A word from Le Colonial - Chicago
Le Colonial transports guests to another time and place, vividly recapturing the beauty, romance and spirit of 1920's French-Colonial Southeast Asia. Le Colonial invigorates the senses with exquisite décor and savory authentic Vietnamese cuisine. Le Colonial offers two unique dining options: The first floor dining room is adorned with louvered shutters, woven rattan chairs, potted palms, slow-moving ceiling fans and nostalgic black and white photos of turn-of-the century life in Saigon. The upstairs lounge includes a spacious, fully stocked mahogany bar, plush couches for enjoying light fare, dining tables and a veranda, for keeping warm in winter and cool in summer. Complete with unique, delicately prepared Vietnamese cuisine, Le Colonial is the perfect setting for an after-work social or a romantic evening for two.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "Great food and service. I had the bouillabaisse which is outstanding. I will come back here every time I come to Chicago."

  • "The server that started at our table was rude & very unhelpful. I think she realized that we were not too happy with her because suddenly we found ourselves with a different server. Thank goodness. Second server much more helpful and pleasant. Overall most of what we had was good but not over the top delicious where you can't wait to get back."

  • "We took a colleague to Le Colonial Friday, it was here last day. We had a nice booth, the service was great, and the food was superb. I do like Le Colonial a lot. It was my second time there and it did not disappoint."

  • "I patronized Le Colonial 15 years ago when I lived in Chicago, and it's exactly as I remembered - good food, great service, and wonderful ambience. The wine list, while not tremendous, is interesting and has a lot of affordable choices. The appetizers are especially good and can make a meal in themselves. Sit upstairs and outside if you can. But do go."

  • "Le Colonial is a treasure! The service is wonderful and the food supercedes any expectations...You've got to try the monkfish and the mango margarita...Just...I can't even explain all of the goodness present in those two items, let alone the selections from the entire menu. Go right now!"

  • "Food was trully excellent, the ambiance of the restaurant is really nice and very well fitted to the name. I strongly recommend to try it."

  • "Le Colonial has a wonderful interior: all throw-back tropical savoir. Service is efficient, non-intrusive. But the food: what a letdown. Our monkfish appetizer was so overbearingly spicy, any fish would have sufficed. Our other appetizer - crab and asparagus soup - was an odd egg drop-like (Vietnamese? Come on!) soup with little to no flavor, except mild stock-like taste. Had this bland liquid met the fiery monkfish in the galley somewhere, these appetizers might've been something. Our main course - bass in sauce - was borderline bland and uninteresting. Clearly this place is all about the ambience; our sense is, the food, like the colonialists' concern for the wellbeing of the people they subjugated, has long been secondary."

  • "I have been twice so far this summer; once with my girlfriend to celebrate a birthday and once to host my family from out of town. Both times the food has been wonderful, particularly the grilled shrimp appetizer and the Sup Do Bien bouillabaisse."

  • "It is hard to say whether we were more impressed with the helpful and courteous wait staff or the feeling that we had been transported to French Indochina of the 1920s, but the one thing that is certain is that every bite of food was prepared brilliantly. We left feeling like it would take a number of visits to run out of delectable choices."

  • "It has been 10 years since I lived in Chicago, but I had to come back and eat here one more time and it did not disappoint. The food is refreshing and delicious. The service and ambience is outstanding. It is a mix of urban sophistication and vacation retreat...a delight."

  • "Still the best Viet-French fussion in Chicago, and Inever found its better in the US, or outside France for thag matter. Food impecable, nice setting, and received us nicely on busy Friday night."

  • "We and another couple dined at Le Colonial for the first time on a Thursday evening. From the moment we entered, we were treated like everyone who worked there was glad we came! Our waiter Terry was perfect for a first time patron as he expertly guided us through the menu. This restaurant is perfect for sharing plates. Terry suggested sharing the Pho soup. Delicious broth filled with tender pieces of beef and cellophane noodles and fresh scallions. Then to an appetizer of chicken "ravioli" Vietnamese style. Again delicious, tender and served in a vinegar based sauce! Instead of ordering an entree per person, we order their special pork fried rice, a chicken curry dish and a beef and noodle dish. ALL were awesome. Will be back soon!"

  • "I have heard of this restaurant but have never been. Finally, after repeated recommendation from friends, I tried it w/ my son and a friend. LOVED it!! great food and innovative cocktails. The ambience is superb. We chose not sit outside but I could see that that would have been great as well. Service was excellent too. I love the location in this trendy gold coast area of Chicago."

  • "We loved our food on Saturday evening. It was a great spot for dinner. We wanted something cozy and good but not stuffy."

