Diner Reviews
  • "Been to the restaurant many times. Very disappointed in the food and service, and they sat my party of four (made the reservation weeks ago) literally in the doorway to the front entrance. I will not return - ever."

  • "French Vietnamese food in a lovely ambiance. Very knowledgeable waiter - on target with recommendations. Caring service - delicious food - wonderful dining experience!"

  • "What a delight, an engaged and interested waiter who was attentive but not overbearing. The food was wonderful from the cocktails to dessert. A new go to place for special moments."

  • "I hadn't been to Le Colonial since 2010 and wondered if it was still as good. It was, just as I remembered! Friendly but restrained, refined service. The food - fantastic. I had the tofu salad, which has the most incredible mix of flavors, and textures. My boyfriend said the pho was a bit too sweet. The shrimp-wrapped cane sugar was perhaps the best app ever. Light but satisfying, just what a girl wants for a romantic dinner! And it amazes me how the restaurant can be full, and vibrant, and yet you can hear your date and have a quiet conversation. I will go back!"

  • "Le Colonial continues to be a great place for a special meal. The atmosphere takes you back to a different time, and the servers are attentive, knowledgeable and friendly. The Vietnamese food is always good, and there are even several vegetarian/vegan items on the menu. Great place for groups or romantic dinner for two."

  • "We had wonderful appetizers, & my sister's entree (chicken in a curry sauce) was superb. Mine was only okay (shrimp, scallops, calamari, vegetables, & rice noodles -- mostly veggies & noodles)."

  • "Le Colonial is the perfect spot for a lovely lunch. The food is fabulous and the service is, too. You can hear each other talk without yelling and yet, the environment is lively and friendly."

  • "Came here for dinner with my gf and her sister and I was not disappointed. The environment itself was very nice but lets get to the food. We all started off with the pho and wow it was incredible. The broth was rich and beefy with a nice herb-y finish while the beef itself was melt in your mouth fantastic. We also got the rice paper dumplings which was a bit of a let down flavor wise, it was just a little too light with not a lot of chicken flavor or any other flavoring as well. For the entree I got the filet with the shrimp and tomato rice pilaf and salad. The steak was incredible and like the meat in the broth it melted in your mouth which went well with the rice. however the salad was a little too sweet for my taste."

  • "The place remains a local gem. I was absent for a number of years and returned to identical and better fare! The service was pushy and more concerned about the popular dishes then the actual recommendations of the chef(hidden gems) but overall a great time. It was a bit on the pricy side as well..."

  • "The Pho was excellent. The rest of our meal was very good. We sat outside so the service was lacking but having stepped inside, the ambiance was that of a 5 star restaurant. I would come back... if I lived in Chicago but I know there is one here in NY as well so I will be trying them out. Gluten Free options are available and the Pho is gluten free when ordered without the plum sauce."

  • "The food was awesome. Service was great. Wait staff were friendly and helpful."

  • "The restaurant remains a fun evening out. The ambiance is striking on entrance, and the host's greeting is pleasant, if not a little cool. The starters were varied, and our waiter made some great recommendations. The menu is somewhat limited, but the fish selections are tasty and well prepared, especially the trout dish. All 5 of our entrees were enjoyed, however the shrimp entree was slightly too spicy. The vietnamese coffee was a great finish to the meal."

  • "I have not been to this restaurant for 2-3 years. This past Monday evening, I was treating a friend from out of town to dinner and decided to make reservations through Open Table. I selected Le Colonial with a special request to sit outside in the upstairs balcony. As reservations were early pm - my wish came true. Service at this restaurant impeccable! The food is creative and flavorful."

  • "I was looking for something different in Chicago and I found Le Colonial. I never thought it would be so good. Food was interesting in terms of different flavors and ingredients. Service was very good. If you go there, my advice is to share dishes so you can try different things."

  • "First dined here 15 years ago, and it's still as wonderful and memorable as it was before. Highly recommended!"

  • "The restaurant is decorated in a very charming and interesting way. I was a bit disappointed with the food. I thought it was very similar to other Asia restaurants I have been to. I expected something more exotic. My martini was excellent though."

  • "Vietnamese at its finest. Love the spring rolls, fried rice and jumbo shrimp!"

  • "The atmosphere is really spectacular - for a good date or special occasion it's hard to beat. The food is very good, but for the money it needs to be the best Vietnamese food you've ever had in your life. It is not that. But as long you know that's what you're getting into, don't hesitate. It's a great night."

  • "Upon arrival, my gf and I were seated off kind of in a corner where I guess initially the server forgot about us. Thankfully though, our food came out pretty fast. My review on Asian food would be biased because I am Asian and I would have to say even for fusion food, it was mediocre. I can understand why a lot of people would like to try this place because the French aspect makes it fancier than it really is and the ambiance really gives sort of a luxurious feel. Aside from the few bugs I found flying around and the hair in my gf's rice this place was ok."

  • "We were surprised with the quality of the food and the great service. We reserved via OpenTable and at the time we arrived everything was ready, with actually more than one option of table to sit. Certainly recommend, it was the best restaurant we went in Chicago."

