Le Colonial transports guests to another time and place, vividly recapturing the beauty, romance and spirit of 1920's French-Colonial Southeast Asia. Le Colonial invigorates the senses with exquisite décor and savory authentic Vietnamese cuisine. The first floor dining room is adorned with louvered shutters, woven rattan chairs, potted palms, slow-moving ceiling fans and nostalgic black and white photos of turn-of-the century life in Saigon. The upstairs lounge includes a spacious, fully stocked mahogany bar, plush couches for enjoying light fare, and a veranda, for keeping warm in winter and cool in summer. Complete with unique, delicately prepared Vietnamese cuisine, Le Colonial is the perfect setting for an after-work social or a romantic evening for two.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "I am in town for a conference and happened upon Le Colonial while strolling in the city. My party and I were in the mood for Asian food and were seated outside. The French Vietnamese cuisine was light, full of complex flavors and absolutely delicious. The wine list was impressive and our waiter provided impeccable service. Highly recommend this restaurant."

  • "We have been 4 times in the past 2 weeks and love it each time: lunch & Dinner. We had our adult children with different tastes all giving great reviews for the food. Sitting upstairs is a great location next to the bar with lounge chairs. Something to suit everyone and fun to have a taste of Vietnam in our own backyard!"

  • "We stumbled upon this restaurant & it was very good. Indian style food, the sauces were very good. We went there each time we were in Chicago. First time we were there we sat upstairs. No real atmosphere where they sat us at a two top in the middle of a walk way & it was very dark. The food was good enough for us to go the second time & we were seated on the main floor which was really nice. Our table was a little too close to an inappropriate couple conversation after too much alcohol which the manager came & apologized & offered us dessert. Which was REALLY good! I will go back!"

  • "This restaurant was highly recommended to us for its food and ambiance. Overall, we had a great experience here, but what would have improved it further would have been if it had upheld its own policy of "appropriate attire required" (hanging in the entryway). There were couples in shorts, and notably a guy with a backwards ball cap and flip flops."

  • "Loved all the items that we ordered for our dinner! Generous serving size! Very unique menu!"

  • "The food is more Vietnamese than French with several sweet & spicy choices, excellent spring rolls, seafood, chicken, beef and noodles -- interesting but definitely something for everyone on the menu. Atmosphere is wicker/palm not too dark (though the bar area is) and energetic -- not overly loud unless you are seated next to someone shrill who has had too many drinks. Servers are excellent -- just grade-A and top notch. Can't wait to go back."

  • "After many great meals over the years, my wife and I were disappointed in every respect. It's no longer on our Top Chicago list"

  • "My only worry from other reviews was that this was just expensive Vietnamese food, a type of cuisine typically lower in price. I eat plenty of pho and have even been to Vietnam. This is really good food! It is excellently prepared, well-developed flavors, each dish w/ its own distinct flavor and level of spice. The bouillabaisse was exquisite. Too bad I don't live in Chicago, I'd be back just for that dish. To be clear, I do not consider what I ate fusion in any way. The French occupied Vietnam for a time and their cuisine has traces of techniques and flavors from France in it."

  • "They cater for the rich. There was a Lamborghini parked right outside. The vehicle owner would rev the car obnoxiously and have his car alarm as well. It definitely put a damper on our lunch. I wished that someone from the restaurant would have said something. Other than that, food was great as usual."

  • "The food at this French-Viatnamese restaurant is very tasty and the service is impeccable. This is a very classy restaurant and every visi to this one and the one in San Francisco has been second to none."

  • "We were fortunate enough to get a table upstairs on the balcony overlooking Rush Street on a perfect night in Chicago. The service was excellent, and the food was good, but not as special as I remember it being when they first opened. Overall it was a very nice experience but a little pricey for what was served."

  • "Most impressed by the spring rolls and the rice. The pork fried rice was amazing. Entrees were good, not great. Our waiter was terrific; a great help in navigating/comprehending the menu."

  • "Overall very good to excellent experience. Service was top notch. The restaurant was listed as French-Vietnamese but it was more on the Vietnamese side. There was a wide variety of choices on the menu and portions sizes were perfect. Appetizers were good for sharing at the table. Food taste of the entries was very good but not out of this world."

