsu serves an authentic Vietnamese menu with an emphasis on fresh seafood, meats, and vegetables. Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "Good to see quality has held up over the years. Wat staff very friendly and good was excellent!"

  • "Been going to Le Colonial since it opened 25 yrs. ago. It's a beautiful place....takes you to another era and place (Saigon 30s) the menu has recently changed and some old favorites like shrimp with sugar cane and spareribs are unfortunately gone. Reception is welcoming, waiters rather lackluster and disinterested. Food selection nothing special and not particularly great - OK at best. Prices have gone up. Try the Vietnamese coffee. Disappointing."

  • "Le Colonial is a refreshing find in the city. The food is superb, the environment welcoming, and the staff very professional."

  • "I've been to Le Colonial about 6 or 7 times across about 4 or 5 years. It is a special place. The food is Vietnamese but it is presented in a sophisticated way. Always delicious. The French sounding name probably relates to the fact that France was heavily involved in Vietnam before we became involved in the war there. Beyond the great food is the ambience of the place. It has slow moving fans, and fake windows with colonial type shutters. There are tall plants that screen some of the tables. It is beautiful and relaxing. It makes you believe you might be in Vietnam (or Charleston, SC). It is a great restaurant!"

  • "Fun, colorful drinks (though very sweet!) and good not great food. Nice service, very professional. Did not feel rushed. Would go back! A bit pricey, though."

  • "Wonderful decor, a la Rick's Cafe in Casablanca. In addition to a wonderful menu, you can actually hear the person with whom you are dining, a rare experience in NYC restaurants these days, where someone has decreed that "louder is better"."

  • "This was our first dining experience at Le Colonial. The service was good and the food was a pleasant departure from a typical "Vietnamese food" that are often done very poorly elsewhere. The food tasted very fresh. Highly recommended."

  • "We went to Le Colonial to celebrate my duaghter's birthday. She loves French cuisine but wanted something a different. This is upscale Vietnamese. The food was terrific and the service could not have been better. I highly recommend it."

  • "Le Colonial has been around for 20 years and just renewed it's lease for another 15. There is a good reason why they will be in business for 35 years. CONSISTENCY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

  • "The food always meets expectations; service is professional."

  • "Food quality and style corresponds well to upscale restaurants we have visited in Vietnam. Some interesting twists on traditional recipes. Great décor evokes colonial building. Service was good and did not rush us at all. The dining room is large and there were several large groups but somehow they manage the noise very well so a quiet conversation is easy. Price level moderately high but not out of line considering the quality and neighborhood Highly recommended, we will go back."

  • "Lovely setting, wonderful, imaginative menu and friendly, attentive staff. Highly recommend you try it."

  • "This was a return visit and they delivered once again. The food is inspiring and you look forward to each course. We brought our daughter (7) and although she was the only child in the place, the matre d' made her feel most welcome. They do it right here. If you are looking to try really good Vietnamese food, put Le Colonial on your must stops for your next visit to NYC."

  • "Food was good but a bit pricey. The Manager or Host (not sure which) seemed to be tolerating me and my son. We were a little more casually dressed than many of the others dining. I did enjoy the meal, I did like the atmosphere and the noise level was moderately low which I enjoyed. It enabled conversation without straining to hear."

  • "Second time here and dined in the lounge this time. Very nice ambiance, wasn't too crowded and we were able to talk without being on top of other diners. Shared the Trio entree and a Banana Tarte which were excellent, just as they were the first time I was here. Service was good, attentive but we were never rushed and had an enjoyable evening. Overall, really nice place that you should try."

  • "I've been coming here for the past 20 years and Le Colonial is still one of my favorites!"

  • "The food and service at Le Colonial was outstanding. My friend and I shared an eggplant seafood appetizer that was very tasty. I particularly liked a chocolate dessert with peanuts and ice cream. The main negative is that prices are a bit high. Entrees do not include rice which must be ordered separately at extra cost. With a shared appetizer and dessert, wine for my friend but not for me and two main courses, the check before tip came to more than $110."

  • "The food was excellent with great service and a charming sommelier, I recommend highly the sea bass and the green tea crepe. The appetizers are just amazing."
    Dined on 3/17/2014
  • "We ate here for lunch in the summer and it was memorable enough to try it for dinner. The only complaint I have is the tables against the wall are very close together so it is hard to have a private conversation. The food and service is excellent."

  • "I stumbled upon their Chicago location first about a year ago and when I find out the original one was in NY, i just had to get there! We were warmly greeted at the door and brought to a cozy table. Like the Chicago location, the ambience is breathtaking. You are quickly transported to the French Indochina era. The cocktail, beer and wine selections are all great & very well thought out. The food was very good as well as the service. Our server was very nice, knowledgeable & attentive. I must say that the food was a bit better & cocktail list more creative & extensive at the Chicago location. Nevertheless, we had a wonderful dining experience. I will definitely return & look forward to checking out the lovely lounge upstairs!"

  • "Downstairs area is relatively quiet, good for relaxed conversation. Plenty of room at the tables. Service unobtrusive and professional. Food has a Vietnamese accent, but actually is Americanized high-end restaurant fare. The roasted salmon entree and monkfish appetizer were well-prepared, as were other seafood dishes. Upstairs is a bar where there's probably more action."

  • "This was our first time dining at Le Colonial. We decided to try it because of restaurant week. It was outstanding! We were greeted warmly as if we were regular diners. Our departure was just as attentive and warm. Our waiter was attentive without being intrusive. The rest of the staff was also professional. The food was outstanding-beautifuly presented and generous portions, as well as delicious. We are looking forward to returning."

  • "Have eaten here several times and the food is always good. This time we chose to eat upstairs in the Lounge which is warm, elegant and like a beautiful movie set. The full menu is available upstairs, but note the furniture is low so don't do something silly like order soup or anything that necessitates leaning over your plate. On an early week night the Lounge was relaxed and not crowded. We had excellent and prompt service. This restaurant is very well staffed."

  • "The restaurant, atmosphere and food were good but we booked thorugh a special offer of 25$ because of the restaurants week and they said to us in situ the offer is not available during the weekends. This should be informed beforehand!"
    Dined on 2/22/2014
  • "Decor is nice, food is good. However, they did not have a table ready for us in the dining area which kind of annoyed me."
    Dined on 2/26/2014
  • "Although when it'spacked, it's chaotic, the upstairs Lounge on off days is a delight -- warm wood, greenery and comfy chairs. The food, while pricey for Asian, is very good and creative. Fab drinks. Cool spot."

  • "I went for Restaraunt Week. The menu had great choices. I started with the salad and then had the salmon. Both were teriffic. I would definately go back."
    Dined on 2/21/2014
  • "Lovely food. We went for restaurant week, shared the duck spring rolls and charred green beans for appetisers, then went to wok fried prawns and salmon. The cinnamon ice cream for dessert was overwhelmingly cinnamon - a nice surprise."
    Dined on 2/21/2014
  • "It is quite beautiful, in a restful, non-NYC way. NOT trendy. NOT noisy. The service is considerate and just right. The food may not be the most exciting around, but it is consistently good and sufficiently interesting to be well worth a visit. It's like stepping into another world, a better one."

  • "Restaurant week allows one to try a place that you would not ordinarily go to..so it was here..we enjoyed our lunch..food different and well prepared..table and settings were beautiful and welcoming..we had one small complaint in that the busboy was usually rushing the removal of items from our table and in some cases before we were done with them..we would definitely return."