  • "Food was excellent and service was truly amazing!"

  • "It was disappointing to have indicated on my Open Table comment section that I had food allergies; gave my list of allergies to the wait person, who showed it to the chef; received my dinner with chives in it that were on my "NO" list; and was not given an option for rice, but was served white rice - brown would have been preferred (or don't they have any brown rice in their kitchen?). I won't rush back."

  • "A friend from Chicago told us not to miss it. He couldn't be more right. Very nice decor, amazing dishes. DO NOT MISS THE FRIED RICE!"

  • "I have been coming to Le Colonial for over a decade and it never changes in the sense that it is still a special place each visit. The atmosphere is inviting, the tables are spacious and you never feel crammed in; the service is impeccable and the food...oh the food. So delicious. I have travelled to Vietnam several times and always seem to compare the food I have there with this restaurant. Hard to find anything on their menu that isn't authentic and simply delicious."

  • "I am visiting from Belgium and I selected the restaurant because I wanted to invite my Vietnamese friend who is living in the US. The food was excellent and I was very much impressed about the interior design of the restaurant. It was very authentic and it really felt like being in Vietnam one age ago… Very original and the food and wine was superb !"

  • "Took two Miami friends to LeColonial. Sat outside on a perfect evening. Miami's South Beach may have thongs to admire, but Rush Street in Chicago has throngs to admire. The food was great. Service perfect."

  • "Dining on the balcony by a warm summer day is a fantastic experience, with a colonial feel as the restaurant wants to transmit, and it works out. Since the food and the wine are excellent, this makes this restaurant quite special. Was my last day in Chicago, after 15 years working in the windy city, and I chose this restaurant (while I did many Chicago restaurant over all this time), that says it all. Cheers!"

  • "The hidden gem here is the upstairs balcony, which technically is outside but with an ample roof structure that protects the area so much that you get the benefits of an outside view but with sufficient protection from the elements to cut any chill, wind, drizzle, etc. It is relatively small, so it also cuts the noise from the main part of the restaurant (which can be lively) to a conversation-conducive level."

  • "My husband and I took 2 friends to Le Colonial, where we go every time we come to Chicago (we are from Virginia). But this was the last time: although I made a reservation, I could not get a table downstairs. The reception was unfriendly. The wine and the appetizers (esp. Vietnamese Raviolis) were excellent, but all four entrees were really mediocre. I did not recognize the cooking we used to love. Sorry to have to tell you that it was our last time."

  • "Great food and service. I had the bouillabaisse which is outstanding. I will come back here every time I come to Chicago."

  • "The server that started at our table was rude & very unhelpful. I think she realized that we were not too happy with her because suddenly we found ourselves with a different server. Thank goodness. Second server much more helpful and pleasant. Overall most of what we had was good but not over the top delicious where you can't wait to get back."

  • "We took a colleague to Le Colonial Friday, it was here last day. We had a nice booth, the service was great, and the food was superb. I do like Le Colonial a lot. It was my second time there and it did not disappoint."

  • "I patronized Le Colonial 15 years ago when I lived in Chicago, and it's exactly as I remembered - good food, great service, and wonderful ambience. The wine list, while not tremendous, is interesting and has a lot of affordable choices. The appetizers are especially good and can make a meal in themselves. Sit upstairs and outside if you can. But do go."
    Dined on 7/23/2014
  • "Le Colonial is a treasure! The service is wonderful and the food supercedes any expectations...You've got to try the monkfish and the mango margarita...Just...I can't even explain all of the goodness present in those two items, let alone the selections from the entire menu. Go right now!"

  • "Food was trully excellent, the ambiance of the restaurant is really nice and very well fitted to the name. I strongly recommend to try it."
    Dined on 7/22/2014
  • "Le Colonial has a wonderful interior: all throw-back tropical savoir. Service is efficient, non-intrusive. But the food: what a letdown. Our monkfish appetizer was so overbearingly spicy, any fish would have sufficed. Our other appetizer - crab and asparagus soup - was an odd egg drop-like (Vietnamese? Come on!) soup with little to no flavor, except mild stock-like taste. Had this bland liquid met the fiery monkfish in the galley somewhere, these appetizers might've been something. Our main course - bass in sauce - was borderline bland and uninteresting. Clearly this place is all about the ambience; our sense is, the food, like the colonialists' concern for the wellbeing of the people they subjugated, has long been secondary."

  • "I have been twice so far this summer; once with my girlfriend to celebrate a birthday and once to host my family from out of town. Both times the food has been wonderful, particularly the grilled shrimp appetizer and the Sup Do Bien bouillabaisse."
    Dined on 7/19/2014
  • "It is hard to say whether we were more impressed with the helpful and courteous wait staff or the feeling that we had been transported to French Indochina of the 1920s, but the one thing that is certain is that every bite of food was prepared brilliantly. We left feeling like it would take a number of visits to run out of delectable choices."

  • "It has been 10 years since I lived in Chicago, but I had to come back and eat here one more time and it did not disappoint. The food is refreshing and delicious. The service and ambience is outstanding. It is a mix of urban sophistication and vacation retreat...a delight."