  • "We enjoyed our meal. The service was perfect. The water glasses were never empty. The waiter was brilliant. The food was exceptional. I will return to this restaurant when I'm back in Chicago. You can actually have a conversation. Everyone was incredibly friendly. Oh and the food. It was A++"

  • "Beautiful atmosphere. It's what makes me want to return more than the food. Disappointed we could not go upstairs due to party. We both thought trout was underwhelming. Wouldn't order again. Thought tofu veggie stir fry was good. Service was very good."

  • "Our dinner club went to Le Colonial for the first time this past weekend and loved it. The ambiance was perfect, the waitstaff was attentive and knowledgable and the food and drinks were amazing. We had nothing but great things to say about it. Thank you for the wonderful experience!"

  • "I have literally eaten at Le Colonial 2-3 nights in a row on some visits, so I am technically "a fan," as are most of my close friends. This time, I brought my beau and was so excited to share this little gem with him. A little disappointing. Don't get me wrong, the food was still delish... but the service lacked, well... service. In short: 5 min wait for menus, talked into a different appetizer which wasn't as flavorful as my original choice, very cool and they ran out of blankets for outdoor seating, 15 min wait for drinks, appetizers delivered on top of the entrees, no checking on us, flatware removed from our appetizer plates and plopped on the table so that we would reuse, etc."

  • "This is one of my favorite restaurants and I was ecstatic to have my in-laws try this place out...extremely happy that they had a gluten free menu for my mother in-law...but the food was fantastic for everyone. Every time I come I am happy that my favorite appetizer Chia Gio is still present and delicious - although I wish it was also served with a side of vermicelli noodles! But every dish on the menu is fantastic! Keep up the fabulous consistency!!"

  • "Food and service second to none. Decor is possibly the best we have ever seen anywhere. and we are not youngsters. The ox-tail soup is addictive and is a must try."

  • "Eaten here on many occasions and always impressed. However this visit was marred by our server who was abrupt and unfriendly. Rolling your eyes behind the customers back is very poor. The dinner was good but we felt rushed. My guests were quite disturbed by our servers attitude. It ruined the experience."

  • "Often when you return to a restaurant the second time it does not live up to expectations. Le Colonial does in every way."

  • "The food was wonderful and the atmosphere was warm and charming. The biggest disappointment was that at the beginning of the meal we asked the server if they had a certain dessert and he said, yes, they had plenty of it. When it came time to order dessert, we were told they had just run out, I had waited monthes for that dessert. But, that is to say how fabulous the tapioca is, highly recommended, but maybe you should have dessert first!"

  • "My husband and I had a wonderful lunch at Le Colonial. The appetizers were tasty but a tad over priced in our opinion. The pho and scallop salad were wonderful and memorable. Service was attentive and friendly."

  • "French Vietnamese! Do I need to say more? The food says it all. The dishes are full of Asian flavors but exquisitely presented. The Oxtail soup is a must have, but be careful you will want to share most of the dishes with the table! Love it here and will always return while in Chicago! Our waitress was the best!"

  • "This was our 3rd time dining at Le Colonial---with several years in between visits. It was the innovative food that kept us returning; however, this visit we found the food to be boring, not something to be associated with a top restaurant but rather quite pedestrian in both flavor and presentation. We will not be returning---too many other restaurants to try! (FYI: Very pricey wine list, for the actual offerings; including markup.)"

  • "The bar upstairs has a more laid back vibe than the restaurant downstairs, but both feature excellent service. Downstairs, be ready to sit in a near-communal setting at some tables, which is good/bad depending on your neighbors. Overall, the ambiance is no frills and suits the experience of the food. The food is delicious, and reasonably priced for a special occasion. Chances are if you can't find a table, you might try sitting at the bar upstairs -- the cocktails are adventurous and flavorful, and they'll serve you food up there, too. "

  • "We were seated at our table and then no one came for at least 10 minutes. We were with out of town friends so we did have plenty to talk about, but a drink would have been nice. Disappointed no one even said we will be with you. Finally caught the eye of who we though our server would be. She was really annoyed and said she would come when she could. We immediately felt like, oh no, that kind of evening. They were busy, but I think that is a good thing for a restaurant. We had not been there in over a year, but had always had good times before. The ceiling fans on the first floor seemed different, not the same paddle fans from the past, anyway, food was really great, service very average. "

  • "Le Colonial continues to be one of the most consistent and best of Chicago's restaurant options. The food is tremendous, the environment beautiful, and if you go, ask for Nick. An amazing waiter who makes your night all the better."