  • "Le Colonial never disappoints. Outstanding food, atmosphere and service. It is so nice to go to a restaurant where they take all three elements of dining equally important--and service is definitely a standout."

  • "We have been to this restaurant twice and each time it was great. The food is a little different from what you will find elsewhere. It tends to be very favorable but not overly spicy. The service was outstanding and the atmosphere almost a little old fashion, meaning nice. We had a variety of dishes and everyone was uniformly pleased, including a friend who is not normally adventurous and does not like spicy food. I will look forward to a return visit."

  • "I am in town for a conference and happened upon Le Colonial while strolling in the city. My party and I were in the mood for Asian food and were seated outside. The French Vietnamese cuisine was light, full of complex flavors and absolutely delicious. The wine list was impressive and our waiter provided impeccable service. Highly recommend this restaurant."

  • "We have been 4 times in the past 2 weeks and love it each time: lunch & Dinner. We had our adult children with different tastes all giving great reviews for the food. Sitting upstairs is a great location next to the bar with lounge chairs. Something to suit everyone and fun to have a taste of Vietnam in our own backyard!"

  • "This restaurant was highly recommended to us for its food and ambiance. Overall, we had a great experience here, but what would have improved it further would have been if it had upheld its own policy of "appropriate attire required" (hanging in the entryway). There were couples in shorts, and notably a guy with a backwards ball cap and flip flops."

  • "Loved all the items that we ordered for our dinner! Generous serving size! Very unique menu!"

  • "After many great meals over the years, my wife and I were disappointed in every respect. It's no longer on our Top Chicago list"

  • "They cater for the rich. There was a Lamborghini parked right outside. The vehicle owner would rev the car obnoxiously and have his car alarm as well. It definitely put a damper on our lunch. I wished that someone from the restaurant would have said something. Other than that, food was great as usual."

  • "The food at this French-Viatnamese restaurant is very tasty and the service is impeccable. This is a very classy restaurant and every visi to this one and the one in San Francisco has been second to none."

  • "We were fortunate enough to get a table upstairs on the balcony overlooking Rush Street on a perfect night in Chicago. The service was excellent, and the food was good, but not as special as I remember it being when they first opened. Overall it was a very nice experience but a little pricey for what was served."

  • "Most impressed by the spring rolls and the rice. The pork fried rice was amazing. Entrees were good, not great. Our waiter was terrific; a great help in navigating/comprehending the menu."

  • "Overall very good to excellent experience. Service was top notch. The restaurant was listed as French-Vietnamese but it was more on the Vietnamese side. There was a wide variety of choices on the menu and portions sizes were perfect. Appetizers were good for sharing at the table. Food taste of the entries was very good but not out of this world."

  • "We enjoyed our meal. The service was perfect. The water glasses were never empty. The waiter was brilliant. The food was exceptional. I will return to this restaurant when I'm back in Chicago. You can actually have a conversation. Everyone was incredibly friendly. Oh and the food. It was A++"

  • "Beautiful atmosphere. It's what makes me want to return more than the food. Disappointed we could not go upstairs due to party. We both thought trout was underwhelming. Wouldn't order again. Thought tofu veggie stir fry was good. Service was very good."

  • "Our dinner club went to Le Colonial for the first time this past weekend and loved it. The ambiance was perfect, the waitstaff was attentive and knowledgable and the food and drinks were amazing. We had nothing but great things to say about it. Thank you for the wonderful experience!"

  • "Food and service second to none. Decor is possibly the best we have ever seen anywhere. and we are not youngsters. The ox-tail soup is addictive and is a must try."

  • "This is one of my favorite restaurants and I was ecstatic to have my in-laws try this place out...extremely happy that they had a gluten free menu for my mother in-law...but the food was fantastic for everyone. Every time I come I am happy that my favorite appetizer Chia Gio is still present and delicious - although I wish it was also served with a side of vermicelli noodles! But every dish on the menu is fantastic! Keep up the fabulous consistency!!"

  • "I have literally eaten at Le Colonial 2-3 nights in a row on some visits, so I am technically "a fan," as are most of my close friends. This time, I brought my beau and was so excited to share this little gem with him. A little disappointing. Don't get me wrong, the food was still delish... but the service lacked, well... service. In short: 5 min wait for menus, talked into a different appetizer which wasn't as flavorful as my original choice, very cool and they ran out of blankets for outdoor seating, 15 min wait for drinks, appetizers delivered on top of the entrees, no checking on us, flatware removed from our appetizer plates and plopped on the table so that we would reuse, etc."
